Thank you for the release! I can confirm this works with dual booting and is super simple. Make a partition in steam deck recovery, then boot into Macrium, and drag and drop your partitions onto the drive.
If you have refind dual boot you need to remove ut before installing windows (you can activate it again later). Also make sure to remove the efi microsoft files from your hardrive(otherwise you will end up with 4 of them like me ) before you try to reinstall windows.
I've used windeck os for about 3 months and haven't had many issues. The only thing that bothers me is that games and windows recognise the joysticks as a mouse. But I use a program called handheld companion that emulates a xbox controller and even brings back the built in benchmarking tool.

This is amazing. I haven't tried it yet but I do wonder if any future Steam updates will mess anything with it, but I assume it will not because Steam is working independently like a regular app out of the OS?

Hello, thanks for this amazing project! I just have one question, I got my brand new Deck and an M2 2230 SSD, can I install the ISO directly onto this new SSD without that Macrium partitioning part? I'll still have the original eMMC saved in case.
Everything was normal up until the partition part, I deleted them and it didn't let me format a single one due to it not being/being NTFS. Now I'm gonna have to reinstall everything on SteamOS again. Great guide.
Why do you have to delete all of the partitions? I planned on cloning my 512G original drive to a 2TB drive and then make a 1TB partition for my Windeck install. Can I not install it on a partition if I have enough space?
This is something I'm trying to figure out as well. Macrium seems to only allow the cloning process on the whole drive. You can't single out the partition you make. Not sure how to get around this. Hope somebody knows.
I don't think there currently is a "good" way due to how SteamOS uses the entire SSD and how Windows likes to take over the boot process on updates. Normally you would install Linux after Windows because of the bootloader issue; but SteamOS doesn't install like other Linux distros, it formats the entire drive and gives you no options. This is mostly an issue with SteamOS that Valve may or may not eventually fix.

Is there some kind of newer graphics driver that i could try?
Dunno about device manager but the Task Manager thing is due to TM running as Admin and the steam drivers not working on apps running as Admin. I've heard it's possible to just run Steam as admin and it'll work again but YMMV.

