still my greatest and confusing German memory was attending the closing of a night at the Spring Festival in Munich, in one of the halls. The atmosphere was unlike anything I had ever experienced before, beer was flying, people were dancing on table tops and then they started playing Robbie Williams Angels, and the place just erupted in singing. Until this I had no idea why that song, but that memory still is the greatest travel memory ever.
It was the same in the Pschorr tent on Thursday night, the place went crazy, i had no idea it was such a big song in Munich. The entire tent was on the benches and tables bouncing and singing along at the top of their voices. Amazing.
I live right by the north fork on the Shenandoah river in Virginia. The Shenandoah barely goes thru West Virginia down by Harper’s Ferry. Great grandmother was from Baden-Württemberg. Prost!
I am so excited! Tomorrow I am on my way to München and the Oktoberfest. I live in the US now, but I was born in München and my Grandfather was a Kappelmeister ( bandleader) when I was little. It's been 52 years since I was there! I used to go on stage with his band, and he would let me "play" along on my little plastic toy instruments. Such fond memories. Thank you Feli for the quick lesson!
The fact that they all sung along to Country Roads at the first NFL game in Munich made me take notice. That was simply amazing that 69, 811 German people all sung at once this song.
I will never be able to travel, but I was lucky enough to go to at least three Bear Mountain Oktoberfests near Peekskill, NY with my late husband. The crisp autumn air and the leaves flying, the aroma of outdoor-grilled sausages and meats, the gift and folk-art stalls, and especially the gemütlichkeit. As for music, I'm a traditionalist. My husband and I polka'd to the the brass band playing really old German (and some Polish) standards. We and complete strangers chatted and laughed together as we sat at long tables. We all raised our huge steins and rocked back and forth (singing along as best we could) to "Eins Zwei G'suffa". Wonderful way to celebrate autumn!
I am from the US but lived in Germany for 4 years from 2000 to 2004. Robbie Williams was king. When I moved back to the states, no one knew who Robbie was. I was in disbelief that a world-famous singer like him was unknown in the US.
Yes, thats amazing. Here in Europe from Sweden to Italy, Williams is (was) such a superstar. I have family in California and when i went there and asked them about him, they never had heard of him before...
I'm a music-loving American born, raised, and living in Michigan USA, and assure you I know Robbie Williams ever since he was in the group Take That. Life Thru A Lens, his first album, is a stone cold classic that every pop music afficionado should have. BTW, the song Angels is on it.
Wow! Memories! Many thanks! I was a US student in Germany in 1991 and am shocked at how many of the German songs from your list I recognize and can even sing forth after all these years (despite not having been much into the music scene). I especially remember "Marmor Stein und Eisen Bricht" and the classic drinking hall songs. I know the song but did not know the story behind "Skandal im Sperrbezirk." You did a super job presenting this list!
Thank you for this! My father was German, born a few years before the war, and after bouncing around Germany throughout the war (avoiding places that were targets for air raids, etc.) they settled in Munich after the war. (My grandfather was held as a POW there.) The singing is such a Bavarian thing! My father loved to sing, and we'd spend hours singing together - in the car while driving, he'd make up cute lyrics to songs that were about us kids, etc. I can just imagine him there, beer in hand, but so busy singing he forgets to drink! (He died of COVID, in a nursing home with dementia, in early 2021, but our last wonderful outing was to the Sterling Renascence Festival in 2017, where he sat and sang along with the musicians, and had a lovely memory that stuck with him even as his condition deteriorated. Look up the group "Empty Hats" here on youtube, there are a lot of videos of them, and they brought him such delight that day.) Oktoberfest is over this year, but next year, if you can, raise a glass and sing a song in my father's honor. (Not like you wouldn't be doing those things anyways!)
Don't think i had ever heard the song Angels by Robbie Williams until you had mentioned something about it in a previous video. But i love it now. And when i got married in March 2022. I ended up using it as my entrance song. if it weren't for you, i wouldn't have known about it, so thank you!
As a fellow Bavarian attending the similar Rosenheimer Herbstfest for the last two weeks I highly approve your choices, you’ll hear these songs every evening there. Keep up these videos, authentic and fun to watch! Liebe Grüße vom Chiemsee!
