Thanks a million Professor! For anyone who has questions, feel free to ask me here or on etsy. I originally built the first box for my friend who has many vintage decks and needed something more protective than just a plastic box. The box is very stout and a nice addition to any magic players card storage solution.
+Shivam Bhatt Absolutely not, if you would like a different top just let me know and I'm pretty sure I can make it whatever you would like. Something pretty like walnut or how about some more cedar! Just let me know what you would like or the flavor and I can suggest some woods.
these are gorgeous, watching your channel actually inspired me to make my own wooden case with my dad. It is made of mahogany, hold around 12 decks using the inner lid as a binder for trades and turned out very nice for our first attempt, but far from perfect. I know these pieces albeit pretty expensive are worth every penny. You have to earn the experience necessary to build something that well with your hands. great show!
I have a custom deck box from Wyrmwood, African Blackwood inlayed with Malachite. I can attest that Wyrmwood has excellent customer service and is very devoted to making what you want in a deck box happen.
Beautiful pieces of wood-craftsmanship. I enjoy this kind of video. I am now even more inspired to start making some things of wood myself than i already was before the video.
Hmm... You have a good point. I would honestly love a good cedar deck box that can contain my dice in it as well as comfortably (and somewhat loosely) fit a double sleeved 75 card deck with tokens. I absolutely love the smell of cedar. This Cain fellow may be worth getting into contact with!
Thank you for the info. My shop makes boxes, many from cedar, and this opens a whole new clientele. The red cedar boxes are always left unfinished and we use many domestic and exotic hardwoods.
What instrument(s) do you play, i play Trombone and Piano; however, being in a different bands for a long time I could easily play percussion and sorta trumpet. Also i feel your pain with magic and music.
Great video. I am a woodworker and my son asked me to make him a box for his cards so I was looking for ideas. The artists whose work you show are clearly at the top of their game. By the way Padauk is pronounced “pah-dook” and wenge is generally pronounced “wengay” by woodworkers.
I saw the humidor one and was like, "xBeau makes those. I would buy from him before I buy from this guy..." Then I saw it was xBeau and felt like a douche :D.
As an addition to the video - On custom woods: Cocobolo is probably the best wood available. It is the most desirable wood for making sword and knife handles. A wood that takes the abuse of sword and knife handles is what I'd want my box made of...plus, it's beautiful!
It’s my absolute favorite to work with personally, but it is a synthesizer, which makes it dicey to work with, especially since it actually smells rather nice when it burns/is sanded. It’s also an expensive wood. But I agree, it’s a beautiful, hardy wood.
As a cigar smoker/hobbyist/what I do for a living AND a magic player, I feel like I should point out that what you said about the danger of using a cigar humidor is false. Cigar humidors from reputable manufactures are hand made with excellent materials and craftsmanship, and do not have issues with resins or sap. If they did, they wouldn't be any good for keeping cigars either, as that would ruin your cigars. Keep in mind cigar humidors use kiln dried Spanish cedar, specifically to make this a non-issue for your cigars. Serious cigar smokers and collectors are generally just as meticulous with their collection as serious card collectors. I would actually recommend using a cigar humidor instead of the humidor you showed, as a humidor made for cigars will provide a much better seal than just that flat lid with no lip. Better seal means more reliable humidity control. Keep in mind the operative words "reputable manufacturer", as cheaply made humidors will not seal and may not use kiln dried Spanish cedar.
These videos have helped me make up my mind on deck boxes. I now use exclusively Ultra Pro basic deck boxes for any deck I build, until the deck proves itself and becomes something I want to take to events. Those decks then move up to Dex Protection boxes, of which I have 5, (two for commander, three for modern). These are my prized decks. Some day I hope to be able to bling out these decks and when I do I'll be adding something truly special, like a Wyrmwood or Aaron Cain custom box to my wish-list... but damn this hobby has got expensive now.
as an amateur woodworker I relate the costs on this with a guitar made by a luthier. costly compared with a mass produced guitar, but custom fitted, a lot more of attention in details and many times more beautiful and unique.
+nafixisntright well, that is just my opinion, a guitar or deckbox or anything made just by yourself and with the materials you want it's something you cannot find on all the providers.
I think you'll need some handcrafted special dice for that epic $1000 box. There's a store near where I used to live that sold remarkable dices in some really cool materials. Just some of the D6s there went for $100 a piece.
I don't know if you're a stickler for pronunciation but Neo-DIM-ium for the magnets. Nice to see such fine products and craftsmanship in today's era of plastics.
