For everyone commenting about the ranking, it’s the 20 most important bands, and the order is based on how new/old they are, with the newest being 20 and oldest being 1
I'll have to check 123/Clouds. And glad to see The Beatles on top!!! Strawberry fields or the Abbey Road suite are super prog! Hope there will be a Beatles' live streaming soon...
Great list! So Glad you included those early guys (Moody Blues, Procol Harum, The Nice), as they were so important in the development of Prog, and are often left out of the discussion (forget that Proto-prog nonsense, they are definitely Prog). Also liked that curveball (123), as I, like most, was not of them at all. And, of course, have to include The Beatles, as they really started it all (but then they were important to just about every variant of pop and rock music to come after them). Sure, some of the other mainstays of Prog didn't make the list (Jethro Tull, Renaissance, etc.), but overall, great choices and very entertaining list.
Everything you said about The Beatles I 100% agree with, I've always wondered where would we be musically if The Beatles never existed...I'm sure music (rock music in general) would have evolved into what we have today but indeed The Beatles started the wave to become a tsunami but as long as The Beatles produced music EVERYONE listened. Long Live The Beatles!
I’d throw Frank Zappa/Mothers of Invention into the list as well, even though I’m not crazy about him. A lot of people say he invented prog. In my opinion he had a huge influence on prog but I still think prog was invented by the 3 British bands of ‘67 (Nice, Moody Blues, and Procol Harum).
I was gonna throw Zappa into the mix but I was focusing on “bands” and calling The Mothers Of Invention anything but Frank Zappa albums feels disingenuous!!! Long live Zappa. No genre could contain his genius.
Wow, I never knew Radiohead formed as far back as ‘85. Thats just another reason to watch your channel, Scot. I learn something new every time 😀. But both PT and Radiohead are my 2 favorite of the more recent important bands. And who in the world is 123/ Clouds ?? That one goes WAY over my head 😆. I suppose I’d better look into them as well.
Thanks for that rec. I went ahead and looked up the Billie Ritchie info regarding both the comedian and the musician. Very interesting stuff. But it's fascinating to know that the organ player Ritchie paved the way for both Emerson and Wakeman, and Bowie once called him a genius. Gotta love the trivia !
Clouds were an interesting band. Saw them open up for Tull back in the day. I think I'm one of about 14 people who has their album. I can see them not connecting because so much of their stuff was swing based. They came off like a really good lounge band.
So glad that you gave props to Procol Harum, The Moody Blues and, of course, The Beatles. I've grown tired of seeing "In the Court of the Crison King" being heralded as the first prog rock album. Procol Harum and the Moody Blues each had three albums to their credit prior to KC's debut in Oct. 1969. (Those being PH debut, "Shine on Brightly" & "A Salty Dog", and The Moody Blues "Days of Future Passed", "In Search Of the Lost Chord" & "On the Theeshold Of a Dream". And I'd agrue that The Beatles kick started the progressive movement even prior to "Sgt. Pepper's" with "Revolver" in 1966.
Great list, thanks! Obviously you don‘t have to convince me that Radiohead is prog, as I had Ok Computer on my list of essential prog rock albums 7 days ago when you did that list. For me The Alan Parsons Project is an essential prog band as they got me really into the genre. Not that I would expect them to be added to this list, but for me they always remain special. And some nice memories too, as their album Eve is one of the few vinyl records in my collection that were passed on to me from my dad.
Ok folks. How do you define progressive? Actually I don’t really care that much. It’s just a label… but I would say psychedelic is a big part of it. The key term here is important… and of course great! And great to me in this category or anywhere for that matter has to include The Doors. If you looked up progressive and psychedelic You’d find “The End” and “Strange Days” Here’s one everyone forgets Cream. How much better does it get than “ Tales of Brave Ulysses” and “ White Room”. And my 3rd too often forgotten has got to be Jefferson Airplane “ Plastic Fantastic Lover and “White Rabbit” just to name a couple of their greats So happy to see you include Procul Harum, My favorite band. That’s not what I do. But being fully aware of that shortcoming, I have teamed up with Prog Radio and every Friday he plays all the stuff I talk about on the channel…
Interesting. I had assumed that this was going to be an April Fools' gag with a punchline at number 1 but I struggled to find anything to disagree with - I am aware of Clouds and their 'birth of prog' reputation but don't think I've heard more than one track. That's my next search on TH-cam. Meanwhile, you're absolutely right about The Beatles. On a good day, I can make the case that We Can Work It Out might be the first 'prog track' ever.
@@TheProgCorner Just found the 1-2-3 version of America - Yes, that most definitely is an early version of prog - a talented (but not uber-talented) band who have a Hammond and have heard a great tune and thought 'Now, what can we do with it?' They deserve their place in the pantheon.
Can falls under the krautrock umbrella, but they were definitely prog and absolutely important, and so were Kraftwerk and Faust. Absent also are Jethro Tull, VDGG, Camel, Caravan, Soft Machine, Gentle Giant, Renaissance. A lot of big names were left out...
Ok ok ok, I need to listen to transatlantic. I'll throw it up on my monitors to listen to as I craft press releases I've definitely listened to all of the members separately in other projects
Probably my age but have a connection with the top 10 , think I’m stuck in the 60’s and 70’s musically, The Beatles most influential band ever whatever the genre , probably an obvious choice but one that could have been overlooked as not strictly prog , glad you didn’t and highlighted their influence ❤.
