True!! However, there is one in particular engine that is a beast and super reliable given you do scheduled maintenance!! And its not a Toyota or Honda.
I'm talking about GMs 3.8 liter. Commonly found in the Buick LeSabre, Pontiac grand prix, and others. It's a beast man!!

I'm retired and mechanically inclined, so if the oil consumption gets out of hand, I'll just drop a new piston and ring kit in it and keep it until someone wrecks it or I die. Best car ever.

problem with carollas is finding a good stick...my '97 automatic is gutless and gets poor gas mileage, but it did make it to 190k before the first 4 digit repair job and has done well since...
civics have always been good to me and they never lack for power, I can't think of a better car value for safety+reliability+responsiveness+economy...however buying them used can be tricky because a lot of people abuse them (I've seen the same issue is pretty common here with acura legends)
the 1990 accord ran great and was still running great near 300k, minus a few starter issues, but had those annoying automatic drink dumpers that go back and forth every time you turn the key or open or close your door...which forced the move to a 1999 accord which is still moving right along with 365k after some 4 digit transmission and starter work 10 years ago...
my favorite car was my '83 accord, which got 35 to 38 mpg and ran so smooth I had to really watch because a couple times on straight portions of isolated freeway crossing the country I thought I was doing 75 and I may have been well into the three digits...it stopped running so well to the day california came out with their unique gas formulation and the mileage instantly dropped into the mid 20s (but I drove it in other states and it miraculously drove better and got 35+)

I'm still driving my 2004 red Honda Accord EX. It's got 225k miles on it. One owner. I bought it brand new off the lot with 80 miles on it. Sticker price was $28k, I paid $20,850.
I'm finally shopping for a new Honda Accord because the front passenger door doesn't open from the inside anymore, only the driver's side window works, the rear lights on the back of the car all stopped working, the sound system dashboard isn't visible anymore, the electronic key fob no longer works, and there's electrical issues throughout the car. But it's got 4 tires and starts most of the time... 😋 I estimate that I've saved AT LEAST $150k by running that car into the ground, and not buying a new one.
I think it's time to retire the beauty. I guess I got my money's worth. 😂

How you take care of a car plays a significant role, no matter the quality. Yes a high-quality vehicle is better but additional TLC does help. My only American car was a 2000 Lincoln LS that I purchased in 03 with 50000 miles. Traded it in in 2015 with 267000 miles. The only major issue was the air conditioner was out during trade in. Precisely. Many owners today lack the know-how of vehicle maintenance and blame the manufacturer instead of their ignorance. A BMW M3 can go past 200k the same as a Camry - because I've done it.

@@ssjlkrillin That's one of the main reasons why I've made it a point to learn how to maintain my own car. Unfortunately, the most I can do is change my brake pads and my rotors. And on my previous vehicle, changing the spark plugs was very easy. I would have learned how to change my own oil, but I don't have a jack that can get my car high enough for me to get under it.

Got a 2016 Toyota Corolla back in 2018...was a Florida rental sold to me by Hertz $2.5k below avg resale. Only spent for new battery, 4 new tires, front rotors/brake pads, front driver's side caliper, & just the oil changes like once a year *light driving*, maintanance mileage interval checks & few rounds of wiper blades & that's it over 4+ yrs now. No check engine lights, sensor replacement or under the hood or exhaust disasters. Can't complain. Worth the same 4 yrs later due to chip/inventory shortages. Got lucky.

I still have and drive a 2008 V6 Accord with 196,000 miles. I use it for business, inspecting construction job sites piling the miles for $.67/mile rather than using my almost new 2021 Accord with a 2.0 turbo or my insanely expensive to drive pickup truck. My 2008 drives like new, looks shiny and perfect, everything works, no slop in the steering or suspension and the motor makes great power and is lively and responsive to drive. It's almost free to drive, regular synthetic oil changes and 27 mpg, no depreciation. I bought it from a Navy pilot being deployed for $7500 in 2018 when it had 90,000 miles. I could get $5000-$6000 for it now, making the Accord close to a worlds record bargain. But I don't want to sell it (I tend to personify) because I think of the car as being a brave and sturdy overachiever (like me, hopefully?). Compared to my much newer vehicles, when it comes to vehicle dynamics, I'm giving nothing up when driving my V6 Accord.

Changing a timing belt is not a preventive maintenance. It is mandatory... And you should normally change it at 100 000 kms (60 000 miles). Changing it at 145 000 miles and not blowing the engine up (if it is true) has little to do with the car itself, and everything to do with luck. Because 99 % of OEM timing belts used in any kind of car nowadays are made at the same place in Mexico.

    • @dooflicker1

@@charlesjackson1700 Yeah I use Marvel as well in the Camry once a month in the gas. I also use it in the gas of my motorcycles, snowblower, generator etc. It helps keep the carbs clean for which I do run non ethanol fuel in. We used to have a chevy equinox with the 2.5 4 cylinder that burned oil way more than the Camry. I ran a full bottle of Marvel in the oil of the equinox and it did decrease the oil consumption drastically but only for a short time. I would imagine if I had done it more it may have prolonged it. We sold the equinox not long ago. As for the Camry, only using around 2/3's of a quart of oil every 5,000 miles is not bad. Plus I am waiting to see if the oil consumption is going to reduce anymore just using Amsoil otherwise I would use Marvel. Also I am gonna start to push the oil drain interval some to see if the oil consumption stays the same, gets better or starts to get worse. I picked this Camry up for cheap so I don't mind seeing how Amsoil is going to do with time. I know people have mixed feelings about using Amsoil which is understandable. For me it has worked out good. It is the most expensive if you buy it by the quart at retail but if you get a preferred account it gets 25% cheaper by the quart and then gets cheaper than that if you buy it in larger quantity. I use the 0w20 in 3 Toyotas currently. The last time I purchased Amsoil 0w20 I bought a drum of it which worked out to be $8.55 a quart. Of course oil has gone up in price since then but being I have a drum of it I will not need to buy oil for a while. Hopefully the price of oil will come down when I need to get more. We'll see.

Those Camrys from the 2007 through 2009 had those engines that were known for burning oil and many of those were replaced under warranty.. The one you have is still running well.. and not consuming that much oil. The Marvel mystery oil will definitely keep the rings clean and keep them from sludging up and sticking. It would have been good if it could have been used from the start. I know the price of oil has skyrocketed as well along with gas. I know a lot of people swear that by that Amisol oil. With proper maintenance, just about anything can go 200,000 miles. I haven't gotten less than 275,000 out of a car since the 90's.

I got 276,800 out of my 1992 Dodge Shadow America with the 2.2 liter 4 cylinder engine . I used non-synthetic Pennzoil 10w30 oil changed every 3000 miles . After the first head gasket blew at 126,000 miles, I had to change the head gasket and stretch bolts every 60,00 miles . I scrapped it when the unibody was rusting out above the rear subframe .

1998 maxima bought brand new in 1998, it now has 397,000 miles. Doesn’t burn any oil yet. A friend of mine also had a 2010 altima that went 200k miles before he sold it for something else. Great cars.

I have a 2004 Saab 93 Aero, with a manual transmission. The miles on this car is 193k miles. Still driving like new. I spent some money on upgrades to the stereo with back up and front cameras, rims and suspension, and added ac seats. The vehicle has been very good, no major anything. The only bad thing is the premium 93 octane fuel requirement.