Sorry to say it, but although wyrmwood boxes are amazing quality on the wood side, they are absolutely screwing over customers on the engraving. I know because I own a high quality laser engraver. Charging 100 dollars for an image engraved means I'd only need 30 customers with that request to pay off the engraver. The engraving takes about 30 minutes and there's nothing 'hand crafted' about it, all done by machine.
Cool dude, i am sure you also own a company and throw out these boxes for like 50$ while being able to make a living of it? No? Guessed so. At least where i am from, a "normal" woodcrafter costs the company ~40€ an hour, so if you only look at this, you have to build this whole thing in 5 hours only to get even! And then there are all the other costs: Maintenance of the machines/tools, taxes, storage costs, electricity, planning and design of the objects, marketing, materials, etc etc etc. Maybe 200$ is a little expensive, but it depends a lot on how the company is set up. Besides that, i am sure that they made the engraving more expensive so they can reduce the price on the normal boxes, meaning regular stuff might even be close of being too cheap to actually make profit. If anything is a ripoff, its every single card which costs more then a few cents ;)
I bought an Aaron cain Mirage East Indian Rosewood and Fire Maple windowless 100 double sleeved card Dice and Deck Vault because of your recommendation and i must say your Grade for his work was perfect and justified. I just wanted to add my own experience with it and to be completely honest gloat. The only thing that might be annoted is that the lid is fraction too tight and doesnt close very smoothly. It closes and very tightly so, but you have to wigglle it a bit on the last quarter inch on the deck side and on the last five millimeters on the dice side. I am sure that will solve itself as soon as i have used it for a while. On the postive side there is to say that you cant properly see the exquisty of the craftmanship of the box in a video you have to hold it in your hand. It is just astoundingly beatifull.
I can't say enough about getting these kinds of boxes/accessories. The main reason is that craftsmen like the above are so few and far between and the quality is typically amazing. Support your local craftsman and get one of these amazing boxes. :) (I personally have a deck box and what I call my "draft box" from Aaron Cain. I always get compliments on them and they're holding up really well.
If you don’t mind me asking, how long ago was it purchased? (Relevancy being that Brazilian rosewood is currently difficult to access due to high rates of illegal trafficking endangering the trees)
Thanks for the review, got Cain's Brochure and have been looking through it trying to pick something... just absolutely gorgeous looking material, and for the price of a booster box, you can get a deck box that will last longer than you'll probably play MTG. Can't beat that.
This was great information for a card collector that is also a woodworker. I am looking for the wooden storage system that I can build myself. Thank you for this video.
I just got my deck vault from Aaron Cain for my EDH Selesnya Enchantment Deck and wow is it awesome...It was shipped to me SUPER fast. Thanks for the recommendation Prof. I definitely trust your reviews.
I found the sweetspot with ultimate guard’s flip’n tray. 100+ double sleeved cards, perfect protection, luxurious microfiber and xenoskin. It’s not unique or personalized, but it can stand heavy transport and only cost 25 bucks. I’m not ashemed to put my legacy deck in it.
I can't believe how amazing my custom Aaron Cain custom deck box is. I wouldn't have known about this unless the Professor made this video. Thank you very much Professor and thank you again Aaron Cain! -mM
at first I thought "50-100+ for a box is insane" but you make a good point. I built my modern eldrazi deck over a few years since I couldn't afford to buy it altogether at once, and it's overall worth 7-800 dollars so it really wouldn't make sense for me to keep such valuable cards in cheap storage
I'm one of those people who spent way too much on my legacy deck, but there's nothing quite like the feeling of using your "signature deck" during FNM at the table top. Even if it took 10 years and $4000+ :))))))
The xbeau humidor is beautiful. I got an xbeau deck box, and it was beautifully and artfully crafted, however be aware that if shipped to a dryer state/country, they will warp (as in the way a guitar will). This may (or may not) affect the seal of the humidor, but just as a side note, be advised. Still, arguably one of the best objects on the market.
I have an Aaron Cain for my Affinity deck! Black Walnut, standard top-loader. It's awesome. It's a reeaaaaalllllyyyyy tight fit on the cards though, and I single sleeve. I might move my favorite pauper deck into the Walnut, and spring for another deck with room for double sleeving.
Reminds me of when I was new to Magic and carried a 5 color Tower of Power deck in a cigar box. It worked very well until I moved on to other stuff for decks.
just ordered an aaron cain, one of the absolute finest customer experiences I've had! Unbelievable that he's not charging three, even four times the amount.
Man, I would so love a custom wooden deck box for my Commander someday. It's expensive, but really looks like it's worth it with that amazing quality. Someday.
