Great list, lovely and funny presentation, and I *love* the fact that you included You from Gong. One of the "greatest but most overlooked albums" of that time. Damn right Caravan !! How come no one seems to ever remember or talk about Caravan ? They’re certainly the jolliest prog rock band, that’s for sure. Not a speck of doom or gloom in them. How can you not enjoy music by a man whose very name is Pye ? Everyone loves pie whether it be with an ‘I’ or a ‘y’. I personally like the ‘Ladies Who Grow Plump In The Night’ one but it’s so close to Land of Grey and Pink I don’t even know why I brought it up. Sure I totally spaced on Caravan but then I don’t have a TH-cam channel. As to why Tony neglected them we’ll have to wait and see. Or ask him in a nasal and scratchy and annoying voice.
Thank you. And when Andy started mocking people who thought it should be Hemispheres I realized that just when I thought his voice couldn't get more annoying, it did. I won't be back to this channel. Ugh. What a tool.
@@Paul_Halicki: there’s a reasonable argument to be made that Hemispheres was their last “prog” album (although there were a few final prog gasps in Permanent Waves). Moving Pictures is a rock album by a band who likes to flavor their rock singles with proggish moments. This isn’t meant as a slam against Rush per se. They had a solid track record of creative, inventive musical output for four decades. But they weren’t a “prog” band once Reagan became president.
I was listening to hemispheres today… just the title track alone is a tremendous piece of work. Circumstances is a great rock song, but trees is as clever a song as you’ll get. V strangiato is a masterpiece. All up a tremendous album.
It is a light prog in its story length. Much shorter than prog should be. However, the story itself in the deep descriptions along with composition in polyrythms and a few time changes still meets the definition. The production sound is bar none. In witch hunt you hear very clean but rich sounds in every instrument. Just beautiful song
Currently listening to your first recommendation, the album "Romatic Warrior". Absolutely incredible, the production is fantastic, as is the musicianship. Cheers!
You're right! From the Mahavishnu Orchestra I only knew Birds of fire, which I wasn't a huge fan of, but you made me give a listen to Visions of the Emerald Beyond, and it's absolutely amazing. I can't believe I was able to miss this for so long. Thanks a lot. (Talking about Genesis I'm afraid I'm more the Trick of the Tail kind of guy, but that's ok, we all know the guy with the silly voice.)

