So I've put this badass sword through its paces, including some harsh abusive testing which it has taken like a champ. I already knew that ZT blades are built like tanks, but I was still surprised at how little damage it took from some of those tests.
Cutting, chopping, bashing, stabbing, breaking... I've sure had my fun with this. :)
The actual review will be uploaded not long after this video, probably 1-3 days later. The first impression is pretty awesome.

If you've ever been chopping wood with a hatchet and thinking "I'd rather have a sword to do this" this sword is for you!
Bacae Strife surprisingly I have
Well im not alone in this dilemma
Zombie tools knives are very effective when it comes to cutting, slicing, and wood chopping. You can see that is very apparent in this video.
There is also a company that makes Viking wood splitter swords that are quite effective in splitting thick pieces of tree wood, and I'm talking tree stump thickness. There's a wood chopping Lumberjack TH-camr girl on here who uses one from time to time, and she makes short work of the logs that she splits with that Viking sword. It's just as effective if not more than any axe.
That pommel finishing was impresive.
But it wasn't *rightly*
biodtox it was so slightly
You sacrificing the blade product for the viewers is one of the noblest things i have ever seen.
Mr. Allmighty Cornholio
The sword is still fine, the edge damage is no big deal. No sacrifice there.
***** Can you show us what it looks like after you fix it? And describe how you fixed it? Do you just slowly resharpen it to an edge manually on a whetstone the broken parts or do you just use like a belt sander or what?
*****
If you find the time, please make a show and tell on how to properly fix that type of edge damage, your way.
I thinkkkkkkk he has mentioned that he will be doing a sharpening and edge fixing video some time.. but he hasn't yet had quite enough experience to show and teach it properlyyy how he does it.. or something along these lines.. I think he said it in his how to wash blades or clean swords or whatever video not long ago.
***** Yes, if you're going to fix it yourself I would also really like to see a video of it before you start fixing it and the end result since you've been promising us a sharpening video for a while now. Stop being shy about it. We really want to see you do it.
That's how to test a sword, not on a water melon^^
+Sany Suny lol, it reminded me of something
+Sany Suny That's how to test a sword, the watermelon thing is just for show.
Sany Suny He was hungry.
Sure, if you want to do durability/destructive testing.
Compact newspaper rolls and metal objects are tougher
I knew it! The sword *WAS* just a limiter to the pommel!
i know that the Zombietools people don't fuck around but jesus fucking christ, if i ever need a sword i know what to get
yea that sword is so over powered. .. 10/10
It's can bend metal, it can chop wood, it can smash a knife. What else do you need?
ov... overpowered? are you serious? this isn't skyrim, this is a little thing called real life.
Kauli
it can be used irl
Kauli I think he means op like, its so freaking hard that it could even break knifes.
careful skall otherwise zombie tools might put a no knife symbol on the sword XD
lol
That looks very stress relieving, no wonder Mr Skallagrim is a chill dude.
Dude Skals old videos are the youtube equivalent of warm Mac n Cheese for me. TH-cam comfort food.
Pays 600 dollars for a sword and tries to break it. that's so metal.
And doesn't break
Break it? It's not a plastic sword lol
600 bucks is very cheap for a sword of that quality.
didn't they gave them as a review gift? I know he got two reaver cleavers for free, but what about the diphos?
edgartheslayer3 yeah it was gifted
@7:14 "the more rigid a blade is, the more..." at that pause, I was hoping for "thrustworthy". Get it? Get it? :)
SadBunny best comment ive seen in ages.
Well, thanks :)
@X Infinity > and ruin the best joke of my life? No thanks :D
It's a trash compactor, an axe, a knife breaker and sword all in one! I wonder what else it can do
John Wesley Stick it in a cannon and make it a projectile =D
+DarkRaife Or fire it from a longbow? Lol
+DarknessXER *Dragonslayer Greatbow
I wish you'd do a video on repairing this kind of edge damage.
That said, that seems like the most idiot proof sword I've ever seen.
God damn that sword bending was scary. Anyway, has anyone ever "walked in" while you were in the forest filming, Skall? Someone going at bottles and objects is sure to attract attention from more than just civilians.