Excellent deck boxes and review! Also best review of wooden products you've done in my opinion, naming the wood type etc... ontop of your usual review formula. Now to save up for one of these deck boxes myself...
I'm surprised I haven't heard yet (unless I've missed it somewhere) a review for the Ultra-Pro clear plastic deck cases! I got some of the 150's myself and I was really surprised with how delicious they make my decks look! sure they can open if you hold it by the lid, which can damage the case if it falls, but considering I get 'em for 2 bucks and they look like such good quality, I figured they'd be a good thing to take at least a brief review of!
Awesome boxes shown here. I know it's been years since this video BUT: the "correct" pronunciation or phonetics for the wood species are as follow: Padauk (6:49) - pa-duke (like duchess or duke or Dukes of Harzards lol) wenge (7:29) - when-gay (no example needed here) I'm definitely going to gather some ideas and make a pokemon card holder for my son. He's been asking me for one since he first got 1 card pack of 6 cards lmao. He now has about 30/40 so why not. It's not a lot but then again he just started to get into them 2 weeks ago. Thanks for this video
I got a long 2 column cassette tape box from my grandparents house just so happens to hold my double sleeved cube along with the basic lands AND all the dice needed. Best part is my Grandfathers initials are on it JVH and my initials are JNH pretty close huh hehe. No hydro meter though haha.
It honestly boggles my mind how good quality those are, I'm so used to seeing crappy Ultra-Pro top loaders and these just blow my mind. Sucks I can't afford them though :3
Not to be a grump about it, but the wood names are pronounced a little different than said in the video: Wenge: When-gey Padauk: Peh-dowk Keep bringing the cool products prof!
I think i might get an Aaron Cain, 80 double sleeve deck box with flocking after watching this video. I have a nice 93/94 deck that needs a new home. :)
I have a $1200 Modern deck and a couple of $600 ones but this is a little too rich for my tastes. Might be funny to have one and just have a couple of pauper decks inside it. I understand some people like good craftsmanship but yea I'm happy with my Dragon Shield Deckbox, which I've dropped multiple times on cement/tiles and it barely has any marks or anything. If I dropped one of these my heart would probably burst out of my chest.
Oddly enough that's what I use. Bought a rather large one while I was in the Marine Corps. Originally housed my laptop, and two 3tb hard drives. Then after I got out, my duty gun ammo and magazines. Now it serves as the perfect case for my decks. Holds 15 legion deck boxes, and a large section where I keep rares, fetch lands, tokens, dice, and beads. Best part about a pelican box is the fact you can order new pick and pluck foam. If I need to repurpose the box again, or go back to an old use, I just switch the foam out.
+Bob Bobber Bobbeng Bobbington of Bobs oh my commentary was certainly not meant to be argumentative or derisive to the professor. More so a great surprise at the lengths the professor went to.
+GreenSscythe It's pretty darn important to talk about the wood you'll use when storing cards. Exotic woods while pretty are full of lots of oils, and I would be really cautious about those if I was storing my dual lands in there. Wood much like the cardboard we play with, all likes to be happy and nothing makes cards more happy that consistent and predictable humidity when stored.
I love watching these videos even though I don't collect the cards. I wish I lived in an area where the community excepts this, so i'm limited to the computer game. :(
coming from a cigar smoker who maintains a humidor. do not get this humidor deck box unless you are willing to monitor your humidity levels at least every few days. the reason, the area were the hydrometer is acts a point of weakness. it will leach or let out humidity. Just a fair warning. Also, you CANNOT just get it and store your cards. humidors have cedar inside normally and to be able to maintain the humidity levels you need to hone it first. so make sure you learn how to this or your deck box could be dirty at levels of 65+.
+misanthrope4life Totally, the hardest part is getting the initial humidity to stabilize and keeping the lid closed as much as possible as not to keep resetting the humidity in the box. I envisioned this box being on a deck or in a place folks are checking so the gauge is pretty good for that. Shipped boxes will have the gauge epoxied into the lid so that leeching should be fairly minimal. There isn't a rubber seal around the rim or anything like that, but even where I live near the ocean, it's totally possible to maintain a specific humidity assuming you're not opening the box everyday.
+Steve L Search amazon for "Boveda 49% RH Two-Way Humidity Control", these are the best of the best for set it and forget it humidity control. The are really amazing.
+Steve L I'd imagine where you live also plays a large part in the equation as well. When I lived in Colorado the humidity very low and usually meant I needed to add humidity but now that I'm in San Francisco, I have the opposite issue. It's going to be a matter of just keeping an eye on the humidity until the box can normalize. If you're already double sleeving and not living on a house boat, you're probably going to be ok.
