Should You Buy A Car With High Mileage

  • In this video, I answer a simple car question: should you buy a car with high mileage. If you are looking at buying a car with 150,000 miles, then there are a few things that you should be aware of before you purchase the car. Firstly, you should do a full inspection of the car because a car with high mileage can have some serious problems (or not). Secondly, you should think about how long you want the car to last. I go over those two factors, as well as many more, in the video!

Well said. Most cars can lost well over 300k miles if well taken care of. It's only after 150k miles, 'small' things like the seat motor going out but that can be easily repaired.

I'm a dealer and a mechanic and sold & drove about 3000 in the course of 25 years & 90% of people are wrong because I 100% will chose a good running high mile car because you are saving money in case it breaks down. And your low mile low quality car can still break down after you already overpay for it. MY ADVISE : buy a good condition quality high mile car (eg.toyota honda) over any low mile NISSAN, CHEVY, FORD, DODGE, KIA and many others cars (exept chevy and other trucks and older nissan models prior 2000

I paid $15000 for a 1999 suzuki swift with 400000 km. sure it's a bit rusted, and the engine takes 10 or 20 cranks to get kicking, and the exhaust manifold isn't connected so it sounds like a monster truck, and the brakes take a good kicking to stop, and the windshield is cracked, and the tires are bald, and the suspension bounces like crazy, and the roof leaks, and the body is covered in dents and rust but it turns heads I'll tell ya. money well spent.

    when it happens)

  • @DickGazInYa
    @DickGazInYa 5 ปีที่แล้ว +37

You can buy a hell cat, trailer the thing to a track and beat the hell out of it, and trailer it back home for a year straight. Its gonna have super low mileage, but it's been through the ringer lol.
On the other hand, you can buy the same car, and baby the thing to 200k miles. Other than wear items (tires, brakes, belts, fluids etc), the high mileage car will be in much better condition provided there is no rust.
Basically, you can not tell the condition of a car by mileage alone. If you assuming everything with low mileage is perfect, you are in for a hell of a surprise down the road.

I have done plenty of research and there's plenty of it out there. The notion that an engine can only last so many miles may be a myth unless we're talking over 500K miles. According to experts, there are 2 things that will kill an engine: oil starvation and overheating.
I/we have owned a few high mileage units around here:
VW Jetta with over 300K miles then the transmission kicked the bucket.
VW Passat TDI with a bit over 300K miles an accident put that car out of its misery, our insurance gave us $8500.00 pay off, according to the insurance adjuster the car had a lot of life left.
Currently, own BMW 528e with 280K miles still running like a champ, BMW e38 with 250K miles still going strong and to top it off they run, feel and look pretty nice.

I took a gamble. I bought a Chevy Silverado 1500 with 214,000 miles on it. The owner got a rebuilt transmission in it. I have a 3 year or 100,000 mile warranty on the transmission. It just passed inspection. I also paid for an oil change and flush. It runs good. Thinking about forking out money for a tune up as well. My work commute is fairly close. Probably roughly 4 miles round trip so that helps. Plus I bought it to haul some mulch and soil for our garden. I am happy with this buy so far! Wish me luck!

Well one most people don't have a mechanic on a leash to go car shopping with them .2. Most private seller know what condition their vehicle are in and its secret problem are. Which a non mechanic shopper doesn't notice unless it's obvious...Most private sellers will NOT let a mechanic shop check their vehicles out because of that reason..More expensive vehicles over $10k might let a mechanic look at it..

High mileage is not a reliable predictor for how long a car is going to last if you ask me. Cars with high mileage can have spend most of its miles on the highway. A car with only half the mileage could be used in the city for stop, start driving. A better predictor could be the wear and tear of the car. For example the steering wheel is that worn or not. The door rubbers, chairs, safety belts, all that indicate lots of start and stopping.

It all depends on how much of that mileage is highway. A former salesman car is good, a former police. Getting a used car from a good car rental place in a place where you have to drive a long distance from point A to point B maybe also be a good idea.

My friend bought a used 2013 Honda civic from dealership with 98,000 miles on it for $10,000 and paid $800 for registration and taxes. Since then he is spending money on the car every month. He changed engine mounts one month, next month he changed VTEC solenoid, MAP sensor, cleaned MAF sensor. next month he said transmission not shifting smooth he changed transmission oil 3 times 3 quarts every time, transmission solenoids, then he changed tensioner, serpentine belt, then water pump, Changed brakes, rotors, he did valve adjustments, now he said timing jumped by 2 teeth. HELL of a time. Waste of time. Buy brand new, use for 90000 miles sell and get new one. No used car.
