I work at Lectron, that should be a simple fix. The bogging is from the metering rod being too lean. Either the previous owner messed with it too much or the motor has an air leak somewhere (or bad reeds). Try setting the idle screw to about 2 turns from all the way in and seeing where it idles. It will probably be very high. Then turn the rod clockwise until it idles normally. Keep in mind that the flat side of the metering rod must face the engine side of the carb. You make adjustments by threading it into the slide, then reorient it by pushing it into the slide and turning. If that doesn’t work, the bike definitely has an air leak. Good luck and definitely reach out to lectron if you need more help!
And that would be correct if it was a real bog. Is it though? It really sounds like a sputtering sound to me. Listen again. Not trying to start trouble, my ears just tell me the other way.
@@Realryancurry it’s 100% a lean bog. It gets worse as he gives it more throttle, sounds hollow, and the engine only recovers if he lets off. BeRAD has a good video where he purposely tunes a carb too rich and too lean that is worth watching
I have the Lectron pro on my 2024 yz250x and I have called and been talking to nick and hunter and I can’t get a straight answer out of them on how to get it running properly
Had the same issue with my sons rm85. Pulled the carb, cleaned all the crud out and she was good to go. Yay for a new bike project! I just picked up an 84 200x atc myself
I had the same exact problem with my first 85. It was a 2004 cr 85 that would not run right at all. Put 3 different carburetors and stator and whole new engine and it didn’t run right.
Lectrons are great carbs IF you know what you are doing with them. Based upon the other issues you have found, I would not be surprised if the metering rod length is all whacked out. Contact Lectron and they will give you the starting length for the rod. After that, check the float heights as someone else has already stated, getting the carb back to baseline will be the first step.
I always have to laugh when I imagine your girlfriend doing some housework or especially speaking with someone on her phone and at once she hears a fricking YZ 250 start and rev in the garage🤣 Amazing Videos Kincade!
I ended up picking up a 1995 yz125 a couple weeks ago. The seller had done a top end in 2018 and supposedly has put maybe 20 hours on it. It had some weird hot start problems, so I started to take things apart to look for the problem. Turns out there's scoring on the piston and it probable needs another top end. Because it is not needed. pay as much as you want,--for things that are not needed on a dirt bike. Cost keeps people from riding, and buying stuff. It is a dirt bike that a kid used to be able to buy---or the record books would be much different in the 70's and 80's, which would make the rest of you even slower that the amateur racers today. :). on my yz125 i dumped it hard in water and filled it with water. after clearing it of all water and changed the air filter i didnt screw on the air filter when i went to kick it over and it had a fuck ton of air flow. it made the same sound this 250 made. only difference i can think of was mine didnt bog down that hard in neutral only when i tried to ride it. (air filter was basically half way off) so maybe by chance its getting way to much airflow and is just killing thwe bike when you rev it.
New plastic. The Batman school of art plastic did not hit the YZ250 2-stroke until 2015. That is why I cut off all the batman arrow heads and points, removed the transformer cartoon front fender, replaced with a 2014 front fender (yes I did have to mill in the proper hole locations), so my bike does not look like some abstract art (function-less and no meaning), from a "Speed Racer" cartoon (Late 60's/early 70's cartoon). The change to the ugly plastic for the YZ 2-strokes is in 2015. You guys should wear a cape, and complete the artistic look into nothing related to function. :)
I also could not stand my 2019 YZ 250 front number plate, that looks like the arm shield for the God Of Thor. So I went a bit silly myself, because it made me laugh. Back in my HS days, we had a machine shop in HS, (that was considered the thing for dumb kids,---as we created the factories that got those losers out of poverty too). Yes, I personally know the guy making all the Indian Motorcycle fenders and tanks in Michigan, (with other customers stuff). He did not study arts and crafts, race relations or gender studies in school. But he would be one heck of a good teacher---not found today. They never hired 35 people and got them out of poverty. We did that with our freedom---what is left iof it (recreational industries mostly, but still constrained and dictated by the state,--like the 4-stroke forced on the industry by the EPA. On yea. I forgot about the number plate replacement. it took me quite some time to figure out how to mount it, (I have a little machine shop, made my own mounts from billet aluminum.). I could not find a 1979-ish YZ font number plate that I liked that looked authentic for that time. And i did not have a good piece of plastic to make my own. I put a 175 gram Frisbee on the triples, and started laughing. So I mounted it (finally. More time into it than the engine and suspension). I even made it "quick release" with no tools needed,--in case anybody needs a Frisbee during a trail break. :) My YZ is now ----Perfect, from engine power delivery (I modify 2-stroke engines for a living), to bike lowering, and plastic thsat did not come from the Batman school of art. :) Wanna try to beat me on a flat corner on a modern bike? You have to be a better rider to do that to match me, and lot better rider to do better.
