  • The Jacobite at Carlisle:
More stock with CDL hauled by 37.
    Southbound Intermodal
    14 June 24
Late on the Thursday evening (13 June) I noticed a train on Real Time Trains from Carnforth to Tom na Faire Depot at Fort William. It must be Jacobite stock and I was curious to see it. Scheduled to be at Carlisle from 8 untill 8:20 or thereabouts.
Early Friday morning and its not set off yet ... then at 7 20 - its already at the station. Will the signallers hold it until its scheduled departure time? I took the risk and rushed into Carlisle to find the train still in A Road.
37516 plus 2 Mk2f Tourist second Opens, a Mk2f First Open, a Mk1a Tourist second Open and a Mk 1 Restaurant Miniature Buffet. All stock from the 1960s and early 70s. Only the RMB hadn't been fitted with CDL - I think all the doors are locked out of use.
Strange that I can remember when Mk2fs were first introduced on the West Coast Mainline. I went to an exhibition of then new BR stock at Steamtown, Carnforth in 73 and thinking how uncomfortable the seating looked compared to what had gone before!
We also see the JG Russel contract intermodal heading south through the station and a couple of passenger trains.
And the Gull which has nested in one of the Holding Sidings, between the rails has a chick. I wonder if it will survive the movement of trains to become a chip-pinching lout like most other gulls these days?

Some really classy stock there Leslie. Nice. I hope nothing happens to the little feller. All the best.

Thanks Tim. Not often I pay much attention to the stock

I expect the gull sees the train as a predator and is trying to drive it off. It succeeded see! 😁

Every generation thinks the seats in new trains are worse than what's gone before! 😁 But they gave sterling service in Mk 3 stock right up to the 2000s.

Indeed but I can remember when Mk2 setats were seen as less comfortable than in the earlier Mk2s and then the late Mk2 seats with bright orange and bright green covers.

On the face of it, Les, it was either an early breakfast or no breakfast and sustenance later from a local eatery for you. So, WCR are having to do what they ought to have done long ago. Their procrastination cost them dearly. Oddly enough it had strange time-keeping for the remainder of the journey - 30 min EARLY at Helensburgh Upper, on-time at Crianlarich and finally 15 min LATE at Fort William.
At 6:23 another gull appears from the weeds on No 1 Road and flies off. At 6:55 you catured a gull going back to near that weed patch. Another nesting gull not spotted before? As for chicks. It is hardly a threatened species. One less to crap on people or cars is one better.

Thanks. The gulls are a bother even when they restricted their activities to the station wall

Herring gulls apparently are, according to the bird experts. That's why they're seen inland so much now, because there's no longer plenty of fish in the sea. There was a piece about it on Springwatch just this week
