I mean compared to a lot of games it is.
I played all the Gears games with my Dad. It was something we enjoyed doing. Playing through the campaigns together. He passed away on November 9th and it hurts that I will never be able to enjoy my favorite series with him again. My favorite memory is playing Gears 3 with him and obviously player 2 plays as Dom. When this scene happened my Dad slowly got up off the couch and loudly said "WELL. Now that my character blew himself up, I guess I am going to bed". I laughed so hard that night. This scene will always be my favorite death of a character not only because it was a beautifully written scene of my favorite series but because it will forever hold a place in my heart with my father.

@The Amazing Spider-Frizz I hope he does, me and my father playing through the campaign together was some of my favorite memories as we worked together to mow down hordes of enemies. Lots of laughter. We loved to play games together as it immersed us both into a story that we could talk about together and relate to equally as excited.
Life definitely has been harsh without my best friend and playing any Gears is definitely bittersweet without him but it taught me many life lessons that I can use outside of gaming to connect with my son in the future depending on whatever he takes an interest in

Dom's death always hit the hardest for the folks holding the second controller, even to this day.
I started with 2nd controller from day one, so much so that I was always the Arbiter from Halo or Dom from Gears.

These two scenes were saying it’s “ok” to be sad.
The main characters were meant to strong men without any weakness. You never saw them cry or mourn the loss of their comrades.

the part that gets me the most is right at the part where Marcus realized what Dom was going to do. that feeling that you can't do anything to stop what is about to happen.

Every part of Doms story is so tragic and sad. When I first played this game and got to this part where he was talking to his wife I cried a little bit not knowing what was about to happen... and then it happened. And I had to stop playing for like 20 minutes to cry. And I was serving in Afghanistan at the time too going through some shit at the time myself. Dom still is the best character for me.
Man's, that's rough. Personal connections always make things hit home harder. I'd had it spoiled beforehand so I knew it was gonna happen (just didn't know when), and then when that chapter came up with the name 'Brothers to the End' I was like "oh fuck, here it comes". Still made me tear up. Even now nearly 8 years later it still gives me chills.
To start off thank you for serving. This part hit me hard as well this is such a good game trilogy i hope your still playing gears because 5 is coming out soon

The image of Marcus in the fetal position, wreathed in flame at 5:10 is incredibly powerful. This strong, mountain of a man curled up as everything burns around him. There's barely a wasted second in this scene.
I always noticed it, but I wasn't sure how to put it into words of what this scene means back then. Now that I'm older, it feels like in moments like this, you just feel helpless much like a child. Cannot control what happens around you, so you shut down and crawl into yourself.

I knew Dom wasn't worried about coming back when he handed his knife to Marcus and didn't wait for it to be handed back to him. He had this in his head for a long time and saw it. He was ready. Some of the subtle things that story tellers do that can easily be missed. I openly wept when Dom had to kill his wife and I openly wept when he sacrificed himself for his friends. Such a heart wrenching scene.
When he handed off his knife, he figured it might happen here.. his life was always full of irony.
Man I thought it was over after he found Maria. I shed tears for him. I really thought we had found her at least and she’d be ok. I hate Locusts . After Dom died, it was all headshots and frag tags.

I love how you showed the way he slowly began thinking suicidally, giving away his things to friends and leaving his tag with Maria, which is a big big indicator in itself, hence the foreboding musical sting.
It's crazy watching this years later with the maturity and knowledge I have gained since, Dom is so much more human than he already was.
I remember during release, after the grave scene, when Marcus turns to give him his knife and Dom isn’t there, I knew something was up…… boy was there. Still possibly the best cutscene in gaming history IMO.
That string/piano certainly doesn't help once you recognize it as the melody behind Gary Jule's Mad World.

Dom doesn't get enough respect, and neither does the writing in this series.
Dom is definitely one of my favorite characters in the game but the voice actor for Dom is definitely my favorite in the series. I just think he did an amazing job, especially in this scene and in Maria's Death scene in Gears of War 2. I'll probably never forget the moment I played through that one co-op.

I've never played any of the Gears of War games but even its influence on gaming got to me as it's that good. I knew how tragic Dom's story was and you can feel how sad this outcome was. Seeing Dom going out like that was tear-inducing enough but Marcus' desperate pleas for Dom to stop was gut wrenching.

Dom risked his life to save his squad and be reunited with his family. A true hero. I remember seeing this in Gears 3 and I knew that after seeing what happened when he found his wife and leading up to it in Gears 2, he was going to go senile after losing everything he held dear like friends, fellow soldiers, his kids and now is wife. A true legend who sacrificed himself so that his squad could live. And put his family first before his military life. He was going to be damned if he lost Marcus or anyone else and it was a touching tribute to him that Marcus put his Dominic as JD's middle name. James DOMINIC Fenix in Gears 4. RIP Dom! So no joke. I used to be manager for GameStop. I worked the Midnight Release of GoW 3 and opened the next morning (Managers typically did this). Friend walks in around lunch time and blerts out "DUDE CAN YOU BELIEVE DOM DIED". He looked at my face and he knew he just spoiled it. He apologized and said he thought I knew.

