Trains at Carlisle.
2 excursion loco fails
10-12 July 2022
On Sunday 10th, Carlisle saw few regular passenger trains and the odd freight. A Surprise working was an ROG class 37 heading from Derby to Kilmarnock. It returned south on the Tuesday. The Colas / Network Rail New Measurement train also made an appearance. The highlight for me was the appearance of Jubilee class 45690 Leander. All looked good until the loco was running around its train, left in platform 1. It took water at High Wapping Sidings rather than when it got to Upperby for turning. Turned out that whilst at Carlisle a superheater element failed with the result that there was no way Leander could haul a train. No auxiliary diesel either so one was sent via the WCML from Steamtown, Carnforth,
Monday 11th was, I suppose, an ordinary day. Apart from TPE cancellations (the norm these days) everything appeared to be running smoothly. I recorded trains both at Etterby, north of the city, and on the station. Trains included TPE 68s, including one being delivered from York en route to the DRS Kingmoor TMD.
Tuesday 12th was when West Coast had more bad luck. We couldn't work out, from Real Time Trains, what was happening at Hellifield. Turned out British India Line had failed at Bentham, en route from Carnforth to Hellifield (where it would have coupled onto the Dalesman). A pipe connecting the tender to the loco had burst. As a result the pair of 37s hauled the Dalesman all the way to Carlisle and back. So bad for the steam enthusiasts but good for lovers of classic diesels and Class 37s!

Oh dear Leslie...not one ..but two. Still made it all the more interesting for you. Very good as always. All the best.
Thanks Tim, more chaotic with my next vid 🥴
Good to see so many Class 37😍
I do my best! Some weeks they are everywhere and others none.
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing
Thanks!
Excellent video! The double header Class 37 looked epic! I wish I went to Carlisle that day
Thanks!
Thanks!
Spectacular observation of Train operations 👍♐️
Thanks - really glad that you enjoyed it
Another great vid Leslie even with the failures!
Thanks!
I only discovered your channel yesterday and what a treasure trove of interesting and informative episodes! Thanks so much for sharing these with us.
Thanks John. I really appreciate that
Nice shot at18:00with locos everywhere!
Indeed!
wonderful video Leslie
Thanks!
Hi Leslie Another great video, it always seems so busy there, I've only been a couple of times on a Saturday (last year I think), but didn't see anything like as much as you do, lol. Thanks
Peter, thanks! It isn't so much that it's busy all at once but spread over quite a few hours each visit! Apart from charters and excursions it can be quiet on a Saturday.
Excellent video Leslie, a great mix of locos.
Thanks Philip, glad you enjoyed
Very good. I am shocked at the amount of vegetation on the tracks af the southern end of the station.
Thanks. The vegetation continues to grow with no sight of weedkilling other than on the main lines. I was at York the other week and was surprised at the weeds there too.
@@LeslieGilpinRailways I recently played Trains on the Tennessee Mountain Railroad and Great Smokey Mountain Railroads, both have full time track inspectors. No vegetarian was noticeable. Here both Marylebone and Aylesbury need the RHTT and the foliage outside Marylebone was dreadful.
@@hamshackleton even the station staff think it's a disgrace. A friend suggested entering the station tracks for a horticultural competition.
Great video, and very informative Les, cheers, Steve .
Thanks Steve, much so!
Thanks a lot for your footage, I especially like the amount of information you do give and the way how you do this with titles! Please go on!
Thanks for that! Glad you enjoy these.
Hi Lesiie,
We have things going wrong on our model railways all the time but seeing this just shows we are not the only ones to suffer so a super video I have liked it but why not many have is very strange but well done always nice to see well photographed full size engines.
Cheers Robert.
Thanks Robert If anyone didn't like then perhaps I didn't portray the events in a worse light given the title lol
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Having looked today I notice you still have no likes not even the one I did so its YT not showing them I would think as this video is doing so well it must have some. With the weather as it is I hope you will not go railfanning in the next couple of days.
Cheers Robert.
@@robertstrainset6556 there are likes - not a fantastic number compared with the views. I might have made the like count not visible
Thanks
Thank you!
great stuff leslie, such a nice spot there!
Thanks Mark!
Thanks for sharing. I always think that mainline steam excursions should always be top and tailed with steam and diesel. This is so the train is turned around in the shortest time possible when there is a failure. As I would hate to see steam not allowed on Network Rail anymore due to the number of failures! Looks like Carlisle still has a lot of bullhead rails which are showing their age & wear at the fishplate joints!
Bill I think the operators have 50 years experience now since excursions were resumed after the 68 steam ban. It still surprises me though when they send out the odd failure. Yes lots of bullhead in the sidings at Carlisle - and the last remaining bullhead on the WCML running lines.
Hi Leslie (from my sick bed). Most horrendous flu/cold but testing negative for covid. To entertain myself I'm watching your video's. I see you managed to get Tim Geaney in this one (he of the thick long wollen socks). Cracking footage of the trains that is - not Tim😄. Ah well medicine time - cough bottle mixture tastes like fire water. Cheers Euan
Get well soon Euan! Mr Geary has managed to creep into a few videos of late. It's what comes from chatting with him between activity lol. Glad you enjoyed
Great video, well filmed.👍🎥👍👍👍😊
Thanks
Great informational video. Love it
Thanks!
Great video Les , shame about Leander, is it an easy mend or more of a stripdown ?
Some cracking shots Les, must be a superb camera you have :) hope you had your sunscreen on , dont want you goinf a w o l before next week . super vid Les STAY SAFE
A T B MATEY Syd :)
Thanks Syd. I'm no expert but I would have thought that replacing a superheater element was relatively straightforward once the engine is cold.
Leader seemed to be steaming well enough, had a full head of steam departing Carlisle, would a broken superheater thingumidoodle have completely disabled it?
It was sufficient an issue for West Coast to declare it a failure. Although it maintained 200lb of steam pressure and went for turning with its support coach, it wasn't allowed to haul anything.
@@hamshackleton I'd expect something like that though I'm no engineer.
Voyagers on Glasgow Euston services ?.
Yes we still get them! To Glasgow around 6pm and then 3 hours later Glasgow to Crewe.
Why are the railways overgrown it’s been years since I went on a train it’s like a 3rd world railway
It's a sad state of affairs which will only lead to extra costs.
Jon sharp 👋🛸👽
When you see trains in seriously weird liveries you have to ask whether the operators have got their eye on the ball?
I can imagine worse liveries
@@LeslieGilpinRailways Better a thick coat of soot and brake dust.
Why are so many of the stations made i a turn, and like at carlisle there are small trees all over the tracks,it doesen,t look nice.
Sadly Network Rail who own the tracks have failed to properly maintain the sidings at Carlisle and many other stations.
@@LeslieGilpinRailways It,s about time they do something because this looks like........
@@mortenjohansen8148 it's going to come up and bite them when the track fails for whatever reason.
@@LeslieGilpinRailways When the tomatoes Come then..... 🤣🤣
Who pays for the gay train livery? LGBGQ or the annual price rise to the passenger.
Its been like that since Avanti took over - when all the Pendolinos had to be rebranded from Virgin livery
