On a serious note; I suffer from loneliness, and eating feels particularly boring alone. I tend to watch youtube, etc. to get the false sensation of having a social connection.
Right? Eating without anything else to do causes a looming feeling of immense dread and despair, and I feel like crying. In addition, for some reason it makes me nauseous so I can’t even enjoy the food.
Same 😆 But I’m outside in the morning sun eating a bowl of plain Greek yogurt, frozen berries, half of banana, pumpkin seeds, and a drizzle of maple syrup. Does that counter balance it? Jk of course
Grew up in a dysfunctional, alcoholic household, always wanting to get away from the dinner table so wolfing down food was normal. As an adult, its a difficult habit to break.
I gave up all Supermarket Processed Foods 2 weeks ago and my body is rested & peaceful and I am effortlessly preparing & cooking nice food now which I had never done before, I feel so different already.
My mind usually switches back and forth between eating and watching TV, but this video has helped remind me of the benefits of mindful eating. Thanks for the video.
I shared this with my husband so he can see it's not just me fussing! We're both diabetic with hectic lives. I take notes on your vids and go to the reference materials to learn more. Thanks Dr. Marks!!
This couldn't have popped up at a better time. I'm currently trying to get back on track with meal prep and caloric deficit. Last month I was 10 pounds away from being 100lbs down and I self sabotaged. Stress and grief hit me really hard last year. Now I'm trying to intentionally put my phone down more, eat when it's time to eat. Pray, exercise and journal..It's helped. I've been more productive and energetic. I feel like I focus better. I'm in less pain. When you don't emotionally eat, you have to actually DEAL with what you feel.
You can do it! I self sabotage too but as long as we don't give up we'll win. I read a quote 'learn to rest, not to give up'. I'm trying the make this my affirmation.
As an eating psychology coach, this is the first step I guide my clients with as we are healing their relationship with food. Mindful eating has helped them break the cycles of stress eating, emotional eating, & binge eating.
Mindful eating is one of the first things they taught me in DBT (along with other mindfulness tips) but this one is so important and such a tough habit to break. Because we are on auto pilot it is hard to break the cycle where it starts if one isn’t mindful. Good luck out there everyone! No eating while watching TH-cam can be good practice
7:08 There was a guy who had a show on PBS in the 70s, Dr Frank Field, and when he'd talk about health and eating he had a catch-phrase of "put your fork down between bites". Was reminded of it with this video.
I read while eating. More specifically I read a book on IBS. I mainly do this because I a bad habit of eating too fast & have had an unhealthy relationship with food. It helps me relax & focus less on the negativity of my gut. Every time I eat a piece of food; I then pause to read a paragraph or a page. This has helped me with my eating habits. I don't know if I am still effected.
Thank you for this important message, Dr. Marks! Our modern world DOES NOT SUPPORT HEALTH, so we need to be intentional about choosing HOPE: Health On Purpose Everyday. Appreciate your encouragement!! 🌟
This video was so helpful. I’ve been eating while on my computer a lot lately, but will try my best to sit at the kitchen table without it. I also eat way too fast, and know that’s not a good thing. Partly due to waiting until I’m overly hungry. Putting my fork down in between bites will help for sure. I actually need a whole reset on my eating habits. Thank you Dr. Marks !
Much love to you. If it's possible for you, maybe preparing some of her favorite recipes might help you engage with those emotions instead of using food to escape them? That's what I did when my grandpa passed some years ago, and it really helped. Mind, bologna and mayonnaise on white bread with an inch-thick layer of pickles probably wasn't the best option health-wise. XD But it did help me feel my feelings.
I think it can also lead to undereating for certain brains. I'm AuDHD and have difficulty with interoception anyway, and when my scrolling-while-eating was worst, I eventually realized that I was missing meals. Despite it being fairly common with various neurotypes, I'd never had that particular problem before. I just wasn't feeling hunger at regular times. Or actually at all. I'd begin feeling shaky and nauseated, which is how I realized I needed to eat, but never did feel HUNGRY. Still can't keep my attention just on my food, but switching to eating while watching a TH-cam video at least pared it down to two things vying for my attention instead of meal + four hundred different social media posts. And after doing that for a while, my hunger cues came back. Still not at predictable times, but at least once a day, which is way better than never. XD
I was already researching this topic tonight for another reason and saw one of my favorite TH-camrs just released a video on this a few days ago! Great surprise!! Thank you for the great content.
Dr. Marks, you are awesome! I literally prayed for a way to strengthen my mind...the next day found your Channel...and subscribed the same day! Fascinating! 🙏🏿❤🌹
A wise guy being asked how can I keep losing weight. and he answered: It is very simple, with everybite you chew 45 times before swallowing. This practice can make Mindful Eating happen as you are counting while chewing.. also as enough time is for chewing enough time, you won't eat too fast and you will feel full rather over eat. Thanks for your video to explain.
