I have a feeling the Alpha map was built with some kind of show floor demo in mind, based on how everything from Pallet Town to Pewter City seems to be in working order, but everything beyond those is in a very rough, placeholder-ish state. Chances are, the demo would have started at Pallet Town and taken you through Veridian City to Pewter City, where the demo would have likely ended once you defeated Brock or whoever the gym leader there was at the time. As for the Beta map, I think what where seeing there is the world map in the middle of a tileset transition. Most likely, the map is still using the old tile layout combined with the new tile definitions. This is why most of the Routes look somewhat okay - the tile definitions for those areas likely didn't change much - whereas the towns and a few of the later routes are a scrambled mess. As for the completely missing areas, my guess is that the tileset changes there were so drastic that the game could no longer load certain tiles without crashing, so they removed those areas in order to keep the game in a somewhat playable state while they ironed out the kinks.
man, I hadn't noticed it before, but with so much complication in the development of these games, it's almost a miracle that they were launched in stores without any catastrophic glitch, and it was still successful

Actually it is incomplete simply cause these were not ripped from any roms that wouldn't have the proper tileset it needs, but rather from the source file itself. this is so nice! I feel honored that you may have heard my wish 💗 the video is so good! I got curious though, what happened to the stage 1-2 maps? could they be looked at too 🥰
Thanks for the feedback. It assisted in the creation of this video :) Stage 1 and 2 as I showed were just simply... drawings. Stage 1 was just a concept of what the world could look like, while stage 2 is just a simple map a lot like the town map that's already in the game + the island.
@@TheObsessiveGamer ah right, thank you! Also, it would be fun to discuss the early maps, and wonder what could have been the ideas behind the original ideas and the changes that have been made! It would be nice to be able to analyse the content with the community you have here!
@@kultw1837 Yeah there's a crazy amount of maps here to not go fast otherwise this video would be a few hours long lol but as you say, i'm always happy to discuss them here. As for the original ideas from the stage 1 map, I feel they drew a basic idea to start planning things from using the Kanto region of Japan as influence, but didn't actually build a proper map until Stage 2 with where towns and routes were to go, before then actually making it from stage 3 onwards.
@@TheObsessiveGamer I know we wouldn’t mind having longer videos! ☺️ The first draft sure is curious, since it depicts the original vision for the world. The third, ”alpha” is the one in particular I would like to analyse. In Viridian for example: Why have the roadblocks? Why is there the forest maze? Why are the cities lay-outs changed? I would love to hear your thoughts on the changes, while having enough time to see what is there. Thank you for the responsiveness and the content ☺️
@@kultw1837 Well I did explain whatever truly stood out in my opinion like the roadblocks being for not letting people through prior to having 8 badges. Different city layout I personally believe is just a creative choice as opposed to a gameplay choice in this case.
The reason I can't think of it as Pokemon Centre is cause an Inn already exists in the game and Inns in JRPGs are always your healing zone. Thus it be redundant
Inns were meant to be the Centers, yes! In the old concepts, that where the trainers were shown to stay. If you take a small bit more time to dig, you'll also find that, yes, SilphCo. is meant to be a sort of Indigo League tournament. In the final game, you can find many unused Tournament style ranks and badges. Youd fight through a gauntlet of trainers and leaders before fighting Professor Oak(also unused fight in the final game!!) And then itd have ended with a dungeon with Mewtwo! But this was ofc moved to where it is now in the final game and a lot shorter.
@@TheObsessiveGamer it's just a little tougher to find, the original idea was silphco being where the indigo league was, and it was supposed to be a big tourney type thing, code of this tourney exists in the final game but going through older archives, like Helixchamber I believe(been a long time)has some more of those things. Sabrina being the last gym also makes sense, since if Silphco was the Indigo League, it made sense to put it in the final place and in the biggest city!
The problem with that is that we already have the "inn" which Inns traditionally act like what is the Pokemon Centers in RPGs. PMC might have stood for Pocket Monster Championship, which is a fitting name for a beta gym
Here's a topic I may suggest to you that hasn't even been explored, Unused content on DVDs. For example, The Curious George Movie's DVD Release has the 1998-2012 Universal Pictures Home Entertainment logo when you play Title 33 but it isn't used. It might have been leftover from the international releases of the movie on DVD like the Australian one uses the logo.
Some things are missing from the beta map because they got corrupted or accidentally deleted, you can even see some parts of the existing maps are corrupted. Also that gigantic block of fences is where the Silph Co building is supposed to be IIRC EDIT: I am NOT talking about the stacked buildings. I'm talking about the incorrect tiles on the edges of some of the maps, why Viridian City is missing, and how half of Route 3 is missing.
Actually that isn't the case as these were found as image file assets as opposed to ripped from an existing rom of the game. We know these were using these as placeholders since the constant stacking of buildings especially are prevalent.