Draven Cage
No, the spot I've picked is not where people are normally walking.
I'd hope that the police would have better things to do than go about annoying people that aren't doing anything wrong. It's not even like he's shooting a firearm or cutting up human targets.
GetTheFO I'd hope that they have better things to do that being in the middle of the fucking woods XD
ForeskinMan lol, that too
***** NSA here. Any bodies or hidden in that site?
Man I can't stop rewatching this from time to time. I think it's the fourth time since spring this year. Even more with the reaver cleaver! Incredible!
A mighty impressive blade. I am looking forward to your full review!
So that's how you make a serrated knife? ;)
All knifes are serrated
+Joshua Bird Except for all the knives that aren't.
+bill withers link me a pic of a knive that is not serrated.
+Joshua Bird images.knifecenter.com/thumb/1500x1500/knifecenter/down-under-knives/images/DUKCDg.jpg
+Joshua Bird Took about 16 seconds to find that picture.
The sheer amount of protective gear you're wearing really drives home which activities someone shouldn't normally do to their sword. :)
Gotta say, I love your reviews and tests. Your camera work is gotten better. :D
Fantastic review! Thorough, realistic and all around fun to watch.
WOW. Despite the gimmicky veneer these ZT guys really know their shit.
When they promise durability above all else they fucking deliver.
IT SNAPPED THAT THING IN HALF. I don't care if it was a shitty knife, that's still impressive. It even snapped it along a completely new fault to the two notches it had formed.
noob question, how do you repair edge damage? just by sharpening?
+bladewolf VII
Basically yes. If it's severe edge damage the blade will have to be re-profiled by grinding away the damaged section and then tapering the blade towards the reduced width.
+Skallagrim thx for the answer ;)
+Skallagrim Well , can you do it in home ? and with what materials do you sharpen it?
+bladewolf VII for a sword with those astheticks (zombie apocalypse and all) you might not want to repair that damage. He even says it himself, I certainly wouldn't repair it unless it's severe damage like a severe amount of chipping.
Skallagrim I'm pretty new to the channel so forgive me if you already have, but do you think that you could make a video on how to repair various damaging to weapons with things you'd have at home or a hardware store?
Thank you skall been waiting for this review since you unboxed the Diphos
This is one of your best testing videos. I know you'll get a lot of subscribers if you keep this work. Really great sword, I was waiting for the test since I saw the unboxing!
man... what a sword.... Best sword you ever covered
you cant throw the pommel. Bad sword
ahahahaha
underrated comment
nikimaster115 throw the sword pummel first.
End him rightly!
No need when you can split mountains by hitting them with the pommel while it's still attached. :\
Was waiting for this test and was not disappointed, that really is a great sword and held up as well as I expected it would.
Really good video, happy to see the blade survived the stress test. It is one damn fine looking blade.
Awesome blade, my only wish is that they made a more historically inspired cross guard. Beyond that, its pretty damn awesome
I believe it was inspired by a greek design- a design for sword and shield combat. This is basically based on having seen some historical greek blades, which had fuck all in the way of guards.
Devils Advocate The length of the weapon wouldnt make it ideal for that, though the shape may have been designed from a greek xiphos
***** hey, I'm 6 foot 7. The length of the weapon suits me fine :)
Devils Advocate Psh lucky you, that must be a short sword in your hands then
Devils Advocate its always a nice feeling when you can weild a longsword in one hand as if its an arming sword ahahahah im 6 foot 3 and a 20 inch blade seems short to me :D my preferred blade length is round about 38 to 45 inches
i have wielded a 6 foot 5 claymor and it was amazing :D
It would be awesome if you invested in one of those high speed cameras so you could get really good slow motion shots of things being sliced in half :D
TabascoZach1
I know, but they cost several thousand dollars.
*****
Just find someone who has one and be like "Hey want to cut things with swords?" could work lol
xbubbahotep *****
Ask Destin from SmarterEveryDay & FunnerEveryDay. Usually he films more sciency things, but he has a firearms tick and I would believe filming sparks flying off from hitting two blades together is something he might like.
ruolbu That would be quite the contrast in people!