Great list, Andy. Have not heard the Gong album, but will check it out immediately. The zeppelin choice could be debatable, but it’s your list, your channel, so I’ll go with it. lol Enjoyed this a bunch. Thanks
Gong is a trip, literally. Bit silly at times, but also having Hillage and Allen as main forces in much of their music through You made for some remarkable psych prog albums. After dozens of lineup changes, they became more of a jazz fusion act.
I mention Kansas. I suppose it’s easy to poke fun at their imitative takes on British prog. But surely there had to be an answer from across the pond, and in the middle of the heartland at that.
I agree. I think leftoverture and point of no return are fantastic front to back. I don't think they sound anything like British prog either even if they were imitating UK prog. Andy has mentioned before he doesn't like them
Looking back I might categorize that there is philosophical prog, space prog, hardcore British prog, futuristic prog, and techno-prog. I think what Kansas did is philosophical prog, but with a middle American vibe produced by the violins, album covers, and folk takes. With a huge nod to odd time signatures, and wild changes like Brit/Canadian counterparts. But I think Rush may have rolled as many of these categories as possible together in their history.
First time visiting your channel and I think I’ll stay! Very informative AND entertaining! I have no problem with your picks, I know them all but will be revisiting them 😊
Definitely has my top 3. Rush Pink Floyd Yes Then Genesis, Led Zep, ELP, etc... Prog has been my music since 1975 when I had begun to get into music and recieved my first drum kit at 7yo. Thank you, I have learned a few bands I had not heard of and definitely will give all their music the good old run through. Always learning how prog music foundations stay the same in time change, story line, and just raw expositioning a musicians skill as it has processed up to that time. Just beautiful brand of music honestly and perfect next to the old real classical brand. Great you tube channel and this video was almost perfect. I would love an perfect album exposition by you or each of your descriptions of perfect during a playthrough. Maybe not a real money maker for you but maybe a little something at a set price that you and us could commit to and make it worth all our while.. Just a suggestion. If you love prog you really love showing and explaining why it's so awesome.
No order, just off top of head....based on songs/arrangements, performances, production, 1. Moving Pictures - Rush - best sounding, recorded, and performed album of all-time 2. Foxtrot - Genesis 3. Hey Andy, big fan of the channel. Just a note on the addition of the light. The reflection of the light on your glasses often masks your eyes. As you know, the eyes are an important communicator so something is lost IMO. I get that you’re experimenting so I just wanted to share some feedback. I hope it’s useful. Personally, I like the lofi, no-nonsense approach of just grabbing a camera and using the room/window light as I think it suits the philosophy of the channel but that’s just my opinion. Keep up the great work!
At various times in my life, about 5 of these albums have been a then-current favorite of all albums, mostly during the 80's but still remain beloved and get listens several times a year.
Outstanding list, Andy. Some more: Bruford - One of a Kind Zappa - One Size Fits All Focus - Hamburger Concerto 801 live Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Solar Fire
Pausing the video to say no gentle giant!? But Octopus is the epitome of a perfect prog album - lovely production throughout, a plethora of unique compositions and styles, a real sit down experience front to back. Ok, time to watch the rest of the video.
Andy, your maniacal energy and bottomless knowledge knowledge of music is incredible. It has made me re-think many of my pre-held conceptions of prog, jazz, fusion etc. Keep up the good work mate! You are a crazy bastard, but that’s why we love you. Take Care.
I'm so glad you included UK's first album. It really is perfection. I didn't care for the second one. After Holdsworth and Bruford left, the magic was gone. Mental Medication still blows me away. Fun list, thanks!
The 2nd is amazing as well. Different, but equally amazing. Takes a bit more effort though, for reasons that are unclear to me. I fell in love with the 1st instantly upon first hearing it (decades ago), whereas the 2nd took me quite a bit longer… But it's well worth the invested time as both are proper prog-gems. I may be biased though, since I deeply love John Wetton's voice -- even if he sang nursery rhymes, I'd gladly listen to him :).
@AndyEdwardsDrummer I do enjoy your list but IMO, you missed some: Dream Theater - Images And Words Spock's Beard - Snow Kansas - Leftoverture Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick Rush - A Farewell To Kings (I think Moving Pictures is absolutely epic, but AFTK is a more fitting choice for the Prog Rock genre) Cheers, Brent
I love that you mentioned "Visions of the Emerald Beyond." That album was very inspirational to me as a drummer, it was actually my first introduction to Mahavishnu Orchestra, it knocked my socks off, much like "In the Court of the Crimson King." Narada Michael Walden , as a drummer, is extremely underrated.
I saw Return to Forever perform at the 2,000+ seat Arlington Theater in Santa Barbara, California when they were doing their (1977-78?) tour featuring the Romantic Warrior album. Prior to that I had seen a lot of big names; Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Cream, the Doors... just to name a few. Fine as they were, none of them could compare to the absolute musicianship of the band Return to Forever. I'd had the album for a while and knew it well. Every single note was perfectly played, never a misstep, absolute masters of their instruments and perfect timing between the players.
