I've recently picked up an interest in training with a meteor hammer/rope dart as an all body compound movement exercise and would love to hear your take on these Chinese soft weapons in actual combat.
Almost ordered one before they were discontinued but the weight was a deal breaker. It should weigh half what it does. Maybe if they used aluminum for all the fittings and scales it would have come in at a more appropriate weight.
When he mentioned that destruction happened 6 years ago, I had a moment of pause. That happened 6 years ago but it feels like it was a few months ago. And then I realized, I came here for knife reviews and stayed because I’ve loved the content since.
@Charm Ming you do realize that it is 3 time as heavy as a sword since it has metal shaft. It has probably 3-4 kg of weight that you need to carry on your back besides an AK, food, provisions and toilet paper.

This Weapon with the buckler looks like something a modern-day Gladiator would use. Some kind of post apocalyptic Gladiator who fights for fuel or something like that

@@thatguybrody4819 It's a reference to the Reaver Cleaver. Skallagrim had a zombie reaver cleaver that he shot with a 7.62x39 and blew it the #$^& up. That was a very thicc weapon.
The Zulu iklwa was used in tandem with a Zulu cattle-hide shield in similar fashion to the roman gladius and scutum. At first He's using it like a flemish zweihander. You can see how much more effective it becomes when he starts using it with a shield. His observation about the weight in using it in the more traditional fashion is correct. the iklwa is a weapon of speed and dexterity.
The Iklwa was invented by Shaka Zulu for especially this way of combat. It was designed to be thrust in the armpit of the opponent and to penetrate lungs and heart. The name comes from the sound it makes when pulling it out of the wound. Pretty hardcore weapon.

The Scutum blocked any head-on attack, while the Gladius was thrust into the exposed flank of the Enemy confronting the legionaire on your right. This tactic was a major reason for the success of both the Roman Legions, AND Shaka's troops.
It is not discontinued anymore...I ordered one this past late June, and it should be completed by sometime in August... I am very excited now... Great video!!!

Aren't their shields just made of rawhide and twine though? Not trying to insult the culture but their shields allways looked more symbolic to me than anything
@@gageriddle1681 According to some sources, the thing is somewhat reliable at deflecting blows and bashing people. Also good at confusion. After the introduction of guns though, yeah they're more symbolic.
@@Samuraiedge2 well, a blunt blow or a cut is very different than a thrust. In my experience of research, leather isnt the best defense again thrust attacks. Depends on the leather though
@@gageriddle1681 Considering they managed to conquer some of the biggest tribes nearby using that shield, they must be doing something right. No expert but just my opinion. It can also be argued that they focus more on parrying than actual blocking due to the big stick in the center. This is coming from watching what they use in training which was basically a buckler with a long stick down the middle.
@Chidi Akara I live in western nc, I got boxes, but backups are nice. Plenty of uses for both, I'd rather have a sword than a pistol, I also have a shotgun or rifle before either. But the backup is def a sword or long knife.

I just don't see how they justify that pricetag for a pointy block or steel wrapped in leather. @@ThatOneJalapenoKid a forge you can make for like $80 if you don't fuck it up, if you want a good anvil, you're probably looking at $300+ because everybody is trying to get one. A GOOD belt sander is $200+ if you want a consistent heat treat you'll need a bigger forge but preferably a heat treat oven, plus propane and steel to practice and with the amount of time and materials all this takes you it's cheaper to buy the sword. Unless you'll settle for lower quality which is entirely reasonable because you don't really need that level of quality.
Sadly nearly everything on this channel is illegal in my country. Luckily I can still enjoy these great weapon designs through your channel. Very grateful, thanks Skallagrim.

Finally the spear sword is getting some attention. Very versatile. I agree that the blade should be heavier than the handle but I also prefer a shorter blade for better use in tight spaces. I think the only downside is that it has less carry options than traditional swords.
Quick thing, Skall: none of ZT’s blades use steel handle scales (thank goodness, how much would that weigh?) They’re aluminum. All of them are 6061-T6 aluminum, which is about as strong as that material gets. For a second I thought you misspoke, but you said it twice in the video.

I was sad when I found this video only to learn it was gone from the market. Now I'm sad that I spent 500 bucks I could probably have used for something more reasonable, and I'm sad I gotta wait a few months to see the thing. However, this is all merely banking against the future happiness I'm sure will arrive with the package.

