To me, this hit harder than Dom dying in part 3. He pretty much dies in this scene internally. Going through a rough, high risk search for his wife, just to find her brain dead and tortured out of consciousness, then having to be the one to pull the trigger to end her misery caused him to snap. Even in GOW 3, he was a shell of the character we knew in GOW 1 and 2. The most painful thing about it, was that he couldn't save her. He just felt helpless. It made me as a player, feel the rage Dom had for the locust. One of my favorite cutscenes in gaming

Maria used to sneak out when they were seven and going to Dom's tree house to see him. It isn't hard to see why Dom never recovered from having to euthanize her because he knew her all of his life and as far as everyone else is concerned she *WAS* his life and his only reason for living. After this Dom just became a Dead Man Walking.

It's not Maria's death that makes this so heart breaking, it's Dom's reaction. It's his initial delusion of hope, his devastating realization, his anger at himself and what happened to the love of his life, his pleading for a solution and his realization of what he has to do next that makes this scene what it is.
The whole scene is masterful; right down to the little touches like Marcus stopping in his steps for a moment after hearing the gunshot. He has a look of sorrow in his eyes, blinks for a longer than normal time and then continues walking.

However, Dr. Isabel Hayman had theories and believed that Maria had ataxia, dystonia, nystagmus, bradykinesia, ocular toxin deposition and said that none of those diseases are curable and Maria was slowly dying as well as being in a permanent vegetative state due to the LOBOTOMY that the Locust had put her through. Dr. Hayman assured Dom that euthanizing her was the right thing to do and nothing else could have been done
Dude, I channeled that rage. My friend Andy and I were playing, and after that, we went in, and I just unleashed. For the next several minutes, he mostly just stood back and covered me while I tore the Locust apart.
I love how Marcus doesn't try to talk Dom into doing the smart thing and sneaking into Nexus, he sees Dom's pain and lust for vengeance that he's just like "fuck it, guns a' blazin"

Most players are so full of rage that they'd choose guns blazing, but many would go the smarter route too and Dom tends to side with Marcus when it comes to the mission. It's a good time to have a choice like that, especially on harder difficulties when fights are hard and a relief to avoid.

I met Dom's voice actor, Carlos Ferro, at comic con last year where I live and he told me about the story of how they recorded this scene in particular. He said they turned off most of the lights that they could and he was on his knees with a dummy in his hands playing out the emotional scene for effect. He was in tears like Dom was and the people on the motion capture set were all in tears as well, with extra people having coming in specifically to watch this scene in particular. As a younger brother I was always made to play as Dom when we did the co-op campaign as a kid so Dom became my favourite character. RIP Maria and Dom.
People that dont play this game (my girlfriend) need to understand. We were on a journey with Dom to find the love of his life. Our sweat, blood and tears were on the line for this moment. Heart breaking.
My GF them watched backseat the entire trilogy as i played through them. She didnt play, but was just as invested in the characters as i was. This scene got her more hooked into it, qnd eventually when we got to Dom's death in GOW3, well, she was beyond destroyed. I heard her use curse words I hadn't heard her say before.
This was such a tragic story. Maria fell into a bottomless depression after her and Dom's children died on E-Day. Dom did everything he could to keep Maria going. Sadly Maria could never get overcome the grief of the loss of her children. As she would walk around the city swearing everyday she saw her kids. Than finally she broke and ran off with the stranded. Dom looked for her for years while he fought the Locust. Than he found her in the state where she was lobotomized and tortured. Dom did the only thing he could do which was grant her a merciful death. Sadly the death of Maria was the final nail in Dom's coffin as he lost the will to live after that.
Anyone notice he goes through the 5 stages of grief? Denial: Seeing his wife as he remembers her. Anger: "Goddammit it's me Dominic!" Bargaining: "Marcus... I.. I don't know what to do! I don't know what to do man!" Depression: Him calming down after Marcus said, "Dom... It's okay." Acceptance: Saying his final goodbye before mercy killing her. God this is a well written scene.

Yeah that's what makes it so heart wrenching. Dom doesn't want to do it. At the same time, he couldn't let her continue to suffer anymore. As the saying goes, "If you truly love him/her, you gotta let em go"
And Dom’s true love was to die and be with her that’s what true love should be it’s very hard to find a woman who will love you instead of the money yes money can buy things but it can’t buy true love it has to come from the heart and Dom lost his true love and even release her soul and be in a better place
When Marcus puts his hand on Dom's shoulder and Dom says "I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do man.....I" then Marcus says "Dom, it's ok", that's the hardest part right there. This is where Dom truly died.
It gets worse when you think of Tai. He wasn't imprisoned as long as Maria. He was a soldier. He took his life the first chance he could. Maria had to endure. She never had the chance to end it.

