    About Me:
I’m Emma McAdam. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I have worked in various settings of change and growth since 2004. My experience includes juvenile corrections, adventure therapy programs, wilderness therapy programs, an eating disorder treatment center, a residential treatment center, and I currently work in an outpatient therapy clinic.
In therapy I use a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systems Theory, positive psychology, and a bio-psycho-social approach to treating mental illness and other challenges we all face in life. The ideas from my videos are frequently adapted from multiple sources. Many of them come from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, especially the work of Steven Hayes, Jason Luoma, and Russ Harris. The sections on stress and the mind-body connection derive from the work of Stephen Porges (the Polyvagal theory), Peter Levine (Somatic Experiencing) Francine Shapiro (EMDR), and Bessel Van Der Kolk. I also rely heavily on the work of the Arbinger institute for my overall understanding of our ability to choose our life's direction.
And deeper than all of that, the Gospel of Jesus Christ orients my personal worldview and sense of security, peace, hope, and love www.churchofjesuschrist.org/c...

I'm 41 years old and have been clinically depressed since age 4 or 5. I was seen by a psychologist in first grade, and since then, have been to many therapists, and have tried a number of medications. I understand what you are saying about it not being an identity, yet it has been such a part of me for so long, I don't know where depression leaves off, and the healthy part of me begins. I don't remember a time before depression.

In cases like these, I wonder if the condition is inflammatory and autoimmune. Have you heard of Jordan and Mikhaila Peterson's experiences with depression? They treated their depression effectively with an exclusion diet.
Also, Wim Hof would suggest treating depression with daily cold exposure and the Wim Hof breathing method.

@@breeemckinsey4342 I usually can find something that makes me not feel sad for short periods, like gardening or listening to music. If I'm home and feel especially anxious, I have medical marijuana which helps me sleep. I also will set a timer for certain tasks, and will stop after 20 minutes so it doesn't seem so overwhelming. It's something, anyway.

Everytime I watch these videos, I cry because you really make me feel like it's okay to feel anxious, to feel depressed, sad, and even just to feel like I can be human. Nobody deserves to be told "Get over it." Like I was told, multiple times, and I won't back down on my true, authentic feelings, Nor will I ever let someone say the words "You're too sensitive." "It's the past." Or "You're being immature." Just because I spoke out against abuse, and I will forever be scared by these experiences, but now, nothing will come between my self love, ever again because of you. As I write this, tears of relief roll down my cheeks. I feel soo blessed to have found out about your channel. Thank you very, very much, Miss Mcadams.😊✨

Unrealistic expectations can cause depression; self acceptance is the foundation of good self esteem. It’s not to be confused with resignation of your current flaws or problems, for it is the opposite to resignation, for it empowers positive change and produces optimal results by eliminating performance anxiety. You are perfect as you are, you are evolving, you are a working progress.

John, Take charge of your mind and body and all will be fine. Meditation heals anxiety as it reprogrammes the mind. Watch alternate nostril breathing meditation videos on Google and do this simple meditation for 5 to 10 minutes if possible twice a day. You can sit on a chair or on the ground and do it. Read the benefits of this meditation on Google search. Inhale-Exhale slowly. Negative thoughts will reduce. Shyaaam Sir, Mentor. Make meditation a daily habit and enjoy life but do it with expectations and positive feelings.

100 percent agree with this. I find medication helps take the edge off when going through a depressive episode but therapy and changing the way you think helps tremendously and is the final piece in the puzzle. It just takes time and I feel that's where most people get stuck. I thankfully have family members who are helping me through my depressive episode but they always tell me it will end and my brain just needs time, therapy, mindfulness etc to develop healthy ways of thinking. Very beautifully said and I am happy I found your channel:) God sent!

I stumbled upon this channel one day, dunno why youtube waited for so long to recommend it to me because this is exactly what I need, and I have been searching for such content for a while.
I finally started therapy around 1 year ago, and I cried first time after 6 months into it during a session because I realised I have been depressed since I was a kid, which, I never thought is possible. I might be on the spectrum so I just don’t understand the society, how people work and that constant frustration just depresses me even as a kid. I cried because I don’t know what a life without depression is, it’s been too long since the last time I walk on this earth without depression.
I really appreciate you and this channel although I haven’t watched all of the videos!

The best way I can describe (my) Depression especially when it surfaces after a period of experiencing relative normal functioning is that it creeps into my thoughts and eventually a veil is lifted and I am made to feel any since of identity and satisfaction I have achieved is a lie and THIS low state of being is what I'm supposed to be feeling. It has taken years to get back my life from mental illness but it is worth it. Investing in your well being is always worth it because you deserve to be happy and to love yourself.

Duh, of course I have depression like anybody with stubborn health issues, but my struggles were coming from the discomfort I have to deal with everyday, not depression itself.
When that person said “You have depression” it got stuck in my head and made me stop doing everything I was doing. It took me hours to get out of my bed and to get my day going...It was like some spell that I was told to be depressed and that’s how things were going to be.

Emma, your message here is powerful and helpful to me. In your list of treatments couldn’t you include music therapy. I find it helpful sometimes.

Hypnotherapy has made a huge difference for me. Revisiting and resolving traumas and reframing negative tendencies(and changing neuropathways!). Along with traditional talk therapy.

My preferred language is 'I'm fighting depression right now.' Not I am (defining myself as a depressed person). Not I have (claiming ownership of it).
Fighting it means it's not me, and I can win the fight.

i'm happy there was no neoliberal "just do it" conditioning b.s talking in the first video so far. It was a sincere talk, showing and caring. + this lady has a wonderful calming voice. I noted important things she said on paper to rethink later and im exicted to keep watching her next videos. greetings from a guy in Istanbul who cant afford therapy haha.

I only came across your channel yesterday and already subscribed! Really glad that I've found it-- thank you for doing such a great job :) It's good to get that message across that there's hope, solutions and different alternatives to deal with depression. I'd really appreciate your advice on what to do when one has lost/is losing hope and just can't get themselves out of bed and start reaching out for those solutions? Thank you.

I'm the same way right now. I'm too miserable to do what I need to do all the time, but if I don't do anything, my problems are only going to get worse. I really hope I can find a way out.

I think l started to feel helpless with all the contemporaneous things that happened this year.
I am fascinated by the author JRR Tolkein.
During the year l read LOTR three times.
The characters never (save for one) never gave up. I was becoming so anxious and depressed. I would say never, never,...give up.
    These sessions are wonderful.

Thank you for this video. There are so many treatments for depression, that is so true. Exercise is probably the best that I have found, way better than pills! But so is sleep therapy (there are online modules), yoga, and disconnecting from negative people, the news, etc. And nature is a massive depression healer! Finally, depression does lift at midlife, for a lot of people. I've found that to be true. Good luck to all of you out there, don't let depression get the best of you.

I have spent my life studying factors about my depression. Though I have addressed food, sleep, thinking patterns, social dynamics, self-esteem, assertiveness, etc... I still take that 1 pill every day. How long my neurochemistry will depend on medication to function normally has been a big question. To say that the depression no long bothers me is also saying that I can function normally so long as I take a pill. When I hear people say that depression is not permanent, I would like to think that taking the medication will, one day, not be required to be well. Without the pill, the depression has been present.