Back in 2010-2012 they used to sing "Traum von Amsterdam" by Axel Fischer in the tents at Cannstatter Volksfest in Stuttgart. I can't imagine that wasn't also popular in Munich. It's a banger of a song.
I've heard many of these songs at Karneval here in NRW. Atemlos was huge when my kids were in primary school. They loooove Sweet Caroline here, which I was really surprised about. They even sing it at Sports events.
Presenting these songs and videos just pushed up some exxxtremely good memories. It's just impossible to find words for the feeling , when about 6000 drunken friends arehootin with you in a tent to live music. Incredible!
So, a year later I must retire from playing bass in my band due to medical issues. On the same day in 2024 when you start Octoberfest, I play my final show. Some kind of connection. It amazes me how many connections there are between my last show and my love for Germany and my 16 years there. So here in Arizona the summer lingers, and I watch so many of your videos as well as the live streams and I am now about to finish the last of my Pauliner. Soon here the colder days will arrive, but I still hold this very special Octoberfest in my heart and I will finish the last of my German beers tommrow night. Until next year. Prost my good friends🍻
sorry Feli correction ;-) Udo Jürgens was Austrian and additionally held the Swiss citizenship! He won the ESC 1966 for Austria. I am 50+ and I know ALL of these songs but have never been to the Oktoberfest. Greetings from Vienna 😊
@@kimberHD45 "foul"? I'm doubting _your_ class now. This song was definitely a part of my youth. Also popularized a certain phone number, I suspect it hasn't been used since.
Glad to find your channel.... I was US ARMY Air Defense based in Bitburg when the Air Force had a Air base flying F-15 and sometimes A-10s. I lived there for 4 years. Ich vermisse deutschland ! While living in Germany, I traveled to all four corners of Germany. In my opinion, Munich is the most beautiful city! I went with some friends up in the Zugspitze mountains to ski, but this Texas country boy didn't know how to ski.... I tried 😪... but enjoyed sitting at the base on a bench drinking bier and eating a good Brat while watching everyone have fun. I basically crashed and burned.... 😄. Oh, forgot to add.... when Bitburg would have their version of October fest....we did the 🐔 🐥 🕺
In the Schlager category, some other songs are "Cora - Komm, wir fahren nach Amsterdam" und "Andrea Berg - Du hast mich tausendmal belogen", or "Die Gefühle haben Schweigepflicht".
Considering that I'm from one of the countries of the former Yugoslavia, so I don't travel particularly long to the event, I once went ten years in a row... the only problem is finding who will drive afterwards... I love Bavarian kitsch, and Bavarians are deep in kitsch great video
I arrived in Munich many years ago on October 7th, hoping for a great experience. It was pretty much over by then; the city being in a beer and roast chicken stupor... But persistence paid off, and we ended up at the Stammtisch at the Augustiner after a couple of weeks. Just enough German to be regularly polite to the very hard working and helpful ladies working there.
Why am I so surprised you’re literally like the UK with the songs I love it so much ❤️🏴 I never felt more culturally close to other country other than Germany they say the USA but naaa UK and Germany are one together same culture and so much more love the video and Liebe aus Großbritannien 🏴
Especially when he said Who the Fuck is Alice? That is like a STAPLE of a song at a party in the UK as well as Angels. People say Germany's our cousin, and perhaps its true after all...
Another Party-Schlager is "wo war ich in der Nacht von Freitag auf Montag", translated to "where have I been during the night from Friday to Monday" about a guy, who has been on parties all the weekend and wakes up on Monday without memories from that weekend. It's from the Party-Singer Peter Wackel
Small correction: Udo Jürgens was actually Austrian, not German, from Carinthia. Fun fact: he is the worldwide longest represented singer in the charts in the world: from 1958-2015. He also sang the intro for the kids TV series Tom and Jerry as well as Once upon a Time...Man in German. And a small personal anecdote: Some 18 years ago I worked at a small hut for cyclists to refresh themselves by a bike path. And wo showed up completely sweaty after a long ride? The lead singer of STS :D
I was in Germany with the US Air Force when Anton Aus Tirol was all over the airwaves. And in an odd coincidence, I bought a Viva TV compilation CD (in a gas station of all places) that had the song on it. But the disk was purchased because it had Unsterblich by Die Toten Hosen on it, which I had discovered on Viva TV. (a GREAT band, BTW)
Well...i am Dutch and i like the oktoberfest music and party scene... I just learned a lot new songs from you in this vid! Thanks! But i miss also a few very famous songs like: Fiesta Mexicana by Rex Gildo. 7 Sünde by Marc Pircher. Liquido by Narcotic. Andrea Berg - Du hast mich 1000 mal belogen. Ich bin wie du - Marianne Rosenberg. Peter Maffay - Du, Almklausi - Mama Lauda... Highway to hell - AC/DC, Rockin all over the world - Status Quo, Immer lacht - Stereo Act ft. Kerstin Ott. Haus am See - Peter fox, Rammstein - Du hasst mich and Dicke Titten...Sierra madre - Zillertaler Schürzenjäger, Wunderbar - Tenpole Tudor, Anita - Costa Cordalis...and many more ofcourse! Viel spass am Wiesn!!
