It’s easy to get a bit fuzzy when doing a tasting, especially if not have enough food beforehand. Very fun regardless. Cheers.
Thankfully I can get all but the Löwenbräu here in California. One other German brewery that ships a festbier out here is Weihenstephaner which is one of my favorites.
'Beer experts' actually alienate me from the beer that I love. I search out passion and relatability...you have that Simon otherwise I wouldn't have stayed for nearly an hour. You rock!!!
This, I love how passionate Simon is. That said, which normal person sniffs the glass for aroma, people just drink it without the pretentious sniffing. I wished more purveyors of beer would just drink it and make do without the sniffing and ramblings of what they detect. Nobody else does this, just drink it.
I've done Munich Ocktoberfest twice and both times I've stuck to the Hofbrau hall. Stunning beer and great atmosphere in there (for obvious reasons), but you do need to drink tactically if you want to make it to the evening. You need to be in by around 12:30pm to get a drinking spot. You must go at least once in your life.
I think if you want to avoid the fuzzy distraction is to have some clean water between beers, so you avoid having the last beer carrying on into the next. I can tell that you're always honest and passionate, what I look for in a beer reviewer.
I've never had a Monday morning like that !! Brilliant. Went to Octoberfest when I was 18 (now 56) !! Amazing experience. Great descriptions of the beers thanks. I will try as many as I can ! (But not in the morning) cheers
German Lager is my favourite beer style to drink in the summer and just as a general "I could go for a beer!" beer. Oktoberfest beer is like that with extra oomph. I really like all of these.
This is the best beer review channel on TH-cam IMO. I haven't watched your content in years when I went to st Omer in the north of France. The st Omer beer draught is very nice and they drink a lot of the Belgian beer in the north of France too and I watched your channel for the Belgian beer and drank a lot of them too. For me, way to strong, totally pissed after 3 large Belgians. Your story about your brother in law reminded me of how my older brother introduced me to German Weiss beer, dunkels. When you drink good beer as the German people do, the carlsberg, Heineken, bud etc are pure piss. I've never drank since and that was a long time ago. Now, you introduced me to beer I didn't know about on your channel like Schneider beer, Tap5. Stefan's pale ale etc and they are great beer. I can't even get them here where I live in Ireland and we are in the EU ????? This was an enjoyable video. I watched it drinking a bottle of bayreuther hell and einsiedler hell. I'm now going to open a lovely bottle of Schneider's bayrisch hell. All the best and cymrig abú 👍
Great video and has helped get me in the mood for my trip to Oktoberfest next week in Munich. You have to go, it really is incredible and an experience and every year I seem to go on the rollercoasters or drop towers after quite a few Mass (litres). Shame there wasn't any Augustiner in the lineup you tried. That tent is a favourite at Oktoberfest. Myself and my friends have tried Ayinger in Munich and none of us liked it ☹️
@13:10 I know exactly what you mean. When you´re knee deep in IPAs and stouts and your palate expects that flavour, having a lager, even though it might be the bees knees, it just wont do it justice since you´re not "there". I love me some nice west coast IPAs but the lagers and pilsners (and the belgians) is where it´s at, at the moment for my own palate. Cheers Simon!
Typically June/July would be too late for these. The name of most of these, Marzen, gives a clue as to when they’re brewed; March. Traditionally this was because of Bavarian law that only allowed beer to be brewed between September and April. Festbier has a higher alcohol content so that it would last over the summer months and still be good for Oktoberfest.
I’m commenting as I watch . I feel you are a Beer expert. But your humble with it . I’m a expert at my job , however I’m always learning as are all experts. Cheers 🍻 Speno .👍🏻
Great that this guy likes the german oktoberfest beers. Not all of them are the real oktober fest beers. Erdinger and Ayinger not beers from the october fest. I have them all in stock. May favorities this year - Augustiner and Hofbräuhaus. The beers all very good, but this 2 ones are the highlights for me. I`m from Bavaria.
These lagers are brewed in the month of March (Märzen). Lagers are bottom-fermented under refrigeration and need to "Lager" (ferment) for a longer period of time. Ales are top-fermented at a higher temperature which means they can be cranked out fairly quickly. It takes a bit more skill and patience to make a lager IMHO.
Glad you touched on the ‘effects’ of alcohol. No reviews really talk about it. Truth is, most of us enjoy the buzz as well but almost made to feel like it’s taboo. Drink responsibly my friends!
Alcohol is a harder drug than heroin. Comparison of brains from a heroin addict and an alcoholic show an almost healthy outcome in the former and a charred black appearance in the latter like it had been torched.
an expert aims to pass their passion and knowledge to others so that they may know the joy that is beer... so I would call you an educator - as I would certainly thank you whole heartedly for igiting a new passion for me - it takes people like you who don't just love a pint, but want to help others experience that amazing and tangible, simple pleasures that is beer - I can't afford expensive shoes, cars or houses - but I can enjoy a beer! Thank you for keepin' it real my man! - you're boss, Simon! Love your passion and honesty - the Yoda of Beer!
