Im really growing to love this channel, the quality and depth of these reviews stand as some of the best ive seen anywhere and id never heard of some of these products before coming here. Well now looks like I have some shopping to do.
As always, thanks for the detailed and thoughtful analysis. IMHO, the Leafkicker boxes, though they are both unique and attractive, are less then practical as a "traveling deck" solution.and are more the kind of product that one would purchase and then proudly display at home as a permanent display case for a treasured deck. I can, for example, easily picture your new skull box adorning one of the bookcases behind your desk in future videos and thus occupying a place of honor! The resin material that the boxes are cast in, while weighty & substantial looking, is likely to sustain extensive damage from frequent outings and I'm afraid the painted finish & detail work would also suffer from regular travel. It would be a shame to end up with something this beautiful (and expensive) that is marred by numerous chips and scratches. On the other hand, the different wooden boxes you have reviewed in the past strike me as a viable solution for housing a deck that frequently travels to FNM or local tournaments while also acting as a step up in class and sophistication from the plastic or cardboard deck boxes that "everyone else" is carrying. And in fact, the wear & tear that occurs, on one of these hard wood boxes, from regular travel and use would likely increase its value and rustic attractiveness over time (much the same as one views the scars in fine leather). This is not a negative comment about Leafkicker, just an alternate point of view.
The oversized card compartment of the ultra pro commander deck box at first seemed to be a waste of space for me as well but i started putting my plane cards in there and it works perfect for that. Planechase commander is fun. And my friend puts his archenemy cards in his.
Another thing worth mentioning on the Ultra Pro Original Commander Deckbox is that, my from experience, only accommodates Ultra Pro sleeves. I've bought one of those and used Dragon Shield sleeves to put my single sleeved commander deck in the deck compartment. After a few uses I realized some of the sleeves folded downwards due to the size of the Dragon Shield sleeves. Because Dragon Shield sleeves are taller in height than Ultra Pro sleeves, the lid would close on the tops of the sleeves causing them to bend.
Ian .Horrell Yeah, they're neat. I think if Rook had been able to stay in business they might have been able to offer new styles and cool new takes on deck boxes. What a shame. Ah well.
This is such an amazing channel!, i was one of those palyers that bought the shity ultra-pro and the low quality products thinking they would last and was always struggling to find the best quality for my cards, thanks for the amount knowledge that you have given me in terms of products.
Wow, I had forgotten about Rook. It is sad to hear they are out of business and it was very nostalgic seeing those boxes. They were boxes my friends and I would use in elementary school. I always thought the Ultra Pro Commander deck boxes were made of paper. The leifkicker deck box is absolutely amazing!
Some great reviews! But for anyone looking to buy a good deck box, stick with Ultra Pro's Obsidian tower, holds a double sleeved commander deck along with all your dice and counters. Very sturdy and at such a low price, just cant beat it.
In my country, we only have Ultra Pro and Dragon Shield products, even then I still enjoy watching your videos, they are very informative and well done. stay awesome professor. Sorry for the bad english, it's not my native language
I own one of those Commander boxes. The oversized compartment actually holds 40 sleeved oversized cards. I use it for my Planechase deck. But I wholeheartedly agree that it's stupidly bulky. I'll also add that, like any other Ultra Pro art box, the design scratches and fades over time. Further, the lid is pretty fragile. I bought one brand new for a friend, and within minutes of opening it he bent the lid back a little too far trying to get his cards in, and it snapped at the hinge. Ever since, I've been exceedingly cautious with handling mine. It works, but it's pretty impractical to carry around, and it always feels like if you do something ever so slightly wrong, it'll fail on you.
Have you ever dealt with the OLD Ultra Pro Satin deck boxes? There were at least two different runs of them, one with a satin finish that could be rubbed off to reveal a metallic surface under, and another run which was just the flush plastic we typically see today on the Satin Towers. There was no under side compartment, and they could only hold about 75-80 double sleeved cards at most. I have one of each, and really enjoy them, wishing I could get my hands on more. They hold my double sleeved decks snugly, and aren't as bulky as the satin towers.
