    Hi Professor,
    THE EXPLANATION: of why all these brands have the same design is two words PRIVATE LABELLING. In the manufacturing industry a lot of companies don't own the factories that produce the boxes, instead they hire and outsource factories that do it for them. At these factories they simply stamp the logo and make simple adjustments like colour and material choices, to differentiate essentially the same product they are making for many brands. This is a common practice. Its not something frowned upon either, its just cost efficient and more productive. So its basically up to the company to decide if the factory uses higher quality products or not, and thats how you end up with 3 or more of the same designs with varying quality. :)

    That terrible magnet hold on the Dex boxes would drop the grade down much further for me personally. It's a complete deal breaker. Not that I throw deck boxes around like a crazy person on the regular, but great aesthetics and velvet interior won't mean much the one time an accidental drop happens and your cards are everywhere. Likely everywhere on a surface that is polar opposite to that of velvet, haha.

      Eclipto14 Yeah that would be a good solution, but when you buy a product, you should expect it to function the way it was designed to do so

      Eric Huckaby Maybe their second line will include a simple clasp. (Seriously, why don't more deck boxes use something like a horn button or a latch to secure the box?)

    • @kelm102
      @kelm102 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Eric Huckaby Why not just cut a small hole in the inside of the lid and put a rare earth magnet in it. They're small enough that people use them with Warhammer 40k models and they hold all of the limbs and such together just fine.

    • @girthpapi
      @girthpapi 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I mean, sure, there are workarounds, but I shouldn't have to make modifications to a product to make it work, especially when there are more practical options already available. I wouldn't even trust myself cutting into the interior of this thing, haha. And a rubber band defeats the purpose of the sleek design, it would just look tacky. As much as I want to like these boxes, it's just not as practical or safe as some of the other deck box options. (Boxes that are much lower graded on the list, too, surprisingly.)

    I'm a huge fan of dex protection products now after picking some up in Vegas, I use a ultra pro zip up carry case to carry my decks in and it hols the small dex protection boxes perfectly and I'm looking forward to eventually putting all my decks in those boxes. Thanks for the review!

    I've always enjoyed watching your reviews, and you've helped me settle on my Dragon Shield Matte sleeve choice after the KMC debacle. Recently my pet EDH deck got some tokens, placing it in the hyper awkward ~115-120 Dragon Shield Matte double-sleeved range.. and once again, your backlog of reviews comes to the rescue, pointing me towards the Dex Protection Medium. The python exterior may be garish, but it was on sale for a pittance at a UK vendor for some reason. Thank you so much for all your work!

    i bought a large dex protection box at Grand Prix Las Vegas, and i think it's the best 30 dollars i've ever spent. not only is the deckbox sturdy, and very, very nice to look at and hold, it's also the best to hold a commander deck and my standard deck plus sideboard, and general transportation of other random cards too.
    overall, i'm confident that the dex protection boxes will make their way into A territory. personally, i perfer these to almost everything besides fully custom ones. the magnet on this one i bought is quite sturdy and quite strong, and has not fallen out on me once. The professor's review on these boxes and such high praise for a start up company, reinforces the notion of recommending these boxes to fellow players.

    Hey Professor I know you did a review on carrying cases like the Dragon Egg and just a normal backpack, but is there anything else that can be use. Maybe something more design for Magic like the Dragon Egg but has more space... a lot more. After going to GP Vegas I ended up having to make multiple trips to my car to drop of all the things I got and all of the different decks I ended up bringing and making for each of the different events. But I was worried about my new stuff being baked by the Vegas heat while I played. I ended up bring both my Dragon Egg and a Backpack and I still had to drop things off, maybe I should just buy less....

    I just bought 2 Large Dex Protection cases this weekend at GP Oakland, I don't know if they improved their original line, or what, but the magnets in the case are much stronger than this video implies, the magnets are strong enough that I even had difficulty trying to open the box once. (Didn't want to handle the beautiful case too roughly)

    Professor, would you please compare the pair of deckboxes you have recently reviewed - I mean a Large Dex Protection box and a Twin Flip'n'Tray Guard Protection box. I've got two questions about them:
    1. You had problems with Twin Flip'n'Tray when trying to take your cards out of the non-tray compartment. But you haven't mentioned anything similar when reviewing Large Dex protection box. Have you managed to take the same amount of cards out of it without any difficulties even despite the lack of deck trays?
    2. You said that Twin Flip'n'Tray thing was too bulky. Could you possibly write if the Large Dex Protection box makes better use of its size.
    Thank you for reading this=))

  • @brianwise5850
    @brianwise5850 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Here is a question, professor, with those dex protector boxes from this video. I know at craft stores I can get ahold of a Velcro circle that I could put onto the box to add some strength to keep it closed. Do you think that this might be a suitable solution to fix the problem until they improve the magnets in the box. Or perhaps taking the box apart and replacing the magnets would be better. I am in agreement with the size of space inside being very important, as a commander player I see real value there in the amount of space available for a deck and sideboard.