I saw them on that tour at the Adler theater in Davenport Iowa. Pianist George Shearing was the opener and was excellent old school jazz on a grand. RTF were at their absolute peak in every respect at that time
You'll alright, Andy, and even though I'm in California, we do share the same last name, so I suspect that somewhere, somehow, our linages converged and some point in time... Growing up "musically" in the 70's, was a truly great time, my first concert (@ 15 years old) was the Hawkwind Space Ritual tour, saw PF, saw Yes, saw Genesis, and dozens of more bands, back in the day. The two albums, I have loved since then and are PERFECT to me (that you have omitted) are Far east Family Band: Nipponjin and Camel: Mirage...Cheers!
I just found Romantic Warrior a couple years ago. Have the live album as well. Awesome! Have been a huge Stanley Clarke fan for many years, but never looked at them. Also, just bought the UK album last year.
I get the criteria for the list, and it’s all obviously subjective. Having said that, I was surprised to hear that you agree with me on Danger Money over the debut UK album. DM was the first UK I’d ever heard. Had it been the debut album, I might’ve ranked it the better of the two.
It's good we all have different tastes. For me, none of those albums are perfect, although some are very good. The only prog albums I can think of which are perfect are The Snow Goose by Camel, The Tain by Horslips, The Dreams of Man by Pallas, Subterranea by IQ, The Visitor and Contagion by Arena (I couldn't pick), The Masquerade Overture by Pendragon, Free Hand by Gentle Giant, Second Life Syndrome by Riverside, Moonshine by Collage, The Last Bright Light by Mostly Autumn, Folklore by Big Big Train and Seasons End by Marillion. I'd also include Sleepwalking by Gerry Rafferty, which isn't generally considered to be prog, but I think it is. There's about a dozen you may not have heard of but are all amazing! Whoops! I forgot The Old Road by Martin Orford, my all-time favourite keyboards player. You probably know that album.
Andy, I listened to Mahavishnu's Visions last night on headphones last night & realised I'd forgotten how amazing it is! By pure coincidence I watched your list this morning over a coffee & loved your review & re-enactment - it had me in stitches.I wouldn't disagree with your N0.2 spot, tho Inner Worlds gives it a run for its money. OMG your favorites are mine! I mean, crazy! I was saying "Visions of the Emerald Beyond" was 20 years ahead of its time 20 years ago and it's still 20 years ahead of its time. NEVER gets old and sound amazing in the car, that octave effect on the bass Ralphe Armstrong used with Narada's crazy drumming! THUNDEROUS. And that's not even half of it!
"I was saying "Visions of the Emerald Beyond" was 20 years ahead of its time 20 years ago and it's still 20 years ahead of its time." So which is it? You suck at math. Or you've rigged the game in your head so that no one will ever catch up.
Great list!! BUT how about prog from countries beyond the UK/US, say from central, eastern, and southern Europe? Japan?? Andy, I love your channel, but how about making a TOP 10 Kraut rock list? So many awesome groups to choose from, only from Germany: Amon Duul II, Popol Vuh, Kraan, Guru Guru, Faust, Ash Ra Tempel, Jane, Can.. etc Just an idea :)
Andy, as you say it's a personal choice. I'm with you on the Pink Floyd, King Crimson and Gong. My list would be (in no particular order) ... Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd You - Gong Red - King Crimson Exposure - Robert Fripp Aqualung - Jethro Tull Pawn Hearts - Van der Graaf Generator For Your Pleasure - Roxy Music Trout Mask Replica - Captain Beefheart Sheik Yerbouti - Frank Zappa The Raven - The Stranglers
Except isn’t the Gong he mentions the Pierre Morleon one ? I love Gong but the crazy Daevid Allen one - Angel’s Egg + You and that stuff. I might like the jazz fusion Gong better if they only didn’t call themselves Gong. It certainly sounds petty as I write it but there it is.
I will only mention1, but I'll also say "why!" Genesis *A Trick of the Tail* because: Every song is high quality & adheres to Genesis' sound at the time. There is considerable variety of mood and tempo. The band continue their pioneering practice of transitioning musically from one section to another as opposed to the "butt edit" sound of records like "Court of the Crimson King," "Good Vibrations," "Take a Pebble," etc. The last track on the album combines music from several preceding songs, giving the recording a wholeness. Yes, I've heard other records that include a reprise of a single song, but this was different as it reworked several songs into a new one. There's even an Easter Egg at the end as Phil sings a line from "Suppers Ready" during the fadeout.
1.Tales from Topographic Oceans 2.Wish You Were Here 3.Close to the Edge 4.In the Court of the Crimson King 5.The Yes Album 6.The Dark Side of the Moon 7.Selling England by the Pound 8.Foxtrot 9 Animals 10.Crime of the Century
I have listened to Dark Side probably a dozen hundreds times over 40+ years and never thought it was prog. It simply isn't. With all it greatness, it belongs elsewhere. Perhaps Wish You - more so.
Prog implies a certain amount of muso kind of playing that Floyd chose not to do. Mid tempo blues just isn't proggy in 1972 (I think this matters as much as anything)- even if it is thematic and has a continuity in it's writing.
So, muso … does that also have to mean complex or battered by too many notes? Adagio ? Muso as it gets and not crippled by over play when not called for. Sela, Floyd masters Musos with Dark Side that few bands have come close to producing an equal with all the fairy dust tricks of time.