Awesome, thanks for doing a review of the Ultra Pro Commander box. I own one, the white one to be exact, and I love it. I use the spot of over sized cards for both the cards and my tokens, so it's functional. I don't mind the bulkiness of the box as it still fits in my backpack. As for price, I was able to get it at my LGS for 10 dollars. Anyways, thanks again for that review of it. Awesome job Professor!
First of all, reading Leifkicker's website, I know that his name is based of name "Leif". Being a swede, I know that it's pronounced "Leyf", with the "ey" as in "Ey, what's up?", not "Leaf" :) Second of all, being a natural science student, I know that magnets lose their magnetism over time due to how their magnetic properties work. They can also lose their magnetism if they are heated or recieve a bang. I don't know how hot it must get or how hard it must be slammed but I wouldn't rely on a magnetic deck box to be an investment for life. Great video! :)
My 11-year old daughter's been inspired by your videos and has done three crack-a-pack videos of her own. Now she want to add text and music. What video software do you use to add effects and edit your videos?
I don't know if it's a violation of the Tolarian CC code of conduct, but if it isn't, could you post a link? And when did you get your daughter started posting? My daughter's 3, so I've got a few users yet, but I think CCG's are great all around for teaching basic arithmetic and, more importantly, thinking and problem solving.
For a free editing software, that works very well, I would suggest serif movie maker. It has the basic tools, and the like that you will need to make a good quality video. If you have a little bit of money to burn, and you think that your daughter will use the program, I would look into getting either Sony Vegas; Adobe Premier pro; or as TCC uses, Final cut pro X, they are professional standard editing software, but being just that, gives them a larger price tag.
That is exactly my ultra pro double flip box. AND I LOVE IT. I was curious to which conclusion the Prof comes and I am DEVASTATED. hahaha I didn't mishandle my box as hard as the Prof. Served me well, although I can see all the flaws (especially the price point) now that he pointed them out. Nevertheless I am quite happy with it, since it does it's job and looks awesome.
You missed a point about the Leifkicker box... Should the top slide partially open in a backpack, the fact that the cards go in parallel to the slide motion means less of a chance of cards falling out of the box. I don't own one myself, but I'm curious to see more of their designs. Thanks for the video. :)
kcsnipes80 I have one somewhere with my yugioh cards from when I was in 3rd grade. I guess that now I have to find that stuff, now not just to sell the valuable yugioh cards, like blue eyes, but so I can use that box!
nice custom skull deckbox......was wondering if the eye sockets could be made toeither put in the d20s or even have ones that turn inside and lock on the amount of life...would be awesome.
Where i live the MTG players LARGELY play commander so its always good to see a lot of commander options. I myself mostly play yugioh and pokemon, but if a box can provide good quality to 100+ cards it will well and truly manage a mere 60
Also, the Orzhov skull deckbox is made for an EDH deck, so I think it would be better to replace the d10s with 2 spin down d20s since 20 + 20 = 40. Plus d10s take a long time to find numbers
One thing I think you should've mentioned is that the Ultra Pro Commander box can also hold Plane and Scheme cards. As far as I know there aren't many other options for Planechase or Archenemy players.
Thank you so much for these types of reviews. They really aid me in helping avoid bad products, and invest in better quality items. So thank you again. I just wish I could afford one of the leaf kickers, however sadly there are other staples of modern I need to obtain, since I plan on attempting go pro at some point in the near future.
My LGS (local game shop) got closed because people didn't buy from it. These disclaimers at the end are very real. Support your LGS whenever possible. I grew up in that place, and it was very hard to see it go. RIP Jester's Playhouse
If you could do a review of the Leifkicker Enchiridion? And some of the other deck boxes they produce? I I know you say that there good quality but id like to see a few of them in a video to compare them against each other.
Thank you Professor, after all these reviews I have bought two ultra pro satin towers and dragon sleeves and I would have ended up getting something much worse if it weren't for you. Thank you!
Nice Hamlet reference professor!!! To buy or not to buy, that is the question. Whether it is nobler in the mind to suffer the modesty of an Ultra Pro deck box, or to conquer and boast in style?
