      Yep. They sure are. Unless there's a good reason, don't cut a living tree here. On the other hand, rainforests have a lot of deadfall.

    • @Gakulon
      @Gakulon 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Space Wizard While I know it isn't a full on rainforest, the dead material is very important for rainforest ecosystems as the soil does not contain a lot of nutrients. Leaving the dead matter will allow the nutrients to go back into the soil and feed the living plants.

    • @MrPeabody67
      @MrPeabody67 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      -Will confirm, full on temperate rainforest, we get a minimum of a metre of per year.
      -Also, cutting deadfalls and standing deadfalls is legal (in BC) as long as it's not in a riparian or otherwise protected zone.
      -No cutting near waterways (15m from the bank I think).
      -Fires are an issue in Canada but 67% of burnt land is cause by lightning strikes.

    So the Cleaver seems to be heaver toward the tip making it a better all around tool. As it was designed to be. While the Dadao seems to be better balance thus making a better weapon. As it was designed to be.
    Interesting...

    • @Skallagrim
      @Skallagrim  7 ปีที่แล้ว +74

      The Reaver Cleaver is indeed heavier but it actually feels like the same weight because its shorter blade and longer handle make it more balanced.

    • @J2FINE1
      @J2FINE1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Dread, the Mad Smith reaver certainly has a physics friendly design. makes it well worth the price. but for budget minded buyers. the condor doesn't seem like too bad of a alternative purchase

    • @DreadtheMadSmith
      @DreadtheMadSmith 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** Oh, neat. I would have wagered the cleaver being less balanced overall.
      Can't really guess the weight of the handle.

    • @cyruskhalvati
      @cyruskhalvati 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      the cleaver was made for chopping and has the edge of a chopper while the dadao is lighter at the tip and has an edge that is much shallower, better for cutting, slightly worse for chopping. id say as a tool the cleaver good as long as one is not using it to carve wood, but the dadao seems to be a well designed weapon with the capabilities to do much more

    • @GuitarsRockForever
      @GuitarsRockForever 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      both are good for their own. the sword is more of a weapon, the cleaver is more of a tool.

  • @The_LIC

    Condor wins simply on price, its $90 to the reaver cleavers $400.

    • @Kingdomkey123678

      Leliana Livesley the Reaver Cleaver can also withstand getting shot (low caliber), cutting other blades, and crushing stone.
      Both blades may be great but the Reaver Cleaver is built to last several life times of abuse. It's price reflects that.

    • @adude9610
      @adude9610 7 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Leliana Livesley they're very close in effectiveness even though the cleaver is a bit better but the price difference is just absurdly enough to neglect that difference in quality

    • @The_LIC
      @The_LIC 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Skaianet It may be better and all that, but you could get 4 of the dadaos and have money to spare for the price of the reaver cleaver. Completely negating any of the benefits the cleaver has based on how close they are in effectiveness.

    The cleaver appears to be a better chopper from what I can see, but the dadao was a weapon of war for fighting humans, not ents. Maybe it handles better with less weight or has a finer edge less suited for wood and more suited for chopping limbs.

    • @horvathbenedek3596
      @horvathbenedek3596 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I am just going to copy my comment here that I wrote a few minutes before:
      "... if anyone is interested in why the Reaver Cleaver performs better at chopping than the Condor, can be directly attributed to thickness, indirectly to the small amount of resonance in the blade when coming into contact with the wood, as opposed to the dadao, which is relatively thin, and is even made of higher carbon steel, so it is more likely to flex. That is why the Dadao is more suitable for battle; the cleaver could potentially absorb all shock from an incoming sideways blow, as we've seen in in the shooting video, whereas the dadao is more likely to bend away (that is not to say that the cleaver would stand up against a gun; my guess is, the cleaver had a stronger quenching, because the creators knew that the thick material can retain a softer, resilient core after quenching; that is why the weapon broke from a gunshot, the outer, incerdibly hard surface cracked, compromising the blade.
      Well, at least that is my idea."
      As for actual combat, both weapons are impractical. Short reach, and large mass. But indeed the dadao would be a better choice.

    • @horvathbenedek3596
      @horvathbenedek3596 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +mage7 That is because the rifle round with the larger energy cpuld actually transfer enough energy to crack the hard outer layers of the cleaver. Also, the relatively thick blade created different twisting stress on the planes of the blade's cross section; having twisting stress in a material is always worse than polling or bending, as it is completely ununiform, and it increase exponentially with the diameter (if I remember correctly). This is why you can't bend a very thick material without it deforming.

    • @garethlamb6923
      @garethlamb6923 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** It doesn't have the solid mass of the Reaver, the lighter blade is more prone to deflection.

    From what I read online, the Dadao was a weapon developed during the Sino-Japanese war (WWII period) by a Chinese martial arts expert for soldiers with very little kungfu or sword fighting skills. These troops are trained within a short period of time to face the Japanese bayonets and katanas on the field.

  • @MarcellusGrey
    @MarcellusGrey 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    This is not a fair test. When you cut the branches at different positions the amount of resistance changes. When you used the Reaver Cleaver at 4:30 and 5:35 you encountered less resistance which caused the branch to be pushed downward and "bounce" which resulted in shallower cuts.

    • @Skallagrim

    Hey Skall, I get that the reaver cleaver with its thicker blade and slightly wider grind would excel much more than the Dadao in cutting all that wood. But, I wonder which would slice more cleanly through fleshy or softer gel materials as well as the ZGB Ivans. Thoughts?

    My two cents here, Skall: the rubber grip on the reaver should make the cut less likely to glance compared to the wooden one since it makes for a better grip. I don't believe it is related to the blade shape, but maybe the weight makes a difference too (some of the later one-handed cuts with the reaver do look more tiresome). Great vid!

    Also what is the 12.963 second time stamp about at the end. I realise it is one of the time you needed to chop through the wood with one of the blades. Could it be a hint as to which Sword you prefer?

    Traditionally, the Dadao comes with a red scarf tied to the ring handle. It is meant to wipe blood off the blade.

    The Reaver Cleaver seemed to cut deeper per swing but it seemed heavier which would contribute to that. It also seemed like more work to swing.

  • @Shooter11B
    @Shooter11B 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    AWESOME REVIEW! I noticed (as did you) quite a few glancing blows with the Dadao and was wondering if it was due to 1. Technique, 2. blade edge geometry or 3. Handle geometry?

    • @Skallagrim
      @Skallagrim  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mostly the latter two.

    • @Shooter11B
      @Shooter11B 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** They seemed pretty evenly matched with the exception of the glancing blows. I am looking forward to seeing which one you prefer!

    • @MartialNico
      @MartialNico 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Since it's the same person in all instances, I would assume the effect of technique to be minimal (unless one of them naturally allows for better technique, but that would still be connected to the blade).

    • @Shooter11B
      @Shooter11B 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      MartialNico Right. I believe (and of course Skal can comment on this), that one of the blades is lighter, the Dadao, therefore quicker and easier to swing around and get back into the wood, which may have contributed to a different result, possibly a misalignment of the strike?

  • @Null_Vampyrr

    You should also compare the strength of the blades. For example by shooting at them with 7,62 X 49 rifle cartridge or something like that.

    • @adude9610
      @adude9610 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Emiel Regis Rohellec Terzieff-Godefroy and possibly throw in the garbage 490 dollars by breaking them, just like he did in the Reaver Cleaver Review wich he did a while ago, were he shoots the weapon with a sniper and a piece just flies off.