*****'s snark, slightly menacing first impression, and awesome accent from somwhere northeast of the Maginot line and the Adriatic sea (Czech Republic?) VS Destin's Gentle folksy demeanor and equaly awesome accent from good ol' Alabama USA.
I gotta say the Diphos from ZT is just an incredibly beautiful sword. All their products are very amazing looking, but I absolutely love this one above the rest! Thanks for making a video about it!
I love all of your videos . This was a true test and this one has sold me on that sword. I have to have one now .
Kids in Africa could've eaten that wood
They can eat my wood
GOT EEEEMMMM
+Jothunheim No it isn't because I'm under 18 as well.
+Psychosmurf43 I can tell...
Yea I could of
+African Child HAHAHAHA!!!!! HOLY SMOKES , I can't believe you made that profile ,😂
You are making it hard not to want to buy one of their swords... though given that I am poor would take a long long time to have the money for one. Still bits of me cringed with the damage to the blade but more in love with their work now.
Well done, tell Zombie Tools that you just got a buyer, just about to put an order in, this is all I like about a blade, and you presented it perfectly :)
Wow awesome video. I have not seen you put a blade through that much stress before. Very cool.
Fantastic video. How would you repair such an edge damage like the one you got from hitting the knife? I'm quite interested to know how you could do it at home. Thanks :)
To be fair.. The knife was stainless steel, which is known to be weaker than actual tempered steel.
+Epic Fail
It depends on the steel. You're probably thinking of 420, but there are plenty of quality steels used for high end knives.
***** I was under the impression that all stainless steel was more brittle and weaker than normal steel. ?-?
+Epic Fail
It's harder and yes, thereby more brittle. That's what makes it unsuitable for swords. But high grade stainless steels like S30V for instance perform extremely well for shorter blades.
***** I suppose that it would make sense. Shorter blades needing to bend less.. On a sidenote do you happen to know anywhere I could get a good mace or morning star?
Also why so little on morning stars, they're one of my favorites. :)
+Epic Fail I don't know if that can help, but Skall did a video about a 85$ italian mace that he liked. You might want to check that out.
Holy shit. After the Reaver Cleaver i expected this one to be nice work. But damn, that thing is off the charts. Pretty nice sword and nice review/test/whatever too. Good job!
Hot damn, I was looking into the Diphos, and the spectacular results of this test makes me want the thing even more.
Also, haven't really commented before, but thanks for all the uploads mate, you're definitely one of several great information sources for me as a collector looking to get into more quality pieces.
SKALLAGRIM im a big fan of hand protectiom and gloves...could you tell me more about the gloves youre wearing and also thankyou for youre vids in which you do real testing
Anthony Wingert
th-cam.com/video/lqeN2KGV4HQ/w-d-xo.html
Defintely a nice sword, it really doesnt need much effort, would you reccomend it for all kinds of outdoor and camping stuff aswell?
Hey i have been really enjoy your stress test these swords :D keep up the great vids!
Great demonstration of the swords strenghth and cutting power....Mikey likes it!
This is serious abuse testing if I've ever seen one. Also, the shape and construction of this sword really speaks to me... Too bad my wallet is a desert... :(
Is there a no bullets logo on that sword too?
Skallagrim has the best job in the world, testing blades to destruction. Can't wait for the full review.
I will not lie, I am extremely envious of this man's chosen profession; yet, I'm just as gleeful to see someone do what they enjoy all the more. More power to you good sir.
If you can't do that with a sword, it's not much of a sword, is it?
This is how a sword testing should look.
Run gilly run
I actually disagree. It depends on the type. A replica of a historical sidesword or rapier should not be abused because it's made for cutting and penetrating flesh and bone, not hack into wood and metal. Of course blade on blade contact cannot be avoided in fencing, but it's a very different intensity, as you're not supposed to do static blocks. In a sword fight the blade is deflected and redirected, which takes most of the force out of the blow.
***** I absolutely agree with Skall here. There are lots of types of weapon which simply do not need to be able to sustain this level of abuse, and in fact to make them capable of doing so would in some cases make them worse weapons for the job they are intended for. Extreme example being a smallsword. Anybody could snap a smallsword with both hands and a foot (true of many types of sword actually), but the lightness of the smallsword is a virtue when it comes to fighting against someone else with a smallsword. Swords are not wood chopping tools, they are for fighting with and people are not trees.