I've tried numerous deck boxes and improvised deck boxes (like Tupperware stuff) over the past eight years, but for Commander, nothing comes close to Ultra-Pro Satin Towers, especially for the price. Now, of course there are better and prettier boxes, like custom-built wooden boxes and that Leifkicker Skull ist intruiging as well, but those are way more expensive. Hey Professor, could you do a sort of summary video or chart, where you show all the tested products and sort them by grade?
I'm a huge fan of Rook Capsules, despite the fact that cards can get caught in the edges. The real selling point for the Capsules is if you can find one of their Endura cases, which are built like tanks and are able to hold four (or more) individual Capsules. But they're even harder to come by than the Capsules themselves.
The original Ultra Pro EDH box can hold Planechase, Vanguard and Archenemy cards, it also will hold my double sleeved Daretti deck, perfect for me! Thanks!!!!
Mister professor, I know this might be a tall request, but could you look at the MOX CUB3 by Ultra Pro? If not, at least your thoughts on it? I remember you commented on a Card Shop Life video when someone was annoyed at the deck box, but I wasn't exactly sure where the frustration stems from - the price or ridiculous size, or anything else. Thanks.
Hey, Professor, I haven't seen your entire playlist yet, but have you rated, or could you rate, the Third Die dice bags? I'm making my way through your lists now, so if there is a previously uploaded video, please disregard. Thank you.
sadley i brought the ultra pro box awhile ago ($50 around my area) and did so mostly on its looks and that i can hold 2 standard decks with sideboard however i believe you have got a worse one than mine i regularly chuck it in the backpack and not treat it too kindly but it is receiving damage in much the same places. it also scratches on the leather and i do not think it will be in good shape in a years time. but is still ok (if a bit over priced) for storing decks to take with you
I enjoy your review videos a lot! Are you were planning on reviewing the Mox Cube box that UltraPro is manufacturing in the future? My friends and I are curious if it is worth the price tag.
In fairness, I have the half-sized faux-leather flip box in pink with the same design. It's not bad. The magnet is strong, the inside is material-lined instead of cardboard. No clue why the dual deck boxes are so pants.
My Legion deck box survived a car wreck in which it was thrown from the far back into the front, though not without some damage. It did, however, remain latched.
The Ultra Pro Commander has a problem with bending the tops of the sleeves of the cards in the back of the deck storage area (not the plus sized card area)
Dear Professor, What do you think about the Ultimate Guard Compartment Box? I am fed up with Deckboxes holding only one Deck, I eventually forget often at my brothers flat. So I want to buy one Box for many of my Decks, but I am unsure. Yours sincerly, Hal.
Augh I'm in the process of building an Orzhov commander deck and now I want that Ozhov Skull Deckbox. The timing couldn't be more perfect. I think I can hear my wallet crying from here.
I have a couple questions for you Professor. My family occasionally plays MTG to humour my sister and I who are avid but rather new players. However, she and I essentially have one very powerful deck and one that is frankly disappointing, and it's obvious that they are bored with the absurdly uneven matchup. In light of this, I'd like to keep a set of duel decks around for casually playing with them. Which duel deck set, in your opinion, is the most evenly balanced?
Great video professor! Could you review the basic plastic deck boxes from ultra pro, the ones with no art and just say 'deck box' on them and the ultra pro 'pro matte' sleeves please, I want to know if there any different from thier normal sleeves. Thanks!
Imperial Versian No I dont mean the normal ultra pro sleeves and the pro deck box lol, I've seen every one of his videos, type in on TH-cam ultra pro plastic deck box and if in the video, the box just says deck box on it, thats the one im talking about and ultra pro 'pro matte' sleeves, there ment to have a tighter seal. :-)
I modeled my own deck box that was inspired both off of the Ultra Pro Satin tower and Ultimate Guard Monolith. After 3D printing multiple versions and updating it to get the kinks out, would I be able to ship one to you for a possible review?
To me the Ultra Pro Commander boxes are mostly for the other multiplayer games that didn't catch on as much but used more oversized cards. I'm talking about Planechase and ArchEnemy
Professor, will you be doing any budget deck videos anytime soon? I heard you were going to do one this week but I don't know how reliable the source was.
