@@DeckWizard i dont really know myself but i watched a lot of tutorial for Windows on Steam deck and most of them said that you dont need it on small devices like the Steam deck
Thank you for this simple walkthrough. I gave up trying to dual boot on my own. I just kept overwriting the bootloader nullifying any access to my other OS. This looks simple enough even I could do it. I'll give it a try in a few days if I have the time.
Same, been watching as many YT videos to make sure I'm up to date, this video coming out today made it even sweeter, so thanks for definitely changing my mind on dual booting my steam deck
One thing that make having a steam deck more enjoyable for me is having great channels like your to rely on for simply effective tutorials, thank you❤️
for anyone that’s having issues with windows booting to a black screen, turn off fast startup in the control panel! now my dual boot works perfectly on my oled
Awesome. I've been dual booting since your original video and didn't know there was a rEFInd GUI now. Every time there is a major SteamOS update I have to refer back to your "bring dual boot back to life video" to get it working again, it seems like one of these new steps might be helpful to me!
Hi there! Thank you for your support from my previous guides, I really appreciate it. The rEFInd GUI is fantastic and I recommend trying it out as opposed to my older Dual Boot guides, make sure to stay tuned to the channel for further support on Dual Booting the Steam Deck and other handhelds.
I had to play this at a slower speed because it goes by so fast and also had to watch some other videos and put this one and that one together but it helped, thanks!
Don’t know off the top of my head now.. but the only slight issue I’m having is when I’m selecting windows it goes to a black screen, so I have to turn the Steam Deck off and then on and it boots into windows ?
Thank you for making this! Just had a quick question. If/when valve includes an official dual boot and a future update, will this be easy to take off and use the official one? Would it just involve formatting and redownloading SteamOS?
This seems like a good tutorial but I need an idea here. Is there any way to make it so that windows is secondary but to always boot into steamos first? I honestly see no point to mess with dual booting if it invalidates the main part of the steam deck I enjoy, which is the ability to quickly press the power button and wake into steamos and play whatever game I left out on.
@@DeckWizard not really, but different question. im on a newer looking windows 11 installer and it tells me "There is an error selecting this partition for install. Please select a different partition or refresh selections." if i go to an older installer it gives me the same error in different wording. 8:43 is where my issue happened.
Is there any downsides to having dual boot on steam deck? I think I saw somewhere that it could impact the battery life? Let me know if I’m wrong! Appreciate your videos as always ❤
Hiya, no there isn't a downside like battery life, I've Dual Booted many Steam Decks many times over the past almost 3 years and everything is running great ❤️ Also thank you for your support and watching my videos 🥰
Grateful for channels like yours so thank you! A couple questions. When I shut down from the Windows side it opens directly back up into windows and not to the selection boot. Did I miss something or can you only reach the selection boot from shutting down from Steam? My second question is regarding steamdeck controller setup. Particularly for Apex. Do you have any videos or recommendations for setup? TIA!
Thank you for your kind words and support. Check the manual boot of SteamOS and run the Refind GUI again to fix Windows booting, also make sure you installed the dual boot fix. For the controller setup, I'll have a guide out ASAP I've just been super busy with games 🙈 but it is coming. If you want to look into Steam Deck Tools that is what we need for the controller, otherwise add the game or launcher to Steam and launch it through there. If you're playing Apex, download and launch from Steam and it should work.
Thanks for your positive feedback! Please make sure to read the notice in the description regarding the Windows installation if you're looking to do this yourself! Have a great day ♥️
Could this be done with an external SSD as well instead of the internal SSD inside the steam deck? So you could just plug in the external SSD to boot into the windows install when you want I hope that makes sense I really want to dual boot to use certain programs like photoshop and adobe illustrator on my deck but I don't have space and would rather not do it directly on my internal SSD.
Yes absolutely! We can select "Windows External SSD" in the Dual Boot GUI to achieve this and when connected to the Steam Deck the EFI file present from the Windows Installation can be accessed as we would expect ❤
Hey, sorry, I'm back again.😂 I was wondering if you know if there is a way to create a shared partition so that the storage is shared instead of split?
You can change the partition to BTRFS instead of NTFS but I wouldn't recommend it due to the way Linux and Windows handle their directories differently. If you try it, let me know how you get on.
@DeckWizard Thank you for the tutorial and the support. I'll try looking into it further, and if I hear from there that it's okay to do, then I might try it.
Seriously thinking about trying this on my oled. Really want to try lossless scaling. Have you tried emulating infamous with lossless scaling? If so how does it run?
Currently doing this now and so much easier to follow hopefully it goes smooth unlike last night when I installed windows and my steamOS got deleted😂 thank you bro!❤
Did you perform the Dual Boot fix as mentioned in the tutorial? To get back to SteamOS you need to access it manually which is timestamped and then perform the rEFInd GUI again
Amazing Video! I have a 512GB Oled. I was wondering how I can split a 1tb Micro SD between both OS’s. I just want to install Black ops 6 & Fortnite on Windows, and all my other games on Steam OS. Is it possible to share a MicroSD between both OS’s?
It is possible but not recommended for Micro SD due to the low read/write speeds, please stay tuned for future videos where I'll go more in depth on this
I got it to work, although it likes to boot into Windows by default for some reason. I did manually boot into SteamOS like you said and reconfigured rEFInd, but it's still not working quite right.
@ Yeah I did. Things just started working after I booted back into manual mode and did rEFInd for the 3rd time, not sure if that actually triggered it or not. But now the only problem I have is the audio still doesn't work on my OLED dispite having the 3 drivers installed.