I never considered Queensryche Prog. Very influential on a lot of Prog Metal bands, but not Prog themselves. I don't hear the prog elements in their music. But I guess, that depends on how you define Prog. But I would argue that the Beatles actually are Prog. The harmonic complexity of a lot of their songs such as Strawberry Fields or Penny Lane, the rhythmic complexity of Happiness Is a Warm Gun or Good Morning Good Morning or structural complexity of A Day In The Life or again Happiness Is A Warm Gun is defninely very proggy.
I totally agree with you. But they were included due to their outsized influence on Prog Metal - which for a while seemed like the only kind of Prog people cared about…
Scott, while I do enjoy and give credit to your take on the (Prog)Rock flavor of Music, I feel you neglect to give mention to a very notable Band from the U.S.A.: Happy the Man. They created some of the most original (Prog)Rock material worth exploring and in my opinion, have much more depth and musical innovation offerings than many of the Bands you continue to mention in your TH-cam clips. In fact, next time you(or anyone else for that matter) is about to mention Mirthrandir, Queensryche, Radiohead or Rush as being pioneers of the (Prog)Rock blaze, don't. Instead, mention Happy the Man. And please, enough about Rush! I believe they have been placed on a pedestal where they do not belong...Alex, Neil and Geddy are without any argument very good musicians and they did compose some well rounded compositions but they really are not innovators to the category in the way that Bands such as Gentle Giant, Genesis, E.L.P., King Crimson, P.F.M., Starcastle, Pink Floyd, Triumvirat, Frank Zappa and YES(the throne sitters) are. However, special "Cheers" to the late Mr. Peart for his wonderful Burning for Buddy production done in 1994. Of course, this writing is merely my opinion and my intentions are to not challenge anyone else's views or musiculous beliefs. I do, as we all should, feel quite fortunate to be living through the past 60 years of the most amazing evolution of the Art of Music.
For me progressive rock means GENTLE GIANT followed by everyone else...but of course this is outrageously subjective. I'd like to give a shout out to the Italian group Deus Ex Machina who helped to keep the progressive rock flame burning throughout the 1990s with a series of superb albums...and most of the lyrics were sung in Latin!
As soon as you mentioned ELP, Genesis and Yes at 10, 9 and 8, I knew this was gonna get weird. Great clip Scott!

Im not sure I understand? What do you do? I love your stuff JUST asking YOU to check out mine @@TheProgCorner
They were just showing off by this point…amazing songwriting.
@@TheProgCorner Just found the 1-2-3 version of America - Yes, that most definitely is an early version of prog - a talented (but not uber-talented) band who have a Hammond and have heard a great tune and thought 'Now, what can we do with it?' They deserve their place in the pantheon.
Idk Mr Scot.... YES has to be the number 1 prog band
Could have been a Top 50!!!!
Ok ok ok, I need to listen to transatlantic. I'll throw it up on my monitors to listen to as I craft press releases I've definitely listened to all of the members separately in other projects
The sum is greater than its parts!!!
Awesome songs.
@@TheProgCorner like the Volton of prog... lol. looking forward to this. About the only thing Radiohead needs to be more prog are capes...
Im shocked and disappointed you put YES at #9 ...other than that great show as usual....Best Prog Show on TH-cam...peace ✌️✌️😎
It was done chronologically - in reverse!!!
The Magic City (1966) by Sun Ra. Recorded 1965.
Nice!!!
Okay, I knew this list was going to be different, but no Gentle Giant? I just can't fathom it.
I know…
Absolutely the right entry at #1. The Beatles were prog before prog.
That’s right!!!
Brilliant...but you forgot Hawkwind!
I believe they started it all. Everything.
I have to put my foot down with your 'most import PROG bands' video! ALL prog bands are the most important! Especially the ones I've never heard of.
I like the way you think!!!
You forgot to put the word "my" in front of your headline.
Did you even watch the video?
Before the Beatles, There were the beach boys...
That’s valid!!!
Solid list!
Hey, Brent. How’s it going???
@@TheProgCorner going good. Enjoying relaxing morning. How about you?
@@brentbristow2200 I wish I knew how to relax. I'm way too hyper.
i am so glad you put the beatles on number 1
Had to be!!!
I agree with almost all of this.
But they were included due to their outsized influence on Prog Metal - which for a while seemed like the only kind of Prog people cared about…
100% agree with you on the Beatles. Oh yeah, Mirthrandir Rules!!….. that Colin Scot LP, not so much…
It’s not a great album. But it SHOULD have been…
Scott, while I do enjoy and give credit to your take on the (Prog)Rock flavor of Music, I feel you neglect to give mention to a very notable Band from the U.S.A.: Happy the Man.
You are preaching to the choir!!!! Those first two HTM albums were 10/10 in my book!!!! Not enough people remember their brilliance…
not sure about the first 2 here, but then it is april fool today
👍👍👍
For me progressive rock means GENTLE GIANT followed by everyone else...but of course this is outrageously subjective. I'd like to give a shout out to the Italian group Deus Ex Machina who helped to keep the progressive rock flame burning throughout the 1990s with a series of superb albums...and most of the lyrics were sung in Latin!
Well interesting list - but Gentle giant not in the top 20? That could be discussed😉
Gentle Giant is in my personal Top 5.
Where is Kansas!
The list is incomplete with out Kansas.
Kansas is a Top Ten band for me but this wasn’t about my favorites…
I left off Jethro Tull too!!!
