    Notice the patches of grass at the edge of Cinnabar “Island”. This is probably why the very edge of Cinnabar is coded for encounters, and is why you can encounter so many weird things on the coast (such as MissingNo if you do the Old Man trick). People have theorized that Cinnabar was originally bigger with some grass for a while, so it’s really neat to see those theories confirmed.

    I know we don't have much story information, but I can't help but wonder if there was something similar to Sun and Moon going on with the original plot. In that Silph would turn out to be the real villains, and they had hired Team Rocket to do their dirty work. It would explain whey Porygon, a pokemon they created, is being distributed at a casino that Team Rocket runs. It feels like Saffron was supposed to be the last city, as it's last in the fly order, and the guards were probably supposed to check your badges instead of getting water.
    Maybe someday we'll find out what was going on in this old build.

    • @TheObsessiveGamer
      @TheObsessiveGamer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Saffron City is confirmed to be where the last gym would have originally been as Sabrina was supposed to be the 8th gym leader originally, so there is some credence to that theory actually i'd say... and honestly the Pokemon version of Tokyo would make a hell of a lot of sense as the grand finale anyways

    • @WaterKirby1994
      @WaterKirby1994 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Saffron City was a fortress for Team Rocket in the Manga with Silph Co being their base if I remember correctly. There was a barrier created by a Mr Mime that made entry almost impossible. It was more of a climax with Team Rocket having all 3 Legendary Birds under their command. With the manga story Saffron City is comparable to New Pork City from Mother 3 in that they are huge cities with climax tones & then more stuff after falling from a skyscraper.

    The stacked towers of houses WERE placeholders as you said, but the random incorrect blocks like how some of the entrances to buildings in the alpha map are garbled (Like at 11:28), or how Route 24 and Route 20 in the beta map have ledges where the water should be, that's due to the source code of the maps getting corrupted before the images were made, which resulted in a map with the wrong tiles, because the corruption changed the tiles there. TCRF agreed with this. You are 100% right about the stacked houses being placeholders. This is also why half Route 3, Route 18, Route 14, and a few others are either fully or partially missing, many of the tiles could've been blanked out by corruption or in the case of Viridian City, it could've either not been archive, or just plain old lost. The square of blocks in Saffron City was a placeholder too.

    • @TheObsessiveGamer
      @TheObsessiveGamer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I can agree with this, but I still question when we already had water tiles elsewhere, why only that section of the water was using ground and ledge pieces? It's why I do wonder if maybe those could be intentional at least for the time. The garbled stuff and the missing maps I 100% agree with however being corruptions.

    I have a feeling the Alpha map was built with some kind of show floor demo in mind, based on how everything from Pallet Town to Pewter City seems to be in working order, but everything beyond those is in a very rough, placeholder-ish state. Chances are, the demo would have started at Pallet Town and taken you through Veridian City to Pewter City, where the demo would have likely ended once you defeated Brock or whoever the gym leader there was at the time. With the Spaceworld demo build of Gen II having been found, it'll be interesting to see if eventually this demo build of Gen I turns up.
    As for the Beta map, I think what where seeing there is the world map in the middle of a tileset transition. Most likely, the map is still using the old tile layout combined with the new tile definitions. This is why most of the Routes look somewhat okay - the tile definitions for those areas likely didn't change much - whereas the towns and a few of the later routes are a scrambled mess. As for the completely missing areas, my guess is that the tileset changes there were so drastic that the game could no longer load certain tiles without crashing, so they removed those areas in order to keep the game in a somewhat playable state while they ironed out the kinks.

    If you take a small bit more time to dig, you'll also find that, yes, SilphCo. is meant to be a sort of Indigo League tournament.
    In the final game, you can find many unused Tournament style ranks and badges.
    Youd fight through a gauntlet of trainers and leaders before fighting Professor Oak(also unused fight in the final game!!) And then itd have ended with a dungeon with Mewtwo! But this was ofc moved to where it is now in the final game and a lot shorter.

      @@TheObsessiveGamer it's just a little tougher to find, the original idea was silphco being where the indigo league was, and it was supposed to be a big tourney type thing, code of this tourney exists in the final game but going through older archives, like Helixchamber I believe(been a long time)has some more of those things.
      Sabrina being the last gym also makes sense, since if Silphco was the Indigo League, it made sense to put it in the final place and in the biggest city!

    Very interesting info but your playlists are not ordered in a chronological way thus making them difficult to follow the way you might intended, apart from that you've done a pretty good job covering these early development mysteries to see what the creators may have originally expected for these games to be.
    The Legend of Zelda ones are my favorites since I grew up surrounded by all the myths and urban legends about missing items and mechanics that never made it into the final game and it's great to finally see that many were on point with what the people had theorized in the past.

    Some things are missing from the beta map because they got corrupted or accidentally deleted, you can even see some parts of the existing maps are corrupted. Also that gigantic block of fences is where the Silph Co building is supposed to be IIRC
    EDIT: I am NOT talking about the stacked buildings. I'm talking about the incorrect tiles on the edges of some of the maps, why Viridian City is missing, and how half of Route 3 is missing.

    • @TheObsessiveGamer
      @TheObsessiveGamer  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually that isn't the case as these were found as image file assets as opposed to ripped from an existing rom of the game. We know these were using these as placeholders since the constant stacking of buildings especially are prevalent.

    • @WinVisten
      @WinVisten 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheObsessiveGamer I meant how half of Beta Route 3 was missing and how some of the cities from the beta map are entirely absent. The stacked buildings WERE placeholders, and so was the giant block of fences. I was referring to things OTHER than the stacked buildings, like how some of the tiles in the edges of many of the maps seemed to be the wrong tile or how portions of the maps are blank (Like Route 3 in the beta map). I'm sorry my wording was bad, I tend to get easily confuse people with wording (And get confused by it myself). ^^;
      I do appreciate you trying to correct me, because you have a valid reason to believe this.
      Although, assuming these images were created from .asm files of the maps like you'd find in pret's disassemblies of the actual games, then the tiles COULD be wrong, if the .asm files used to generate the images were partially corrupted. They were probably not just raw images, they were probably created with a mapping tool from a map file actually meant to be used in the game, and the image of the map is all we have of it, with the mapping tool and the actual map data file being lost.