We've all had a "Dom and Maria" moment in our lives. This scene just takes my breath away, makes me shake and genuinely makes me tear up. I even sometimes imagine I'm Dom and Maria is my mom or something. That's how good this games story is, is that you can insert yourself and the people around you into the game as if it was your reality. Gears of War 2. Absolute masterpiece.
That “Dom... it’s okay.” Hit me hard. He didn’t mean things will be okay. He meant it’s okay to kill her. To put her out of her misery. To end her suffering. To put an end to hope of finding her.
The way the color of the scene changes from a somewhat bright and hopeful atmosphere, and then transitions to a dark, cold, grey color as Dom realizes the reality of the situation and the desperation in his voice as he tries to reach her to no avail, coupled with Marcus’ sad tone and expression and his, “Dom…it’s okay.” Damn, truly one of the most memorable and disturbing moments from any video game I’ve ever played.
The Gears of War games were macho action games, but this scene was pretty damn sad. For two reasons for me I think. One Maria looks normal at first, but she actually is emaciated and frail lookin. And two, Dom has to shoot the woman he loves to put her out of her misery. I cried back then it still feel sad to an extent now.
I’m 29, back when I was 17 me and my best buddy stayed up all night front start to end playing this entire campaign. 12 years later I occasionally text him “Maria”. We both know exactly what it means and it starts up a conversation even though we aren’t as close as we were. This is story telling at its finest. We played for atleast 8+ hours beating this game from beginning to end. I watched the sun come up in my room playing this game with my best buddy at the time. It’s scenes like this that make me so happy that I play games. Because me and my buddy both felt this moment. We were so motivated to finish the game because of this one cutscene. We both thought we were going to save her. We were invested. When we failed. We finished that game. We finished the entire campaign of Gears of War 2 in one night. 12 years later. It still resonates. If that isn’t a thing of beauty, I don’t know what is.
I remember when I played this years ago. I was always player 2 when me and my buddy played through, so I had a special connection to Dom. After this cutscene, I went full berserk for the rest of the game. I was using my lancer to cut down locust after locust

This scene hit me the hardest when I played it at 14. Just the way he's so hopeful and loves her so much that he's delusional and doesn't realise her condition. While Marcus watches over his shoulder, understanding what is happening, saying, "Dom..." Then the dark reality dawns on Dom. He feels totally broken, devastated beyond comprehension. That pain was too overwhelming for him at first to see past his delusion. I'll never ever forget this scene.
I grew up with this game and i can say the same although i didn't cry. I just felt worse because before i played through the entire game when i was like 6-7 didn't really understand any of this
I don't know how to explain it, but Marcus saying "Dom, It's okay" is so reassuring. Like, I understand the spiraling nature of confusion Dom is going through. Then Marcus looks down to you and calmly says "it's okay", damn that immediately refocuses Dom and me. It's beautiful.
We rarely get any emotional moments from our video games today, this is a prime example of how the payoff is worth it when you take the time to craft characters and put them in unique settings and give them a history, it helps make the game memorable. None of us will forget these scenes because it left an impact on us and showed us just because your a hero, Doesn’t mean it’s gunna go well. Everyone loses someone or something, and this scene hits all the right notes, the dialogue, the sound of helplessness coming from the voice of Marcus and Dom, and the music, tugging at our heart strings this whole scene is a master piece and it made us HATE the enemy and made us want to finish the fight and bring an end to the horde. A scene like this is very powerful and I hope one day we get a new IP with sequels in unique settings with interesting characters that we can relate and get attached too.