ZT seems pretty highly rated and it's not hard to see how some of them could be very useful even outside of wacky doomsday scenarios. Just a heads up, if you don't already own guns and you live somewhere you can have them, they're gateway drugs too. Buy one and suddenly you'll find all kinds of very legitimate reasons why you need this one and this one and this one... And of course there's the accessories that can end up costing more than the firearm before you're done.

Oh. Thats what it looked like. This changes a lot. Still even if its an apocalypse tool it could be made of micarta or wood - maybe an oak diped in worn out, black engine oil. It could be resin reinforged. Im a big guy but I dont like heavy stuff at all. If I would like to take it out into wild -1,84kg would be waay too much. Machete is a lot with only 500-700g.

That's a cool ass weapon. Ever since Dark Souls 3, i've been in love with Spear swords or swordspears. just the general design of it all seems really awesome.
One thing to note about the sheath, it really looks like the sheath was designed to be attached to a small vehicle (moped, motorcycle) or backpack as the holes make it really easy to secure to them, while using the weight of the object to provide the resistance to make drawing the weapon easier.
Fucking love this idea. Imagine getting with with a motorcycle drive-by from this thing. Must be why the bottom of the haft is flared, To make sure you don't lose your grip.
Finally got mine today after waiting almost 5 months, i love it so much already lol. Its very heavy and the sheath doesn't fit appropriately at all but swinging it around for a few minutes still felt great.
It's honestly one of the most overlooked weapons in history. A well made traditional one with a full tang not as heavy as this would be very interesting indeed.
I think it to be elegant in the sense that all the movements you can make with this thing are strong and sturdy. Good for lopping off bits! Also that little curve at the bottom of the blade makes me go "mmmmmmm"

7.62×39 is only commonly in use by third world armies at this point, and it is laughable in terms of actual energy delivered to target, especially comapared to more common hunting cartriges like .308 Remington or 7.62×54r
This would be one hell of a Elven Fantasy War Sword, it's so sad how underrated African weapons are consider they pop up everywhere in so many fantasy designs. Edit: Wow, i just wrote this comment about 12 mins ago.
theyre used in fantasy because they look unusual. they look unusual because we're not taught about weapons from africa, its mostly katanas, chinese bending swords and european stuff, sometimes persian or greek stuff too.

I do drills with both my Spits, I have the old version too! The thing I love about the smaller version is torque, it’s very powerful and nimble. The favourite of all my swords ⚔️
I might add, the upward stroke of the Spit is menacing. You can literally pick heavy things up into the air, something you cant do with your average sword.. The long Haft generates alot of power!

a hypothetical I was thinking about recently: Let's say you're a weapons/armor manufacturer in the middle ages and you had access to one modern materials technology (and sufficient supplies to keep it viable) whioch would you choose and why? A:) Modern Metals: Titanium, aluminium etc. B:) Various plastics: Nylon, Lexan, whatever they make hockey pads out of, etc. or C:) Carbon Fiber. Just a fun exercise to think about
Good fucking steel. Titanium is a nightmare when it comes to forging it: it's fragile thus can be bent in very thin temperature window. And weight loss would not be worth it. What i would defenately want is modern zips, fastexes, that kind of stuff
Steel. Many other materials have short term advantages but you can't resharpen carbon fiber and good luck with titanium. Tungsten alloys might make a good war hammer but your shoulder will be gone after 1 swing. Good alloys of steel and a good education for my smiths would matter much more than and fancy materials.
While some people would call this "mall ninja sh*t," I absolutely love the design. Idk why, but I've always loved long handled swords, like the nagamaki, and the example you provided at the beginning.
Hey Skallagrim, I'm a writer and I'm currently working on a zombie apocalypse story(fittingly enough for the video) and I was wondering if I could mention your channel by name.
Considering that it would drive subscriptions, I doubt he'd have a problem, and even if he did, I don't think there's anything that he could do about it.
It's published intellectual property, so it technically falls under copyright protection if he really wanted to pursue action. Whether or not he would even care or be able to do anything about it is irrelevant, I would want his permission regardless. Detrimental or beneficial, I would want someone to ask me before using or mentioning my material, if for no other reason than to be polite.
I’m gonna be honest, that is probably one of the most practical melee zombie weapons. I really like my demolition/pry bar though as it can be used to enter locked places, build fortifications or other structures and will definitely destroy a zombie brain