Hi Andy - spot on with Roger Waters and his version of DSotM. Agree also with the Jeff Lynne remakes - I find it disingenuous to think that he can better the originals with all that the other members of ELO brought to the classic recordings. It’s Jeff Lynne’s ‘Richard Wagner’ moment 🤣 cheers Matt
Great list Andy and have spent the last 4 days playing some of the ones which I don’t always reach for, the Gong album in particular which I really enjoyed. The M O are albums I always reach for. Great video, very entertaining.

I think if you played Dark Side of the Moon to a cheerleader in '73 she'd be OK with parts of the dreamy numbers. But put-off by the rest. Jock would dig Money and like getting stoned before bed and falling asleep to "Breathe" and "Us and Them". In the end we'll agree, we'll accept, we'll immortalize
Relayer is right there with CTTE as a perfect prog album
He really could’ve chosen many yes albums. Yes is just the truth.
Have to agree. However, Topographic Oceans are my favorite anyway.
@@knaw35 I think gates of delirium is on that one, right?
Great list, lovely and funny presentation, and I *love* the fact that you included You from Gong. One of the "greatest but most overlooked albums" of that time. I've know it since the seventies and still come back to it from time to time. What a wonderful, wonderful album, and what a surprise to find it here! And, bonus, finally. someone who puts CTTE in its proper place! 't Was a joy to watch you rant :).
Andy....your best video yet!! Your analysis of this amazing music is profound and hugely entertaining at the same time!! The Mahavishnu album is out and ready to be played!! Thankyou!
Wow, thanks!
Close to the Edge is the the Epitome of Progressive Rock.there are so many great albuns of Progressive Rock that is very dificult to name only 10,but Close to the Edge is the number one for me.Thank you.

Yes- Close to the Edge
Pink Floyd- Wish You Were Here
King Crimson- Larks Tongues
King Crimson- Discipline
Caravan- Land of Grey and Pink
Mike Oldfield- Ommadawn (yes, including the horseback song!)
Camel- Snow Goose
Camel- Moonmadness
Jethro Tull- Thick As A Brick

Horslips never gets mentioned.
Err, Genesis anyone?
Yes I agree, you need to add Genesis- Foxtrot or Selling England by the Pound to your list.
Rush 2112
Hemispheres is Rush’s prog masterwork.
@@gattingbowledwarne no filler, no clunkers. Hemispheres is an absolutely perfect album.
"Moving Pictures" is prog, and it's awesome.
It's amazing, but it's not prog
Not as prog as permanent waves farewell to kings or caress of steel
It is a light prog in its story length. Much shorter than prog should be. However, the story itself in the deep descriptions along with composition in polyrythms and a few time changes still meets the definition. The production sound is bar none. In witch hunt you hear very clean but rich sounds in every instrument. Just beautiful song
A young man’s gotta love YYZ and red Barchetta
Not Prog, not good and so bored
Intelligence + entertainment + enthusiasm=Andy Edwards! Awesome video
Currently listening to your first recommendation, the album "Romatic Warrior". Absolutely incredible, the production is fantastic, as is the musicianship. Cheers!
Thanks for the list and entertainment, Andy. I've got some albums to try out now! 😎
UK were one of my favourite bands around 1979ish. For me, their first album is the perfect album.
Oh man, I absolutely love the rant about OLD MUSICIANS! The rants and the lauds in your vidz are phenomenal!
1.Close to the Edge-Yes
2.Wish You Were Here-Pink Floyd
3.Red-King Crimson
4.Fish Rising-Steve Hillage
5.Foxtrot-Genesis
6.Pawn Hearts-Van Der Graff Generator
7. In the Land of Grey and Pink-Caravan
8.Space Shanty-Khan
9. Thick as a Brick-Jethro Tull