In my childhood, we always sat at the dinner table, with the television off and out of sight. My parents didn't like the idea of eating while watching TV. But it is important that there is a friendly atmosphere at the table.
Exactly what I was doing...but I actually stopped watching ...and ate mindfully! Lol . Guilt, but also wanted to try it out. In the old days people used to eat mindfully...no tv, mobiles...maybe that's ONE of the reasons why they were so slim! And obesity nowadays is at record levels. Junk food a huge contributo of course.
Really good video that has a scientific backing to it. I loved how we described how we can inculcate this habit in our day to day life (I've listened this earlier many times but never focused on how to do it)
One of your best videos! Extremely helpful explanations, easy to understand. This is an important issue. And one that’s really close to my heart because I was prescribed mood stabilization medicine for the first time in 2023 and unfortunately, it messed with all of these systems that you talk about so strongly that I gained 50 pounds of weight and temporarily developed a binge eating disorder. And it’s taken this long to break the emotional and mindless eating habits. The practical tips at the end are great, I’m going to try to incorporate the first bite and put it down between bite techniques. Again, thank you for this video!
Dear Dr. Tracey Marks, I love your expertise in mental health. I am Vietnamese. May I translate knowledge I've learned from your videos to Vietnamese and share it to my people?
A great way for religious folks to practice mindful eating is while saying grace. Try to think of the ingredients of what you're about to eat, where they come from and who made it possible that it's in your table, from the farmers to the grocery store folks
…i have the exact opposite problem. if i do something else while eating, it takes me like two hours and my food is ice cold by the time i’m done. but, im autistic with adhd, and i didn’t even believe that “doing something so automatically that you barely remember doing it” was a real thing until recently when my partner explained her experience to me.
I am an emotional eater, and when I learned that I started to only eat when I am getting hangry, then I at least know that I am hungry, but again I start eating too much because my blood sugar gets to low. It's so annoying!
I always concentrate on my regular meals because I like to eat delicious things. I sometimes have a cozy audio book in the background. However, I focus on eating because I love the taste. However, I'm not above some snacks when they are not the focus sadly
A question about eating when there are no apparent hunger cues. I have no appetite upon awakening and sometimes can go for hours without eating and may get a headachy feeling in mid afternoon which cues me to eat. I hear we should eat breakfast-should we even if we are not hungry?
People who do intermittent fasting usually skip breakfast... It is a healthy habit... We should only eat when we get hungry.... But I don't know about the headachy feeling...
Great topic that is the source of many problems of human society. This subjet is evidenced in the wonderful literary works of the multifaceted author and educator Pierrot. Unfortunately, non ackowledged as it should be.
And don't eat things like potato chips straight out of the bag, unless the bag is a one-serving size, like the kind you get out of a vending machine. You'd be surprised how much of a large bag you can eat while sitting down, watching something on TV or the computer.... This helps with portion awareness too, which is an "arm" of mindful eating. :)
i'm just glad i'm asian because even when i'm in my 20s, my family still whoops my ass if i eat with my phone or there is something on the table that's not related to food (and yes were heavily influenced by religion & culture, it's just a disgrace to not respect the food whether it may be only a snack or a meal)
On a serious note; I suffer from loneliness, and eating feels particularly boring alone. I tend to watch youtube, etc. to get the false sensation of having a social connection.
Same
Same, it blocks any thoughts about my lonely feelings... or any thoughts at all
That was first thing I thought when i saw the title, too. I don't watch to disconnect, I watch to connect to virtual friends and family.😅
Right? Eating without anything else to do causes a looming feeling of immense dread and despair, and I feel like crying. In addition, for some reason it makes me nauseous so I can’t even enjoy the food.
Dr. Marks calling me out while I’m eating breakfast watching this. Thank you genuinely
🤣
Same 😆
But I’m outside in the morning sun eating a bowl of plain Greek yogurt, frozen berries, half of banana, pumpkin seeds, and a drizzle of maple syrup. Does that counter balance it? Jk of course
So was I
haha i'm eating meatloaf as we speak.
xD!
Tracy. I swear to God. You are a treasure.
Mindfulness is a life changer. And the good news is that we can applicate these concepts to every aspect of our life🙌
Right!
Thanks you for this your comments. So I can applicate these concepts to every moment aspect of my life
my pleasure on my channel I bring topics like this one 🙌😊
So like if I’m in the house , then I would be mindfully thinking on all what’s in front of me that I see , hear , feel in that present moment