We learned "Anton Aus Tirol" in my German class over a decade ago and that song (and the music video) still pops into my head every so often these days.
„Hey Baby“ war im Film Dirty Dancing und der Film war und ist seit 1988 so extrem populär in Deutschland das viele der Songs wahre Ohrwürmer geworden sind.
I was pretty much confused when I first heard "Viva Colonia" in einem bayrischen Bierzelt. Fun fact: This year the Höhner even played at the Metal festival in Wacken (WOA).😃 Greetings from Cologne 👋
I'm up here in Cleveland and have been to the Wiesn 6 times. That WHOLE city (Munich) is a drinking mecca. The Germans have such a good spirit. I would like to try out smaller town Volkfests. I started collecting Schlager records after finding a stash at a Goodwill. I have many Volk oriented records with the classics and really enjoy the 70's Schlager artists like Cindy & Bert, Lena Velatis, Katja Ebstein, Udo Jürgens, . Do you ever see their old records (vinyl) in Cincinnati anywhere?
Although I've never been to Oktoberfest, I did live in Bavaria for a few months in 1982. Fell in love with Spider Murphy Gang. Thanks for mentioning them!
I sure could have used you while I was stationed in Federal Republic of Germany in 1987 while I was stationed in Munchen in the late 1980s. I still live your podcasts, tho. Keep it coming, Feli.

An important rule to add. Get out of the way of the yellow stretchers and make room for the paramedics!
When using blackletter typeface (Frakturschrift) for "Oktoberfest" the st should be a long-s and t ligature and not a separate round-s (used only at the end of a syllable).
To those who feel like (some of) the shown clips are weird or strange: make sure to have another beer and things might get clearer. Most of the persons in the clips went that way and are just (pretty) far ahead of you!
We totally know the song Angels! Maybe not people of your age. But many Americans know all of the songs you showed. I'm from Cincinnati and of German descent. Thanks for your awesome videos! My cousin in law sang 99 luftballons at our wedding reception. She's an awesome Berliner that now lives in NKY.
I just went to Oktoberfest in Jacksonville, FL...Small little bar but the atmosphere was awesome. Headed over to Bavairan regiion in a couple weeks to live....we'll ne there 3-5 years. I can't wait to enjoy the culture, food and of course the beer there in Germany.
Hi from Colombia, I am certain these songs will help me with my german, I already had my Oktoberfest-ish event last week when in my university we made this little expo based on it giving info about it and it's brazilian version being the second biggest version of it. And a play about the history and all of that, hope you are having fun. Servus
What a thorough list! Thanks so much for making this. For me Zehn Kliene Jägermeister is my favorite drinking type song. Cannot help but get exuberant.
Hey Baby had a harmonica riff Bruce Channel taught that riff to John Lennon in the very very early days of The Beatles when he was touring England in early 63 .It's from John learning that riff that John went on to copy it and write Please Please Me the second version that we know that was there first number one.
I'm probably the only American on here that regularly listens to Schlager and Ballermann musik. The videos are even better than the lyrics. Great video by the way!
I'm from munich but I'm one of the people who don't go to the Oktoberfest. I liked it when I was a child and teenager but at some point it became too big and commercial. It is not longer the Oktoberfest I grew up.
Awesome! I’m so happy to find this. I’m dj’ing a 10-hour Octoberfest this year and this is just what I needed. I’ll definitely check out the other videos and Spotify playlists. Thank you from Jacksonville, Florida!