I have said for years a shorter sword blade on a very long shaft would be amazing. Most of the benefits of a spear and sword. I wonder why this wasn't done more often.
You know the Zulu shortened a spear to use as an intermediate weapon that was comparable to a sword. They carried this along with a long spear and a shield. The men were already trained with spear and shield and the short spear added little to their combat load. The Zulu armed in this way were responsible for the defeat of two “modern” armies during the Zulu wars. The short spear did not evolve it was invented to fill the space normally filled by British sword (a diminishing role as a combat weapon at the time for sure)

Finally the spear sword is getting some attention. Very versatile. I agree that the blade should be heavier than the handle but I also prefer a shorter blade for better use in tight spaces. I think the only downside is that it has less carry options than traditional swords.
Quick thing, Skall: none of ZT’s blades use steel handle scales (thank goodness, how much would that weigh?)
They’re aluminum. All of them are 6061-T6 aluminum, which is about as strong as that material gets.

ZT seems pretty highly rated and it's not hard to see how some of them could be very useful even outside of wacky doomsday scenarios. Just a heads up, if you don't already own guns and you live somewhere you can have them, they're gateway drugs too. Buy one and suddenly you'll find all kinds of very legitimate reasons why you need this one and this one and this one... And of course there's the accessories that can end up costing more than the firearm before you're done.

Im a big guy but I dont like heavy stuff at all. If I would like to take it out into wild -1,84kg would be waay too much. Machete is a lot with only 500-700g.

One thing to note about the sheath, it really looks like the sheath was designed to be attached to a small vehicle (moped, motorcycle) or backpack as the holes make it really easy to secure to them, while using the weight of the object to provide the resistance to make drawing the weapon easier.
Fucking love this idea. Imagine getting with with a motorcycle drive-by from this thing.

It makes me think of the elvish swords they had at Helm's Deep in Peter Jackson's movies.
Those were based off of the Nagamaki. As they are large two-handed single edged swords. But it does bear a lot of similarities in ideas.

they look unusual because we're not taught about weapons from africa, its mostly katanas, chinese bending swords and european stuff, sometimes persian or greek stuff too.
The Reaper III looks like a High elven sword, but this Spit sword looks more like a dwarf longsword to me.

I do drills with both my Spits, I have the old version too! The thing I love about the smaller version is torque, it’s very powerful and nimble. The favourite of all my swords ⚔️
I might add, the upward stroke of the Spit is menacing. You can literally pick heavy things up into the air, something you cant do with your average sword.. The long Haft generates alot of power!

a hypothetical I was thinking about recently: Let's say you're a weapons/armor manufacturer in the middle ages and you had access to one modern materials technology (and sufficient supplies to keep it viable) whioch would you choose and why? A:) Modern Metals: Titanium, aluminium etc. B:) Various plastics: Nylon, Lexan, whatever they make hockey pads out of, etc. or C:) Carbon Fiber. Just a fun exercise to think about
Good fucking steel. Titanium is a nightmare when it comes to forging it: it's fragile thus can be bent in very thin temperature window. And weight loss would not be worth it. What i would defenately want is modern zips, fastexes, that kind of stuff

Steel. Many other materials have short term advantages but you can't resharpen carbon fiber and good luck with titanium. Tungsten alloys might make a good war hammer but your shoulder will be gone after 1 swing. Good alloys of steel and a good education for my smiths would matter much more than and fancy materials.

I’m gonna be honest, that is probably one of the most practical melee zombie weapons. I really like my demolition/pry bar though as it can be used to enter locked places, build fortifications or other structures and will definitely destroy a zombie brain

I have said for years a shorter sword blade on a very long shaft would be amazing. Most of the benefits of a spear and sword. I wonder why this wasn't done more often.
You know the Zulu shortened a spear to use as an intermediate weapon that was comparable to a sword.
They carried this along with a long spear and a shield. The men were already trained with spear and shield and the short spear added little to their combat load.
The Zulu armed in this way were responsible for the defeat of two “modern” armies during the Zulu wars.
The short spear did not evolve it was invented to fill the space normally filled by British sword (a diminishing role as a combat weapon at the time for sure)