@@TheObsessiveGamer I meant how half of Beta Route 3 was missing and how some of the cities from the beta map are entirely absent. The stacked buildings WERE placeholders, and so was the giant block of fences. I was referring to things OTHER than the stacked buildings, like how some of the tiles in the edges of many of the maps seemed to be the wrong tile or how portions of the maps are blank (Like Route 3 in the beta map). I'm sorry my wording was bad, I tend to get easily confuse people with wording (And get confused by it myself). ^^; I do appreciate you trying to correct me, because you have a valid reason to believe this. Although, assuming these images were created from .asm files of the maps like you'd find in pret's disassemblies of the actual games, then the tiles COULD be wrong, if the .asm files used to generate the images were partially corrupted. They were probably not just raw images, they were probably created with a mapping tool from a map file actually meant to be used in the game, and the image of the map is all we have of it, with the mapping tool and the actual map data file being lost.
I theorize it's more "Pocket Monster Championship". Inns traditionally cover your healing mechanic in a JRPG, so it'd be redundant otherwise i'd think.
Very interesting info but your playlists are not ordered in a chronological way thus making them difficult to follow the way you might intended, apart from that you've done a pretty good job covering these early development mysteries to see what the creators may have originally expected for these games to be. The Legend of Zelda ones are my favorites since I grew up surrounded by all the myths and urban legends about missing items and mechanics that never made it into the final game and it's great to finally see that many were on point with what the people had theorized in the past.
Alpha/Beta Route 1 is similar to a rom hack that I played almost 10 years ago that had starters on route 1 at lvl 5. Was a difficult rom that I've been looking for for years now as I enjoyed it. It was black & white, not color. If anyone knows of it, lmk. Thnx
Perhaps the Old Man being drunk in the Japanese version is a holdover from when the Inns were in the towns? For that matter perhaps the guards' behaviour in letting you go through was due to them getting drunk and neglecting their responsibilities? Plausible.
I think it says PMG simply because the bottom part is thicker than and thus likely a stylized G. Also Inns are much more likely the original Pokemon Centres as that is what they normally do in any JRPG anyways lol
It's official we need "Every Copy of Pokemon is Personalized" meme & to get what Castle Plexus is for Mario 64 to Generations 1&2 of Pokemon. Just imagine going into some random door or talking to a certain person & finding yourself in a somewhat different region. Some Pokemon can only be found in Beta Kanto & some can only be found in Alpha Kanto. We can expect some massive maze to reach Mew or something crazier in some entirely different Cerulean Cave.
@@TheObsessiveGamer I don't think Gen 1 games are capable of this kind of labyrinth. FireRed & Emerald are the games most Rom Hackers have experience with. What if this Kanto Plexus were made in FireRed given Gen1 & Gen 2 Maps? Then maybe we could have 5 different versions of Kanto. Then we make things even crazier by having scrapped pokemon, glitchmon, & even wild trainers added back into the game. Pokemon Kanto Plexus seems like an interesting idea.
As the GB cart was maxed out they removed of many unnecessary things including some Pokemon but they coded a pokemon with pokedex no 000 that became missing no
Well problem is that the Inn already represents the Pokemon Centre as that's where one normally heals in any JRPG. Also the last latter has a thicker bottom that may indicate it is a stylized "G" and thus a Gym. If it is a C, maybe it's a "Pocket Monster Championship". Regardless it can't be the Pokemon Center because of that Inn
The line at the bottom is thicker, so I am theorizing it's a G. However it can't be a Pokemon Centre even if it was a C as the INN serves that purpose considering that is what inns do in most jrpgs
@@TheObsessiveGamer but pokemon isn't like most jrpgs. There is a inn thats left over in the final ver of red blue yellow. And its just a blank building that has a invisible pc in it. Suggesting it was a access point for something before it was outdated with the pokecenter. I just have a hard time believing that the pmg is a gym when there's already a big ass building called gym.imo it's PMC and was a early pokemon center. And not a gym. And the thick line under it is just the border of the sign. Just my opinion 🤷😌
@@cody181818 at that point it clearly was being made more like a traditional JRPG. Interviews exist where their desire to make this game even stemmed from Dragon Quest. Regardless, inns are in virtually every town in that build and it would have a purpose likely and that purpose likely would serve to heal your team like in most jrpgs of the era. Also I did not see any buildings in the Alpha build that said gym on it. "PMG/PMC" The beta version is when we see the modern gym buildings and the disappearance of the PMG/PMC buildings. Also that line is a boarder. It lines up with the other characters who share space on that line. Thus this is my theory.
i don t understand many steps of game creation... i mean... in 3 days... with a program like "rpgmaker 2003" i (alone) can draw the entire joto region within 5 to 8 days... (inside of buildings includes... maby 15 days for the entire completed map with dungeons and secrets passages includes)... for interactives stuffs like tall grass and cutable trees it can takes me about 10 more days... drawing all the pokemons and their stats from scratch can takes about a month for a single person (exept that "rpgmaker 2003" have difficulties handeling few details like the pokemon storage system... but thoses issues cleared... it is a breez) ... meaning ... alone with enough dedication... i could have created alone that game in less than 4 months... so... what is the deal???
