Today, I decided to give this a try, and everything was going smoothly - until I accidentally deleted the SteamOS boot while installing Windows 24H2. For a moment, I thought I had completely ruined everything. Fortunately, a video guide from the pinned comment saved the day, and I was able to restore it all. Now, everything runs perfectly - better than ever on my OLED Deck. Truly grateful for the help!
Thank you for this simple walkthrough. I gave up trying to dual boot on my own. I just kept overwriting the bootloader nullifying any access to my other OS. This looks simple enough even I could do it. I'll give it a try in a few days if I have the time.
Same, been watching as many YT videos to make sure I'm up to date, this video coming out today made it even sweeter, so thanks for definitely changing my mind on dual booting my steam deck

EVERYONE!!!!! I'm going through the process of installing Windows and when I came across the Wi-Fi section, it allowed me to select the folder with the Wi-Fi driver and got installed. It connected to my Wi-Fi and I'm continuing with the process!!
I have watched over 10 videos on dual booting the steam deck, and this by far the best video out there, and the one i have followed with excellent results. Keep up the good work.
I had to play this at a slower speed because it goes by so fast and also had to watch some other videos and put this one and that one together but it helped, thanks!
Awesome. I've been dual booting since your original video and didn't know there was a rEFInd GUI now. Every time there is a major SteamOS update I have to refer back to your "bring dual boot back to life video" to get it working again, it seems like one of these new steps might be helpful to me!
Hi there! Thank you for your support from my previous guides, I really appreciate it. The rEFInd GUI is fantastic and I recommend trying it out as opposed to my older Dual Boot guides, make sure to stay tuned to the channel for further support on Dual Booting the Steam Deck and other handhelds.
Don’t know off the top of my head now.. but the only slight issue I’m having is when I’m selecting windows it goes to a black screen, so I have to turn the Steam Deck off and then on and it boots into windows ?
Could this be done with an external SSD as well instead of the internal SSD inside the steam deck? So you could just plug in the external SSD to boot into the windows install when you want I hope that makes sense I really want to dual boot to use certain programs like photoshop and adobe illustrator on my deck but I don't have space and would rather not do it directly on my internal SSD.
Yes absolutely! We can select "Windows External SSD" in the Dual Boot GUI to achieve this and when connected to the Steam Deck the EFI file present from the Windows Installation can be accessed as we would expect ❤
Thanks for your positive feedback! Please make sure to read the notice in the description regarding the Windows installation if you're looking to do this yourself! Have a great day ♥️
This seems like a good tutorial but I need an idea here. Is there any way to make it so that windows is secondary but to always boot into steamos first? I honestly see no point to mess with dual booting if it invalidates the main part of the steam deck I enjoy, which is the ability to quickly press the power button and wake into steamos and play whatever game I left out on.
Jesus what a nightmare so I have done everything perfectly. down to the tee yet when I partition the drive in the correct format and then reboot the steam deck into the boot menu and follow the install guide it wont allow me to download the windows operating system into the partition i just made. what on gods green earth am i doing wrong|?? i formatted the drive correctly with enough space and I AM sure its setup in NTSF. why cant i download jack shyt into the partition i just made i have reset my device twice with no luck. I have formatted the new drive as well but that wasn't the correct answer. what do i need to do so both windows and steam can co-exist?
I have tried everything could think of either windows 10 does not see the partition I made or windows 11 fails at 54%, I tried formatting in windows, ubuntu, steam os nothing seems to work
I’m having an issue where everything was working fine, however now windows keeps resetting display settings and doesn’t allow me to connect to WiFi even using ethernet does not work when using a dock.
@@DeckWizard not really, but different question. im on a newer looking windows 11 installer and it tells me "There is an error selecting this partition for install. Please select a different partition or refresh selections." if i go to an older installer it gives me the same error in different wording. 8:43 is where my issue happened.
Currently doing this now and so much easier to follow hopefully it goes smooth unlike last night when I installed windows and my steamOS got deleted😂 thank you bro!❤
Did you perform the Dual Boot fix as mentioned in the tutorial? To get back to SteamOS you need to access it manually which is timestamped and then perform the rEFInd GUI again
Wallhaven.cc is a good site. I recommend resizing then to 1280x800 in photoshop and saving them as PNG exclusively as no other format will work. Let us know how you get on and stay tuned to the channel for more videos!
I started from the beginning, and it finally installed. I'm not sure if it was because the SSD was brand new and it had to be formatted first before reformatting to NTFS or what, but it worked. Does not make sense why it wasn't working but glad it's working now. Also, when partitioning to NTFS it also partitions a 4gb partition. I noticed on your video, yours didn't do that. It's annoying but working as of now :)
@@SSBryanXInfinity Wait I'm having the same problem with the error selecting partition. How exactly did you fix it and what do you mean by starting from the beginning? Did you delete the partition completely and redid it?
Steam Deck Tools, I have a tutorial coming for it soon. You might be able to get controls working by adding the epic games launcher and/or fortnite exe to Steam and launching from there so it attaches to Steam input.
Thank you for making this! Just had a quick question. If/when valve includes an official dual boot and a future update, will this be easy to take off and use the official one? Would it just involve formatting and redownloading SteamOS?
