    Thanks Steve, I'm old enough to remember the moratorium in the 80's and 90's. I think it lasted fifteen years, but the population rebounded.

    • @KambotroutFishing

      We may be going back to that moratorium. The recent changes are helpful, but I’m not sure it’ll be enough to cause a rebound for the striper.

      I’m very pleased that it at least seems like Maryland DNR and its new leadership is taking a new direction for the management of stripe bass.
      For a long time, it seemed like It really didn’t matter what the science or the public and the anglers said. I tentatively feel like we are starting to be heard and that priorities are realigning as they should be.

    Any restrictions applied to commercial fisherman catching the egg carriers on their way to the spawning grounds? Or is it just us sport fisherman?

    • @KambotroutFishing

      Commerical has only taken a 7% cut, and that came from the ASMFC, not MD DNR.
      The sheltering of commercial interests is one thing that will likely lead to us still needing a moratorium.

    Thank you for the video! This is such a highly debated topic...without sounding too uneducated, why would a moratorium on Striped bass be a bad thing? I would think that a moratorium on Striped bass (commercial and recreational) while at the same time creating a bounty on Blue catfish and Snakehead would help even the balance, while giving the charterboat captains extra insensitive to target the invasive species.

    • @KambotroutFishing

      The only drawbacks to a full moratorium are the economic and recreational impact to those who rely on them for a living and those who enjoy the species as a sportfish or use them for sustenance.
      The transition from striped bass to blue catfish and snakehead will be difficult for some, especially those who invested a lot of money into striper fishing. Some of that gear will translate fairly well to blue cats but very little of it will transfer well into the Snakehead game. The same goes for their skill sets.
      But for the fish stock itself, a moratorium is without a doubt the best method/policy for restoration.
      Bounties are an idea too, but they’ll have to be funded somehow, so a revenue stream from somewhere (taxes, federal source, etc.) would need to be identified.

    • @andrewworkman2496

      @KambotroutFishing those are the same roadblocks I was coming up with in my head as well. The argument could be made that if the fishery is depleted, those same people who rely on it will be forced to make the changes regardless. I guess that's why it make sense to gradually increase insensitive to target other species while simultaneously disincentivizing the targeting of Stripers. As for the bounty, you are 100% correct that this would take a substantial financial commitment. Has there ever been any legislative talk around the topic of the bounty? Just curious if anyone has proposed solutions on the funding before.

    • @KambotroutFishing

      @@andrewworkman2496from what I’ve heard, a bounty once existed prior to my snakehead fishing time, but I think it all comes back to funding.
      With the number of blue cats and snakehead now, I can only imagine the paydays we could get 😜

      @KambotroutFishing new TH-cam channel, "Kambo bounty hunter" 😎
      On a serious note, what about making it easier for recreational fisherman to offload their catches to restaurants, shelters, food banks etc? I know a few different restaurant owners who have said they would love to put snakehead on the menu but struggle to keep a steady supply because there aren't enough commercial fishermen that target them. If us recreational fishermen could have the option to sell our catch, that would put the "bounty" into the hands of the private sector.

    Is commercial fishing for them also banned during this time?

    • @KambotroutFishing

      Great question. Unfortunately, it is the recreational and charter fisherman who are taking the brunt of all of these regulatory reductions in access to striped bass.
      Commercial Fisherman have only taken a 7% overall reduction as part of the Atlantic states Marine fisheries commission changes. As to whether or not this affects Commercial Fisherman access to striped bass during the trophy season, I need to do some more research.

    If jersey has to follow severe regulations so should the entire east coast . We’re only allowed 1 fish at 28-31 . And closed seasons to back waters Jan 1 till March 1 . All the other states Fvck it up for us .

    • @KambotroutFishing

      Agreed. I was extremely happy that the ASMFC finally handed down those slot limit regs to apply to everyone. Long overdue.
      In MD we also deal with issues in the Susquehanna which are upstream of us. That fight has been going on for a long time with no end or progress in sight, and it’s doing a lot of damage to the spawning grounds there.
      MD having a trophy season at all for so long is idiotic IMO. Glad they’re finally making changes there.

    Shut down the rivers in February and March! The C&R mortality pressure this current emergency measure addresses is a fraction of that in the rivers during February and March! CLOSE THE RIVERS FOR C&R!

    • @KambotroutFishing

      I’m not opposed to it, but I have yet to see any data supporting C&R mortality. Once temperatures are 61 degrees or lower, C&R mortality drops to near zero based on the data I’ve seen.

    • @rightinsideleftistmiasma2975

      @@KambotroutFishing given enough people fishing, then even near-zero % can be an epically large amount. 1% of 100000 is 1000 for instance. Plus, regardless of evidence for C&R mortality, they still use it as justification for stricter regulations elsewhere. So why not apply it to the rivers (one in particular) that are most sensitive and unusually hyper-concentrated with spawning size bass.