      Paul Nguyen I'd also recommend the Ultra pro satin tower.
      It fits an entire double sleeved commander deck with room for tokens and has a bottom compartment to store dice. It also looks really sleek and it's decently priced.
      It's never come loose on me and the top and bottom have never accidentally fallen off and i own two, one of which i've had for like a year and half. Very sturdy and doesn't take up too much room.
      I also bought one after watching TCC's review. :)

    Professor, I was browsing today at my LGS and I found a, ugh, I really don't wan't to say this, a deck box that came with card sleeves manufactured by Least Protection. I bought it just for fun and found that it came with 100 standard least protection quality sleeves but also 100 perfect size sleeves. I tried these out and found that they were of excellent quality. If you would please try to find this item and review it, that would be great! To be honest, I think I like these better that KMCs. They slide on to your cards much easier and have an overall better feel and fit than the KMCs. Thank you for taking your time to read this and I am very sorry that I am asking you to purchase merch from Least Protection. Please forgive me!

    Can you clarify how many cards the medium Dex Protection box holds? The text in the video says 110+ cards in the main compartment and another 15+ in the smaller one, while your voiceover indicates the smaller compartment can actually hold 25+ cards. Dex Protection's site says the main compartment holds 120+ cards, with no mention of the secondary storage. Which numbers are correct?

    Ah good, my deck boxing fix has been satiated. Also, God bless companies that say "Hey that guy's design works. Let's do that, but instead, let's use much cheaper material and sell it at the same price!" Those Time Walkers actually look really nice. Do they smell like real leather Professor?
    My suggestion to Dex is put the opening on the bottom so it covers three squares instead of two. It makes it a bit weirder than normal to open, but I think it would make it all but impossible to open it accidentally. Or, you know, use a better magnet.
    Also, I had a question that I don't think has been asked. Who did your logo?

    When I heard you saying that the pink box holds 100+ double sleeved cards I was like: OMG ... that's what I'm looking for since the beginning.
    And then there came the magnets. So disappointing.
    But I got an idea:
    Professor ... why don't you design boxes? Yeah I know, you're time is limited but I would totally back a kickstarter project when I knew that one of the most informed players is building them cause he (which is you, Professor) knows what he's talking about and he knows where the weak spots are...

    I think that the shake testing for the tandem deckbox is somewhat flawed. What I'd be concerned about is the box falling off a table, out of my hands, or out of my bag, and most importantly, hitting the ground and falling open, and I'm not sure that aggressively shaking properly conveys that effect.

    Where can you get a Flip N Tray box for Playmat? I asked on the video that showed it off the only thing I can find online says Pre-Order and is their a cheaper version of it or just another brand that has a box like it?

    Ultra Pro Shadowmoor deckboxes used to be the best. I still use mine, and it holds 75 cards. Plus it looks cool. good luck finding these new under $20 though.

    I'm used to transport my cards in the same backpack as my electronic devices (tablet, ebook reader, laptop, mobile phone). Do you know if this could become a problem with a magnetic latch?

    i think they might have seen your video professor, because i just picked up two of the dex boxes from my lgs and the magnets are ridiculously strong. I asked the store owner to test them out before the buy and they still stay closed after very harsh shaking. What would you rate them now?

    I've been looking for a box to hold 110 double sleeved cards and nothing else, I think I'll probably get myself a small Dex now.

    Hey professor,
    Of the deckboxes you've reviewed, which among them are capable of holding a TRIPLE sleeved 75 card deck? I triple sleeve some of my more valuable decks, and I find that with the added width and height they don't fit into the deck boxes I have.

    That dex magnetic latch issue can be fixed. I can just get velcro from a big box store and fix it that way.

    I don't get what the big fuss about tokens are...
    I just use an extra deck and put the cards upside down.
    Functions perfectly as tokens and 1/1 counters

    I hope Dex Protection fixes that magnet problem. They're really looking like a fine product for that price point.

    I hope someone at Dex sees this and fixes those magnets. They look fantastic and they look like they have a better card storage to size ratio than my BCW cardboard boxes.

    Does anyone have any recommendations for carrying around 5 decks at a time. Or should I just invest in 5 Ultra Pro Satin Towers and a book bag? Or should I get three of the boxes that hold two decks, and have room to expand towards another?