@@TheObsessiveGamer awesome! Cover those different super GameBoy borders, and skateboard animations among others! haven’t seen anyone talk about those in detail
The Inn's already serve as the Pokemon Center, so that can't be a Pokemon Centre. And the reason I think it's a G as opposed to C is cause the line at the bottom is thicker, which might point to a stylized G.
@@TheObsessiveGamer I disagree, my theory would be that the inn would have served a different purpose, that has been scrapped. Perhaps the player had health too in early concepts. I think this is supported by the huge inn, which would have been a combination of both and Inn and a pokemon centre. I'm by no means the authority, its just my theory :) the video was awesome regardless, I live for this stuff!
@@fromthegamethrone Inns are traditionally used as a means to heal your whole party in JRPGS. This also means it would have served that purpose too especially since by interviews Pokemon was created after they played Dragon Quest. Nothing in the concept shows that the player would have a health bar or be involved directly in battles themselves. It's always been about the Pokemon.
@@TheObsessiveGamer you're entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine, they don't have to match. But I'd be interested in your take on why both Gyms and pokemon gyms exist, then?
@@fromthegamethrone But of course, this is all theory we both are doing and I like discussing them like this with others, so much to each others opinions. The reason I don't see why gyms and Pokemon gyms would be separate is cause the concept never showed humans actually fighting and it's always been about Pokemon fights in the end. Thus why anything there is to heal and utilize your Pokemon to my understanding.

You go over the factual changes really quick, and the amount of time spent on a picture is not enough to intake much...
The first draft sure is curious, since it depicts the original vision for the world.
3:29 I think that says PMC for Pokemon Center
I haven't ever seen evidence of Silph Co itself being the League itself. That always appeared to be theory since Sabrina was the 8th gym originally.
I have a theory on the truck, so basically they just put the place where the truck is into a place where no one can see it or find a way to see it
Love this video!! I haven't seen this up close before- and I watch a ton of Pokemon videos
hyped for gen.2!
Bro how do you not have more subs, you're amazing!
As a long time Pokemon fan 2:56 made me belly laugh. I don't sub to much but you earned mine
Nice vid bro, but I'm pretty sure it says PMC ( Pokemon Center)
The problem with that is that we already have the "inn" which Inns traditionally act like what is the Pokemon Centers in RPGs. PMC might have stood for Pocket Monster Championship, which is a fitting name for a beta gym
Oh sh#t im late love beta/cut content vid cheers dude nice info
Always a next time :) and thank you! :D
Lol your voice reminds me Saul Goodman 😂 love your videos 🤩
I don't hear this one enough but I like that comparison lol. Thanks!
I always like content like this when i happen upon it liked, subbed, and a request for a vid like this for the golden sun games perhaps
I just don’t see PMG. I see it as PMC. That would make it the PokeMon Center.
Here we gooo!
If I ever expand to movies, there's plenty of Cut Content there I can always explore lol
@@TheObsessiveGamer Lol!
It would be cool to see someone recreate the ideas/tileset of the alpha into a complete game.
Honestly would be a fun demake (though they'd need more PMG gyms to fill in the remaining of the badges)
Some things are missing from the beta map because they got corrupted or accidentally deleted, you can even see some parts of the existing maps are corrupted. Also that gigantic block of fences is where the Silph Co building is supposed to be IIRC
EDIT: I am NOT talking about the stacked buildings.
@@TheObsessiveGamer I meant how half of Beta Route 3 was missing and how some of the cities from the beta map are entirely absent. The stacked buildings WERE placeholders, and so was the giant block of fences. I was referring to things OTHER than the stacked buildings, like how some of the tiles in the edges of many of the maps seemed to be the wrong tile or how portions of the maps are blank (Like Route 3 in the beta map). I'm sorry my wording was bad, I tend to get easily confuse people with wording (And get confused by it myself). ^^;
I do appreciate you trying to correct me, because you have a valid reason to believe this.
I think PMC stood for Pocket Monster Center.
I theorize it's more "Pocket Monster Championship". Inns traditionally cover your healing mechanic in a JRPG, so it'd be redundant otherwise i'd think.
Your content is pretty amazing keep it up , liked, subbed;)
Nice vid!
Thanks for sharing this niche pokemon info!
This is very interesting how on earth did i miss this?