Tolarian Community College Thank you! I'm just now getting into Magic and I don't want to break bank on one of the tier 1 decks or buy an overpriced/lackluster clash-pack/intro deck so that's great news to hear.
I have 2 ultrapro dual flip boxes for my EDH decks, I really dont understand why your box's structure is like that. the lining on my boxes are as hard as a rock and after slamming around in my magic bag for over a year there isnt so much as a crease. Maybe that pink one is just poor quality?
After watching this video I bought the ultra pro end deck to for my edh and archenemy card but the “hinge” tore immediately then the Velcro came of and on top of all that the deck was almost impossible to get out
hi professor! i was so glad when i found your channel because last weekend i got interested in magic the gathering. Yes i know about tapping for mana , planeswalkers. But i need some help with like what are d20s for, casting spells, and stuff like that. Probably you wont respond but a reccomendation, can you do a walkthrough of how to play? thanks!
My FLGS charges over MSRP for EVERYTHING (even booster packs), but their Legion Iconic boxes are $4, I guess I'll just stick with those :-) I wish they would make more than 5 designs!!!
I am smiling right now, as I have been using the same cheapo ultra pro deck box (you know, the ones with the thin, flimsy plastic) for years, with no issues at all. It cost me 1$. I must say that I usually carry only a box and a binder on me. So I have no fear of getting anything squished, unlike other players who carry 3-7 decks on their backs with boxes of cards, binders and playmats and dice bags....
i've been wanting to buy and send you some of bushiroad's anime print sleeves and deck boxes... theyre not good but i like them.. either way i havent been able to afford any for a while but one day maybe :P
Has anyone bought the clear dragon shield sleeves? I really like the back of magic cards and I want to be able to see it. Are the clear ones as clear as the colored ones? And do the clear sleeves get dirty easily?
Mraaaaaaaa. I need to get more MTG cards. My friends and I play at school. I'm going to a good card shop in a couple weeks to pick us some mtg cards. Btw I ❤️your videos
Hey TCC, do you know of any professional-looking box that can hold 5+ commander decks (preferably double sleeved). Can't find anything even close online, so I thought asking you would be a good idea.
Once you get to more than a few decks you may just want to look at large box/carrying case for cards with dividers.Right now I have 12 of my decks in the "RTR" holiday box. It snugly fits four decks per row single sleeved with the dividers and allows them to be removed fairly easily. Carrying it is a bit awkward at times though. I plan on investing on a nicer carrying case with handles or straps. But I have to stop buying cards for new decks first. lol
Check out these guys, I just picked up a case to hold 4 double sleeved commander decks. Its the best thing I've found on the market, and you can even put ultra pro 100+ count deck boxes directly into the cases. The long rectangular cases available on their page should hold 5 decks, just check the descriptions. www.etsy.com/shop/PlayingKakapo
Leifkicker is amazing. I cannot agree more with the Professor. He is DEFINITELY worth checking out. Seriously impressive work.
And my friend puts his archenemy cards in his.
i met the man behind Leifkicker. such an awesome guy. he lives only a hour away from me.
You're such a blessing on my life professor. As a young, white, gay man who loves magic, you're great attitude and intelligence inspire me.
8:25 But professor, the scene with the skull and the "to be or not to be" soliloquy aren't even in the same act!
My first deck box was a Rook tin, and I've got 3 floating about. I've gained a newfound appreciation for them now :)
Ian .Horrell Yeah, they're neat. I think if Rook had been able to stay in business they might have been able to offer new styles and cool new takes on deck boxes. What a shame. Ah well.
7:18 The way how the whole decks fits the entire box perfectly is pleasuring my OCD.
This is such an amazing channel!, i was one of those palyers that bought the shity ultra-pro and the low quality products thinking they would last and was always struggling to find the best quality for my cards, thanks for the amount knowledge that you have given me in terms of products.

I always thought the Ultra Pro Commander deck boxes were made of paper. The leifkicker deck box is absolutely amazing!