Great marathon review Simon! I had this case last year and it was very good. However I have decided that Oktoberfest beer is too strong for my taste. It took until the end of Christmas for me to finish them, drinking about one bottle a week. But I still enjoyed the quality and flavour! The Hacker Pschorr was my favourite because it wasn't just a stronger version of the brewer's lager or wheat beer like some of the others. As to whether you should call yourself an expert, to me you are, first and foremost, a fellow beer lover. But I also rely on you to suggest new beers to try. The vast majority of the time you are right so if that's not a measure of know how and expertise, what is?
Awesome video Simon. Sadly I'm taking a long break from drinking these days 😢 I love these types of beers. I've had a few german and october beers. Not as much as I'd like to. But everyone I've had I've enjoyed immensely. I have to say I really love the lovely and traditional looking labels of the German beers. Anyway all the beers look fantastic! Good stuff!
I remember going to Bremerhaven on the ferry from Harwich I was 16. My father saw weiss beer on sale in the boats bar and introduced it too me with much excitement , he hadnt had any since he left Germany in 1944
I wish I had a bottle of Sierra Nevada and Braueri Riegele's collaboration festbier from 2015, Simon. It was hands down my absolute favorite. I hope to tour Riegele sometime soon
Hi! For maself is the Riegele Browery one of the best in the world. I know many from theire beers - all absolutly great. I always get this beers by sending with the german post. Real great stuff.
Mate next year, (or maybe later in September) could we see Schneider Weisse fest weisse, weinhenstephaner, augustiner oktoberfest and maybe weltenburger's entry? No pressure. Love the videos anyway.
It's beer o'clock in Russia: Simon you're a brave man considering all that stuff on a Monday morning....in case I understood you right you've never visited the Oktoberfest yet? Great atmosphere, very tasty food like ducks, oxens and chickens but not cheap at all. Each day at the Wiesn can cost you easily 120 - 150 GBP depending on your personal preferences. Greets Paul
Very much enjoyed this video! I wish I could find the Löwenbrau Oktoberfest and the Spaten Oktoberfest (only can find the Märzen version)in the States. All the ones I have had are damn good. My number one would be the Ayinger and the perhaps the Hacker-Pschorr in second. Very Informative and entertaining video. Prost! 🍻
The Rothaus Marzen is also amazing, closer in style to something like Augustina Edelstoff, or Hacker-Pschoor Gold, than an Oktoberfest special, but top stuff never the less. I love you did this side by side! if I did it myself I'd be trashed, so I'm happy to see you suffer for your art. For me the Hofbrau is the best. I think it gets the balance between the malt and the citrus hops the best, while not being as sweet as the others. Then the Ayinger, then the Hacker-Pshoor, lowenbrau, and paulaner equally good. Spaten and Erdinger the weakest. Great review! I hope to see more flights like this in the future. All the Trappists maybe? Or Maybe all the big 6 German helles side by side? Or all the Big German Lagers side by side, warstiener, krombacher, becks, bittburger, vletins, jever ect.
Just to be clear: my comments are intended to be helpful. I only watch this channel for beer stuff, there's an honesty and enthusiasm to enjoy, but some moments let it down to getting the bigger viewing figures it can/should.
This is one hell of an army of Oktoberfest beers, they are all winners agreed, would like to see Weinstephaner Festbier that i considered the missing link
Great Video Simon! I've had a Paulaner and Hofbrau with you this evening! The 'wort' description for the Hofbrau is BANG ON! I'm leaning heavily towards the Lowenbrau and Spaten this year. The Hacker Pschorr and Ayinger were what I smashed into last year along with the Paulaner on the Sub. God I love beer. I'm learning German now thanks to beer and Rammstein!
I used to frequent a bar called “The Green Tree” in Edinburgh.(mid 1980’s) It drained all the slops from the pumps at the bar into a bucket in the cellar. This “brew” was then pumped back up to the bar as Green Tree Special. It was shite !
Weihenstephaner has some of the best wheat beers going in my opinion. Erdinger is nice but not as good as those. Looking forward to getting a chance to try that Erdinger Oktoberfest edition if I can, amongst the others. Nice collection for review there. I've used Beers of Europe a few times before, great selection of beers available to buy online at reasonable prices like you say.
There's a convenience shop in cardiff that sells a good selection of German and other beers from around the world, and you can buy all those beers there at the moment. my brother went on a tour of the ayinger brewery in July, said an absolute awesome day.
I have the good fortune to live near the Beers of Europe warehouse! I've tried all of these beers and it's hard to pick a best one, But, I'd go with the Spaten and Hofbrau as the best of the best!