I lived in Germany for 6 years theres part of me that will always be there. That was 20 years ago and I still miss the people and country. Octoberfest is a blast. DJ Ötzi oooohhhh aaaahhhh!
This is good. So wish I was there to celebrate with my kids. First time I went was 20 years ago. Instead my littles and I had a nice drive to London and now at my inlaws nähe Köln before returning home to Poland. Hanging out with my wife's family today. Oktoberfest we can do another time but for children witnessing history is better. Alle die beste. Shöne Tag.

Just got home from Munich. I was so much fun to be back. Met some great new friends at the Augstiner Festhalle and finally went to Oide Wiesn for some more great Augstiner. Oddly, they played Happy Birthday almost as often as Ein Prosit!
Oktoberfest has been celebrated at a German school nearby me for years. I started going there in the mid-70's. Loved the party, the food, and of course, the drink. I do enjoy the dirndls also. The music tends to be more Bavarian traditional in past years here. Robbie Williams, "Angel," I have never heard. The so-called American music heard and sang to at Munich's Oktoberfest floors me. Had no idea our rock/popular music was such a hit. Enjoy yourself Feli, danke 👌👌
Living near Stuttgart, I visited Oktoberfest for the first time in the last week. I talked to Polish, spanish and british people and was surprised how much this feast supports international underschtänding.
actually, John Denver was only his stage name, his birth name was Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. That’s about as German as a name can be. 😂 Beautiful song, Take me home, country road.
Thanks for this post! My husband and I are throwing an Oktoberfest 2024 (Georgia, USA)party on Sept. 21 and your video is really helpful. Listening to all of the Schlager again takes me down memory lane.
My family & I are visiting Oktoberfest for the first time on Sept. 27-28 and I have to say, your videos are enormously helpful! I have been living in Vienna for 15 years so I am familiar with some of the music. Thanks for making these videos! Well done! I'm not much of beer drinker - I usually order a Rädler!
Even as "Munich native" I enjoyed this video a lot. But with "Skandal im Sperrbezirk" you should have mentioned the phone number even every kid in Munich knows... 😎And there is at least one important song missing: Sierra Madre
Interesting to see this under this video. But it's not true. Helene was born in Siberia, that's true at least, but since her family is of German origin her name has always been Helene Fischer. She said it so many times that this or similar Russian names are just made up by the press. It's crazy that so many pages on the internet still say this although it's not the truth.
(In Übersetzung🙃) (German was obigated for just two years, but I tried my best. You won't learn if you dont try.🙃)
Well, the last time I went to Oktoberfest, the Chicken Dance WAS played - like every 15 minutes! Granted, that was before Felicia was born. I‘ve been 4 times, and that‘s enough for my lifetime, but if you haven‘t ever been, you should definitely go.
Perfect advertisment timing. Feli introducing the first very important song for Oktoberfest with: "First and foremost a song that even the brass bands will play regularly throughout the day is this one..." ...and immediately after "this one" the ad for 'Parking Drives' Tour starts with the song Glitch blasting out my speakers. Great video as always btw. *thup
Tolles Video, Feli. Mach gerne weiter so.
In Tampa Busch gardens runs Bierfest in which the local breweries get together to serve tons of beer and sell lots of food which is actually kinda fun. Disney world always has the Oktoberfest restaurant inside the German pavilion in Epcot where it’s Oktoberfest year round. It’s modeled after some random countryside village square in Germany that you might eat and drink at. Unfortunately we were supposed to get something called the Rhine river cruise next door to this but never did which was supposed to be a ride that showed the history of Germany while going down the “rhine” minus ww2 for sensitivity issues. Mostly the pavilion is just eating and drinking maybe picking up a pickle ornament.
Busch Gardens Williamsburg in Virginia has a German area, with a Festhalle and a “Rhine river cruise,” very scenic. The Busch brewery is right next door😊
I was a little surprised that in the English language section there was no representation of probably the most famous German band in America-Scorpions. However I did find that they are from Hanover, which is a lot further north so that may be part of the reason.
Actually many germans don't like that Band, it's not considered very good. Always kinda funny to me when I hear an american rave about them. They pretty much have one single popular song which is Winds of change.