Yes although we want to select Micro SD for the 2nd choice in the GUI, are you looking to try and test this soon? We recently pushed an update for the GUI that makes the Micro SD part better so definitely interested in your experience.
Hi there, thanks for your comment. Internal SSD is superior to Micro SD Card in many ways, our internal drive has far better read/write speeds than a Micro SD Card and performance in games is also better. Running an operating system, background processes and the expectation of running AAA games all from a Micro SD is not recommended and a lot of stress for the Card which will eventually break as a result. Our internal drive is built for these types of tasks and is a much more robust and reliable form of media. I hope that helps 😊
Grateful for channels like yours so thank you! A couple questions. When I shut down from the Windows side it opens directly back up into windows and not to the selection boot. Did I miss something or can you only reach the selection boot from shutting down from Steam? My second question is regarding steamdeck controller setup. Particularly for Apex. Do you have any videos or recommendations for setup? TIA!
Thank you for your kind words and support. Check the manual boot of SteamOS and run the Refind GUI again to fix Windows booting, also make sure you installed the dual boot fix. For the controller setup, I'll have a guide out ASAP I've just been super busy with games 🙈 but it is coming. If you want to look into Steam Deck Tools that is what we need for the controller, otherwise add the game or launcher to Steam and launch it through there. If you're playing Apex, download and launch from Steam and it should work.
You must have skipped updating SteamOS at the beginning of the guide. It installs the latest firmware which enables BT on Windows. After updating you will need to manually Boot into SteamOS and run the GUI create/install config again.
it doesn't work with win11 24h2 with older versions I think without problems. I tried several times with win11 24h2 and it deleted the entire boot partition of steamos so it couldn't be started to continue the process, I found another video on how to restore the deleted partition for steamos. and it's been working for 2 days now I didn't know it was about windows
Hiya! Did you read the top of the description regarding 24H2? I'm glad you managed to fix the issue, hopefully your experience has been positive afterwards.
Is there a way to add more space using the partition tool after doing all the steps or do I have to do everything all over again? Im trying to have fortnite and COD but I keep running out of storage via updates in the internal SSD D:
I was stuck in the Gnu Grub menu after attempting to boot up SteamOS after installing windows. Currently attempting to resolve it by going back into the SteamOS recovery image and make some changes in the konsole, but my USB is so slow, it's a real pain in the ass just to get in there.
You can but I wouldn't recommend running Windows + Games from a Micro SD Card I'd consider investing in a bigger internal drive to replace your 64GB drive, it is honestly so worth it and your Steam Deck will be faster too.
It seems like the dual booth fix only works whenever it wants too! Followed everything run it as administrator etc. And the script won't trigger consistently
@DeckWizard thank you for the reply wizard king! After choosing previous setup everything went smoothly, I ended up installing the latest windows 11 pro version 24H2. I manually went back to steamos desktop mode, did the refind config and safe.
how to install windows on the sd card instead? i want my internal memory to be steam os and my sd card to be windows instead of partitioning the internal memory
You need to use rufus to write Windows 2 GO on your micro sd card. Lots of guides on Google to do this. Once done, you need to select Micro SD in the GUI for your second choice.
@@DeckWizard This happens to me too. The first time that I try to boot Windows always results in a black screen. If I hold the power button and then try again the second time always boots successfully. Have you heard of this elsewhere?
My new problem is when I try to shut down from windows 11, it doesn't turn off. I have to hold the power button. Another problem is when I turn it on, it automatically loads into windows 11 rather than the boot options steam OS + windows
@DeckWizard Are you talking about the Default boot option on reFind? If yes, they are both setup to SteamOS and yet boot into windows. Not sure which manual
Hi, my Deck won't allow me to shrink it from the KDE Partition Manager while on the Image Recovery launched from the USB. It says "Error: Shrink partition "/dev/nvme0n1p8" from 466.31 GB to 273 GB"
@@DeckWizard I did used another USB and it worked, but now when installing Windows 11 it tells me there's an error selecting that partition (it has 180gb). I'm just going to delete and make the partition again, I guess.
@ Hey dude, thanks for the help. Right now I’m trying to install Windows but when I select the partition it tells me “Error at selecting this partition to install, select other partition or update the selections”. Seriously thinking about trying this on my oled. Really want to try lossless scaling. Have you tried emulating infamous with lossless scaling? If so how does it run?
To follow up with my previous comment, when i go to install the gfx driver in the windows OS and restart during the installation it boots back into the windows lock screen but asks for a password change before I can proceed
Quick question. Should I download the Disk image ISO for windows, or use the Installation media for it? (When clicking windows website it shows 3 different versions)
@DeckWizard so, just to make sure, and thank you for the response, but: Should i choose the windows 11 multi edition iso for x64 devices? (Third option from top down in website)
Hello, I have a problem when installing certain drivers (Bluetooth, audio 2 and 3) when I want to install I do not have the successful installation window displayed and indeed I have no Bluetooth activated on the steamdeck, how to fix the problem?
I have SteamOS on my 1TB internal and Windows 11 on my 512GB MicroSD. Do I follow the steps to install rEFInd on SteamOS, set SteamOS as the primary and default and then select Windows (SD) to allow a dual boot?
Yes that's correct, if you apply Windows SD Card as your 2nd choice in the GUI then it will detect Windows on there and boot appropriately, let me know how you get on.