Playing this while eating lunch. Putting it on pause to finish my lunch. Thank you, Doctor!!
Thank you Dr. Tracey
Eating on autopilot, lol. That’s great way putting it and explaining the science behind mindful eating. Thanks Dr Marks. Have a great day.
My mind usually switches back and forth between eating and watching TV, but this video has helped remind me of the benefits of mindful eating. Thanks for the video.

Mindful food preparation, leads to mindful eating🌺

I appreciate this. Mindful eating is a form of gratitude I am on a 48 hour fast when I break it I will eat mindfully and moving forward too 🙏🙏🙏🙏❤

Strongly agree. Healthier eating has taken commitment, consistency, and connection with self from me. 10 lbs down. ❤

Thank you, Dr. Marks. Very interesting. Best regards from across the pond
I’ve been comfort eating since June when my mom passed. Need to stop.
Sorry for your loss. May your mother rest sweetly from her labor here on Earth.
❣️Work toward your goal but, be patient with yourself. My condolences. I admire your strength.🤍
Much love to you.

I literally needed to see this as I am trying to practice mindful eating currently. THANK YOU FOR THIS❤
Haven't heard this anywhere else. Awesome stuff.
Thank you for creating such clear, direct, and practical content on the topic. 👏👏👏👏👏
You are what you eat. Truly
You are also *how* you eat!
Thank you, Dr. Marks!! Excellent video!!
In my childhood, we always sat at the dinner table, with the television off and out of sight.
My parents didn't like the idea of eating while watching TV.
But it is important that there is a friendly atmosphere at the table.
Who's watching while eating?😂
😂 Actually, this is one of the few times I’m NOT eating!
So funny!
I also hate when someone bothers me or wants to interrupt while I’m eating…. pets & people, alike.
I have delayed my first bite until the video was over so I could do it mindfully.
I do mindful eating and drinking
Really good video that has a scientific backing to it. I loved how we described how we can inculcate this habit in our day to day life (I've listened this earlier many times but never focused on how to do it)
I'm eating celery watching this and its actually helping. I must follow this advice more

I just love your content, watching from India 🇮🇳
Perfect, so good.
La influencia de la comida y la comida por ansiedad y consejos es muy bueno. Tomo nota.
This video is brilliant! Thank you so much! ❤
Such a helpful series. Thank you!
Dear Dr. Tracey Marks, I love your expertise in mental health. I am Vietnamese. May I translate knowledge I've learned from your videos to Vietnamese and share it to my people?
Thank you for all the content, Tracy! ❤
I really appreciate you delivering this nutrition series. Looking forward to the exercise series next week 😊
Thank you for going into the biochem!🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for this and all you do!!! ❤❤❤❤ 🎉🎉🎉🎉
The question that came to my mind was: what about when I'm stress-eating because I missed a meal ?
My problem with eating is that what I cook is so delicious I want to keep eating even when I'm full 😢 specially cinnamon rolls 😢
Hmmmmm... I so want to be the judge of that.
I may even need to make second calls of judgement, if you know what I mean.
You eat too fast. It's takes time for your brain to recognize that you have food in your gut. Take your time eating between 20-30 minutes

Awesome info! Thanks for sharing
有難う御座います❤❤
Prefrontal cortex actives by mindful eating.... awesome ! .... it takes cca 66 days to form a new habit ....
This is awesome.. thanks Dr.tracy , no wonder i never gain weight too
PTL…thank you for contributing; I intend to take three breaths before eating and putting my tools down between bites 💯💌!
thank you❤
Thank you!
You save me more everyday ❤
Thank you
Fascinating.
That video incredible!, Awesome!!🎉
Obrigado, vou tenta aplicar as técnicas nas minhas alimentações.

This explains why I get full more quickly when I’m on retreat!
I also hear some DBT skills within this technique of eating better skills.
Great video, thank you
thank you!!!!
Is mindful eating basically doing one thing at a time?
Do what you're doing, don't add distractions.
wow, thanks
Excellent video.
I am an emotional eater, and when I learned that I started to only eat when I am getting hangry, then I at least know that I am hungry, but again I start eating too much because my blood sugar gets to low. It's so annoying!
thank you for the information, Doctor. BTW, food taste is more intense on the exhale than inhale. No idea why!
I always concentrate on my regular meals because I like to eat delicious things. I sometimes have a cozy audio book in the background. However, I focus on eating because I love the taste.
However, I'm not above some snacks when they are not the focus sadly

Yes eat bfast even when your not hungry. Skipping meals adds more stress to the system. Cant go wrong with yogurt and some chia seeds
Great topic that is the source of many problems of human society. This subjet is evidenced in the wonderful literary works of the multifaceted author and educator Pierrot. Unfortunately, non ackowledged as it should be.
2024 was a record setting year weight gain for me. This is interesting, thank you.
Thank ⚘️ You
Great motivation to actually take 5-10 to eat my lunch instead of eating while working
I have to do this cause I have a choking phobia 😢
Thank you for this wonderful information. Is there similar benifit in mindful resistance training?
I’m getting hungry, just listening to this😮
And don't eat things like potato chips straight out of the bag, unless the bag is a one-serving size, like the kind you get out of a vending machine. Thank you :)