Can you imagine all the Real Life soldiers who had to face such a situation? Going on a long campaign to save somebody who was already dead or dying. Not just a wife, Anybody they loved.
It’s truly a heartbreaking scene, I tear up every time I watch it. To make things worse Dom spends a lot of the first game and second game looking for her only to find he was too late, naturally he blames himself. Dom is never the same after this scene and voluntarily sacrifices himself to save the others in the third game. It’s so evident that he didn’t want to be alive anymore without Maria and was looking for a reason to join her.
And just look at Maria, she's atrophied every muscle, covered in dirt and scars, so pale, almost lifeless, her eyes are stuck looking to the upper left, and her eyes, they're discolored, they're black and yellow, and the way she's moaning, she moans in response when he says "it's Dominic!", showing that she still remembers and loves him. What kind of torture does it take to do that to someone? The locust are worse than the brutes from halo, that'll at least kill you quickly, by scaring you so much you suffer cardiac arrest, malnourishing you, and then just deciding to burn you or take bites out of you, they could even slap your head off like an empty glass off a counter top, superheated branding tools and massive blades, the brutes more than earn the title of "BRUTE", but the locust in gears of war, are somehow worse.
Nothing more horrifying, than finding your wife incapacitated and mentally, physically and spiritually destroyed. . . . Only a husk left behind and a man with no other choice. Gears 2 is king, and Dom is a brother I've always wanted.
Coming back to this Masterpiece of a game over 10 years later and it still is never easy to watch. The pain Dom feels is felt every time I come to this scene again.

Crazy my brother and I are going through the original trilogy too and we just got to this part. He’s never seen these games all the way through and you could hear dust settle after this scene. He had so many distressed questions.
What breaks me, is the shot of Marcus getting Dom’s attention before the reveal, what he see’s that Dom doesn’t, knowing what Maria looks like and having to bring Dom back to reality, such a powerful split second moment, to an even bigger scene. This really pulls the heart strings and still breaks my heart to this day.

The thing that made this equally traumatic and even worse for Dom *AND* Marcus that other people might not know is that Maria was also their childhood friend and neighbor. Maria used to sneak out when she was seven to go to the Santiagos and spend time with Dom in his treehouse. So Dom and Maria have had a thing for each other since they were seven! Dom joined the COG when he was 16 to support Maria when she said she was pregnant and he married her then as well. As far as everyone else is concerned Maria was Dom's life and his only reason for living. After having to euthanize her he became a Dead Man Walking.
You can tell Marcus truly cares for Dom after what happened to Maria, even at the end were they could escape with stealth he still gives him an option for revenge and stay by his side. That is a true brother.
I know everyone is talking about Maria and Don but no one notices how Marcus easily handled the situation. He doesn’t make a speech about his life being harder or yell at him to get up. He leaves Don to grieve and makes sure he’s okay when they’re reunited.
It's so utterly heartbreaking all Dom wanted was to be with his wife again. She was the only person he had left. The one time he got to hold here again she wasn't even mentally able to communicate with him. Only able to weakly out her arms around him one last time. Forcing Dom to mercy kill her. Dom lost the one person he had left and that sadly made him loose the will to live. He never recovered from this, and it weighed so heavy in his heart that his grief was palpable.
0:51 the little noise he makes before whispering "i love you" , is just so much condensed emotion into one sound, i actually felt what his heart was feeling, as if i was the one feeling those emotions. Yes, i was a little blazed, which make me extra sensitive but still.
It's mad to think that Dom goes through the 5 stages of death in about 2 minutes flat. Part 1: Denial. He see's Maria not as she is, as she was. This is Doms brain shielding him from the truth. Part 2: Anger. He enters this phase when he see's her ravaged body, Dom exclaims "No, No, No, No!" Part 3: Bargaining. Easily the hardest to watch as it reduces the person to their lowest, When he states "I Don't know what to do, Man! I don't know what to do?!" Whilst looking at Marcus for something, Anything... Part 4: Depression. Dom enters this state when he realises that nothing he can do can bring her back, again this is hard to watch as he states "I'm so sorry Maria, I Love you so much" followed by his cries of anguish. Part 5: Acceptance, You all know the part....

I met Dom's voice actor, Carlos Ferro, at comic con last year where I live and he told me about the story of how they recorded this scene in particular. He said they turned off most of the lights that they could and he was on his knees with a dummy in his hands playing out the emotional scene for effect. He was in tears like Dom was and the people on the motion capture set were all in tears as well, with extra people having coming in specifically to watch this scene in particular.
As a younger brother I was always made to play as Dom when we did the co-op campaign as a kid so Dom became my favourite character. RIP Maria and Dom.

People that dont play this game (my girlfriend) need to understand. We were on a journey with Dom to find the love of his life. Our sweat, blood and tears were on the line for this moment. Heart breaking.
My GF them watched backseat the entire trilogy as i played through them. She didnt play, but was just as invested in the characters as i was. This scene got her more hooked into it, qnd eventually when we got to Dom's death in GOW3, well, she was beyond destroyed. I heard her use curse words I hadn't heard her say before.