Thank you for letting me know refind is now working. In regards to the audio drivers, have you definitely installed all 3 OLED specific ones correctly? Does anything happen if you install them again? 🤔
Steam Deck Tools, I have a tutorial coming for it soon. You might be able to get controls working by adding the epic games launcher and/or fortnite exe to Steam and launching from there so it attaches to Steam input.
I have SteamOS on my 1TB internal and Windows 11 on my 512GB MicroSD. Do I follow the steps to install rEFInd on SteamOS, set SteamOS as the primary and default and then select Windows (SD) to allow a dual boot?
Yes that's correct, if you apply Windows SD Card as your 2nd choice in the GUI then it will detect Windows on there and boot appropriately, let me know how you get on.
@@DeckWizard When I run the Konsole command from GitHub I get the following: error: no targets specified (use -h for help) Failed to enable unit: Unit file bootnext-refind.service does not exist. Installation 'completes' but I can't seem to install the GUI. -h does nothing. Going through the read me and I can't seem to find this error anywhere. Running SteamOS 3.6.19 Stable
That's amazing to hear, that's exactly what it's there for and as long as we understand this method it's smooth sailing for any type of SteamOS and Windows Update where we feel in control. Have a great day and thanks for choosing my guide ❤️
This guide was great and I have Windows 11 running now. One thing, every time I boot into Windows a Powershell window opens and says "operation completed successfully". Any idea what is causing that?
Does this method limit you to installing Windows 11 on the internal SSD, with the potential risk that offers, or can this method be made to work using an SD card as the windows drive/partition instead? Am reluctant to fiddle with SSD in deck and would prefer the SD card method, assuming you can get the dual boot menus working?
Hi there, thanks for your comment. Internal SSD is superior to Micro SD Card in many ways, our internal drive has far better read/write speeds than a Micro SD Card and performance in games is also better. Running an operating system, background processes and the expectation of running AAA games all from a Micro SD is not recommended and a lot of stress for the Card which will eventually break as a result. Our internal drive is built for these types of tasks and is a much more robust and reliable form of media. I hope that helps 😊
Hey man, great job on the video. I'm not sure whether the Stable 3.6 update messed it up as I did have windows and everything installed on on the beta 3.6 before the proper stable update released. The Method of sharing the NTFS card doesn't seem to be visible on SteamOS anymore, and I'm unable to mount and open the sd card, getting an error of "Bad fs, Bad superblock Etc". However the sd card does still work on my windows partition, and doesn't show any errors when scanning it. Is there a way to fix this without having to wipe the card? and has this happened to you? Thanks :)
I appreciate the video. Everything seems to work fine but I have one issue, when choosing windows to boot, the screen goes black and unresponsive. I have to hold the power button for 10 seconds or so, and when it restarts it goes right to windows, and it works fine. Andy idea what could be causing this? It's somewhat intermittent but happens most of the time (80%).
I’m having an issue where everything was working fine, however now windows keeps resetting display settings and doesn’t allow me to connect to WiFi even using ethernet does not work when using a dock.
One thing to tell people: the new Windows 11 24H2 update is corrupting the system files (whether dual-boot or sole Windows 11) this includes BSOD on the same partition SSD I had to reimage multiple times and just did a Windows 10 (up to date patches) instead and its stable without crashes
It’s not the installing part thats the issue; its once you install the Windows 11; after a while, you turn off and turn on the SD, the process hangs (meaning you can’t even move your mouse for a while until you get a “Critical Process Died” BSOD that loops). I know all the work arounds and even spoke with the Clover author. Setting the Memory RAM size in the BIOS from 1gb to 4gb might help but ultimately Windows 11 crashes nonetheless 1. Definitely not faulty SSD (currently on Wins 10 sole and turned on and shut off SD many times without ever “hanging” 2. Not a faulty SD OLED - tested with sole SteamOS running for many days - no error 3. Its better to partition the SSD into another drive of its own to put all the games and programs installed so that if the main “C:/ drive” with the sole Windows file is corrupted with BSOD, you can reformat that Partition only with the Windows while leaving the other partition uncorrupted; all you need to do is reattach the program installation path to that drive where your game is Not sure, if you are getting BSOD after couple reboots (or maybe its a select few??) but Windows 10 is the only stable for the SD right now; the problem is that the Wifi driver is still wonky and broken even on Windows 10/11 after reinstalling the official driver. from the Steam Resources page. Good tutorial video nonetheless but I just wanted to point this out to potential users who will encounter this problem (many in the r/WindowsOnDecK subreddit)
Is it possible to do this with a 64 gb steam deck? I have one with 2 sd cards a 512 and a 1tb one that i mainly want to use for the system please answer soon thank youu
The very top of this description and comments I have placed a warning ⚠️ We need to select "Previous setup" from the bottom left corner of the windows installer to be taken to the setup I am showing in the video. If you have the Grub issue then I have pinned a video for you to use in order to fix, which you need to follow exactly to fix.
rEFInd is a lot cleaner, easier to customize and we don't need to rely on themes to express ourselves. Parts of the Clover script originated from the rEFInd script which you're seeing here for full transparency and its great to see what options are available. I'll be covering Clover very soon with a full video so please stay tuned to the channel ❤
Did you make your Windows USB in Rufus, or did you use the Windows USB creator? My install screen looks different from yours, theres no option for "previous setup", just "Install" (and delete everything) and Repair this PC, which takes me to the Windows repair settings When I try to go through with the install, it refuses to let me pick the new partition but the error won't tell me why. The partition is 90gb and a Primary
Rufus as displayed in the guide, it's highly recommended to use that instead of the USB creator by downloading an ISO. Once done with Rufus, you should be seeing the Previous setup button in the bottom left of the window when you launch.