Yea, and an Audi is nicer than a Honda. I wouldn't include these products on your grade sheet, its not a fair comparison to other products that are designed for affordable, everyday gaming use.
Thanks for another great video! Can you perform a shake test of the Leopardwood/Holly Sideloading Dice and Deck Vault and post it? I would like to see if the cards and dice fall out before I purchase one. Thanks
+Glen Wolter "I would rather live a life of creativity, exploration and imagination than allow myself to become stagnant in a well of conformity. Once you understand the rules and mechanics of language you can bend and break them, reinvent them to suit the spirit of what you seek to express. Also, it's a Doctor Who quote." --The Professor
Hey prof, I alway wonder why when you test the durably of deck boxes you don't use those worthless double sided promotional cards that way you can use more realistic test such as dropping it from a table or putting it in a backpack with other things that might crush it. That way we can see more realistic durability tests and you don't have to endanger your precious cards.
+Tolarian Community College Thank you too as well. By the way you just helped a fellow Merfolk player spruce up his Magic gear for them. Take care Professor
Thanks a million Professor! For anyone who has questions, feel free to ask me here or on etsy. I originally built the first box for my friend who has many vintage decks and needed something more protective than just a plastic box. The box is very stout and a nice addition to any magic players card storage solution.
+xBeau Gaming these look amazing! does the humidor have to have a striped top?
+Shivam Bhatt Absolutely not, if you would like a different top just let me know and I'm pretty sure I can make it whatever you would like. Something pretty like walnut or how about some more cedar! Just let me know what you would like or the flavor and I can suggest some woods.
+Antonio Barros if you're cool paying the actual shipping cost, then shouldn't be an issue. I have no clue the cost but drop me a message on etsy
1) Do you still offer the Humidor? 2) Does it only protect foils from curling, or can it reverse the damage curled foils have already experienced?
these are gorgeous, watching your channel actually inspired me to make my own wooden case with my dad. It is made of mahogany, hold around 12 decks using the inner lid as a binder for trades and turned out very nice for our first attempt, but far from perfect. I know these pieces albeit pretty expensive are worth every penny. You have to earn the experience necessary to build something that well with your hands. great show!

Beautiful pieces of wood-craftsmanship. I enjoy this kind of video. I am now even more inspired to start making some things of wood myself than i already was before the video.
When I was young I stored my cards in my grandpa's cigar box. That's why my mirrodin/dissension/kamigawas smell like tobacco XD
Hmm... You have a good point. I would honestly love a good cedar deck box that can contain my dice in it as well as comfortably (and somewhat loosely) fit a double sleeved 75 card deck with tokens. I absolutely love the smell of cedar. This Cain fellow may be worth getting into contact with!
Hygrometer, with a g. A Hydrometer with a d measures the gravity of a liquid, often used in beer and winemaking.
Thank you for the info. My shop makes boxes, many from cedar, and this opens a whole new clientele. The red cedar boxes are always left unfinished and we use many domestic and exotic hardwoods.
Oh the struggles of being a musician AND a magic player, do I want this $500 Fender Strat or the Wurmwood custom deck box?
+William Gonyea Save up for a gibson delux :p
+Blue Gaming Studio* delux
Definitely the Strat.
(Accidental double-post!)

Whywouldi Givemyrealname lol why did it take so long to see this comment :)
@@xBeauGaming good question
I feel like i would be happy simply collecting boxes rather than the actual cards despite loving the game xD

Those are very fancy boxes for a dirty Paper Pauper player as myself... :P
I’m really happy Boulders exist. So cheap, so useful.
These boxes are simply amazing. The fact that wood can be shaped into such intricate and beautiful designs on such sublime boxes is astonishing.
As a cigar smoker/hobbyist/what I do for a living AND a magic player, I feel like I should point out that what you said about the danger of using a cigar humidor is false. Beautiful products. Can wait to get a custom deck one day.
Good video tolarian you got me into ultimate guard deck boxes
I know this is silly but my eyes light up with joy and awe whenever I see there's a new deck box video!!!!!!
Mine do on any video on this channel
High class! I'd get the Aaron Cain ones, if only for affordability. But they're all marvelous!
That mother of pearl box is amazing. These are all great, but that one just jumped out at me.
as a soon-to-be museum professional, you're speaking my language! if only i had the money right now...