***** hey brother is this a Greek style blade? I'm just guessing but a ziphos would be a one handed blade, an this is called a diphos because it is two handed? just curious, any feed back is much appreciated.
***** it seems mostly inspired by greek, roman and celtic styles
***** Yes this is a larger xephos actually. In fact they have a more historically accurate Greek short sword in their website that has the same shape as this one but its shorter and made for one hand use
poor edge Q.Q
epic sword, how can it still be straight?? just perfect
Finally the Diphos gets its chance to shine!!! I'm guessing this isn't the review video since you didn't really draw any conclusions about the blade but I want one even more now. Just waiting on Chris from ZT to bloody email me back so I can get my order placed. Love the video! Can't wait to see your final synopsis.
What an awesome blade. The quality, design, finish.
Hitting that knife edge on though... Made me wince every time.
Ok, it will be my first real sword. This one or se captain' saber. But I'd want to see what this one is able first x)
"d'Capitan". hint: pronounced like decapitate. =)
'how to get a head at the end of days'
Oh, I didn't see the hint, I'm french so I can't always see the kind of hint.
it's not written anywhere on their site. it's just a play on words. it is a nice sword though. my favorite is the rat bastard
Oh yeah, it seems really... brutal ^^
Kalaam Soulstealer I'm french and I got it :) especially since we have the same base word for decapitation...
***** You went very aggressive on this test, this is not always the case. What makes you do so? Is your thrust in the blade, your detachment from the value since you got it for free (!? not even sure what I'm saing here), the provider asked you to do so or anything else?
Independent from the answer I'd like to point that this kind of test is AMAZING. Very entertaining and educative. I'm just curious about your motive and if this is going to be the default method some day.
Cesar Scur
It's simply that I know how tough the steel is that they make their blades from, and it's obvious that they are assembled in a very secure way. Since I know that they can take one hell of a beating, why not show you guys?
not with his 'fuck you I'm expensive' blade, that hasn't had anything in the way of abusive testing.
*****
Nice!
Then I hope you get more tanky blades \o/
Devils Advocate
I should also mention that it's about the type of blade as well. Zombie Tools swords are not like historical swords, they are thicker, heavier and more brutal, without the finesse and agility of something like the Caithness. I would not do abusive testing with a rapier either, that would be pointless. A post-apocalyptic tank sword is a different matter. :)
***** "Rapier..." "...Pointless" There's a pun here, I know it.
Once again, very nice.Love the ZT blades.
I don't know a whole lot about swords and blades or really any kind of technique but I love learning from watching your channel.
It's also nice about how you've said things about the meat industry and your big on nature and you don't try to be all "IM A MANLY MAN LOOK AT SWORD" I love watching your videos. Thank you, keep doing what your doing buddy
Just a question:
On the Kult of Athena website how much would you say I would need to spend to get a fully functional spear? I remember you saying that a sword under $600 won't be that good but what price would you say for spears?
GrrrIamMad
Functional spears can be had for as little as a $150. Check out the ones made my Arms & Armor.
***** Thanks!
Also, what would you say would be a starting price for a functional one-handed axe?
GrrrIamMad
I'd say about $70.
6236003 I am not exactly the most handy of people... I wouldn't even know how to start making a spear.
GrrrIamMad Spearheads cost less, if you buy the stick and head separately you might save a couple bucks.
It hurts me watching a sword get hurt
My crew
It's not hurt, just used. "Battle damage" adds to the character. :)
***** Especially in the case of a ZT weapon. A bit of scarring does wonders for them.
My crew
It's barely even hurt. That ol' girl toughed those hits like a fuckin' tank. Gotta love ZombieTools!
Nothing a little sharpening cant take out.. which the depth of what i wouldn't call damage wouldn't change the profile of the edge. Its some SOLID steel.
Ooh, I've been waiting for this with barely tempered excitement!
What a beast of a blade and it appears so indestructable. That looks like great fun. I have to have one.