I started looking for the oktoberfest beers way too late and only managed to find the Erdinger but its one of the best beers i've had all year. Always liked my stronger IPAs so the oktoberfest imports are right up my street. I'll be first in the queue next season.
Simon, Does Spaten make 2 styles of Oktoberfest ? The one we get in the states is a (Märzen Style) that pours a darker amber color with touch of hoppiness balanced with some caramel notes. 🍺🍺
Wiesen = Golden lager & Maerzen = Dark lager. Hobraeu, Paulaner, Spaten & Loewenbraeu = Wiesen (the same beer served at Oktoberfest). Ayinger & Hacker Pschorr = Maerzen (formerly served at Oktoberfest except for Ayinger because it was never brewed in Munich). G'Suffa!
I'm pretty sure that hacker pschorr serves the marzen at octoberfest. They returned to the original style. they are the only one of the six that does so.
Your taste in beer sounds the same as mine. Good German lager is the way to go as much as I like a pint of stout or the odd IPA. Germany's soft water and the brewers' understanding of yeast is a key factor when making lovely, sessionable Helles, Pilsner etc.
Ever thought of doing a ranking or category video Simon? For example one video that helped me get into beer was one titled ‘5 beers for people who don’t like the taste of beer’, granted it was a while back and I’ve got more of a taste and appreciation for beer, but the video was really unique. Maybe like a best recommendation for lager drinkers, or a top 5 beers to drink in summer, winter etc. just an idea. Enjoyed this video mate, thanks
In my opinion, the best to worst are - HB, Augusteiner, Paulaner, Hacker Pschorr, Spaten and Löwenbräu. Dunno what it is about Löwenbräu but I think all their range is poor.
Yes, unfortunately, it is not, imported into the US. About twenty years ago I could pick up a lowenbraü oktoberfestbier mini keg at the liquor store. I bought a couple of them, and that is what started my own love affair with the oktoberfest style. I remember a subtle but clear sweetness that I had never tasted before. Outstanding. And I don't think i've been able to find it again since. 😪
What an absolutely brilliant watch . 👌🏻. These beers are absolutely awesome . I wasn’t blown away with a couple , but all still great in their own way . The information in this review is fantastic and the fact your drinking on a Monday morning is just mint 👌🏻. Think I need to do exactly this and drink them all together to really compare them . I’m the same , and have really moved over to the great Lagers . I’m currently waiting for some scaffold to turn up and this video is keeping me well entertained. Cheers Simon 🍻Awesome . Speno
I haven't really drunk anything else since I first discovered Oktoberfest beers. There's no going back to regular lagers once you have been introduced to these beers in my opinion. I agree with everything you say and go through on this brilliant video Simon. I would however have to give the HofBrau at least a 9 too. Last year it was the best of them IMO but I think the Paulaner tops it this year.
Pleased to see you with a Nognö-glass for the Löwenbräu! In my experience Nognö is one of Norway's best breweries, possible alongside 7 fjell. :) The british drinking culture where a really TASTY 4% beer is considered strong, is admirable! P.S: I don't like to consider myself an expert either but I have tried more varieties of beer than anyone I know personally. You've most likely tried 4-6 times more beers than I have and I think you can use the term as long as you consider EVERY mouth of beer you swallow. Most people are happy to just see the progression towards drunk.
Outrageously good. How about an intermission with a Monday morning bockwurst sausage break next year? Good luck sorting things out with your brother in law!
GREETINGS FROM THE START OF OKTOBERFEST 2023.... i was watching this video, and my roomate suprised me with a case of PAULANER fest beer variety pack. i am currently enjoying this video while drinking a PAULANER HEFE WEISEN.... stay real, simon :D
10/10 ............ this should be an educational video on how to correctly pour a German Oktoberfest style beer, just like you would receive in a German bar with the standard massive foamy head, i see so many other reviewers pour their beer out like it's Nitroglycerin .......... There's quite a anti Erdinger wheat beer view held by many when compared to the other options readily available in the UK like Weihenstephaner, Paulaner, Franziskaner etc and rightly so but this Oktoberfest offerring from Erdinger is a top, top draw weizen. I would easily put this beer ahead of all the recognised wheat beers previously listed above,. This stuff is brewed specifically to be consumed in copius quantities, name another wheat beer that is more sessionable which can match it's quality ?
I could think of many worse ways to spend a Monday morning... I've been to Munich but not during Oktoberfest. There are so many great beer halls and Biergärten in Munich I didn't really feel like I was missing out by not going during Oktoberfest. Honestly I'm not sure I'd like it. Too crowded, too hard to get a good spot, long queues for the toilets... I also tend to prefer the regular lagers from HB, Löwenbräu etc. as they're lighter and not as worty/bready or boozy. Though I do try to pick up a few Oktoberfest beers every year.