Awesome boxes shown here. I know it's been years since this video BUT:
the "correct" pronunciation or phonetics for the wood species are as follow:
Padauk (6:49) - pa-duke (like duchess or duke or Dukes of Harzards lol)
wenge (7:29) - when-gay (no example needed here)
I'm definitely going to gather some ideas and make a pokemon card holder for my son.
Not to be a grump about it, but the wood names are pronounced a little different than said in the video:
Wenge: When-gey
Padauk: Peh-dowk
Keep bringing the cool products prof!
"Extremely very not good" is my my favorite thing ever said by the Professor.
I never thought I would fall in love with a piece of wood... that's what she said
Your beard is so spotty
+Darryl Speed beards for a lot of people are spotty until you let them grow in. Its only a baby - gotta let it grow more before you judge it :D
Great video as always. Keep up the awesome work.
I look forward to your reviews! Can't wait to watch.
I knew I was right about the foreshadowing at the start of the SOI predictions video =)
Yes I am out there. Thousands of dollars per Legacy deck spent!
Aaron Cain is THE best seller in my opinion every time i messaged him he replied within an hour and his deck box's are amazing
Someday I'll just end buying a pelican case for my cards u.u"!
This is quite literally deck box pornography
This is probably the most nuanced of the Professors reviews. Hes talking about freaking wood choices for christ's sake
Its due to amount of cash ppl invest in cards
+Bob Bobber Bobbeng Bobbington of Bobs oh my commentary was certainly not meant to be argumentative or derisive to the professor. More so a great surprise at the lengths the professor went to.
+GreenSscythe It's pretty darn important to talk about the wood you'll use when storing cards. Exotic woods while pretty are full of lots of oils, and I would be really cautious about those if I was storing my dual lands in there. Wood much like the cardboard we play with, all likes to be happy and nothing makes cards more happy that consistent and predictable humidity when stored.
humidor is the first a+ in the series if i'm not mistaken
I love watching these videos even though I don't collect the cards. I wish I lived in an area where the community excepts this, so i'm limited to the computer game. :(
Ive been waiting for this video since you showed the humidor on the stream a month or two back 🙃
Big fan of the premium cases. Need to decide between a Humidor or a Cube Vault.
+MerfolkMTG I'd say the Humidor is a good call... *cough*
coming from a cigar smoker who maintains a humidor. do not get this humidor deck box unless you are willing to monitor your humidity levels at least every few days. the reason, the area were the hydrometer is acts a point of weakness. it will leach or let out humidity.
+Steve L I agree totally.
Steve L Yep, cigars, pipes, got a lot of videos where I rant and talk and go on with a cigar or a pipe.
Sounds like I need to get in contact with cain for one of those sabers.
I really like the boxes, Professor! Great video, as usual. Also, the beard is cool too!
I'm digging the beard Brian.
I caught myself drooling...
I see that you've made a few purchases from Etsy! that blue Griffin mat is amazing.
Umber Griffin from Inked Gaming. They do have an Etsy store aswell though. I bought one from having to look at the professors and envy.
The beard is coming in nicely, Prof.
The best description of cedar ever: extremely very not good.
Oh my god, that humador box. I thought it'd be something like $150, maybe $200. Boy was I wrong.
Yea, and an Audi is nicer than a Honda. I wouldn't include these products on your grade sheet, its not a fair comparison to other products that are designed for affordable, everyday gaming use.
I love everything about those videos :')
Let the beard grow Prof!
Woo-hoo! Tcc uploaded!
Thanks for another great video! Can you perform a shake test of the Leopardwood/Holly Sideloading Dice and Deck Vault and post it? I would like to see if the cards and dice fall out before I purchase one.
Thanks
yeah, I'd much rather just build another modern deck than spend hundreds of dollars on boxes, but that's just me..Satin towers are fine!
+J kitsos Agreed!
Yeah new video!
"extremely very not good" - the English teacher.
+Glen Wolter damn it moment i heard that i went to the comments to comment that
+Tolarian Community College Breakin' the combos!
Cruise Hawkes spam the link
Guess I'm a Pauper player through and through... those look fantastic but too expensive.
Hey Professor the playmat at 9:17, could I ask where to get one please. That playmat looks really nice
Thank you

+Tolarian Community College Thank you to random comment! I have found my new mat!
+Tolarian Community College Thank you too as well. By the way you just helped a fellow Merfolk player spruce up his Magic gear for them.
Take care Professor
Dear professor, the video is great! I don't want to nitpick, but you mispronounced "neodymium".
yeah that bothered me too, but he's an English major, not science
Set2000 since he is an English major, pronouncing words(even unfamiliar) correctly should be a good skill the he should have.