I dont know if this helps but I have an 04 yz125 with a lectron and from time to time it will bog out when given throttle from idle. So I’m interested to see what the problem is and how you resolve it. Love your videos and keep up the good content 🤙
On that old of a bike, or even if ridden a lot in 5 years, we often think the cylinder plating is still good. 5 years of a lot of summer riding, (5 piston and ring changes for myself), is a about the max for the best plating. And not all bikes have the best plating.
I know that "vintage" guy on YT, would not replace every beating in the einge on the old bikes, and check the crank rod play for a very possible crank rebuild, (about 3-4 years of a lot of use). I would.
12:02 That plating has about 3 good years of riding on it. (4 days a week in my estimation), that I can see from that angle, and i still see cross hatch. Got lucky. :)
I’ve got a question: when you have time could you go through the most used tools or some of the tools that have saved you from time and time. Looking at starting to do this for a hobby as I enjoy a project as well.
I think I would like the steel frame better than my 2019 YZ 2-stroke aluminum frame. The aluminum frme transmits more engine vibration to the hands, and I have a bit of a hand numbing problem in my 60 year old age. I have never seen my levers bounce so much from the engine idling with no fingers on the levers.
Plus, the new bikes are too tall. MXA would have destroyed it in the 80's and 90's, and it is taller than the KTM's it complained about back then. Need a berm to turn well? :)
Sounds good, but very ridh. The YZ's are very rich stock. MXA says it is god, but i am on the top clip on the needle. A Lectron carb runs rich? (I never tied one, but don't need one for my pretty constant air quality with a lack of elevation change and the knowledge to jet a Carb well. When it is jetted well--there is very little smoke, (pretty much just for start up, and does not last long), and no oil mess around the pipe. I say you may be missing 2 hp.
You had the choke on on the bit I saw,---at the time. But still sounds like a fuel delivery problem as the slide opens, (bogging). If it were going rich, (and bog), it would smoke more there. Need 3 things to run. Good spark at the right time, enough compression, and the fuel/air mixed at a good ratio at any rpm. You have it at a carb problem for sure.
Check the needle. Or the jetting. Since its not a original pipe and the previous owner wasent the brightest mechanic and defenetly did something wrong to the needle/jetting.
I’m in need of help my dirt bike 2019 KX 250f front break is working and will stop me but it’s super easy to pull it to it goes right to the bar we have bleed them a lot
kincade what could be wrong with my Sherco Sef-r 250? i just changed the shift return spring and after that the gears didn't go in easily. I just thought it might be because it didn't have oil in it, but after i putted the oil in and shifted in to second it wouldn't shift lower or higher. I would assume that something is wrong with the shift shaft or with my wrenching.
I got a 1998 yz400f the other day. Can anyone give me any recommendations for this? When I kick, doing my slow kicks to get it in tdc, occasionally it will stick all the way down. If I give it a little tap it springs right back up. I barely have to do anything to un stick it. Seems like maybe just a worn spring?
Question, I have an 03 yz250 that was fully rebuild top to bottom by past owner. Went on a few rides and everything was mint. Got the carb redone for my mountain riding. Went back out and started to notice that every time I would hit washouts or just huge dips the bike will bog down until I get back on flat ground. Has all the power on flat road but once it hits bumps it bogs down Hella. Thinking it was the carb, I got it done about 3 to 4 more times with different float hight and different jets but still same issue. Do you think maybe electrical? Something that doesn't like bumps/getting hit around... please help
That’s an interesting one… does sound electrical. I had an issue like that on a DRZ400. On bumps, the kickstand sensor would engage and momentarily try to kill the bike. YZs don’t have anything like that, but I’d probably be checking the kill switch.
BeRAD has a video on how to tune the lectron carb: th-cam.com/video/Pz4JF-NSHho/w-d-xo.htmlsi=lXKCeLkukBY2Ubc7 Love the bike, mines a 99, wish id have gotten a slightly newer one for the updated plastics, but she’s nice regardless. Mine also has a lectron, his video helped me out huge.