My new problem is when I try to shut down from windows 11, it doesn't turn off. I have to hold the power button. Another problem is when I turn it on, it automatically loads into windows 11 rather than the boot options steam OS + windows
@DeckWizard Are you talking about the Default boot option on reFind? If yes, they are both setup to SteamOS and yet boot into windows. Not sure which manual
Hi, just want to make sure, only windows os got installed right? The steam os stays as it’s currently is, or it also got wiped clean (like new install)
Yes that's correct, just make sure to choose "Previous setup" in the bottom left corner of the screen that appear for the Windows installer to get where I am in the video and make sure to read and understand the description beforehand. Microsoft made this tiny change shortly after I released this video.
One more question, can I update SteamOS and Windows? Moreover, everytime I select windows I have to shut it off and turn it back on for it to go into windows. Any idea?
Yes you can update both of then absolutely fine. If you find that you're Booting into Windows then follow the timestamps for Manual Booting SteamOS and run the Refind GUI again with create/install config. This will repair the dual boot and all will be as it was previously. I hope that helps!
Yo u say at the end of the video to check the description for guide on setting up the controls on windows but i see now video or guide. Seems like quite an important step no? Not quite sure why it was left out the video. Whats the point of a windows u cant do anything with? Please could u link the video ur talking about or guide or whatever snd also make it clear in the description.
Hiya, thanks for your comment, the guide is coming this week as I couldn't get to it last week due to the sheer amount of games releasing. Please stay tuned, I haven't forgotten ❤️
You're all good! It's listed in the description but also here is a direct link ❤️ Dual Boot Fix - www.mediafire.com/file/w7jswsuctvnnd7k/Dual+Boot+Fix.zip
Hello , is the fan speed increases abruptly while using windows in dual boot.? I tried installing windows on sd card and while playing games using windows on steam deck the fan speed is very much and getting heated very often. Please reply. Thanks for the video..
I haven't noticed this when Dual booting from the internal drive which is highly recommended. Micro DD is not recommended due to degraded performance and long term issues.
The procedure is different for the GO and uses different code than the Steam Deck. I'm aiming for the guide to drop soon so please stay tuned to the channel in the meantime.
Hi there, when you installed Windows did you make sure your installer was exactly like mine in the video? Specifically, when you install please make sure to click "Previous Setup" in the bottom left corner of the installer and do not select "Delete Everything".
@@DeckWizard reinstalled W11 using the “Previous Setup” and still getting the same message when trying to boot Steam OS “ BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anyuhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions. grub>”
Anyone know how to fix the “invalid loader file!” When trying to load into windows when in the os switcher? I can boot into it through the boot manager tho. I did the dual fix but nothing changes. I installed it on a sd card if that makes a difference. It is the top option in the boot manager as well. Please let me know if anyone knows a fix! Thanks
I'm having problems trying to partition my drive. I have a 1TB OLED and done all the previous steps right. when I want to partition 256gb and format to NTFS, it takes forever and the operation stays at 0%
I've had this issue before and it was due to my USB being old. Would you say this is a possible reason in your case? Also when you get to Windows, please make sure to select "Previous setup" from the bottom left corner, when you get there of course!
I started from the beginning, and it finally installed. I'm not sure if it was because the SSD was brand new and it had to be formatted first before reformatting to NTFS or what, but it worked. Does not make sense why it wasn't working but glad it's working now. Also, when partitioning to NTFS it also partitions a 4gb partition. I noticed on your video, yours didn't do that. It's annoying but working as of now :)
@@SSBryanXInfinity Wait I'm having the same problem with the error selecting partition. How exactly did you fix it and what do you mean by starting from the beginning? Did you delete the partition completely and redid it?
Yes we need to in order to partition the drive from the USB environment. We cannot partition the drive from desktop mode due to the drive being locked. It is unlocked when we do it from the USB.
Works for both Steam Deck OLED and LCD, highly recommend watching the guide before proceeding and take heed of the notice at the top of the description regarding the new Windows installer.
Did you manage to resolve? If this happens your USB is not suitable, it'd happened to me before and we can actually hold power to shut the Steam Deck down. We then have to use another USB instead for SteamOS Recovery where I would encourage to go out and buy a fresh new one.
I made sure to follow every step to the letter on my Steamdeck OLED, I get the dualboot screen and can load into Steam OS no problem. When I choose Windows though it just sits on a black screen? Been like it for almost 10 minutes now
Hi there, it sounds like refind hasn't installed correctly so there is nothing for the config to write to. Can you let me know what you've tried so far?
I can understand your frustration, although it must be made clear that the success rate for this method is very high. As for why refind may or may not be installing is unclear to me at present. Have you tried both sourceforge and pacman from the drop down list in the GUI followed by create config and install config? Also when you say "black screen" do you boot manually into SteamOS? Or does that just load as normal? Many thanks for your patience.
I'm having the issue where my windows can shut down and load into the Dual Boot screen, while if I were to go to SteamOS and shut down, it'll go straight to windows then run the powershell command. Is this an intended feature? I've followed every step clearly including manually loading into SteamOS.
I think you may have missed out the warning I placed at the top of the description and comments regarding choosing "previous setup" for the windows install. Please follow the guide pinned to fix, you got this 👊
If it got stuck you can safely hold the power button down for 10 seconds to turn off the deck. You will need to try a different USB unfortunately, I've had this happen to me many times and that was the reason for it happening.
I got through the Windows install step, and rebooted, and now it is stuck on the Steam logo, and I can't boot into any OS. I can't even get to the BIOS or Boot selection screen. I have tried rebooting a few times with both Vol + and Vol - and it just goes to the Steam logo, and sits there. Odd thing is the haptics from the touch pads are triggering. Any tips?
