Maybe there is a flaw/problem that's causing these processors to destruct prematurely.
That is cause when the CPU is overvolted it does that.
In mobo bios they set the cpu to overvolt.
Many motherboards do that.
My 3800X was stock at 1.448v I undervolted it to 1.320v.
Undervolt your zen and zen2, Not sure if this applies to zen3.

I am half suspecting it is the IO chip failing.
A couple of years ago I seem to remember a few rumblings about AMD reliability, perhaps there was a bad batch?

Chip shortage. The demand is too high for quality/durability check from the factory so the CPU could have been a R3 from binning in normal condition but since we're still in a unusual condition, it may have been quick tested for getting the chip out of the factory to satisfy demand.
From what I've noticed and tested with all stock settings my Ryzen 5 3600 was using 1.45v during certain workloads which is "normal" for these chips, but in gaming scenarios i noticed it used to use 1.45v - 1.5v which is way too high, so i contacted Amd technical team and they basically told me to leave all the settings on auto which was of no help. So i ended up doing my own research on these chips, mostly testing theories on my own system and then i came to a conclusion that the way voltage is applied to these chips in an all core scenario is not correct, so to test this i manually set my load-line to level 3 and used the per ccx mode on my motherboard with the override vcore option. This resulted in better voltage control and better overclocking results.
The values achieved using this method:
CCX0 @4.5Ghz
CCX1 @4.4Ghz
core vids @1.3v
Vcore @1.326v
previous stock values:
CCX0 and CCX1 @4.1 - 4.2Ghz
core vids light load 1.45v
in-game 1.45 - 1.5v
prime 95 1.25 - 1.28v
in conclusion the stock auto settings causes the chip to be overvolted which can result in degradation and in-time possibly killing the chip.
Note: all test were at stock 90A EDC
All these results are from personal testing and can vary from one chip to another.
A lot of this can probably be blamed on the motherboard manufacturers honestly, they have a tendency to not use AMD's specs for their default or "auto" settings on stuff, a lot of this is to push a bit more performance out of the chip so they show up better in tests etc... It's very scummy behavior because it's not clear at all that you're running outside spec.
There's an even better solution for this. Buy Intel. Don't buy AMD cpu:s. Those AMD Ryzens keep dying left and right.
Never would experience this in an intel cpu. Using computers since first gen 8086 days, only amd cpus are the one to die.

It could simply be that the popularity of the R5 3600 and 3600X CPUs inflates the perceived failure rate. Could also be low quality motherboards killing them. Who knows. Just to add another data point, I have been running a 3600 for nearly 2 years without issue.
people say same about all large brands. 3600 was a phenomenon in terms of popularity and it's same with mice like deathadder. you can say 1000 failures...on like 10 mil unit scale :D
My 3600 kick the can too. Send it back for warranty they replaced with the same let’s see how long it last. First one lasted under a year.

Full stock, all extra I don't need off in the BIOS (so not OC boosters and so on) and PBO off plus a 2666mhz kit.
Worked perfectly fine until one day I got a BSOD whole watching youtube and the CPU was dead on the spot.
Got it replaced under warranty and the new one is still running, I just hope it stays that way.
BTW fun fact, I didn't do a CMOS reset when I got the new CPU but the replaced on does use less voltage and got less hot to begin with, also I get around 50mhz more in all core turbo, so maybe the first one was just bad.
But still full stock and the first one died, I know people that have 3700x with fast memory, PBO on and OC and they run fine, even on worse and cheaper motherboards than mine (and in one case, on exactly the same motherboard).
@@stysner4580 I'm glad for that and my 3300X. I'm able to run that at a pretty low voltage with the max boost clock stable. Then again, its only a quad-core.
Just a suggestion but in all my years working on computers I've never seen a bad cpu kill a motherboard, but I've seen several bad motherboards kill cpus. So, as a general rule I always test the unknown cpu in a good board before testing a good cpu in an unknown board.

My interest in building/diagnosing PCs started when my older brother refused to help me with my PC. It would randomly turn off - like no windows shut-down, it'd just turn off (It had a power on range of anywhere from a few seconds from start-up to an hour after). My first instinct was to clean it. I know now that having my PC on a carpeted floor isn't all too healthy for my PC in the long run, but I had nowhere else to put it. While cleaning it, a pillow feather flew out of the PSU. Not knowing the damage a feather can do to a PSU, I thought it was fixed after it was removed. Obviously, it wasn't fixed. Not knowing what else to do after sorting through a few different options, I took it to Fry's Electronics.
I told the employee about my PC and how it'd randomly turn off. As soon as the words, "feather in the power supply," left my lips, he gave the slightest s**t eating grin I've ever seen. I had a sneaking suspicion that I needed to replace my PSU and that guy gave me the confirmation I needed.
I went home and ordered another PSU. The same PSU but a modular version (I didn't want to deal with stuffing all of the extra, unused, cables next to the drives). It was fixed after that.
Again, thanks for your awesome work! I've been able to help friends and family with their PC problems and I am grateful to have someone to keep learning from!
I loved the way you really show the process and the logical flow of how to test parts. This is the best part of the video and the honesty that you give when fixing parts. Seriously between this and the camera work, you deserve a medal!