Your videos can soothe a troubled soul my friend. Cheers and keep em comin!
my Ultra-Pro dual flip box is holding up fantastically and I've had it for over a year now
4 months on my duel flip by ultra pro, and just fine. And he didn't even mention how it can hold oversized cards (the interior layout can change!
My favorite Rook capsule was the Medusa one since the artwork on it was phenomenal and wish I could buy more for the sake of nostalgia.
Some great reviews! But for anyone looking to buy a good deck box, stick with Ultra Pro's Obsidian tower, holds a double sleeved commander deck along with all your dice and counters. Very sturdy and at such a low price, just cant beat it.

My 11-year old daughter's been inspired by your videos and has done three crack-a-pack videos of her own. Now she want to add text and music. What video software do you use to add effects and edit your videos?
jqxok I use Final Cut Pro X but iMovie works fine for basic stuff like text and sound.
If you have Windows, Windows movie maker is free and works like a charm. It's just very basic.
Her videos are not on the internet. She has, however, been playing Magic since she was about 7 or 8.
For a free editing software, that works very well, I would suggest serif movie maker. It has the basic tools, and the like that you will need to make a good quality video.

8:22 Yu-Gi-Oh!
That’s Yugi’s Solid Gold Deckbox from the show
excellent evaluation as always, keeping the community well informed~!!

A+ review, as always. Keep up the great work!
i have an ultra pro dualdeck box and (at least on mine) the magnetic latch seems to work very well
WTB a full list/spreadsheet of boxes reviewed so far, with grades? 7 videos is a barrier (but a barrier of love!).
Where i live the MTG players LARGELY play commander so its always good to see a lot of commander options. I myself mostly play yugioh and pokemon, but if a box can provide good quality to 100+ cards it will well and truly manage a mere 60
The giant odd shaped commander deck box something he didn't mention is sometimes the first card will snag had it damage a shock land :(
Also, the Orzhov skull deckbox is made for an EDH deck, so I think it would be better to replace the d10s with 2 spin down d20s since 20 + 20 = 40.
Plus d10s take a long time to find numbers
One thing I think you should've mentioned is that the Ultra Pro Commander box can also hold Plane and Scheme cards. As far as I know there aren't many other options for Planechase or Archenemy players.

Prof. another great review. Thanks for testing these products.

Have you ever done the Ultra Pro Commander Deck Boxes w/ the Art?
Will you be making a video on buying and selling vintage magic? like the risks and things to take into account?
Mister professor, I know this might be a tall request, but could you look at the MOX CUB3 by Ultra Pro? If not, at least your thoughts on it? I remember you commented on a Card Shop Life video when someone was annoyed at the deck box, but I wasn't exactly sure where the frustration stems from - the price or ridiculous size, or anything else. Do you have some sort of database, or spreadsheet that has all of the products you've reviewed, grade, and pros/cons? that would be handy.

Love your videos, please don't ever stop.
Just found a local card shop and I'm going to fnm next Friday
2:50 So it's basically the Monster High logo
I enjoy your review videos a lot! Are you were planning on reviewing the Mox Cube box that UltraPro is manufacturing in the future? My friends and I are curious if it is worth the price tag.
Hey Professor, any words on the announcement of m16 being names Magic Origins? Announced on the Fate Reforged pro tour.
thanks for the review! i guess i'll have to wait for Ultimate Guard deck boxes to reach my LGS instead of settling with Ultra Pro.
Did you ever review the Ultra Pro (Kaalia) Command Tower?
In fairness, I have the half-sized faux-leather flip box in pink with the same design.
It's not bad. The magnet is strong, the inside is material-lined instead of cardboard.
No clue why the dual deck boxes are so pants.
My Legion deck box survived a car wreck in which it was thrown from the far back into the front, though not without some damage. It did, however, remain latched.
You should try with DEX Protection... I'm wondering how good those deck boxes are... I trust in your judgment :B
Yay! Another deck box video! I was afraid that you were done with these.