Nice videos. IF there were a way for you to put the bottle that you are talking about on a stand so it's up close to the camera while you are discussing it that would be helpful because I lose track of which one you are talking about. I sort of want to connect the label and name to the talking points. I am doing other things in the background so after 45 minutes in I have no idea what beers you are even trying.
By 11am he will be out in the street fighting the rag n bone boys.😂😂
You just missed my all time favourite from Munich big 6. Augustiner brau Oktoberfest beer. Cheers mate🍻
Have you been able to find it in the US?
The wife and I like to enjoy our own beer tastings at home. I hide the bottles behind a large book and she chooses her fav without knowing what’s what. Good fun and a nice way to taste various beers.

Stuff the rest of them Simon , 12 years and going from strength to strength. Top video as always. Prost!
The Oktoberfest from Erdinger destroys the regular one they put out. Much better! Cheers!
The Paulaner octoberfest now in Aldi for a staggering £1.79! Bought 8.
German Lager is my favourite beer style to drink in the summer and just as a general "I could go for a beer!" beer. Oktoberfest beer is like that with extra oomph. I really like all of these.
Real Oktoberfest beer is the type Marzen - not a Lager
@@MJODENG Märzen are lagers.

Lager means to store not ferment.
The fermentation has finished when the lager(store) the beer
It was Augustiner helles lager that blew your mind. I remember your video.
It’s what blew my mind in Germany as well.

Is that a 1,5L stein at 27:43? I've had 1L obviously but didn't know you could get even bigger!
Try the Samuel Adams Oktoberfest. It's a Marzen, and delicious. Cheers.
Nope

Ok... prove me wrong
Lowenbrau and spaten oktoberfest beers fantastic on the perfect draft.
this type of beer is why i love this time of year
I really like the concept of the 7 octoberfest beer shootout. Can you do another one with 7 czech beers?
Mention some please. I met Pilsner Urquell and is my # 1 now.
Have you ever tried the Ayinger Oktoberfest Marzen? It's my top Oktoberfest beers, although not an "Official" Munich brewery. Cheers!
Great video, first class si👍
Would love to try that Lowenbrau Oktoberfest. Don't think that one is imported here in the U.S. Great vid. Cheers!
Oh yeah new subscriber here!
Great video Simon loved it 👍🍺
What an absolutely brilliant watch .
Hofbräu is my favorite, i hoop soon its available in the shops
I kept waiting for the beer expert to show up.
Wonder what makes one a expert?
@@dmac7403 On beer? Well, that's open to a debate I will swiftly remove myself from.
lol
Pleased to see you with a Nognö-glass for the Löwenbräu! In my experience Nognö is one of Norway's best breweries, possible alongside 7 fjell. :)
The british drinking culture where a really TASTY 4% beer is considered strong, is admirable!
P.S: I don't like to consider myself an expert either but I have tried more varieties of beer than anyone I know personally. You've most likely tried 4-6 times more beers than I have and I think you can use the term as long as you consider EVERY mouth of beer you swallow. Most people
are happy to just see the progression towards drunk.
Does the UK typically get Samuel Adams beers? If so, this year's Oktoberfest Marzen is a really great beer. Recommended.

Outrageously good. How about an intermission with a Monday morning bockwurst sausage break next year? Good luck sorting things out with your brother in law!
Expert or not, for me it's all about entertaining, and you're good at that 👍🍺
GREETINGS FROM THE START OF OKTOBERFEST 2023.... i was watching this video, and my roomate suprised me with a case of PAULANER fest beer variety pack. i am currently enjoying this video while drinking a PAULANER HEFE WEISEN.... stay real, simon :D
Simon you must visit the Octoberfest . It’s out of this world beyond words 🍺🍺
just out of curiosity, what do you do with all these beers once youve poured them?
😆
Hmm...
Wonder...
@@RichardHowells1234 what do you think lol
I will be at Oktoberfest in a few weeks, and it's my understanding that no weat beers are served at Oktoberfest just Festbeirs, lagers, marzens.
Wrong
Did you ever think about making your own brew, you already know the basics ,I think you would be very good at it
You are a joy to watch.
Totally agree naynay. Unpretentious, enlightening, funny and engaging. Perfect to watch whilst you have a beer yourself
It’s how I started pouring most beer - it makes it way more tasty and drinkable without getting you bloated from carbonation
I'm gonna try every single one of these beers ... i'm on a mission 😊🍺
23:02 '...lets do the time warp again!' Who else?
25 minutish mark part - when I'm a bit tipsy and you then gave me a Fosters instead of a Pilsner Urquell I'm sure I'd still find it tastes like muck
The flip top packaging is cool
Next time you should do a resume of 7 different german Alt Beer and Kolsch Beer and german Pilsner that would be Fun to watch