Greg i love your FoF content. Its always interesting seeing the symptoms. I really like the process in testing and thinking about what to test next. I follow PC tech as a hobby. I did have a Ryzen system fail on me but it was 1700x and as i dont have parts to test if it was the CPU or the Motherboard. I ended up just replacing both instead of buying a 3600 and hoping it wasnt the mobo. So i bought a i5 11400F and a b560 mobo. After seeing this im kind of glad i didnt go with tthe 3600 route.

A couple of months ago, I had to RMA my R5 3600x I bought on Agust 2020 (so less than 2 years in total) because it died out of nowhere. One night was working fine, the next day it wouldn't post. No problems with the motherboard, or, apparently, the PSU. Don't really know what is going on with those, and I got a replacement chip pretty quick (although in the meantime I end up buying a 5600x) but it kinda sus that a lot of this chips are just dying.
My first 3800x bought in late 2019 died after about a day or two, started straight up black screening. Strange with these Zen 2 chips. My 2nd one has been fine for 2+ years lol
It would be a good idea to know the motherboards also the dead cpus was on. I wouldn't be surprised as it was first gen with the PBO feauture, some motherboard BIOSes sending high voltage to Cpu and eventually kill it.

Hey Greg! I don't know if this comment will reach you but here's my rig setting an example of nothing is unlikely when you're cursed:
My rig: R9 5950x, TUF 3090, Asus Crosshair VIII Formula, Lian Li Galahad 360, all in O11 Dynamic XL
April 2021 I finished my build after waiting for a R9 5950x for 1.5 months
-> Included GPU sag bracket had wrong threaded screws, had to DIY my own bracket
-> Corsair commander pro came with dead Thermal probe port (I ignored it)
->A PWM fan port dies
-> 3 months later my UPS died (2KVA server grade UPS)
-> Main Board replaced after 1 week-> Died next day
-> Main Board replaced after 2 weeks-> Died next day again
-> New main board replaced after a month-> Gives off 90db of noise of relay switch -> replaced after a 2 weeks and is now fine
Motherboard dies ( gives a PROCHOT Ext signal and CPU throttles to 500mhz) -> Asus gave me a USED AND REPAIRED board after 10 days, I refuse but they insist -> Bios chip dies the same day
-> New mobo after a week
-> Galahad 360 AIO dies (overheats to oblivion and cpu throttles to 800mhz) -> Got a replacement 5 days later
-> while replacing the old cooler, superglue equivalent MX5 thermal paste took the cpu out with the cooler even after me being super careful
-> Bent cpu pins-> wasn't very bad and got fixed but that definitely took a year out of my lifespan
PC works fine for 3 months
-> A Radiator fan dies -> replaced in 2 weeks
->Did a bios update, CPU throttled to 800mhz after a gaming session once again
-> I revert bios (thankfully I had previous bios)
The CPU has once throttled after reverting but has been working okay-ish
Still high idle temps
Ambient temp: 36° C
Idle temps: 50° C
If anything breaks again I'm selling this garbage, I'm done, way too much stress, not gonna build a pc ever again probably

From my own very limited experience it does feel like chips are getting pushed much harder then they used to be and are dying much more often. It's no wonder there's not much to gain from overclocking modern CPUs compared to what we were used to in the past since the manufacturers already push them so close to their limit. During this pandemic, I've been using my PC a lot more (work from home and personal use) and i had my 3700x dying on me. One of my colleges had his 2 month old 12700K die on him a few days ago and is now struggling with the warranty to get a replacement.
I remember hearing rumors a couple years ago about high failure rates with Ryzen CPU's. The rumors were supposedly overblown. Appears that may not be the case.
you'd have to look at the macroeconomic data. For example, I'd be interested in seeing the actual calculated failure rate. Even if you had 50 or 100 failed 3600x CPUs, out of the millions that were sold that's a VERY low fail rate.

I built my first PC about 3 months ago, all new stuff and have been having so many issues.
Seeing all these other people having similar issues is making me feel way better,
and also that I might be able to sort this out!