This was such a tragic story. Maria fell into a bottomless depression after her and Dom's children died on E-Day. Dom did everything he could to keep Maria going. Sadly Maria could never get overcome the grief of the loss of her children. As she would walk around the city swearing everyday she saw her kids. Than finally she broke and ran off with the stranded. Dom looked for her for years while he fought the Locust. Than he found her in the state where she was lobotomized and tortured. Dom did the only thing he could do which was grant her a merciful death. Sadly the death of Maria was the final nail in Dom's coffin as he lost the will to live after that.

Gears 2 is an absolute masterpiece. The story, the gameplay, the feeling you get... this game is just a masterpiece
When Marcus puts his hand on Dom's shoulder and Dom says "I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do man.....I" then Marcus says "Dom, it's ok", that's the hardest part right there. This is where Dom truly died.

And then, that hope and happiness was snatched away from us... Left only with sadness, anger, guilt and desperation. We've all had a "Dom and Maria" moment in our lives. This scene just takes my breath away, makes me shake and genuinely makes me tear up. I even sometimes imagine I'm Dom and Maria is my mom or something. That's how good this games story is, is that you can insert yourself and the people around you into the game as if it was your reality.

That “Dom... it’s okay.” Hit me hard. He didn’t mean things will be okay. He meant it’s okay to kill her. To put her out of her misery. To end her suffering. To put an end to hope of finding her.
In my opinion GOW 1,2,3 i felt like i was right there if something happens to the characters it hurts, you don't see that in alot of games anymore

The way the color of the scene changes from a somewhat bright and hopeful atmosphere, and then transitions to a dark, cold, grey color as Dom realizes the reality of the situation and the desperation in his voice as he tries to reach her to no avail, coupled with Marcus’ sad tone and expression and his, “Dom…it’s okay.” Damn, truly one of the most memorable and disturbing moments from any video game I’ve ever played.
The Gears of War games were macho action games, but this scene was pretty damn sad. For two reasons for me I think. One Maria looks normal at first, but she actually is emaciated and frail lookin. And two, Dom has to shoot the woman he loves to put her out of her misery. I cried back then it still feel sad to an extent now.
We get to see Maria just as Dom wanted to see her. That was so smart on part of the developers because it added another layer to the scene.
I’m 29, back when I was 17 me and my best buddy stayed up all night front start to end playing this entire campaign. 12 years later I occasionally text him “Maria”. We both know exactly what it means and it starts up a conversation even though we aren’t as close as we were.
This is story telling at its finest. We played for atleast 8+ hours beating this game from beginning to end. I watched the sun come up in my room playing this game with my best buddy at the time.
It’s scenes like this that make me so happy that I play games. Because me and my buddy both felt this moment. We were so motivated to finish the game because of this one cutscene. We both thought we were going to save her. We were invested. When we failed. We finished that game. We finished the entire campaign of Gears of War 2 in one night. 12 years later. It still resonates.
If that isn’t a thing of beauty, I don’t know what is.

This scene hit me the hardest when I played it at 14. Just the way he's so hopeful and loves her so much that he's delusional and doesn't realise her condition. While Marcus watches over his shoulder, understanding what is happening, saying,
"Dom..."
Then the dark reality dawns on Dom. He feels totally broken, devastated beyond comprehension. That pain was too overwhelming for him at first to see past his delusion. I'll never ever forget this scene.

I don't know how to explain it, but Marcus saying "Dom, It's okay" is so reassuring. Like, I understand the spiraling nature of confusion Dom is going through. Then Marcus looks down to you and calmly says "it's okay", damn that immediately refocuses Dom and me. It's beautiful.

We rarely get any emotional moments from our video games today, this is a prime example of how the payoff is worth it when you take the time to craft characters and put them in unique settings and give them a history, it helps make the game memorable.
None of us will forget these scenes because it left an impact on us and showed us just because your a hero, Doesn’t mean it’s gunna go well. Everyone loses someone or something, and this scene hits all the right notes, the dialogue, the sound of helplessness coming from the voice of Marcus and Dom, and the music, tugging at our heart strings this whole scene is a master piece and it made us HATE the enemy and made us want to finish the fight and bring an end to the horde.
A scene like this is very powerful and I hope one day we get a new IP with sequels in unique settings with interesting characters that we can relate and get attached too.