The Ultra Pro Commander has a problem with bending the tops of the sleeves of the cards in the back of the deck storage area (not the plus sized card area)
Dear Professor,
What do you think about the Ultimate Guard Compartment Box? I am fed up with Deckboxes holding only one Deck, I eventually forget often at my brothers flat. So I want to buy one Box for many of my Decks, but I am unsure.
Yours sincerly,
Hal.
Augh I'm in the process of building an Orzhov commander deck and now I want that Ozhov Skull Deckbox. The timing couldn't be more perfect. I think I can hear my wallet crying from here.
Please do a tiny leaders episode. I just learned of this format and had a blast with my black green glissa infect deck. It's my new favorite format.
xexilez99x I will talk Tiny Leaders eventually. I promise.
Thanks for another video! You already made me save lots of money with your valuable advices. Keep going!
Thanks!
Those are pretty much the very first review videos he made. Look them up.
Your videos are great and very informative. Very helpful. The Hamlet reference made me laugh.
I modeled my own deck box that was inspired both off of the Ultra Pro Satin tower and Ultimate Guard Monolith. After 3D printing multiple versions and updating it to get the kinks out, would I be able to ship one to you for a possible review?
when are the budget clan decks coming out?
To me the Ultra Pro Commander boxes are mostly for the other multiplayer games that didn't catch on as much but used more oversized cards. I'm talking about Planechase and ArchEnemy
Just thought I'd say thanks for another great video, looking forward to the next :3
I wanna get the ratchetbomb box for my tribal gobbies EDH. that thing is awesome!
You should showcase your Commander decks. I think you have an interesting personality and I'm sure that is reflected in your commander choices.
I saw some Max Protection "Shuffle-Tech" sleeves at my LGS, wondering how good they are.
Also, 120 packs of foil "Commander" sleeves for the 2014 commander.
I have no idea wtf you're talking about but you were very interesting. Gj on well constructed videos. =)
I miss my Rook boxes... they just felt so clean to use.
Ooh that "skullbox" is so sweet! :-)
Professor, will you be doing any budget deck videos anytime soon? I heard you were going to do one this week but I don't know how reliable the source was.
Eric Brannon In the works! Very, very soon.
So was the B/W edh deck intentionally chosen to go with the skull deck box?
The commander is Teysa, Orzhov Scion, and the box has the Orzhov guild symbol, so it has to be intentional.
I was looking at him moving that Leifkicker box around and the only question in my mind was: "Who do I need to kill to get one of those?"
Liber Khaos Your accountant?
DEAL!!!!!
Didn't think it'd be that easy!

Probably you wont respond but a reccomendation, can you do a walkthrough of how to play? thanks!
D-20's are used to track life and for rules just check the internet
My FLGS charges over MSRP for EVERYTHING (even booster packs), but their Legion Iconic boxes are $4, I guess I'll just stick with those :-)
I wish they would make more than 5 designs!!!
Awesome review as usual!
In your opinion what would be a perfect choice for a expensive single sleeve standard deck that I have mostly everything foiled out?
TheGoldenboy717 How much are you looking to spend?
Dosen't really matter it's going to be an investment for my standard deck so price isn't an issue
Mraaaaaaaa. I need to get more MTG cards. My friends and I play at school. I'm going to a good card shop in a couple weeks to pick us some mtg cards. Btw I ❤️your videos
Yay i love this series ! Thank you!:)
You should do the Star City Games Deck Boxes
Was that the millennium puzzle box?
this would be VERY pricey, but could you do a MM or MM2 (once it comes out) booster box game?
SuperLicorice Given the limited supply and the fact that boxes likely won't be available for MSRP, I doubt it. If they are, then I will consider it.
Tolarian Community College Thank you! That would be so cool.
I need a box that can fit Oversized commander cards.
Lmao that millennium yugioh box
i want that skull for my zombie deck and the hedron for my eldrazi deck lol. but they're sooo expensive now.
Hey TCC, do you know of any professional-looking box that can hold 5+ commander decks (preferably double sleeved). Can't find anything even close online, so I thought asking you would be a good idea.
A review some larger card boxes.cases for more than a couple decks would be nice. Keep up the reviews!!
AnvilHandsMan Dude man your soon right... Review this Professor!