I am not a fan of those carbs. They're too finicky in my opinion. Also, you never know if the previous owner messed with the card so I would just take it out to a full clean and break down and make sure everything is working right. Honestly if it was me, I would put in a keihin carburetor and move on with my life knowing that I'd be able to sleep peacefully at night. 🤣🤣🤣
If that guy you bought it from put on the carb,---it is messed up. :) Thank your lucky stars that he did not start it with that clutch set up. Gear Teeth would be missing, but at least the low oil volume would not have carried the teeth fragments into the rest of the tyranny. :)
I don’t think that is a “bog”, it’s blubbering/ sputtering (to rich). Or that’s what it sounds like to me. I saw Lectron guys comment, I disagree in my interpretation of that sound
I am very happy you do not post a vid that asks the question, "Will it run?". That totally depends on the skill of the maker of the vid. So the answer is, "Yes, it will run, if you can get parts and know what you are doing.". Stupid question,---if you know what you are doing.

How do you start doing this? Picking up bikes and buying progressively worse ones as you go or the other way around?
It’s been a long journey! I’ve got stories regarding my first projects on my Instagram and you can check out the oldest build videos as well.
Check the needle. Or the jetting. Since its not a original pipe and the previous owner wasent the brightest mechanic and defenetly did something wrong to the needle/jetting.
It’s got a lectron so theoretically this wouldnt be a problem but it could possibly use a different metering rod

My 125 had same problem and it was Cdi box
These any good?
my yz125 used to do the same thing. it was the power valve
it would get super clogged after abt an hour of riding
I had crank seals cause a bog like that
I’m in need of help my dirt bike 2019 KX 250f front break is working and will stop me but it’s super easy to pull it to it goes right to the bar we have bleed them a lot
Carb clean
kincade what could be wrong with my Sherco Sef-r 250? i just changed the shift return spring and after that the gears didn't go in easily. I just thought it might be because it didn't have oil in it, but after i putted the oil in and shifted in to second it wouldn't shift lower or higher. I would assume that something is wrong with the shift shaft or with my wrenching.
Let's be real, we never stop doing questionable things with bikes over the years.
Kincade, 2002? Kicker looks like an 01 just curious I own an 02
I’ve had 2 comments on this now. Ran the VIN, says ‘02. Not sure if that’s incorrect or someone maybe put the wrong kicker on it?
sounds like it runs too lean when you start giving it trottle.
ive never had my hands on a lectron but maybe try moving the needle up
That’s a rich bog a lean bog would cut out like he shut the motor off
Love the videos keep it up
Had the same problem with my yz125 with a lectron tried to contact them but they left me hanging and the bike run like crap don’t know what to do
i hat that choking problem on my apn 6
You might have hooked up the throttle backwards
Some carburator jet problems :)
bdw any advise how to get my parents to let me buy a dirt bike?
That sounds like a lean bog so maybe a carb issue?
I got a 1998 yz400f the other day. Can anyone give me any recommendations for this? When I kick, doing my slow kicks to get it in tdc, occasionally it will stick all the way down. If I give it a little tap it springs right back up. I barely have to do anything to un stick it. Seems like maybe just a worn spring?
The main jet is to high i had the samme issue
Check the reeds
BeRAD has a video on how to tune the lectron carb:

Love the bike, mines a 99, wish id have gotten a slightly newer one for the updated plastics, but she’s nice regardless. Mine also has a lectron, his video helped me out huge.
Either too lean on the rod or rod facing wrong direction just happens to me
Hello . Im from Philippines 🇵🇭. And i am dreaming a dirt bike too 😢. I hope i win someday ❤
Probably running lean from poor tuning or because of gunk in the carb.
Them lectrons are more pain then they are worth, and you loose power. A well jetted stock carb has more everywhere
If that guy you bought it from put on the carb,---it is messed up. :)
Thank your lucky stars that he did not start it with that clutch set up. Gear Teeth would be missing, but at least the low oil volume would not have carried the teeth fragments into the rest of the tyranny. :)
One of your carb jets is clogged
I think you spelled your last name wrong.. it's spelled pavič/ć ✌️😃
Cracked reeds can cause that
I don’t think that is a “bog”, it’s blubbering/ sputtering (to rich). Or that’s what it sounds like to me. I saw Lectron guys comment, I disagree in my interpretation of that sound
Sounds like an ignition issue
Clean the carb
check the needle Hight for the yz250
It doesn’t have a needle
That rear brake sloppy as hell
I am very happy you do not post a vid that asks the question, "Will it run?". That totally depends on the skill of the maker of the vid. So the answer is, "Yes, it will run, if you can get parts and know what you are doing.". Stupid question,---if you know what you are doing.