Sounds like you haven't spent enough time in windows on the deck or just prefer Linux in general and that's fine. But Windows is objectively more compatible with everything in the gaming world. And I'll say it again, if you steal games its WAAAAAYYY easier on Windows.
@@serik21 I’ve used windows for 24 years of my 32 my guy lol. I don’t need to install an OS on my steam device that comes with all of the issue attached to Windows/M$ (baring experimentation, benchmarking, curiosity, etc.). I’ve used linux as a daily driver for the last four to include on my gaming desktop rig. Remove the needless tribalism from the discussion here. I’m curious to any valid reasons and so far you haven’t given any besides “it’s just better!”. I gave you multiplayer anti cheat. That was a fair concession. You can do what you want, it’s your device 🤪
Great instructions! Is it also possible to install it on an external ssd? I now have Windows 10 on my external running and would like to switch to win deck.
Wait, isn't there any way to install it on one specific partition made especially for windows ??
Unfortunately, it wipes the whole drive because it's restoring an image rather than installing windows.
WindeckOS Looks Great!!! Two questions; did you Remove your Steam OS against windeckOS on the internal SSD? And Works windeck OS like Steam? Is it possible to install Games on the Micro SD? My internal SSD is 128GB only and Windows on this ssd is Not perfect :/ and the Last questions? Is it possible to make a Dual Boot SSD with windeckOS? Thank you
I have a question and I don't wanna sound rude or everything. Do I need this? I have no problem turning my Steam Deck off for getting into boot mode for the SteamOS. I'm new to this and don't want to install everything I see
Hey, great video and everything but the OLED Steam Deck has no wifi drivers and Bluetooth so I guess for now I'm going back to SteamOS.
TH-cam really are some busters, aren't they?
I don't think you have to activate *any* type of Windows install, no matter the screen size. You'll get the watermark and will lose some basic features, but you don't *have* to do it, and it can even be downloaded from Microsoft directly.
Thanks for doing this, just installed it on my Steam Deck and it's running great!
Super happy to hear
HI can i restore windeck os partition via macrium recscue if i already have steamos and windows 10 as dual boot in my internal SSD? My idea is just want to change my current windows 10 to windeck os without wipe out my steam os.
Restore failed- Error 0.... What do I do??
That's where I'm at find a solution?
Will this image work on a non steam deck device? I feel like this could be pretty cool on an n100 minipc to use as a TV box.
so the reason you may have had your vifro removed is because the iso is modded? and you cant distribute modded ms ISO thats why there using playbooks for windows now for revi and atles OS. it cause of leagal stuff
wait is this supposed to be better than Windows as a whole performance wise?
does this work on Steamdeck OLED? and can you use Windows 10?
After off the big picture mode, the left trackpad scroll doesn't work. Is there any way to chage trackpad option in desktop mode?
Yes, same way you would do it in SteamOS. Go in steam settings and you should be able to edit the desktop config.
Do you really have to delete all?
Can't you start gparted > resize the main partition > create new NTFS partition with the new free space > install windeckOS there?
Just installed Windeck 1.1 and I thought it was supposed to have all the drivers installed? I just clicked on Device Manager and its missing loads
So my sd card was reading and I was even playing games windeck until today. Now its now even reading my sd card
I got this set up but can't get any external displays to work. Any help?
Blue screen id you try to install it with an Steam Deck OLED
I'm just gonna uninstall chrome... lol I use opera gx, or anything but chrome... just eat my system. and I don't miss it
I keep getting an error 2 after I hit finish in macrium. Is there something I need to do o the internal hard so it cam copy the partitions?
Does anyone know why I can't turn on my wifi? I installed this on the loki and everything else works.
Other than that, it's fantastic
Great work. Just curious will this work or support with other types of handheld like Ally,Aya,GPD. Thanks and keep it up.
Mirror the image on the sd card it takes 5 minutes, boot with power and + l, chose sd card
excelent video! but after a while, it shows the “actívate wondows” legend, what should i do?
Is it necessary to download apps like steam deck tools or handheld companion for the controllers to work properly or not?
I already have windows 11 installed on internal drive, if i decide to install this on internal drive again, will this erase all my existing games? TIA
This would be perfect if there was a registry key that changes the shell from explorer.exe to steam
Bro so I decided to go back to Linux. Thought I was missing out on Proton but I miss all the non-steam games and lack of fuss playing them.
Anyways, I didn't have a copy of windows on a SD card this time (which already felt like an achievement) so I've been trying to get WinDeckOS back without a windows PC at all. I've got all the way to the Macrium screen currently restoring the 3 partitions. Let you know if I make it!
I made it!
Can't click the links in the description..

Great tutorial, thank you.
I've managed to install it, but i'm having some problems. The touchpad stops working rather often, usually when i open something like task manager or device manager.
Downloaded MGS Revengeance from steam, and it's not launching. Installed Armored Core 6, it's stuttering a lot even on the absolute lowest settings, not remotely playable.
Is there some kind of newer graphics driver that i could try?
Dunno about device manager but the Task Manager thing is due to TM running as Admin and the steam drivers not working on apps running as Admin. I've heard it's possible to just run Steam as admin and it'll work again but YMMV.
@@TheFatDemon thank you
After installing, my sd crad cannot be read anymore. Any of u guys know how to fix it?
Can I just install windeck.img to an external drive and boot off it that way using rufus
Has anyone tried this on a regular desktop? This would make an amazing console killer OS
@lLargefriendly Lop dual boot video ???? were
nvm i just got m.2 external kit
No drivers for oled steam deck yet 😡
I just installed this on my steam deck... the system seems to working great, but I can't see to make my dock (ugreen) usb-c to hdmi work anymore, so I can use my steam deck on external displays...I should do something to fix that?
Nevermind, just needed to disconnect the powercable from the hub before connecting the hdmi (for some reason)
So I followed the video but can't find my sd card to format it so I can use it can any one please help me?
is a loud fan expected with windeck os because my fan just blasts at every given chance
so theoretically, I can install windows on Desktop with a screen recognized as 9 inches or below, and it should activate?
A video to dual booth this please? :)
Please make windows 10 version, as we cant play Fifa 23 on windows 11.