I ordered the xiphos I hope it's just as good
uxserdvghbjl
It's pretty much the same thing, just shorter.
Awesome playboy
This demo has inspired me to buy a sword.
Thanks you, Skall!
Damn bro that was awesome. had me on the edge of my seat for the knife destruction. The sword preformed great, makes me want the d'Capitain hat much more!
This is a real service. You test yours, now I do not have to do that to mine. My initial reaction when I first held it was that the two handed pommel probably was unnecessary. However after handling for a while you definitely see it's useful, even needed.
A sword testing brought to you by Michael Bay - with sparkles and shit.
you just beat the shit out of a $600 sword...
Well hey at least you know if you ever got it it would hold up to almost anything
how the shock to the hand didn't see if it was one piece of metal or it has a hilt cause it looks like a good blade crafted well love how TH-cam is bringing this very proud and awesome community together. Claim Victous
I really love your videos you have learned me a lot of things on swords and other blade type weapons so keep your work up en continue making videos greets from belgium :)
you should try out zombie tools apokatana i think its awsome
How would a e-carbon monoblade work? As in a blade whose edge is only one atom thick.
do u know how could it be resharpened? since it sounds great in theory
TheErtagon15
You propably wouldn't need to, graphene is basically thousands of times stronger than steel.
op4000exe interesting, well then it would be the best material ever since the tinner the edge the easier it is to cut
op4000exe Depends what you mean by strength, it's a very flexible material
jwarrior343
True, but damaging it, and bending it out of shape (permanently) is as far as I've understood, not easy.
Love the sound it makes when it whips through the air.
I love the whistle the blade gives when you swing it
Some people might be like "uh skall how can you do that to a $600 sword", but shit, remind me to send you a sword if I ever start producing them. You don't fuck around with testing.
Seems like a perfect sword for post apocalyptic world. you need to kill, hunt, open cans and chop some firewood. It's like more practical machete.
racist
bodus1999 Nazi
Tim Lepo I was joking but why would you use an apple sign? To put the confederate flag on? I love the confederate flag myself, even wore a hat with one on it to Disney world! Got me a couple looks.
bodus1999 It's my yin and yang type of thing. Also it screams attention and makes me noticed.
***** yeeyee
Wow! this thing is amazing!! Thanks Skall!
On behalf of all who love swords, you're a monster. That edge damage made me want to weep. What a wicked sword.
How's the hand shock ?
Lycan Thorpe
Noticeable, but not too bad.
DIY - the "finish" here (i do it frequently) : get sulphuric acid (Schwefelsäure) , 1l if you want to finish your Longsword, pharmacy can order it, drink a lot of espresso or just ask in a coffeeshop for the daily waste, mix 1 part H2So4 with 2 parts of water (WATER FIRST !!!), submerge the sword (i cut a HDPE(Tryptan) - pipe in half to have a safe "bath") for about 3min (Room temp!) if hot shorter (CAVE exoth.reaction), and put the sword into the espressotrester (saturated with water of course), let it rest at least 15min , rinse, sharpen edge, done. (you can vary the times to get different results in color and texture, longer h2so4 will roughen the surface more, longer espresso will darken the oxyde layer. works with stainless steel also, needs longer times , thou.
The1Rausch btw 5:00 i see this a lot ... the persian low quality metal comming from india and pakistan etc... they make damascus out of rough iron with a 49HRc core i mean ... i tested what you did there before in my shop and it is normal. if i smash a 62HRc knife as hard as i can onto a 58HRc Knife this is exactly what you see ... once (i guess one out of 10) the harder knife just broke into 2 pieces but it was torsion-damascus and it broke along a torsion-line so ... steel will not do significant damage to steel that is harder than itself whatsoever.
The1Rausch to manufacture (and harden the steel) something in this quality (ELMAX or CPM based steel but hammered not pressed) without High-Tech, i bet just one out of 4 wouldnt break during hardening ... so i would price it at about 6000$ , 6499$ with a leather sheat. This thing is a good deal... lol
Looks a whole heck of a lot like a Gladius Hispaniansis, shorten the grip a bit & give it a disc guard and you’re there!
I love your kind of review! I hope you keep it kind of that way. Great work! :)
And i would like to buy one of these -.- but ... money ... nope.
