  • Our quick tutorial video that will show you how to use the Offset Tool in Cricut Design Space to fill in any font with a pen. Unlike other tutorials, this method doesn't require slicing a hatch pattern into your letters, and it won't take forever to complete!
    This simple technique is easy to set up in Design Space and it runs quickly on any Cricut machine, including the Maker, Explore, Venture or Joy Xtra. It's great to try for cardmaking, invitations and other paper projects! Never worry about hollow letters or fonts bubbling when you try to write them - this simple #cricuthack will let you use any font you want as a writing font in Cricut! Combine this method to use any pen to get results that will make your projects really pop!

    This seems much easier than and quicker than filling the inside with lines. Thanks for this. I have awesome fonts and want the filled-in look for all of my text.

      Thanks for watching Michelle! I agree, I do not like the cross-hatch method...I've tried it and it takes 45 minutes to fill in a single word! Who has that kind of time? The offset method doesn't work perfectly for every font, but I've had good luck with it for most fonts I've used. Good luck!

    Could you specify the pens you used on this video? Specially the gold one. Thank you

    • @SniptoIt
      @SniptoIt  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mhiro! In the first section of the video (filling in Happy Birthday), I used a 0.4mm fine point Cricut pen to create the outline and a 1.0mm black medium tip Cricut marker as the fill.
      For the other examples, I used a 1.0mm gold Cricut metallic marker to create the outline and fill. For the second variation ("Get a Tattoo") I also used a 0.4mm black Cricut fine point pen for the outline, and a 1mm red Crayola marker for the fill. Hope this helps!

    Will this work with the joy? And what if you don’t have a marker?

    • @SniptoIt
      @SniptoIt  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Natalie! The offset feature is available to Joy users as a regular feature of Design Space for desktop and iOS, but not Android users - so you should be able to employ this technique.
      If you don't have a marker for the Joy, you can still use the 0.4mm fine point pen to fill in letters, you will need to create internal offsets small enough that the regular pen will draw a line without leaving gaps. I would try setting the internal offsets to 0.016 inches (the width of the pen tip). I have filled in text using just the pen, and it just takes a bit of trial and error.
      Good luck!

    Would this work with the cricut transfer foil system?

    • @SniptoIt
      @SniptoIt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Kerry, that's a great question, and I've done some tests, and there are some important factors to consider when filling with a pen vs filling with the foil tool.
      1. A pen or marker's ink will bleed a bit into the paper and spread out. The foil doesn't do this, so you have to try to get full foil coverage.
      2. The foil can tear or wrinkle if you work it too much
      What I did was create a test, and I found that if you use the medium foil tip for the outline of the text and the internal offset, you get pretty decent results provided you are using a skinny script font and your font size is pretty small.
      I'm going to keep experimenting with this and I'll use it to create a new video on the topic.

    I couldn't get it to work as well, but it helps to have this info. I think it depends on the font. I'll keep trying. Thanks

    • @SniptoIt
      @SniptoIt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Shama. I had to use a lot of trial and error before I was confident about sharing this technique, and you're right, it doesn't work perfectly for every font. I would try using a 1mm Cricut or Crayola marker to fill in the font, and if that doesn't work, consider a 2mm Cricut calligraphy pen. (although the calligraphy pen will not work if your font is small, and may change the appearance of your font). Good luck!

    When I attempted this, I noticed that my Offset function indicates that it's Beta. It wouldn't create the negative offset.

    • @SniptoIt
      @SniptoIt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Merrie, you can see in the video that it says Beta on my Offset too, but if you drag the distance slider to the left of center you will get a negative value offset. Then you can customize the number until you get a good fit for your offset line.

    • @SniptoIt
      @SniptoIt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sillymamacita3854 That's odd. Can you enter a positive number for an external offset? There may be other issues going on with your Design Space installation. Perhaps try quitting and emptying the app cache

    • @SniptoIt
      @SniptoIt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ashley, I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with this technique. What font are you using, and how large is it? Depending on the font, size, pen type, you may need to experiment with your offset values until you get a working formula. I still have to use trial and error when I use this technique for filling in a new font for the first time.

    • @SniptoIt
      @SniptoIt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Julie, sorry this technique didn't work for you. I had to use trial and error when I first started using this method, and different fonts, font size and pen type will all affect your results. When I'm writing on a card, I have filled different fonts using pens from 0.4mm all the way to 2 mm. If you're having problems and would like help, post your font and size you're trying to write and I'll see if I can help!

      Hi Jane, thanks for the feedback. I'll be sure to keep it in mind for future videos. In the meantime, you can slow down the playback by clicking the Setting icon (shaped like a gear wheel) in the lower right hand corner. Then select Playback Speed (default setting is Normal) and then select a slower speed - .75 / .5 /.25 (aka three quarter speed, half speed, or quarter speed)
      The sound might be a little distorted for you, but for this video, it shouldn't matter.
      If you prefer, you can read a full description of each step with images on my blog at sniptoit.com/how-to-make-cricut-fill-in-letters/