@@DeckWizard It is an original model. I just upgraded to a 2TB SSD, and got Steam OS on it and it was working fine. Then after partitioning and loading Windows, it is just sitting there on that screen. It sat there for 3+ hours until the battery died. Then I tried plugging it in and it did the same thing again. I have tried holding the power button several times
@@DeckWizard thank you very much. so to be clear, the windows installer (official from microsoft) is somehow not asking for any activation key nor anything to verify our installed windows on steam deck? so we can say its original then? at least until maybe someday the microsoft asks for the activation key?
That's correct, I've been using Windows 11 for 2 years across Steam Decks and for some reason never been asked for a key, not sure why but not complaining 😁
Which stage is this specifically? How old is your USB drive? Do you have another? If you are stuck with the NTFS Format in SteamOS Recovery hold the power button down as it has crashed and is not performing the format. It will be fine.
You can but I wouldn't recommend running Windows + Games from a Micro SD Card I'd consider investing in a bigger internal drive to replace your 64GB drive, it is honestly so worth it and your Steam Deck will be faster too.
I can't get past the beginning where I need to boot into SteamOS recovery mode from the USB stick. :( I see a black screen with a lot of text loading, and after a while, it just turns into a black screen with my cursor. Nothing else happens. :(
oh i finally got it!!! USB IS SLOW AS HELL, i waited like 30min to load steam recovery - I STRONGLY RECOMMEND USING A SD CARD!!! it worked after like 5min with SD card
What happens when the Steam Deck gets an update? I have windows and steam deck installed, it boots into windows when I start it, 'minus + power' and I can select steam os. But after a Steam Deck update, steam os disappears from the menu and I have to use 'plus + power' like in this video to access steam os, and fix it with this line: "sudo efibootmgr -c -L "SteamOS" -l "\EFI\steamos\steamcl.efi" -d /dev/nvme0n1p1 -b0003" I was thinking of clover or other options to avoid this necessary fix, is (this video) an option, or will I still have to do this fix?
I am stuck :( I can not get into the recovery desktop mode in the partition internal drive steps. After I select my external USB in the boot menu it goes straight to the duo boot screen. Then I select the steam icon and it boots the steam deck normally.
@@DeckWizard Im not quite sure how old they are. I tried several. I also tried micro sd cards. For some reason the 2 micro sd cards I have will not show up in the boot menu, The usbs will, but will not get me into recovery mode.
@DeckWizard Thanks for your video. It's very helpful, clear, and precise. Yeah, I see. I think your chosen method is best. I'll need to save some money for an SSD to increase the overall internal storage first.
@@DeckWizard when i go to install the gfx driver in the windows OS and restart during the installation it boots back into the windows lock screen but asks for a password change before I can proceed
So i ran into two problems on OLED. The drivers that needed installed via right click and install, that install button does not appear. also when trying to install the boot media fix the command window opens and denies it immediately. Not really sure what to do about either of these.
Are you making sure to select the correct files? Have you installed Windows from the official website? The boot fix should be used via run as admin. Let me know how you get on!
@DeckWizard for example, the wifi driver. I go to the qcwlan64 set up information file. However right clicking only allows me to open it as a text document, cut, copy, or delete it. Or I can open it in properties. No option to install The windows media installation came directly from windows as well.
The speakers wasn't working the only thing i did was update from beta to stable. That did not work so i left my steam deck on the side for 2 days. So i turned it on don't know what i did but the speakers work now. but now it boots up windows first and i have to manualy boot it for steam os
Manually Boot from SteamOS and run the refind gui again with create and install config. Also make sure you installed the Dual Boot fix on the Windows side very important.
Before doing how to Dual Boot Steam Deck - SteamOS & Wins 11 tutorial, do you need to be on latest BIOS on SteamOS Beta update 3.6.9 instead of Stable? In order to get Bluetooth to work properly & do this before installing Windows as mentioned on Steam Deck - Windows Resources site. what you think?
Hiya, it is recommended at the start of the guide to check for updates and ensure we're on the latest SteamOS 3.6 Version before proceeding. The latest update includes a firmware update for our Bluetooth driver in Windows which is required to complete the installation.
hey everyone, recently bought a steam deck and i decided to put windows 11 on a microsd card, I had already used the media creation tool to download windows on a microsd. I followed every step besides the partition step because I had already formatted my microsd card before hand. Main issue is that when in the dual boot screen and clicking on windows it says "invalid loader file! Error:not found while loading bootmgfw.efi hit and key to continue"
I would see this right after I spent 2 days and finally got it somewhat figured out with clover. I might just try to overwrite it and pray it works lol.
I think you would need to follow the uninstall steps for clover first before applying refind as they can conflict with each other through the EFI Boot table.

@spcrro really? How's that work? I've always needed it
@@DeckWizard i dont really know myself but i watched a lot of tutorial for Windows on Steam deck and most of them said that you dont need it on small devices like the Steam deck
Thank you for this simple walkthrough. I gave up trying to dual boot on my own. I just kept overwriting the bootloader nullifying any access to my other OS. This looks simple enough even I could do it. I'll give it a try in a few days if I have the time.
You're welcome! Sounds like a plan! Please let me know if you require any help and I'll be more than happy to help ❤
Same, been watching as many YT videos to make sure I'm up to date, this video coming out today made it even sweeter, so thanks for definitely changing my mind on dual booting my steam deck
Has it worked?
One thing that make having a steam deck more enjoyable for me is having great channels like your to rely on for simply effective tutorials, thank you❤️
That's very kind feedback, thank you!
for anyone that’s having issues with windows booting to a black screen, turn off fast startup in the control panel! now my dual boot works perfectly on my oled
Going to try this mine is stuck on black screen rebooting then fires into windows
Thank you so much. This was always so intimidating for me to even want to attempt to do in two years owning a Deck. Subbed.