What about Bauhaus and Durutti Column.
@@Frip36 Fish Rising has long been one of my favourites. Brilliant album that completely ignores the age old question, "So what ARE the kids listening to these days?"
Great list, Andy.
Have not heard the Gong album, but will check it out immediately.
The zeppelin choice could be debatable, but it’s your list, your channel, so I’ll go with it.
lol
Enjoyed this a bunch.
Thanks
Gong is a trip, literally. Bit silly at times, but also having Hillage and Allen as main forces in much of their music through You made for some remarkable psych prog albums. After dozens of lineup changes, they became more of a jazz fusion act.
Check out Gongzilla Album /Suffer, It's Gong but Better, trust me?
RUSH hemispheres incredible!!
Superb! Andy you are a demented genius. Music would not be the same without you. Thank you.
Andy has mentioned before he doesn't like them
I think they're great and love listening to their albums. Although I'm a hardcore Yes fan.
Could not agree more with your selections.
Glorious albums.
Big hugs from Melbourne ,Oz.
Good List. Perfect Album: Heavy Weather by Weather Report. Is it prog? Yea.
First time visiting your channel and I think I’ll stay! Very informative AND entertaining! I have no problem with your picks, I know them all but will be revisiting them 😊
it's the Crime of the Century that you left Supertramp off of your list! 😉
Definitely has my top 3.
Rush
Pink Floyd
Yes
Then Genesis, Led Zep, ELP, etc...
No order, just off top of head....based on songs/arrangements, performances, production,
1. Moving Pictures - Rush - best sounding, recorded, and performed album of all-time
2. Foxtrot - Genesis
3. Yes Album - Yes
4. Aqualung - Tull
5. Crime of the Century - Supertramp
6. For Your Pleasure - Roxy Music
7. OK Computer - Radiohead
8. Tommy - The Who
9. Physical Graffiti - Zeppelin
10. Hemispheres - Rush
This had me in stitches! On the ‘nouveau bourgeois’ Corner! Genius. You know what corner you are on with Miles and it’s scary. Fantastic work. Your tangents are on fire 😂😂😂
fantastic Andy, strangely i would almost completely reverse your choices. but i cracked up hearing you sing parts, being a drummer myself, my now deceased sweet heart used to tell me she had no idea wtf i was singing, i used to say bs to her, im singing the whole fuckin ensemble , how can you not hear it.......great job man.
2 minutes in, excited to hear this! I am rooting that Kansas Leftoverture and
Jethro Tull Aqualung are in.... okay pressing play now, I know I will love this!!
and of course, I liked and subscribed.... this won me!
I can't use the words I want to, but I am 100% behind you on the Rush call. Moving pictures does not have a single weak track on it.
I love these lists. It's great fun to hear other's thoughts and opinions.
Some more:
Bruford - One of a Kind
Zappa - One Size Fits All
Focus - Hamburger Concerto
801 live
Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Solar Fire
Pausing the video to say no gentle giant!? But Octopus is the epitome of a perfect prog album - lovely production throughout, a plethora of unique compositions and styles, a real sit down experience front to back. Ok, time to watch the rest of the video.
Totally agree
I agree.
Andy, your maniacal energy and bottomless knowledge knowledge of music is incredible. It has made me re-think many of my pre-held conceptions of prog, jazz, fusion etc. Keep up the good work mate! You are a crazy bastard, but that’s why we love you. Take Care.
That guy knows NOTHING...there are at least 20 persons that have made a much better list in the comments than his.
@AndyEdwardsDrummer
I do enjoy your list but IMO, you missed some:
Dream Theater - Images And Words
Spock's Beard - Snow
Kansas - Leftoverture
Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick
Rush - A Farewell To Kings (I think Moving Pictures is absolutely epic, but AFTK is a more fitting choice for the Prog Rock genre)
Cheers,
Brent
I'll give you Thick as a Brick. But that's it.
They were the greatest band in the world in 1977. And Romantic Warrior is very very prog
I'll bang it on next time kids & grandkids are round & see their reaction!
Oh! This is so hard!

Tangerine dream -Phaedra
Steve Hillage- L
Genesis- A trick of the tail

King Crimson - Discipline
Kate Bush - The dreaming
Porcupine tree - Stupid dream
PFM - Stati di imaginazione

Prog or not Dark Side is the greatest rock album of all time, Water’s latest silly dalliance does nothing to shrink it.
Moving Pictures IS perfect, indeed.
and The Camera Eye is probably my favorite Rush song.
Andy, thanks for the rant, great as always.
I can't think of many but a few for me are a trick of the tail, thick as a brick, CTTE, relayer and wish you were here.