Thanks for the walkthrough! I've followed the video but I'm finding I have to restart my steam deck after selecting the Windows partition before seeing anything. Any suggestions?
Which stage is this specifically? How old is your USB drive? Do you have another? If you are stuck with the NTFS Format in SteamOS Recovery hold the power button down as it has crashed and is not performing the format. It will be fine.
Hey, I'm having problems resizing my partition. It aborts the process due to an error, but it doesn't specify what the cause is. Not sure what I can do to let it go through
rEFInd is a lot cleaner, easier to customize and we don't need to rely on themes to express ourselves. Parts of the Clover script originated from the rEFInd script which you're seeing here for full transparency and its great to see what options are available. I'll be covering Clover very soon with a full video so please stay tuned to the channel ❤

I think you may have missed out the warning I placed at the top of the description and comments regarding choosing "previous setup" for the windows install. Please follow the guide pinned to fix, you got this 👊
I am stuck :( I can not get into the recovery desktop mode in the partition internal drive steps. After I select my external USB in the boot menu it goes straight to the duo boot screen. Then I select the steam icon and it boots the steam deck normally.
@@DeckWizard Im not quite sure how old they are. I tried several. I also tried micro sd cards. For some reason the 2 micro sd cards I have will not show up in the boot menu, The usbs will, but will not get me into recovery mode.
first off thank you for this. i managed to get thru the whole setup. My only issue is when booting windows it goes to a black screen. any fix for this?
Thank you for your support. Black screen? I haven't encountered this issue before 🤔 You installed the Windows 11 from the MS website I linked? Can you access SteamOS? Have you performed the manual SteamOS boot and rerun the config? Can you Boot into W11 manually via ESP/EFI/MICROSOFT/BOOT/bootmgfw.efi?
@DeckWizard yes to everything. When I first initially started the SD up and picked windows it stayed on a black screen. I had to hard reset and it came right up.
@@djizzal20 I just finished dual booting my steam deck and had the same problem as you. I possibly found a fix on reddit. on windows go to control panel > hardware and sound > power options > choose what the power button does > uncheck the 'turn on fast startup Hope that helps
I'm having problems trying to partition my drive. I have a 1TB OLED and done all the previous steps right. when I want to partition 256gb and format to NTFS, it takes forever and the operation stays at 0%
I've had this issue before and it was due to my USB being old. Would you say this is a possible reason in your case? Also when you get to Windows, please make sure to select "Previous setup" from the bottom left corner, when you get there of course!
Hi there, when you installed Windows did you make sure your installer was exactly like mine in the video? Specifically, when you install please make sure to click "Previous Setup" in the bottom left corner of the installer and do not select "Delete Everything".
@@DeckWizard reinstalled W11 using the “Previous Setup” and still getting the same message when trying to boot Steam OS “ BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anyuhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions. grub>”
Works for both Steam Deck OLED and LCD, highly recommend watching the guide before proceeding and take heed of the notice at the top of the description regarding the new Windows installer.
One more question, can I update SteamOS and Windows? Moreover, everytime I select windows I have to shut it off and turn it back on for it to go into windows. Any idea?
Yes you can update both of then absolutely fine. If you find that you're Booting into Windows then follow the timestamps for Manual Booting SteamOS and run the Refind GUI again with create/install config. This will repair the dual boot and all will be as it was previously. I hope that helps!
So i ran into two problems on OLED. The drivers that needed installed via right click and install, that install button does not appear. also when trying to install the boot media fix the command window opens and denies it immediately. Not really sure what to do about either of these.