Thank you for your support. Please take notice of and read the description before installing windows to be fully up to date on the process ❤️
easy and most beautiful dual boot setup I've ever seen...
Thank you for your positive feedback, have a wonderful day!
Got it working on my OLED. Thank you so much for this guide!
Glad you got it sorted! Enjoy and let me know if you need help in the future!
I had to play this at a slower speed because it goes by so fast and also had to watch some other videos and put this one and that one together but it helped, thanks!
I'm glad you got it sorted, stay tuned this week for the controller guide ❤️
Worked a treat mate! I didn’t need to bypass WiFi on windows set up either
Great news! Did you choose "previous setup" when installing windows?
Thank you for your positive feedback!
Yes thats correct, there are instructions on the Github page for uninstalling when required
Thank you for this, was just researching on how to dual boot my SD Oled. Will follow this guide :)
Make sure to take notice of the Windows disclaimer at the top of the description and other than that I hope you enjoy!
Hi there, yes so when we install the Dual Boot GUI we can choose to have SteamOS boot first instead of Windows after 5 seconds of inactivity
the way this came out the DAY i needed it to 😭. THANK YOU
I hope you enjoy once Dual Boot is all setup! Are there any games in particular you're looking to play on Windows? ❤
@@DeckWizard not really, but different question. im on a newer looking windows 11 installer and it tells me "There is an error selecting this partition for install. Please select a different partition or refresh selections." if i go to an older installer it gives me the same error in different wording. 8:43 is where my issue happened.
hey, you think you could try the game "Dark and Darker" in your next tests on the oled?
Stay tuned to the channel and I'll see if I can squeeze that game in some time ❤
@@DeckWizard awesome
Is there any downsides to having dual boot on steam deck? I think I saw somewhere that it could impact the battery life? Let me know if I’m wrong! Appreciate your videos as always ❤
Hiya, no there isn't a downside like battery life, I've Dual Booted many Steam Decks many times over the past almost 3 years and everything is running great ❤️
Also thank you for your support and watching my videos 🥰
Thank you so much!
This is so amazing! Great video! Thank you!!
Thanks for your positive feedback! Please make sure to read the notice in the description regarding the Windows installation if you're looking to do this yourself! Have a great day ♥️
Could this be done with an external SSD as well instead of the internal SSD inside the steam deck?
So you could just plug in the external SSD to boot into the windows install when you want
I hope that makes sense I really want to dual boot to use certain programs like photoshop and adobe illustrator on my deck but I don't have space and would rather not do it directly on my internal SSD.
Yes absolutely! We can select "Windows External SSD" in the Dual Boot GUI to achieve this and when connected to the Steam Deck the EFI file present from the Windows Installation can be accessed as we would expect ❤
@@DeckWizard you are the best thank you for such a fast reply i will give it a go!
I hope you have a wonderful day today!

You too, let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to help

Hey, sorry, I'm back again.😂 I was wondering if you know if there is a way to create a shared partition so that the storage is shared instead of split?
You can change the partition to BTRFS instead of NTFS but I wouldn't recommend it due to the way Linux and Windows handle their directories differently.
If you try it, let me know how you get on.
@DeckWizard Thank you for the tutorial and the support.
I'll try looking into it further, and if I hear from there that it's okay to do, then I might try it.
Amazing video, I really appreciate it 👍
Thank you, Make sure to select "Previous setup" when installing Windows.
Did you already follow it and forget to choose "Previous setup" for Windows per the warning notice?
@ I’m currently just using rufus to get the steam recovery image on so I can partition but I’ll remember that bit when I get to it mate cheers
@@DeckWizardjust noticed when I boot up now after being in windows it boots me into windows first instead of giving me a choice
Did you perform the Dual Boot fix as mentioned in the tutorial?
To get back to SteamOS you need to access it manually which is timestamped and then perform the rEFInd GUI again
@ yes mate that’s sorted it, quick question how do I get the old nov 2023 driver gpu for Fortnite to play better?
Hey, what kind of keyboard did you use for this setup? Did you connect the keyboard to the USB C hub?
Yes that's correct 😊
So what type of keyboard did you use?
Amazing Video! I have a 512GB Oled. I was wondering how I can split a 1tb Micro SD between both OS’s. I just want to install Black ops 6 & Fortnite on Windows, and all my other games on Steam OS. Is it possible to share a MicroSD between both OS’s?
It is possible but not recommended for Micro SD due to the low read/write speeds, please stay tuned for future videos where I'll go more in depth on this
@@DeckWizard Subbed. Thank you!
I got it to work, although it likes to boot into Windows by default for some reason. I did manually boot into SteamOS like you said and reconfigured rEFInd, but it's still not working quite right.
Did you apply the dual boot fix in Windows?
@ Yeah I did. Things just started working after I booted back into manual mode and did rEFInd for the 3rd time, not sure if that actually triggered it or not.
But now the only problem I have is the audio still doesn't work on my OLED dispite having the 3 drivers installed.
Thank you for letting me know refind is now working.
In regards to the audio drivers, have you definitely installed all 3 OLED specific ones correctly? Does anything happen if you install them again? 🤔
Do you have any tutorials on how to get rid of double inputs? Using steam games not non-steam
How did you get Fortnite to work, I can’t get it to recognize the correct controls or add it to steam
@@DeckWizard You're a legend, thanks mate
@@DeckWizard When I run the Konsole command from GitHub I get the following:
error: no targets specified (use -h for help)
Failed to enable unit: Unit file bootnext-refind.service does not exist.