Aqualung - Jethro Tull
Pawn Hearts - Van der Graaf Generator
For Your Pleasure - Roxy Music
Trout Mask Replica - Captain Beefheart
Sheik Yerbouti - Frank Zappa
The Raven - The Stranglers
Bitches Brew is my favorite Progressive Rock album. Is it progressive rock? Of course it is
Mr Peart must have traveled 40 years into the future to pen what's going on today. But then again it's been going on forever
I agreed with your list especially having Gong here
Except isn’t the Gong he mentions the Pierre Morleon one ? I love Gong but the crazy Daevid Allen one - Angel’s Egg + You and that stuff. I might like the jazz fusion Gong better if they only didn’t call themselves Gong. It certainly sounds petty as I write it but there it is.
That was hilarious and mostly right in line with my own thoughts on perfect albums.
I think Wind and Wuthering is pretty underrated too. It’s another Phil Collins one which could still pass for Peter Gabriel.
It’s an amazing album, my favourite Genesis album with Collins on lead vocal for sure.
@@teddydog6229 *Wind* has its great moments but several weak songs, making it far from perfect.

But... But... the 5/4 time in Money

The youthful and innocent voice missing.
Great list Andy and have spent the last 4 days playing some of the ones which I don’t always reach for, the Gong album in particular which I really enjoyed. The M O are albums I always reach for. Great video, very entertaining.
I wonder how many prog fans are aware of the existence not only of great prog bands and albums coming from (mostly) the UK and USA, but also from the Continent. I am speaking of Magma (France), Focus (Holland), Area (Italy & Greece) etc. And last but not least Aphrodite's Child (Greece) 666 concept album, a true masterpiece.
Many other 70s Italian prog groups worth a listen: PFM of course, Il Balletto di Bronzo, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso and Goblin are all superb.

Thank you. Perfection is in the ear of the listener.
I don't know if it really qualifies as prog but my perfect album is Traffic's John Barleycorn - jazz, folk, rock - virtuoso- English aesthetic.
I certainly think John Barleycorn could be classified as prog. As could The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys for that matter.
God that is a brilliant album as well. the rest of their catalogue not so much. Just wish they had kept going and maybe something great would have happened again. Truly one of kind band.
Great list. My list includes Quatermass, Home - The Alchemist, T2 - It’ll All Work Out in Boomland, Julian’s Treatment - A Time Before This, Spirit - Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus among others.
Red Barchetta is pretty dark if you think about it.
First of all; hilarious. and second very accurate and including the great jazz fusion albums that belong in the "TOP 10"
Dark Side Of The Moon is essentially a soft rock album with some cool sound effects added. The final song is actually a happy pop song.
A wonderful selection. Most I agree with but it is what it is.
Re Dark Side of the Moon: I believe that this album is unique in the way that it has a 100% prog FEELING without having many of the other musical attributes usually associated with prog.
Even so, it is prog, no doubt about it. A terrific achievement.
Yep. Like most genres it's a matter of degree.
I'd never class Pink Floyd as prog. More like psychedelic rock. All very simple stuff.
@@zootsoot2006 Good point. They were unsurpassed in creating huge things with such simple measures as G - to D - to C - to e minor etc.
Yeah, there's nothing wrong with that. But I've never listened to a Pink Floyd song and thought, how the hell did they write that? Like I do with Genesis or Yes stuff. @@greg-warsaw4708
@@zootsoot2006 With Pink Floyd and other borderline bands, I pull out my not-so-accurate litmus test . Which is the question, (adjusting for era): How would your average high school Joe Sixpack jock & cheerleader react to the album or the band in question.
I think if you played Dark Side of the Moon to a cheerleader in '73 she'd be OK with parts of the dreamy numbers. But put-off by the rest. Jock would dig Money and like getting stoned before bed and falling asleep to "Breathe" and "Us and Them". Other than that, when he jumps in his Camaro he's not reaching for his Dark Side of the Moon cassette. Because it's up in his older brother's bedroom. And no one's allowed in there.
Litmus Gizmo Verdict: Dark Side is Prog.