@@septimasnape Funny thing about Scorpions is that they're mostly known for their ballads like "Wind of Change" and "Still Loving You", when they're actually a hard rock band and have a couple of good hard rock songs as well
@@goldflo91 yeah I know, they are way better than most germans are aware of. Never met a german though who would willingly admit to being a fan of The scorpions. Too embarassing 😂😅
For me as a German who is not interested in football, your video was quite helpful because I never understand chants during football TV broadcast, and now I know what they are singing in the stadium (the Allee and BVB one). I was always wondering but had never known how to google the lyrics of those chants.

“Kids and drunk people are a lot alike, right?” Indeed! Truer words ne’er spoke, Feli.
I love that Bavaria is the Texas of Germany.
Don't mess with us just let us have our fun times!!!
Deutschland!!!
As a German descendant who has lived in West Virginia my whole life it makes me so happy they sing Take Me Home Country Roads at Oktoberfest!

The real kicker is that he had never been to West Virginia when he co wrote it 😅

Considering that I'm from one of the countries of the former Yugoslavia, so I don't travel particularly long to the event, I once went ten years in a row... the only problem is finding who will drive afterwards... I love Bavarian kitsch, and Bavarians are deep in kitsch
great video
The Members of the Bavarian Sports Club of Toledo, OH will be marching in the opening ceremony in Munich representing my hometown.
Hey Baby is the DJ Ötzi version. He's got some other covers that seem like they pop up at festivals, too.
@@RobertHeslop ya I think so we are very culturally similar so many ways and I love it
Another Party-Schlager is "wo war ich in der Nacht von Freitag auf Montag", translated to "where have I been during the night from Friday to Monday" about a guy, who has been on parties all the weekend and wakes up on Monday without memories from that weekend.
Yes, thank you! Don't you dare that our hero 😜😘 Love your videos. Giaß di aus Wean
As he was born in 1934 he did have the German citizenship for some years.... ;-)

My condolences. I am deeply sorry that you were tortured in such a manner. I hope you had a good counselor and can now live a normal life? 😅
„Hey Baby“ war im Film Dirty Dancing und der Film war und ist seit 1988 so extrem populär in Deutschland das viele der Songs wahre Ohrwürmer geworden sind.
Das, und vor allem: DJ Ötzi hat den Song im Jahr 2000 gecovered und war damit lange Zeit in den Charts vertreten!
I’m from NH USA and was at the 200th anniversary…it was amazing!
I was pretty much confused when I first heard "Viva Colonia" in einem bayrischen Bierzelt.
Fun fact: This year the Höhner even played at the Metal festival in Wacken (WOA).😃
Greetings from Cologne 👋

I'm up here in Cleveland and have been to the Wiesn 6 times. That WHOLE city (Munich) is a drinking mecca. The Germans have such a good spirit. I would like to try out smaller town Volkfests. I started collecting Schlager records after finding a stash at a Goodwill. I have many Volk oriented records with the classics and really enjoy the 70's Schlager artists like Cindy & Bert, Lena Velatis, Katja Ebstein, Udo Jürgens, . Do you ever see their old records (vinyl) in Cincinnati anywhere?
If you join some smaller Volksfest - events, I´d recommend Straubinger Gäubodenfest, Rosenheimer Herbstfest oder das Dachauer Volksfest.
Just spent this weekend in Munich at Oktoberfest. Awesome experience. The parade was unbelievable
When using blackletter typeface (Frakturschrift) for "Oktoberfest" the st should be a long-s and t ligature and not a separate round-s (used only at the end of a syllable).
Thank you, I wanted to comment on this, too. But then I thought it'd be to complicated to explain. 👍
Vogelwiese, Böhmische Liebe, Böhmischer Traum und Dem Land Tirol die Treue!

Großartig. Danke für diesen Channel
Now I want to go Party in Germany. Looks very fun, energetic & blow off some stress for the year.
Hi from Colombia, I am certain these songs will help me with my german, I already had my Oktoberfest-ish event last week when in my university we made this little expo based on it giving info about it and it's brazilian version being the second biggest version of it. And a play about the history and all of that, hope you are having fun.

Eins , Zwei, Gesuffa! I’m really old- I also remember the Chicken Dance.