Installation 'completes' but I can't seem to install the GUI. -h does nothing.
Going through the read me and I can't seem to find this error anywhere. Running SteamOS 3.6.19 Stable
That manual boot into steam then re configuring refind fixed my dual boot problems not going into refind after restart/shutdown. thanks
That's amazing to hear, that's exactly what it's there for and as long as we understand this method it's smooth sailing for any type of SteamOS and Windows Update where we feel in control.
Have a great day and thanks for choosing my guide ❤️
@ I’m still going to be using windows 10 till eod since windows 11 has now become a good/bad install lottery even with the 24h 11 update
I highly recommend the internal SSD for the best experience compared to Micro SD/External drive due to a degraded experience on the latter.
Why did you partition on internal ssd instead of doing windows on micro sd card?
Hi there, thanks for your comment. Internal SSD is superior to Micro SD Card in many ways, our internal drive has far better read/write speeds than a Micro SD Card and performance in games is also better.
Running an operating system, background processes and the expectation of running AAA games all from a Micro SD is not recommended and a lot of stress for the Card which will eventually break as a result.
Our internal drive is built for these types of tasks and is a much more robust and reliable form of media.
I hope that helps 😊
@DeckWizard absolutely will do thank you so much!!
Thanks :)
Hi there, if you're looking to share your Micro SD Card, I would recommend looking into BTRFS Sharing as opposed to NTFS
Hey I appreciate the tutorial. But will this install delete the game saves that are currently on my SSD?
Hiya thanks for your positive feedback! No your saves will be fine as they are kept on your SteamOS partition.
Thank you.
yes very easy process thnx .. and also need to how to uninstall dual boot with out loosing data ❤
Please check the Github. Uninstallation steps are documented there step by step ❤️
I appreciate the video. Everything seems to work fine but I have one issue, when choosing windows to boot, the screen goes black and unresponsive. I have to hold the power button for 10 seconds or so, and when it restarts it goes right to windows, and it works fine. Andy idea what could be causing this? It's somewhat intermittent but happens most of the time (80%).
i`m on the same problem... who do u fix it ?
I’m having an issue where everything was working fine, however now windows keeps resetting display settings and doesn’t allow me to connect to WiFi even using ethernet does not work when using a dock.
Lil update: Reinstalled windows, haven’t come across this issue again yet. Will update if it happens. To all that read this, have a lovely day. : )
One thing to tell people: the new Windows 11 24H2 update is corrupting the system files (whether dual-boot or sole Windows 11) this includes BSOD on the same partition SSD
I had to reimage multiple times and just did a Windows 10 (up to date patches) instead and its stable without crashes
The solution and workaround is pinned to the top of the comments and description, it's an annoying change from Microsoft.
Setting the Memory RAM size in the BIOS from 1gb to 4gb might help but ultimately Windows 11 crashes nonetheless
1. Definitely not faulty SSD (currently on Wins 10 sole and turned on and shut off SD many times without ever “hanging”
2. Not a faulty SD OLED - tested with sole SteamOS running for many days - no error
3. Its better to partition the SSD into another drive of its own to put all the games and programs installed so that if the main “C:/ drive” with the sole Windows file is corrupted with BSOD, you can reformat that Partition only with the Windows while leaving the other partition uncorrupted; all you need to do is reattach the program installation path to that drive where your game is
Not sure, if you are getting BSOD after couple reboots (or maybe its a select few??) but Windows 10 is the only stable for the SD right now; the problem is that the Wifi driver is still wonky and broken even on Windows 10/11 after reinstalling the official driver. from the Steam Resources page.
Good tutorial video nonetheless but I just wanted to point this out to potential users who will encounter this problem (many in the r/WindowsOnDecK subreddit)
So, the only things you actually download to the usb is the windows, steamos recovery and the steamdeck drivers?
That's right!
Ohh yeahh🎉🎉🎉
Can you use an sd card or usb to add more storage instead of modifying the internal drive for more storage?
Great Video!! I just hacve a problem when choosing the OS in the boot screen it always shows an Invalid loader file error screen.
Which OS specifically? Have you made sure to run the refind GUI again?
@@DeckWizard With Steam Os. I have run the GUI twice and get that error each time :(
Is it possible to do this with a 64 gb steam deck? I have one with 2 sd cards a 512 and a 1tb one that i mainly want to use for the system please answer soon thank youu
I enjoyed the tutorial so far, I am encountering a problem, where the Grub Gnu 2.06 UI is showing up, do you know any fix for this?
The very top of this description and comments I have placed a warning ⚠️
We need to select "Previous setup" from the bottom left corner of the windows installer to be taken to the setup I am showing in the video.
If you have the Grub issue then I have pinned a video for you to use in order to fix, which you need to follow exactly to fix.
How comes not clover?
rEFInd is a lot cleaner, easier to customize and we don't need to rely on themes to express ourselves.
Parts of the Clover script originated from the rEFInd script which you're seeing here for full transparency and its great to see what options are available.
I'll be covering Clover very soon with a full video so please stay tuned to the channel ❤
@@DeckWizardnice good to know good sir still trying to work out what loader to go with, how's this one handle updates ?
Did you make your Windows USB in Rufus, or did you use the Windows USB creator?
My install screen looks different from yours, theres no option for "previous setup", just "Install" (and delete everything) and Repair this PC, which takes me to the Windows repair settings
When I try to go through with the install, it refuses to let me pick the new partition but the error won't tell me why. The partition is 90gb and a Primary
Rufus as displayed in the guide, it's highly recommended to use that instead of the USB creator by downloading an ISO.