I would suggest contacting AMD as it seems odd that you have encountered this within a short distance of your location and with the same SKU
I am sure they are willing to look into this as it makes there products look unreliable and if we know what the problem is there might be a way to prevent this from happening
I had a 3800x die after a week, got it replaced with the warranty. My new one is 100% and I sold it and now I have a 5950x.
@@ALLinx87 A component dying after few weeks of use is kind of normal, but a CPU dying after months of use I would say is a bad batch, because a CPU is the last thing that die in a computer. It can be run for a decade without problems.
Extreme tech did a piece on AMD failure rates last year. A vendor reported DOA rates of around 3% across the board for AMD chips. In comparison, the vendor said they have only seen 1 DOA Intel chip in the entirety of their business history, and it was a 9700k.
Power GPU was the company. Harken back to the FX chip days and close to 1/3rd of all chips were DOA.
But these are not DOA, these were working for a long time before failing. Completely different issue.
He even fixed it before.

It's most likely that the reason for you finding 3600/3600X chips dying more often is just the fact they were the golden value option that basically everyone went for if they were building a system when Ryzen 3000 was current since the price to performance was so good on the 3600 specifically.

Really love your videos and have honestly become addicted to them. I am so sad I didn't know about you longer ago as I do live in the Orlando area. I actually had a computer a month ago not show a display but powered up. I tried my best to fix it and was extremally stressed being a full time student and having a salaried position. working 10-11 hour days. I had to scramble and buy a prebuilt, I certainly did not overpay at least. It all worked out as I then took parts from that computer and made a new computer for my Niece. Who is now blown away by the power of a good graphics card, I bought her a 6650 xt and she has no businesses having a card that good. Appreciate what you do and helping others for no cost, now I actually have the knowledge I wish I had at that moment.
You will probably enjoy hearing all the things I did and what the issue actually was. I took the GPU out and really cleaned it up, along with the motherboard. I tried running one stick of ram but nothing, turns out I didn't try both ram sticks. I later discovered that one of the ram sticks was broken, and that was the problem. You should have seen me researching how to flash a bios and looking everywhere for the battery only to realize it was behind the GPU and hidden. The GPU, CPU, PSU and board are still good. I may buy a cheap case and ram, throw it together and give it to someone in my family.
Good Ol' quality control, gotta love it.

I personally ran into an issue exactly like these symptoms twice in short succession, both of which were motherboard problems. I was fairly confident the board had died here too from the start of the video, but I guess sometimes bad silicon is all it takes. Good video, it was interesting to see you go through the same steps and come out with a different answer.

Hey Greg been enjoying your series of Fix or Flop! I just wanted to let ya know that I have a Ryzen 5 3600 since Jun of 2020 i believe so far it's held up! Praying it continues for a few more years lol.

I had a similar issue and it was the SATA cables, so I pulled them all and used M.2 and the computer has run fine for five years. I did try a mechanical drive a month ago and had the same problem. I went as far as buying a new X99 SLI Plus motherboard and 5820K so I have an old motherboard and CPU sitting in a box.
I think it could be cool to do a special live episode of fix or flop where Greg and us viewers can collaborate to fix a pc or maybe even multiple if the first one is quick.
It's interesting how this series exposes reliability issues that would otherwise get swept under the rug. The value of this series is incredible.

when I was working on my rig, a brand new build.... I hadf the same problem arise of the unit wouldnt power on, and the problem, again was the soldiered connections on the actual power switch... a broken wire. I wound up having to replace the power switch module and it was good to go. a simple but frustrating issue.
I'm very happy with your videos I have multiple gaming computers I'm always taking them apart just cuz I like it.

Hey Greg! Great video as always. Looking at the batch numbers of the defective CPUs, there is a high probability they might be in warranty. Could you try to get in touch with AMD and get all these chips replaced and possible request AMD to investigate this as well?

I’ve run into a similar looking problem with my ryzen 5600x. The PSU would turn on and fans would spin but no output. I tried resetting CMOS and then had that clicking PSU issues. I then reset CMOS while removing the battery and that fixed it. I would suggest giving that a shot. On a side note it happened when I moved motherboard from a MSI to a ASUS
had my 3600 x for almost 2 years now. runs fine, i also have an aio way larger than what it needs and a high quality MB hopefully itll all be good

Really like Signal RGB, also running Fan Control that JaysTwoCents reviewed. I've been able to remove all other RGB and fan control software from the PC. It handles all my devices with one exception which they, I'm sure, will add at some point. These are the solutions I've been looking for.
I have an R5 3600X here in Far North Queensland Australia that I''d be happy to post over to add to the pile. AMD cancelled the RMA request as I couldn't respond in the time that they required for further information because I was working interstate. Moved on and built another system. Let me know if you want it. No cost to you.

not sure if it was posted or saw but Jayz two cents did a video on this case there is a recall / fix for it since it will cause a short / fire by the riser cable where it folds the screw there needs to be replaced with a plastic one / plastic ring.

I had a 2600x die on me last month. I had to buy a new PSU and motherboard before I figured out it was the CPU. So I kept all my new parts and bought me a 5800x and everything works like a charm. BTW, the 2600x was only 3 years old. Kinda sucked but my build was due for upgrades anyway so I went ahead and got a 3080 to go along with everything else. Keep up the good work, Greg!