I cry when I see you treat like that to your blades ;_; y u do dis
Duos Aiden
You know what a test is, right? And what it's supposed to figure out? You know, build quality...? Durability...? Material strength...?
I know I just... Idk blades seems too valuable to me I guess.
*****
pretty good video and pretty good blade, i laugh a lot when did u strike the knife and that like scream sound was like the scream of people watching the video XD
(still learning english e.e)
The makers gave it to him specifically because they wanted him to do this. If he babied it, they would not have gotten the value out of the deal.
Yes. That would kind of be a more interesting video to me than an abuse video. I know what I would do, but I haven't damaged blades as badly as that that were worth repairing to me.
see! that's how much damage pommels do.
thats some very good steel. good video thank you Skalla
What an interesting sound the first strike on the cheap knife made! Clearly some serious vibration occurred.
END THAT CAN RIGHTLY!
Looking at the zombie tools website; What's up with their apparent hatred for hilts? Nice sturdy blades, but made pretty much useless by the tiny hilts.
Mikehunt
Fair enough I guess lol. But it's kind of a shame, they're very sturdy blades and would be alot more practical all-round with proper hilts. That's the only thing keeping me from buying one.
That's my problem with the katanas people worship way too much too lol, they have practically no hilt, so, as my swordplay teacher calls them, they're "eastern suicide swords" lol. They're not designed for sword fighting, just for the bushido quick draw type of strike, they're one-trick ponies.
Well, who needs a guard when you can just bust the opponents sword? (Yes. That was sarcasm :3 )
My Cocaine I highly disagree. I am far more agile with a longsword, a broadsword, or a rapier, than I could be with a Katana.
Those western swords are designed for combat, for actual face to face sword fighting. A katana is designed for the primary purpose of a single surprise attack when drawn (bushido), or for assassination.
Tools of the trade: A skilled carpenter can build a house faster with a hammer and nails than with an electric screw gun and screws.
My Cocaine Are you joking?
It's sooooooo beautiful. Zombie tools did very well in giving you that sword since you've probably sold a good handful.
the design is awesome! i really love this sword
FUCK YEAH! End that shitty can unrightly... too bad the pommel doesn't detach, then you could throw it through 100 trees and end them all RIGHTLY
Who needs an axe when you got a sword?
Those were some tough tests there! :O
Holy moly :0
And imagine you use this in a fight against zombies.Pretty awesome blade.
Welp, I know what blade _I'm_ gonna buy if I ever find myself with an extra 600 quid to spend. Can't beat high quality AND badass-looking.
This shit is fucking ADAMANTIUM o_0
(And this is figuratively speaking. I know it's steel but, it's what we call a hyperbole)
maaderllin if it was really admantium it would have gone through the stand lol
and no edge damage
As I said, it was purely a figure of speech, a hyperbole.
yeah i read that
What impressed me the most, and I really mean the most, was the wood cutting with one hand in a relaxed strike.
Wow, you look way different now! Great video.
Guess who's buying one?
I feel like this was sponsored
+Tyler Jessmer
Nope, I don't do sponsorship.
I dont understand how sponsorship would even matter in a cutting test. He's literally showing you that the blade held up at least reasonably well considering he is cutting into a knife.
+Vlad The cat princess I know the blade did very well I just thought his reaction to it felt fake and as he said it wasn't
+Tyler Jessmer I think he's gotten very used to zombie tools making insanely tough swords. go over to their website and watch those drunk fools tag team a single blade for what appears to be hours on in , in a junk yard. its staggering to see a sword made like this in this day and age.
He gets sent a lot of swords free for review, but still gives honest critique. It's worth it for the company because he gives them a lot of exposure and even if he doesn't like the sword, he critiques them in such a way you can make an educated choice. Zombie Tools gave away a $650 sword for free and got 600,000+ views of exposure between the two videos. A good arrangement for both parties.
Nice edge. Because of you I am now thinking about buying an ''Apokatana''. These things seem to be really reliable, I would feel better knowing that I have a blade in my arsenal able to resist chopping a tree for example.
Nice vid btw.
Awesome sword. Great testing.