Once done with Rufus, you should be seeing the Previous setup button in the bottom left of the window when you launch.
@DeckWizard I figured it out, I was using RufusP.exe from the main site instead of the main Rufus
Can u do a video on this but windows on a SD card
Micro SD Card is not recommended but I can keep it in mind for the future 😊
Could you use 1 usb and 1 sd card of this?
Hi there! Yes this is absolutely fine, make sure to choose "Previous Setup" at the start of the Windows Installer so it looks just like mine.
My new problem is when I try to shut down from windows 11, it doesn't turn off. I have to hold the power button. Another problem is when I turn it on, it automatically loads into windows 11 rather than the boot options steam OS + windows
Please follow the manual steamos boot part and rerun the GUI with create and install config
@ great, thank you! Also while in windows os, do i have to use external kb+mouse? Or the trackpad can still function as mouse?
Do you have to format your steam deck ?
No, we can keep steamos as it is 🙂
One more question, can I update SteamOS and Windows? Moreover, everytime I select windows I have to shut it off and turn it back on for it to go into windows. Any idea?
Yes you can update both of then absolutely fine. If you find that you're Booting into Windows then follow the timestamps for Manual Booting SteamOS and run the Refind GUI again with create/install config.
This will repair the dual boot and all will be as it was previously.
I hope that helps!

@@DeckWizard no i think my USB drive is fine. it’s only several months old. i’m really unsure of what the problem is.
Don’t format it at the same time, it glitches out when you do that, leave it unallocated then after the resize is done format the unallocated space
@ i tried that and it still doesn’t work. i just might give up lol
You just have to let it sit, it took an hour for me and it was finally done
Is there a particular reason people choose 11 pro or is it preference?
We get access to a load of admin stuff as opposed to home which lacks it, most won't need it but it gives us more control.
After making a partition in my 2tb internal storage and try to install windows, i get There is an error selecting this partition for install.

@isaiahortega2244 the drive that I was trying to partition. Why do you already have stuff there?
im confused about the steam os recovery card, do we have too put steam os onto a usb stick?
Yes we need to in order to partition the drive from the USB environment.
We cannot partition the drive from desktop mode due to the drive being locked.
It is unlocked when we do it from the USB.
Can this be for steam deck oled as well ??
Works for both Steam Deck OLED and LCD, highly recommend watching the guide before proceeding and take heed of the notice at the top of the description regarding the new Windows installer.
@ ok thanks for the heads up
4:48 I get stuck here with "Downloading refind zip file" and it never progress further.
Is your WiFi OK? Have you restarted your Deck?
@DeckWizard It worked after switching to pacman from source forge as the source of the instalation. I'll follow the rest tomorrow.
getting stuck at the partition part. I have my usb hub with my usb drive - but i only have 3 options to choose from
Did you manage to get past it? You should just select your USB and proceed from there.
Is using a keyboard necessary or can i just use the built in keypad on the steamdeck
You might be able to get away with just touch screen. Make sure to read my warning in the description for the Windows Installer start.
@DeckWizard about 24H2? I'll pay attention to that. Waiting for a USB to arrive in mail
When I go to partition, it gets stuck at 11%. How long did it take you all for this part?
Did you manage to resolve? If this happens your USB is not suitable, it'd happened to me before and we can actually hold power to shut the Steam Deck down.
We then have to use another USB instead for SteamOS Recovery where I would encourage to go out and buy a fresh new one.
Looks like a decent tutorial, very informative and easy to understand. I, however, will not be attempting this. Windows sucks!
I made sure to follow every step to the letter on my Steamdeck OLED, I get the dualboot screen and can load into Steam OS no problem. When I choose Windows though it just sits on a black screen? Been like it for almost 10 minutes now

When I followed the steps, once I had installed windows, I couldn’t then boot into Linux, it said I was locked out of the root key?
Did you make sure to install Windows correctly per the notice at the top of the description?
Help! My steamdeck os just load gnu grub and i tried the fix but everytime i tried it, it just hangs with blackscreen and mouse pointer. Please help!
Have you made sure to follow the steps correctly from the fix provided?
Where does it hang with a black screen?
is there a video about rufus? how to burn images to cards?
There's likely lots available although it is very simple according to the segment I've provided with screenshots. You got this!
I'm not getting the dual boot screen. It just shows a black screen. I've redone the refind step multiple times. This is before installing the windows.
Hi there, it sounds like refind hasn't installed correctly so there is nothing for the config to write to.
Can you let me know what you've tried so far?
@DeckWizard I've reinstalled it multiple times. This is more hassle than it's worth.
Have you performed the Refind GUI steps for create/install config again?
Yes actually, manually load in to SteamOS, execute refind, create and load config all that jazz.
Hey for some reason i cant enter into steamOS manually. I just opens a command line and i have to reboot
I think you may have missed out the warning I placed at the top of the description and comments regarding choosing "previous setup" for the windows install.
Please follow the guide pinned to fix, you got this 👊
How long does shrinking and partitioning take? Mines seems to get to 11% and doesn’t do anything else?
If it got stuck you can safely hold the power button down for 10 seconds to turn off the deck.
You will need to try a different USB unfortunately, I've had this happen to me many times and that was the reason for it happening.
@ I see I have errors on mounting the partition manager when it loading up the steam recovery. Saying unable to mount
I’ve tried 7 different USB’s. 3 of them are brand new
I got through the Windows install step, and rebooted, and now it is stuck on the Steam logo, and I can't boot into any OS. I can't even get to the BIOS or Boot selection screen. I have tried rebooting a few times with both Vol + and Vol - and it just goes to the Steam logo, and sits there. Odd thing is the haptics from the touch pads are triggering. Any tips?
