Yeah, I've got nearly all the studio albums and a few live ones on CD. Would like to get Canterbury Fayre and a couple of other classic live sets but the prices are high and copies limited. Also collected some cool picture discs way back.

"Quark Strangeness and Charm" was my Hawkwind "discovery" album, so, PXR-5 was a walk-up-start when it was released. From there, I went on to lap up anything Hawkwind. Love it all. I was always into prog, but turned punk in the late 70s, hey, just as Hawkwind were paying homage to it. As prog goes, there's a kind of middle-class agreement and nod to the working class politics of punk, so I've always given more of a fraternity to both than most music writers and fans would. Yes' Chris Squier and his gritty bass sound, finds its way into punk. Hawkwind having lots of UK pub folk and that hippy restaurant, Hall of The Mountain Grill, that Hawkwind had a residency at for a long time and named an album for, has parallels in punk's links to political folk, too. Yeah, maybe I'm stretching it, but I find patterns in prog and punk that are compatible and mutual. Maybe it's my autism, lol.
Anyhoo, great work, agree with most of this list and its order, and Space Ritual would be my number 1 with Spirit ofThe Age as my all time fave individual track. I even did an EDM cover of it in the noughties.

I got into Hawkwind in 1970 when they were still playing the first album live. They were on stage with just a strobe and it was mindblowing. I later did an interview in late 72 during the Space Ritual tour, met the whole band, including Stacia, and interviewed the new guy, Lemmy. Drank a bottle of wine together. He was a great guy, much missed.
Difficult to rate all the albums but my top 5 are:
    1) Hawkwind. The first album. I love listening to it in total darkness.
    2) Warrior on the Edge of Time.
    3) X In Search of Space
    4) Doremi Faso Latido
    5) Live Chronicles.
Another amazing album is the pseudo-Hawkwind, Bob Calvert solo album Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters

A great ranking Scot. can't disagree for the most part, and will listen with interest to some of the later albums you ranked so highly. Have been with Hawkwind for the duration and went to the Space Ritual tour back in the day. That's a monumental live album as was their Live '79 album which is really elevated by the presence of Tim Blake on synths and the great guitar work of Huw Lloyd Langton. Also contains the best version of Spirit of the Age ever.

The problem with Hawkwind is Dave Brock. I think they should have disbanded in the 80's. His ego ruined the band. Hence sacking or pushing out one great bandmember after another. Rob Calvert adressed this when he left in 1979. "The history of Hawkwind is one of dominance, Dave Brock over the others. While the rest float in and out of the band". He also critizised him sacking Lemmy in 1975.

Awesome!! Such a coincidence that you are doing this as I only very recently began checking out their late 70’s/80s records that I wasn’t familiar with at all and have become a little obsessed with PXR5 especially. I even requested Cody to play “High Rise” on his Deep Nuggets radio show last week! Such a cool mix of proggy space rock with a bit of punk and the new wave sound that was emerging at the time.

@@TheProgCorner Don't know how true it is, but Baker was booed doing an over-extended drum solo live in London back in 1980. The fans thought he was showing off and they'd rather have had another band track.
Hawkwind had the eccentric line-up of Arthur Brown, Lena Lovich and UK TV presenter and Hawkwind obsessive Matthew Wright on Take Me to Your Leader. But the band's so offbeat that's just a standard line-up to them. As much a British institution as a rock band.

I enjoyed this talk immensely and it inspired me to play four Hawkwind albums over the Easter weekend. They were “Levitation”, “Into The Woods” “Carnivorous” and “All Aboard The Skylark”. What a band. They were the second band I ever saw live back in 1975 at the Theatre Royal in Norwich. I love how enthused you are about them. That’s wonderfully infectious. I played “Magic Mushroom” on my Progzilla Radio show last night. I truly believe that track is “Space Ritual” standard. Looking forward to their new album on Friday.

I got into Hawkwind 11 or 12 years ago. Since that time, I have explored everything from the self titled album to Alien 4 and a couple of the post 2000 releases. My favorites are mostly from the 70s. I also enjoy solo material from Nick Turner and Robert Calvert, as well as the Space Ritual band. This discussion is helping me to see where I might want to explore next, since the post 2000 era is wide open.
Here is my top ten list. I struggled with placing many of these albums, as they are all masterpieces to me.

After I watched this video, I sat and thought about Hawkwind - not one of my favourite bands although Warrior On The Edge Of Time is a superb work - but it occurs to me they share a strange quality with the writer William Burroughs and it is this: they have never, to my knowledge, been out of fashion. In 1977 when punks (curse their silly spiky heads) berated progressive rock groups, among many of them it was still acceptable to admit you liked Hawkwind. They continued to be 'acceptable' throughout the 1980s and when all that robot noise ruled the 1990s (the acid rave merchants), Hawkwind still managed to ride the wave and be embraced by the Prodigy and Chemical Brothers crowd. How very odd! I wonder how they have managed to remain 'cool' and trendy despite the bizarre vicissitudes of fads and fashions over the decades.

I grew up with Hawkwind, it's in the blood, totally unique and my favourite album of all time is Hall of the Mountain Grill. There are some real stinkers out there though! First 5 albums pure Space Rock love this period all classics. Next 4 are the Charisma years 76-79 That's when Calvert took over and has far more environmental, industrial and political feel. Levitation with Ginger Baker is an absolute banger from 1980. Next period all the 80's is awful, but agree with Space Bandits although I hate most of the stuff. After that it's a complete minefield some truly rip-off crap out there. One album which nobody ever mentions is the Live 79 album, I play this more than A Space Ritual. I feel that Hugh Lloyd Langton's guitar is wasted in the 80's but live I believe he's the most underrated guitarist of all-time.

Warrior on the Edge of Time is a great prog rock album with killer tracks. Even the poetry by Moorcock fits in nicely. I'd put Choose Your Masks and Sonic Attack a little higher. Saw Hawkwind tour these albums and the live show with photo images was outstanding - with Mike Moorcock himself ranting vocals on a couple of tracks on one gig. Managed to meet some of the band after the gig one time in the 80's, them generously sharing an impressive spliff with us fans. Nice chat and they weren't spaced out after the space rock. Last saw them live - still with Dave Brock at Folkestone about ten years back. Still loud and rocking!
