This design is inspired by the Zulu Iklwa short spear, and it can also be used somewhat like a longsword. Thrusts with the Spit are seriously powerful, and it cuts pretty well too.
The realistic skull analog inside clear synthetic ballistic gel is made by Zombie Go Boom.

I think zombie themed weapons are silly but I actually love the design of this one and looks like it’ll give a nasty slice. Also I like the long grip

They make very good blades. Even if theme is cheesy, they are monstrously good. If you have not seen it, look up Skall's videos with the Reaver Cleaver.

I generally agree, but ZT is actually pretty tasteful in terms actual design, no neon green or completely out there blade shapes.

I would actually like to see him using a rakuyo-insoired saber.
Church pick is legit one of the best BB weapons, I just wish the design was different, different shaft, different blade, same overall design/mechanism.
The shaft is just too rectangular and the "blade" is completely dull (a lot more like a spike than a blade, really) up until the tip where you could probably get some amount of tip cut potential but overall it's pretty eh in terms of aesthetics.

I agree on the shaft. Not exactly the pinnacle of ergonomics, is it? But it is a pick first and shortsword second (Church “Pick,” after all). If the idea was a gouging weapon with cutting potential, I think it was done well - maybe make the blade just a smidge skinnier.
If you really want to talk about conflict between form and function, Ludwig’s Holy Blade seems entirely too fat for a cutting weapon. I like to justify it by telling myself it does such great damage because it’s also breaking bones, but it still feels grossly inelegant. I could mention a few other “cutting” weapons with too-fat blades, but we all know which ones are guilty. Compared to them, the Pick doesn’t really stand out much.

From all the footage I've seen, I don't believe ZT makes a less-than-stellar product. Every video of test cutting footage I've seen, the blade goes through just about anything. I love it!

Zombie Tools seems to make the most amazing products. The Spit, which you did at least one other show on, may be rhe most amazing of them all. A combination of a sword and a short pole arm with origins in the Zulu iklwa(?). Fearsome!

That joke was a bit premature, but that sword is coming soon. I heard that it has a very wide, hard blade on a VERY long handle, making it perfect for thrusting into zombies. The poles also seem stiff enough to erect small temporary shelters with so that you don’t get screwed by the weather.
Now that’s the way you use in-ur-end-ohhh.

This video is genuinely terrifying. It seems so effortless to inflict horrific wounds with this weapon.
Makes me wanna run around in full plate armor all the time, just to avoid this. Then I remember that pretty much no one carries these kinds of things in public, so we're probably fine.
You must take into account that skall is atleast semi trained, the average joe wouldn’t be quite as deadly

No, this is much easier. Hitting someone with this thing is a lot less difficult and would do a lot more damage. You just need to be closer.
There's a reason mass shootings are _mass_ shootings. It takes a lot of skill to be able to actually hit a specific target. It's hard to miss when your target is "anything."

From what i understand, it is intentionally inspired by the assegai that Shaka Zulu favored.
That was my thought as well. Only on steroids.
It does prove that Shaka was way ahead of everyone else back then as a military strategist. I was watching a documentary on him, which is why I brought him up, even knowing it's what this was inspired by. This proves how brutal Shaka's warriors were.
Paula Assis ~ I've read of him myself. Very interesting character. What I find interesting is that he was using tactics similar to what the Romans used (only more mobile because he had light infantry.
He was a great tactician and inspired great loyalty.
I doubt iklwas are anything like this weapon in practice. They were made for thrusting in shield carrying formation, so they were smaller than this and narrower. It's a mistake to look at something so modified like this and think that it "proves" anything.

Fun fact: it was apparently named after the sound it makes when used.

TheSchmeister, I don't actually know if this is correct. I have seen the TV show as a child but remembered him demonstrating how weak the usual lance was and how easily it broke. Then he came up with this mix of sword and lance, from there everything is history.

It's new. The ballistic gel that it's covered in is very different from what they use for the Ivan heads. Much tougher.
I personally think that this head looks scarier, it's really nice.

Yeah, unfortunately these days TH-cam focuses a lot on the "recommended" category. And the fewer videos of a particular channel the watch the less often you'll see them long-term. However, they should still pop up in your direct subscription feed.

Looks like it could be used for about everything. In quite confined spaces and in the open field, cutting, stabbing, felling trees, building ships, looking badass.

This design has been a part of my fantasies as my ideal weapon, but I never saw it in reality or really knew about it. It is great to see one have a great showing.
That cut around 5:30 actually looked like it didnt do any damage, and then in the slow motion you see how it chopps right through the face but everything snapps back into place. Amazing :D

Holy Molly Skal, that is something else. I got a Cold Steel Iklwa, well hafted on a nice bit of ash, I took the edge back a bit to see how well it would cut, nothing like this Mamma Jamma. The price is a bit steep for me as I only occasionally have a cut fest with my big sons in the garden when their mothers out. Bastard Tinker Peirce, my favorite and a few other big sharp pokey things picked up over the years. Been watching you since you worked in the shop, thought you were a bit weird, I should talk.A good demonstration and thanks for all your good content.

He knew what he was doing when the mighty Chaka designed that blade. Idea for future testing... 1.) Throw it like a spear 2.) Executioner demonstration (head along the horizontal plane) 3.) Achilles plunge (through the neck at distal clavicle, penetrating the heart and lung.

HeY SKALL, love your work. Been really wanting a video that focuses on hitting a Zombies weak spots (ie through the orbital or nasal cavity, ect) to aid in weapon recovery rather than trying to brute force your way into the skull.
I've always thought in a real Zombie survival situation getting your primary weapon stuck in a skull seems to be one of the surefire way to get offed. This sword/spear however, might just change my mind on brute force methods.
After seeing the test with the blunt weapons, I am both in awe and terrified of that thing.
I love the design of the extended handle, like we've seen that makes it very good at thrusting when you hold your grip further up the handle. Same effect as half-swording, but safer.
Heathen safer? If you halfsword correctly there is absolutely no risk regarding hands

that spear/sword hybrid is really interesting. Ide be curious to see what thoughts you have on how practical it would have been as a weapon. The disign seems devastating in combat, but it may be inconvenient to carry as a soldier.

Well, that sword-spear hybrid was brutal! I love the simplicity of the design too, very practical and durable.
I do wonder though, with the added weight of the heavy blade and high stiffness, how effective would that blade be in an actual medieval conflict, both to manufacture and use. What sort of modifications might make it better for general use by soldiers?
Yes, I am aware that Japan, China and other Asian countries have a lot of bladed-spears that are at least somewhat similar to this one.