What a thorough list! Thanks so much for making this. For me Zehn Kliene Jägermeister is my favorite drinking type song. When it goes
Cannot help but get exuberant.
Just went for opening day in Munich and had a blast! Besides the cold weather and the rain. 😅
Excellent job. Having both German and English translations was great. Good prep for Oktoberfest! Thanks
Wait...I really have to check that out! ;-)
No mention of Melissa Naschenwang? Not exactly October fest classic but a real crowd pleaser, especially her song "die ganze nacht".
Awesome! I’m so happy to find this. I’m dj’ing a 10-hour Octoberfest this year and this is just what I needed. I’ll definitely check out the other videos and Spotify playlists. Thank you from Jacksonville, Florida!
I'm flying over to Stuttgart for their festival. Been to Munich 8 times for Oktoberfest.. LOVED every minute of them. Have fun Feli....
Viel Spaß auf dem Wasen!
Have fun on the Canstatter Wasen

The two classics at the Frankenmuth, MI Oktoberfest were "In Heaven There is No Beer" and "Roll Out the Barrel"
Hey, another Mollie B fan? I was on the Alaska cruise with her and Ted and the gang. I danced a Waltz with her.
It's so good to see people enjoying life again at Oktoberfest. This was a very fun video!
Wow, danke!
Perfect, I just can say "equal goes it loose" -> you agree ??????????
Voxxxclub always comes to Oktorberfest Blumenau in Brazil! and everyone loves them here!
Fan of " Vielen Dank für die Blumen " myself.
I have been to Oktoberfest 6 times in München 🍺🤪❤️. Absolutely a must and so great 👍. Ich liebe es.
Next year will be my 25th Oktoberfest! I agree with your list, but the queen, the Wies'n Hit of 2022 is absolutely LAYLA. Greetings from Verona
I knew of Robbie Williams from Take That "Back for Good" in 1996. I was surprised when I heard Angels at Oktoberfest in 2018.
These songs give me the biggest flashback😂
Living near Stuttgart, I visited Oktoberfest for the first time in the last week. I talked to Polish, spanish and british people and was surprised how much this feast supports international underschtänding.
actually, John Denver was only his stage name, his birth name was Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. That’s about as German as a name can be. 😂 Beautiful song, Take me home, country road.
I was today years old in learning this.👍
Thanks for this post!
My favorite Octoberfest festival was in Salzburg, Austria .... much more quaint, cozy and better to celebrate and meet people.
You should be a teacher Feli. I never heard of the word Wiesn before. Always learn something new from ya! ( sorry I originally spelled it wrong )
Now all Americans will use the word "wisen". Perfect.
I still have my Mitgleidskarte from Zum Fritz, in Herzogenaurach........yes I remember some of these songs!
Even as "Munich native" I enjoyed this video a lot. But with "Skandal im Sperrbezirk" you should have mentioned the phone number even every kid in Munich knows... 😎And there is at least one important song missing: Sierra Madre
Not only in Munich . 32168 is the number of Rosi 😂
Nearly everyone in Germany knows it . Spider Murphy Gang is good stuff 👍🍻
My trivia contribution: I love Helene Fischer's music, but was surprised to learn she was born Jelena Petrovna Fischerova in Siberia!
Someday I'll go to Octoberfest, I don't know when, but I refuse to die without going at least once. Also your dirndl is gorgeous
(In Übersetzung🙃)
(German was obigated for just two years, but I tried my best.
Oktoberfest sounds like a blast. I want to be there!
Perfect advertisment timing. Feli introducing the first very important song for Oktoberfest with:
"First and foremost a song that even the brass bands will play regularly throughout the day is this one..."
...and immediately after "this one" the ad for 'Parking Drives' Tour starts with the song Glitch blasting
out my speakers. Great video as always btw. *thup
So excited to be attending my first Oktoberfest this year!! I have really enjoyed your channel and learning from you!
Angels by Robbie williams is also used as a closing song on a lot of other "festivals" in germany.
Thank you for making this video even though it lost in the poll!
I'll be coming back to München (25-28.09), 6 years since last time, for my first ever Oktoberfest! Really looking forward to it!
"Zieht den Bayern die Lederhosen aus!"
= Strip away the traditional trousers from the Bavarians!"