I once remembered that i disliked GOW because of the gore but i later learned about how it was essentially a war for survival in it's ugliest form and how each character was woven in made me realize how good of a game series it is

I don't trust Gamepass. I took the 2 week trial and Microsoft took at least £60 out of my bank account and said that I'd bought stuff from the Microsoft Store. I had to disable games pass because of it.
I don't know why it happened but that's why I was confused. Its £8 a month here and I though "hey, I can keep that up, I have more than enough to manage this". Got a few games then about 2 weeks later I found out that all of a sudden have NO MONEY. £40 on one day (according to the bank records I had bought 4 things in the Microsoft Store that were £10 each) and another £20 the next day. Then I checked my transactions on Microsoft's website and it said that I hadn't bought anything.
No, I just shut down the account and left it at that. In all fairness it's probably easier and better to just buy the game because the roster switches a lot so there's no guaruntee that it will stay there.
I will play it though, I spend a lot of time on games, my 400+ videos are proof.

I remember watching Dom go to the grave and talking to my friends in co-op hoping he would be able to heal and get with Sam. Then I saw him leave his tags and had a really bad feeling like it was foreshadowing...and I was right. My friends and I all stopped for a good 10 minutes after the cutscene.
Leaving his tags, not taking the knife back off Marcus, I'm certain that's when he decided he was done

used to play this game with a kid in my neighborhood who looked exactly like me, just a bit younger. we beat all of gears 3 together and stayed up eating snacks and drinking soda. hung out all the time, it was awesome. this was the most shocking moment to date it literally killed both of us haha. looking back now i don't know if i cried but I'm 22 and crying at this scene now. probably a little messed up of a game to be playing that young but gears of war was a foundational part of my childhood. Lucas if you ever read this you were like the little brother i never had and i still think about you. I really hope youre doing good for yourself man.

I wish Dom survived. I'm still hope that fourth Carmine brother we saw in Gears of War 4 is somehow still alive. I think there is a video out there that talks about that. The camera is zoomed in and we see him get blown to the side but not die. It looks like he just fell off the wall.

To be honest, when I saw that first scene, with the Angel, I knew in my gut, that the clock was ticking for Dom. Didn't make it any easier, though.
I could remember playing GoW 3 for the first time. About a week after it came out. Around that time, I was so excited with games that I'd finish them through within hours. I was about half the age I am now. I wasn't ready. Throughout the other campaigns, I never treated Dom as an actual character. Even when he was reunited with Maria. It really hit me. At the time, my father's death still had a huge impact on me. How someone could be there your whole life, and until the moment they're gone you realize how much they meant. I remember watching this scene for the first time. The second he turned the truck around, my heart had stopped. All I could do was hold my breathe and hope that they wouldn't kill off someone that's been there through it all. When he's speeding through the tunnel, my throat grew tighter. As he dedicated his last words to his wife, "Didn't think it would end this way huh? Huh Maria?" The words that pierced my soul. Realizing that in Marcus' expression, him and us, felt so helpless to the inevitable. I couldn't bear to watch the rest of it. My eyes were pouring rain. I couldn't breathe. To think that a character's fictional death could have such an impact on the consumer. It's truly amazing. I even remember when the trailer came out for Gears 4 and we saw Marcus being choked by the Swarm. I didn't want to experience that same pain, and thankfully it didn't come around

What made this game amazing for me is that it's the only game that's ever made me cry. Any music, art, photography, media that can move you like that is strong indeed. This game in my mind is masterpiece in that sense. It doesn't matter what you think about the overall gameplay, the shooting mechanics, etc. What matters is your reaction. To me the fact this made me cry made me realize I was more invested in the characters and their journey then I realized.

You can tell Dom despite everything, didn't want to die. He shuttered before he drove back into the tunnel. He knew what was coming and he knew he was about to leave his brother. But he knew he would also be saving him. This death was done so damn well. God rest ye, Dom.

Gears if war series should've ended at 3, there was grit and dire stakes when you played those games. GOW 4 and 5... There no soul in the characters all the grit was gone and there just felt like was just something missing within those games.

This scene can still make me cry everytime I see it. I couldn't stop crying when I first got to this part of the game. Dom is one of my favourite characters and to see him die broke my heart. This is one of the best moments in all of video games. The acting on all parts, the writing, the build up in game and in other games, mad world kicking in the moment it happens...One of the very few moments I wept for a video game as a teenager. Beautiful scene in a legendary series
This scene is why JD can’t die in Gears 5. At that point, Marcus had already lost his best friend (whom he said himself that he saw as a brother), both of his parents, and his wife, so JD is all Marcus has left. With JD gone too, Marcus would have nothing to live for anymore during Gears 6. He would be driven solely by vengeance against those that took away everything he ever loved, going down a warpath that would eventually lead to his own demise, and I don’t think any of his friends that are still alive would be able to save him from himself, not even Baird or Cole, seeing as they didn’t really have the same kind of influence on him that Dom and JD did.