It’s truly a heartbreaking scene, I tear up every time I watch it.
To make things worse Dom spends a lot of the first game and second game looking for her only to find he was too late, naturally he blames himself.
Dom is never the same after this scene and voluntarily sacrifices himself to save the others in the third game.
It’s so evident that he didn’t want to be alive anymore without Maria and was looking for a reason to join her.
And just look at Maria, she's atrophied every muscle, covered in dirt and scars, so pale, almost lifeless, her eyes are stuck looking to the upper left, and her eyes, they're discolored, they're black and yellow, and the way she's moaning, she moans in response when he says "it's Dominic!", showing that she still remembers and loves him. What kind of torture does it take to do that to someone? The locust are worse than the brutes from halo, that'll at least kill you quickly, by scaring you so much you suffer cardiac arrest, malnourishing you, and then just deciding to burn you or take bites out of you, they could even slap your head off like an empty glass off a counter top, superheated branding tools and massive blades, the brutes more than earn the title of "BRUTE", but the locust in gears of war, are somehow worse.

@@DemonPrinceofHellI know this is late, but go through 1-Judgement Gears games and then check out the books Aspho Fields, Jacinto's Remnant, Anvil Gate, Coalitions End, and The Slab. Anything after that is made by the TC and in my opinion isn't worth a damn.
My bro and I grew up playing this. We stopped at judgement. I’m replaying this game now and just got to this part and it still gets to me. Haven’t played this game in like 7 or 8 years. So much nostalgia.
Crazy my brother and I are going through the original trilogy too and we just got to this part. He’s never seen these games all the way through and you could hear dust settle after this scene. He had so many distressed questions.

What breaks me, is the shot of Marcus getting Dom’s attention before the reveal, what he see’s that Dom doesn’t, knowing what Maria looks like and having to bring Dom back to reality, such a powerful split second moment, to an even bigger scene. This really pulls the heart strings and still breaks my heart to this day.
I've played so many games but this really destroyed me. I tried so hard for Dom. I know it's just a game but God damnit. This crushed me, especially for what happened on Gears 3

The thing that made this equally traumatic and even worse for Dom *AND* Marcus that other people might not know is that Maria was also their childhood friend and neighbor. Maria used to sneak out when she was seven to go to the Santiagos and spend time with Dom in his treehouse. So Dom and Maria have had a thing for each other since they were seven! Dom joined the COG when he was 16 to support Maria when she said she was pregnant and he married her then as well. As far as everyone else is concerned Maria was Dom's life and his only reason for living. After having to euthanize her he became a Dead Man Walking.

Games were amazing back then.
You can tell Marcus truly cares for Dom after what happened to Maria, even at the end were they could escape with stealth he still gives him an option for revenge and stay by his side. That is a true brother.
I actually stopped playing Gears 2 for a long time due to this scene. It broke me in a sense
I know everyone is talking about Maria and Don but no one notices how Marcus easily handled the situation. He doesn’t make a speech about his life being harder or yell at him to get up. He leaves Don to grieve and makes sure he’s okay when they’re reunited.
It's so utterly heartbreaking all Dom wanted was to be with his wife again. She was the only person he had left. The one time he got to hold here again she wasn't even mentally able to communicate with him. Only able to weakly out her arms around him one last time. Forcing Dom to mercy kill her. Dom lost the one person he had left and that sadly made him loose the will to live. He never recovered from this, and it weighed so heavy in his heart that his grief was palpable.
Marcus his brother from another mother is there his last real connection I don’t want know what would happen had Marcus died on dom

It's mad to think that Dom goes through the 5 stages of death in about 2 minutes flat.
Part 1: Denial. He see's Maria not as she is, as she was. This is Doms brain shielding him from the truth.
Part 2: Anger. He enters this phase when he see's her ravaged body, Dom exclaims "No, No, No, No!"
Part 3: Bargaining. Easily the hardest to watch as it reduces the person to their lowest, When he states "I Don't know what to do, Man! I don't know what to do?!" Whilst looking at Marcus for something, Anything...
Part 4: Depression. Dom enters this state when he realises that nothing he can do can bring her back, again this is hard to watch as he states "I'm so sorry Maria, I Love you so much" followed by his cries of anguish.
Part 5: Acceptance, You all know the part....