How old is your Steam deck?
Did you try holding the power off button for 10 seconds?
@@DeckWizard It is an original model. I just upgraded to a 2TB SSD, and got Steam OS on it and it was working fine. Then after partitioning and loading Windows, it is just sitting there on that screen. It sat there for 3+ hours until the battery died. Then I tried plugging it in and it did the same thing again. I have tried holding the power button several times
just want to make sure, is the windows cracked? or original version (or needs original key)? thank you
The windows is officially from Microsoft's website, if you wish to activate it is up to you although its never asked me to activate before.
@@DeckWizard Thank you very much for clearing things up. Now I'm more confident to try to dual boot my steam deck.
@@DeckWizard 1:00 can i do this process using mac? can i use for example balena etcher to write the windows and steam os?
Hi can you please do an updated video on this thanks
The video is a few weeks old
you say wait about a minute for open boot pendrive i am waiting like 10 minute but it still stuck found ntfs target partition
Which stage is this specifically? How old is your USB drive? Do you have another?
If you are stuck with the NTFS Format in SteamOS Recovery hold the power button down as it has crashed and is not performing the format. It will be fine.
I have a 64 gb steam deck can I stil dual boot with it i have a 1tb sd card 🤔
You can but I wouldn't recommend running Windows + Games from a Micro SD Card
I'd consider investing in a bigger internal drive to replace your 64GB drive, it is honestly so worth it and your Steam Deck will be faster too.
@@DeckWizard alright mate cheers
I can't get past the beginning where I need to boot into SteamOS recovery mode from the USB stick. :( I see a black screen with a lot of text loading, and after a while, it just turns into a black screen with my cursor. Nothing else happens. :(
Your USB is either old or not friendly with the image. Do you have another USB to try?
oh i finally got it!!! USB IS SLOW AS HELL, i waited like 30min to load steam recovery - I STRONGLY RECOMMEND USING A SD CARD!!! it worked after like 5min with SD card
anyone else having an issue on steam os image site , when i click download it goes to a "this page is not working at the moment" site
Try a different browser, it's working fine for me on Brave
What happens when the Steam Deck gets an update?
I have windows and steam deck installed, it boots into windows when I start it, 'minus + power' and I can select steam os.
But after a Steam Deck update, steam os disappears from the menu and I have to use 'plus + power' like in this video to access steam os,
and fix it with this line: "sudo efibootmgr -c -L "SteamOS" -l "\EFI\steamos\steamcl.efi" -d /dev/nvme0n1p1 -b0003"
I was thinking of clover or other options to avoid this necessary fix, is (this video) an option, or will I still have to do this fix?
If SteamOS gets a major update, simply follow the 13:20 Manual SteamOS Boot and run the GUI again, everything will be fixed.
I am stuck :( I can not get into the recovery desktop mode in the partition internal drive steps. After I select my external USB in the boot menu it goes straight to the duo boot screen. Then I select the steam icon and it boots the steam deck normally.
How old is your USB? Do you have another you can try?
@@DeckWizard Im not quite sure how old they are. I tried several. I also tried micro sd cards. For some reason the 2 micro sd cards I have will not show up in the boot menu, The usbs will, but will not get me into recovery mode.
I purchased 2 new USBs to test out and they will not show up in the boot menu either :(
Will running it on windows make dragon ball sparking zero get more ranked online matches ?
I think it might actually, I need to test this myself soon when games calm down a bit
Is it okay to set windows up through a micro sd card instead? I saw a video on how to do it.
You will get diminished performance and compromise the health of the Micro sd long term, it is up to you if you want to do it though
@DeckWizard Thanks for your video. It's very helpful, clear, and precise. Yeah, I see. I think your chosen method is best.
I'll need to save some money for an SSD to increase the overall internal storage first.
When mine restarts after during the graphics driver installation, it asks for a password change even though I never made a password
Which OS is asking for the password change? Can you detail your experience?
No option to install
The windows media installation came directly from windows as well.
@DeckWizard I'm genuinely mental. I didn't extract the files. Thus why I couldn't access the install button. Apologies for the confusion
I’ve been following this guide and when I get to the windows 11 setup it says to install driver to show hardware… what do I do
Hi there, did you manage to resolve this? Have you tried a different USB?
@@DeckWizard I’ll give it a go… I tried flashing another version of windows but no success there
The speakers wasn't working the only thing i did was update from beta to stable.
@@DeckWizardok thanks, guess I'll stick to stable
SteamOS 3.6.20 is the latest stable now, we don't need to be on Beta anymore
Dual booting hasn't been hard for me to do. The problem is keeping a dual boot after a windows update. I've given up.
I wonder how good this would work with winbtrfs, so that windows can access the games installed on linux.
hey everyone, recently bought a steam deck and i decided to put windows 11 on a microsd card, I had already used the media creation tool to download windows on a microsd. I followed every step besides the partition step because I had already formatted my microsd card before hand. Main issue is that when in the dual boot screen and clicking on windows it says
"invalid loader file!
Error:not found while loading bootmgfw.efi
hit and key to continue"
Windows isnt built for micro sd cards..
Should i uninstall my games before doing this?
Also what's the best way to get windows on the USB?
No you don't need to uninstall your games beforehand, just make sure to read and understand the notice in the description
Download rufus and follow the screenshot as specified in the guide ❤️ you got this!
@DeckWizard is a keyboard necessary or can I just use steamdeck keyboard for the commands?
I would see this right after I spent 2 days and finally got it somewhat figured out with clover. I might just try to overwrite it and pray it works lol.
I think you would need to follow the uninstall steps for clover first before applying refind as they can conflict with each other through the EFI Boot table.
thank you!
