    Excellent! These results kind of show what I've been suspecting. Of all the retail models available, it seems the Noctua is the only unit that was actually designed for full coverage.
    It would be interesting to see the same tests done with a 3960 or 3970 chip, which should work well enough with all of these coolers given the lack of outer chiplets. Feel free to do a follow-up on that. :)

      @@user-yl9vs9eh1w It's more that the heat pipe orientation they chose resulted in a design that would be effective at cooling all TR4 chips if it could cool any, since the heatpipes run along the length of the package rather than the width.

    • @NewLondonMarshall
      @NewLondonMarshall 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 3990x is easier to cool than the 3970x, which is easier than the 3960x. This is because the clock speeds (and therefore voltage) is lower, resulting in lower heat output. Also more dies mean the heat is more evenly spread, lowering the chance of hotspots.

    21:27 If you put on the thick set of rubber feet on the 2nd Noctua fan, the whiny noise largely disappears. You can find these in the box of the Noctua tower cooler. There's even a diagram in the manual that shows this. It looks like you forgot to replace the factory rubber feet on the 2nd fan with them. A useful tip if you like a bit more silence. 🙂

    Thanks for sharing this video, impressive how Noctua NH-U14S TR4 can handle new threadrippers. Only other cooler that i would have loved to see in your comparison was the Thermalright Silver Arrow TR4, specially vs the U14S, maybe in a future video?

    • @tommihommi1
      @tommihommi1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In Computerbase.de testing with the 2990wx back in 2018, the silver arrow TR4 performed miserably in comparison to the U14s, I doubt it would be any different now.

      @@tommihommi1 Thanks for that heads up with the Silver Arrow TR4 testing.
      As we said in the video, the behaviour of the 3990X versus the previous-gen Threadripper parts is very different due to the dissimilar chiplet layout. Good.bad 2990WX coolers may not be good/bad on the 3990X, especially as the 64-core can push more power to saturate some coolers.

    • @tommihommi1

      @@tommihommi1 Indeed. I misinterpretted your comment. I too would be very surprised if something that isn't good for the 2990WX is good for the 3990X even with the different chiplet layout.

    It's amazing that some of these coolers are actually capable of handling over 400watts with these huge chiplet based CPUs. More manufacturers should design Threadripper based air coolers.
    I'm really curious how modern coolers could handle the new 96 core 7995WX when the plate is actually designed for that big IHS and spreadout core configuration.

    • @KitGuruTech
      @KitGuruTech  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the feedback! Threadripper is certainly a niche platform but it is a platform that we feel is very important to the market. Plus it's exciting and deserves coverage from many perspectives, in our opinion.
      I certainly hope we will be looking at the retail version when it releases. It's due Summer 2020, which will be ideal timing for us Brits without air conditioning in our home offices. Even if the fans are high speed and loud, that cooling potential of the IceGiant is absolutely required with the high ambients.

    well cool to see power use of the zen 2 CPU shown, iv only seen actually hardcore overclocking show power use during benches.
    you relay need to watch power use as it seems to be the best indicator on zen 2 of whats going on, comparing cooling with power use relay highlights it!
    look at the power use of the hotter cores, if power is higher there in the centre and boosting harder as they have cooling if there lower power use there on the outside and thermal throttling.

    Loved watching this test. However I feel something important has been left out. If a consumer is going to drop such a large amount of money on a 3990X Threadripper CPU and motherboard then I don't recommend the PC case you used for testing. A PC case along the lines of the Corsair 1000D would be a more logical choice. Mount a huge amount of fans in the front and top of the Corsair 1000D chassis (and two fans in the back) and I think your temps would be lower and more manageable regardless of the CPU air cooler you use.

      The Fractal Meshify S2 is an excellent chassis that has won a lot of praise from reviewers and users. Case choice is always very, very subjective. But the Fractal Meshify S2 is certainly capable of handling big, hot Threadripper builds as it has good airflow design.

Theoretically as long as the HS is large enough things like "temperature gradients" would minimise the issues you mentioned. You should have included at least one of these "true TR4 AIO's" in your tests - the results may have surprised you. Emperical observation always trumps scientific theory ....

    If you put the GPU where it's supposed to be, like 99.9% of actual users would, then your tests might mean something. Instead you have reported on an unrealistic situation, presumably because otherwise the ice giant is choked off, and falls completely flat.

    I've been told that the final version of the Icegiant uses 4 Arctic P-series fans. The pictures on their website (with the PWM splitter cables) seems to confirm this.
    So I'm willing to bet that the noice levels will be better.

    I think you've missed the obvious. Pause the video at 16:53 and look at the way the heatpipes run on the Noctua cooler and again at 19:27 for the Bequiet cooler: on the former the heatpipes run lengthways; on the latter they run crossways. Thus the Noctua gets coverage of the edge chiplets and the Bequiet does not. Indeed at 19:27 you can clearly see that the Bequiet at best only partially covers the edge chiplets.

    • @lukehill5739
      @lukehill5739 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is also a very good point that we noticed and considered could be to thank for Noctua's very high performance. With that said, the Cooler Master unit has a pair of heatpipes that run in the 'preferred' direction and it still suffers with limited performance. Previous testing (prior to the 3990X) has highlighted that heatpipe orientation is unlikely to be a signficant factor is either orientation provides good coverage across the hot spots.
      Also worth noting is that the Noctua heatpipes start to curve away from the baseplate before they reach the edge, so it's not complete coverage to the edges by the heatpipes.

    • @Strongdocoteur
      @Strongdocoteur 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wouldn't call it obvious, tests done on AM4 by multiple people showed that it doesn't matter if heatpipes perfectly cover chiplets. Then again, it's quite hard to do the same test on Threadripper due to the IHS being much more oblong.

      The coolers we tested were fine with four G.SKILL TridentZ modules. The Arctic Freezer TR 50 caused interference and would not fit. I am personally in favour of not using needlessly tallk RAM modules. G.SKILL TridentZ and Corsair Vengeance LPX are great options in my opinion, and they aren't too tall.

    From what I'm seeing, the performance of the Ice Giant is not better than the Noctua when the fans run at normal speeds. :( If you run the fans on the Ice Giant at full speed then it's a bit better, yes, but then it sounds like a friggin jet engine 22:19 and I wouldn't want to sit next to that when I work. So is it fair to say that that the Ice Giant is not that good compared to the Noctua? Or at least the prototype? Are there any benchmarks with the finished version and not the prototype?

    • @durtyred86
      @durtyred86 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What I like about Ice giant, AND what they've stated on several occasions, is that they put value on performance over acoustics... Ice giant isn't here to sooth your ears... that's noctuas job.. They're here to sooth your cpu temps as much as possible.

    • @bgtubber
      @bgtubber 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@durtyred86 If that's the case, just strap a couple of server fans on the Noctua and you're probably going to have the same cooling performance at the same acoustics as Ice Giant.

    • @durtyred86
      @durtyred86 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bgtubber possibly. I might actually try that.. I have the ice giant and a NH-U12A. I know the latter isn't completely neck to neck with the D15 but it's close enough "I think". Later on I'll put some industrial fans on it and see if they outperform the 12x25's. I don't expect they will as the 25's are pretty much the the best of both airflow and static pressure.

      @bgtubber 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@durtyred86 This would be an interesting experiment! I would love it if someone would test the NH-U14S as well as this is the one I'm currently using on my Threadripper 3970x. It has larger surface area and supports 140mm fans whereas U12A is a bit smaller and supports 120mm if I'm not mistaken.
