    It's insane how good the Condor dadao is when you realize it can even compete with the Reaver Clever in performance

    I bought the Dadao which came to about $210 Australian including shipping. Still love it. Having a bit of a hard time keeping it sharp as this is my first blade and I dont have any proper sharpening tools yet.
    Still I can speak for the Dadao, I love it

    I really enjoyed this. Seeing the comparison between the two removed one of the big worries I had with my dadao namely that if i just waited a bit longer I could have gotten the reaver clever instead. I hope you do more of these chop offs in the future.

    As a collector of Condor knives the first thing I do when I get one, is have it resharpened, to get rid of the "appleseed" edge. Also with the wood scale handles it is easy to shape them to your grip fit, also wrapping them with Hockey stick or Tennis Racket handle tape provides a much better grip. I suppose you could do the handle wrap with leather also.

  • @chabis
    @chabis 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    With some time and creativity some "flaws" of the Dadao like the edge geometry and the balance could probably be fixed. Nice.

    • @Landogarner83
      @Landogarner83 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Changing the balance would take a lot of time if you want to do it properly. However the edge geometry or the shape of the handle would mainly take some patience to redo.

    • @StudentOfWarCustoms
      @StudentOfWarCustoms 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      One thing I was thinking that would probably help would be grind some steel off the spine near the tip to reduce the flair and basically make it a seax type point which would also give it a better ability to stab plus change the edge angle and I bet it’d be an awesome sword that would still be able to cut well. The handle shape could be changed pretty easily then wrapped in some leather or something as well.

    I've found very similar "complaints" on the condors I own as well. Most need the edge re-angled(?) and the handles are pretty basic. That being said, for their price they make for a great modification platform. I'm cheap and don't mind putting in the extra work but I can see where others may be turned off. But man, some day I'll own something for Zombie Tools for sure!

  • @anderwmarcell9503

    The reaver cleaver is an evolved Dadao. The Reaver Cleaver has a much better handle and is probably of much better steel. The Dadao is a "weapon of the masses". Historically they were made quickly of questionable steels, with simple leather or cloth sheaths. There is a school of fighting that was codified before the Second World War to train the most number of recruits to effectively use the Dadao. While they may not have been as skilled or graceful as the Japanese with their military issue,poorly balanced Katana, the Chinese did indeed fight well with their jumble of mixed firearms and their Dadao. Chinese armed with Broomhandles and Dadao swords made the first defeat of Japanese forces in and around a bridge in a daring night attack. I agree the Reaver Cleaver looks nice but I will take the Dadao and try to make a scabbard for it.

    • @Riceball01
      @Riceball01 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe that the Condor Dadao comes with a sheath, the only thing is that the sheath doesn't have a belt loop on it, so you'd to either rig one of your own or wear it on a medieval or Ren styl sword hanger or in a baldric.

    so, for those of us on a budget--if we're willing to spend some time on the Condor dadao with a Lansky kit re-profiling the edge, that may help the dadao perform a bit better, yes?
    I'm wondering how feasible it would be to drill the rivets holding the handles, rework the handle with sandpaper to get the right shape, and then reattach them with something like the hex nuts on my ESEE-4or screw/sleeve nuts...thoughts?

      @Riceball01 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That's what I was thinking. Sand down the edges and the flat part, then wrap it with something like leather to help give it a better grip. You could probably add some thin cord to handle before wrapping to help give it an even better grip too.

    If it's more durable and takes longer to grind an edge that makes me think it's made of harder steel. It probably holds an edge longer as well I'm willing to bet.

    the dadao has a convex grind vs the reaver cleaver which has a high saber grind.

    Any cheaper alternatives? :D I mean, the Dadao is a lot cheaper, so - is there a good weapon with the price in between?

    The zombie one looks so much like the heavy elvish sword from LotR that its giving me nostalgia. Jesus christ were the movies good. The scene where a row of elvish soldier slash in a wave fashion at the enemie comes to mind as a bad ass scene.

    all hail Zombie tools !!! they are my favorite sword/knifes makers. I would choose any of their blades over almost any other comp. just for pure durability ,Aesthetics , utilitarian design, in the bang for your buck there price point for what you get is out of this world !! they hit on all categories I'm trying to save up for some of their larger bladesI'm not sure which one I'm going to get yet but it doesn't matter they are all extremely bad ass

    Dadao has a lot of different kinds, some of them do have longer handle and feel more balanced.

  • @LGunit
    @LGunit 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Skallagrim, you mentioned that you would need a lot more grinding for the Dadao to match the sharpness of the Reaver Cleaver; would you say that upon doing so the durability advantage that the shape of the Dadao edge has will be negated at that point?
    (note: what I got from your explanation is that the shape was made for durability, though I'm not sure whether I am now falsely assuming that you meant that the Dadao is more durable(though both look pretty sturdy) than the Reaver Cleaver, so if that's wrong please correct me! :D )

    • @Skallagrim
      @Skallagrim  7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I didn't notice any difference after the tests, but in theory the thicker edge of the Dadao should be more durable. The edge of the Reaver Cleaver is quite sturdy too though, so I prefer to have the extra sharpness.

    • @LGunit
      @LGunit 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ah yes that makes sense, thank you for your quick reply!
      I guess for me personally I would go for the extra sharpness as well in that case