This is such a great channel I love the Zelda videos 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Very interesting info but your playlists are not ordered in a chronological way thus making them difficult to follow the way you might intended, apart from that you've done a pretty good job covering these early development mysteries to see what the creators may have originally expected for these games to be.
The Legend of Zelda ones are my favorites since I grew up surrounded by all the myths and urban legends about missing items and mechanics that never made it into the final game and it's great to finally see that many were on point with what the people had theorized in the past.
They should be in chronological order of release of video? i'll double check them. Thanks for letting me know!
honestly, i always thot the rocks surrounding stuff was tree's. lol
Plausible.
Yeah that sounds quite possible. The Inn might have had a bar within it too afterall
Couldnt it be “PMC”. Pocket monster center?”
I think it says PMG simply because the bottom part is thicker than and thus likely a stylized G. Also Inns are much more likely the original Pokemon Centres as that is what they normally do in any JRPG anyways lol
amazing, keep going! :D
So… anyone else notice that world tiles in alpha and beta are only placed in 2×2 groupings, and not individually?
Rad man. Fellow PokeTuber. Subbed 🖤✌🏻
Thanks fellow PokeTuber :3
It's official we need "Every Copy of Pokemon is Personalized" meme & to get what Castle Plexus is for Mario 64 to Generations 1&2 of Pokemon. Just imagine going into some random door or talking to a certain person & finding yourself in a somewhat different region. Some Pokemon can only be found in Beta Kanto & some can only be found in Alpha Kanto. We can expect some massive maze to reach Mew or something crazier in some entirely different Cerulean Cave.
Well we officially need someone to make this a real mod now :P
@@TheObsessiveGamer I don't think Gen 1 games are capable of this kind of labyrinth. FireRed & Emerald are the games most Rom Hackers have experience with. What if this Kanto Plexus were made in FireRed given Gen1 & Gen 2 Maps? Then maybe we could have 5 different versions of Kanto. Then we make things even crazier by having scrapped pokemon, glitchmon, & even wild trainers added back into the game. Pokemon Kanto Plexus seems like an interesting idea.
I thought the dark round structures surrounding some towns were trees or bushes.
As the GB cart was maxed out they removed of many unnecessary things including some Pokemon but they coded a pokemon with pokedex no 000 that became missing no
Missingno was never intentional.
In the beginning you say the beta had mountainous rocks. Those are still trees you can see the base of the trunk still.
Yeah typo though. They look kinda dark here so it looked more like rocks for a bit there
03:30 PMC Pokemon Medical Center makes more sense to me
Well problem is that the Inn already represents the Pokemon Centre as that's where one normally heals in any JRPG. Also the last latter has a thicker bottom that may indicate it is a stylized "G" and thus a Gym. If it is a C, maybe it's a "Pocket Monster Championship". Regardless it can't be the Pokemon Center because of that Inn
@@TheObsessiveGamer OkayChamp
cartridge limitation suuuuucks, this version seems way more fun than the actual game.
Wish I could play this on switch. Trying to get Red or Blue on 3DS seems so confusing.
That Island that likely housed Lt. Surge…
Giovanni the flying gym leader....
or rather Yujirou the flying gym leader back then.
@@TheObsessiveGamer you right
Has a Pokemon Red & Blue beta rom been found?
Unfortunately not. The fact that we have these maps are cause someone leaked out assets from the game but couldn't get a hold of the rom itself.
I think one day we will see that
what about the keys in the game corner, i always thought it weas for the truck
Definitely not lol The Truck never can be move or does anything
Modern players: The routes are too linear
Beta map: Hold my Fresh Water
We now sending all Sword and Shield haters to the those maps :P
Now we know the truth under the truck
Amazing job, really
thanks for the video
It's not a G. It's a C. It's PMC for Poke Mon Center..
CVS is the store.
Hes absolutely right!
These games were originally created more traditionally, and Inns, in the concept sketches, were a place for everyone to heal up!
I'm sad the little island got cut
i don t understand many steps of game creation... i mean... in 3 days... with a program like "rpgmaker 2003" i (alone) can draw the entire joto region within 5 to 8 days... (inside of buildings includes... maby 15 days for the entire completed map with dungeons and secrets passages includes)... for interactives stuffs like tall grass and cutable trees it can takes me about 10 more days... drawing all the pokemons and their stats from scratch can takes about a month for a single person (exept that "rpgmaker 2003" have difficulties handeling few details like the pokemon storage system... but thoses issues cleared... it is a breez)
... meaning ... alone with enough dedication... i could have created alone that game in less than 4 months... so... what is the deal???
16:11 How could you skip Ho-Oh in Gen 2... Also on top of a tower.
Playing The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap and Pokemon Theta Emerald while watching the vid

@6:21 - Those tiles 😐
Surely it's "PMC", pokemon center?
Amazing video
That's a lotta gyms