Are you making sure to select the correct files? Have you installed Windows from the official website? The boot fix should be used via run as admin. Let me know how you get on!
@DeckWizard for example, the wifi driver. I go to the qcwlan64 set up information file. However right clicking only allows me to open it as a text document, cut, copy, or delete it. Or I can open it in properties. No option to install The windows media installation came directly from windows as well.
So what exactly do we need? I see you have a USB flash drive and another small flash drive but is that something special or just another normal flash drive?
I got to the windows install part but keep getting error message 'There is an error selecting this partition for install. Please select a different partition or refresh selections' ...
“I’m having a problem installing Windows, and I’m completely stuck. I’ve done everything correctly, but the installation path won’t show my 512GB NVMe drive. Here’s what I’ve tried: • I attempted dual-booting with SteamOS. I resized the drive using the SteamOS recovery image and then used rEFInd to create a dual-boot menu. However, when I tried to install Windows, the disk wouldn’t show up. • I resized 250GB of the drive and formatted it to NTFS, but the issue persisted. • I even deleted SteamOS completely and tried installing only Windows, but the disk still didn’t appear. • I’ve converted the disk from MBR to GPT, but nothing seems to work. At this point, I’m out of ideas. Does anyone know what could be causing this or how to fix it?”
Amazing Video! I have a 512GB Oled. I was wondering how I can split a 1tb Micro SD between both OS’s. I just want to install Black ops 6 & Fortnite on Windows, and all my other games on Steam OS. Is it possible to share a MicroSD between both OS’s?
It is possible but not recommended for Micro SD due to the low read/write speeds, please stay tuned for future videos where I'll go more in depth on this
Thank you for the tutorial, very clear. I use my Deck mostly plugged, do you know if when running Windows, the Steam Deck is using the power pass-trough when charged at 100% and plugged, ? To save battery capacity (like it does when running SteamOS).
In regards to the initial part of the video. If I have already setup my own steamos but now decided to attempt to add a dual boot, will I be required to format the current drive or can I partition the drive as is? Or at this point would it be better to just use an external ssd drive to be able to dual boot instead and avoid formatting?
@@DeckWizardthis worked! The only problem I’m having on the LCD is that I have to restart the deck 3 times for me to be able to access windows. Boot I no up SteamOS loads after watching the fix video you shared. Towards the end of your video I did follow the steps using the gui app on desktop mode and that’s what made my system freak out
Did you manage to resolve? If this happens your USB is not suitable, it'd happened to me before and we can actually hold power to shut the Steam Deck down. We then have to use another USB instead for SteamOS Recovery where I would encourage to go out and buy a fresh new one.
I can't get past the beginning where I need to boot into SteamOS recovery mode from the USB stick. :( I see a black screen with a lot of text loading, and after a while, it just turns into a black screen with my cursor. Nothing else happens. :(
oh i finally got it!!! USB IS SLOW AS HELL, i waited like 30min to load steam recovery - I STRONGLY RECOMMEND USING A SD CARD!!! it worked after like 5min with SD card
Have you tried carefully reviewing the steps I provide again? If we select our logo and background exactly as I specify it will work. The guide has a very high success rate currently and I test the GUI on a regular basis, hopefully you can get it to work, you got this!
@@DeckWizard if I leave it on stable will I have to do that every time I have a steam os update? I did my first LCD deck with your very first dual boot video. (That was great by the way 👍🏾) and every time I had a steam OS update I had to go back and fix it. If I leave my OLED on the stable channel will steam OS or windows updates break my dual boot like the first method you taught?

