Four years ago l bought a 1997 Toyota Hilux just a basic work ute for $1500 it had done 420000 kilometres on it and now has 436000 kilometres on it you are right about components breaking down well a couple of components have worn out l never got any service records with it but replacing the rocker cover gasket the cam and cam chain in very good condition very clean no sludge and it doesn't burn oil at all no problems from the gearbox or engine after the engine is a 22R motor a very reliable motor and another thing the Hilux is worth much more than what l paid for it and l have a list of what l have done to the Hilux
I'd debate your point about buying a car at 100,000km or at 140,000km. If the original owner has traded the car at 140,000km, it's not really likely they had the 100,000km servicing done. If they had, they would keep the car even longer than 140,000km to get their money's worth out of the servicing. You can expect the 100,000km used car has not had the service done and factor that cost into the purchase...but it's also not had another 40,000km put on it. You can't count on the 140,000km car having had the servicing done...it probably has not. So you're getting an older car and still have to do the servicing.
My current Toyota Camry hybrid is running at 430k phv usage. Service my car monthly so far no major issue, minor wear and tear changes only. Guess, Toyota is made to last

Typical gasoline engine lasts about 300 to 400,000 km. So if you purchase a car near that, an engine rebuild is in the horizon.