Thank you for this, was just researching on how to dual boot my SD Oled. Will follow this guide :)
Make sure to take notice of the Windows disclaimer at the top of the description and other than that I hope you enjoy!
Could this be done with an external SSD as well instead of the internal SSD inside the steam deck?
So you could just plug in the external SSD to boot into the windows install when you want
I hope that makes sense I really want to dual boot to use certain programs like photoshop and adobe illustrator on my deck but I don't have space and would rather not do it directly on my internal SSD.
Yes absolutely! We can select "Windows External SSD" in the Dual Boot GUI to achieve this and when connected to the Steam Deck the EFI file present from the Windows Installation can be accessed as we would expect ❤

Hi there, yes so when we install the Dual Boot GUI we can choose to have SteamOS boot first instead of Windows after 5 seconds of inactivity

Thank u so much , my w10 working properly
I have tried everything could think of either windows 10 does not see the partition I made or windows 11 fails at 54%, I tried formatting in windows, ubuntu, steam os nothing seems to work
I’m having an issue where everything was working fine, however now windows keeps resetting display settings and doesn’t allow me to connect to WiFi even using ethernet does not work when using a dock.

After making a partition in my 2tb internal storage and try to install windows, i get There is an error selecting this partition for install.

I want to install windows on my microsd card, are the steps the exact same beside the partition part?
Yes although we want to select Micro SD for the 2nd choice in the GUI, are you looking to try and test this soon?
We recently pushed an update for the GUI that makes the Micro SD part better so definitely interested in your experience.
Hi, thanks for the tutorial, I have one question. if I want to factory reset my steamOS will that ruin the dual boot?
Could you use 1 usb and 1 sd card of this?
Hi there! Yes this is absolutely fine, make sure to choose "Previous Setup" at the start of the Windows Installer so it looks just like mine.
Why did you partition on internal ssd instead of doing windows on micro sd card?
Hi there, thanks for your comment. Internal SSD is superior to Micro SD Card in many ways, our internal drive has far better read/write speeds than a Micro SD Card and performance in games is also better.
Running an operating system, background processes and the expectation of running AAA games all from a Micro SD is not recommended and a lot of stress for the Card which will eventually break as a result.
Our internal drive is built for these types of tasks and is a much more robust and reliable form of media.
I hope that helps 😊
@DeckWizard absolutely will do thank you so much!!
Thank you so much!

Which part specifically? Once you install the GUI, create and install config? Are you applying your own logos?
@ I use logo like you did. I don’t know why it show up only window logo but background and steam logo not show 😭
Have you tried carefully reviewing the steps I provide again? If we select our logo and background exactly as I specify it will work.
The guide has a very high success rate currently and I test the GUI on a regular basis, hopefully you can get it to work, you got this!
@@DeckWizard i did it thanks
Do you have to leave this on stable Chanel or can I put it on preview?
You can switch if you like but you will need to manually boot into steamos and perform the refind gui create/install again
