Nice work- 28 years ago I was trained to tap on to the bricks not the tool level when building corners. people want to take the short cut tapping on to the tool level. It can put dents on your tool level and it can wreck your tool. There are rubber stoppers you can get for the end of the handle trowel so the tool level will not get damaged. It may not be a bad idea but then rubber stoppers can create stains on your tool level which can probably be hard to remove. The best way to keep the tool level in good condition is when you tap on the bricks when building corners. It dose slow the process down a bit but I can assure you the results are good; I hope this is good advice for those starting out and remember, no short cuts.
nice job on the brickwork Stu, looks ver neat. I would have built in a bamp tray under the first coarse of bricks though, and up on top of the first coarse of blocks, as the concrete floor meets the facework. Still a top class job though and i enjoyed your video editing with the music choice.

Looked at other vids but your personality and technique have me hooked. Learning lots of valuable stuff. Hello, how would you level your bricks out if you were starting from the front face of a concrete slab? in other words, you can only work back from that position. Also, what if the slab base that you are going to lay the bricks on slopes down,- away from the front of the slab, so you have to raise the bed of mortar for every brick to get the bricks level. Note, it is only a short run of 4 and a half bricks each side so that I can sit a precast concrete step on top of the brickwork. regards, from OZ.
Interesting that you ignore the course levels in the house after the DPC and stick with the standard 4 courses = 300mm on the dwarf wall. On my house 4 courses is mnore like 400mm so I would do the same as you after the DPC level. Thanks for this as I was wondering what to do.

Nice job Stu but I wonder why u don't use the mixer with its stand and tip into barrow and use you're mortar out of it rather than transferring 2 mortar board . Save the bending a bit lol. Bricklayer myself .
my neighbour buit a dwarf wall conseratory projecting out 3.7mtr right on the boundry line between our properties and then put clear glass on the side looking straight into my garden! his sill and gutter clearly encroach onto my boundary😡. cutting a long story short hes adamant he can do this and im not happy ! im watching your videos because i plan on building a block wall 2mtr high along the side just missing his sill by a few mm. could go down the legal route but im not a wealthy person . The gap between our bottom Windows is only 3 bricks and now i only have one brick my side, surely he should have set it back as you have done in the video.
how high can you go building a wall like that. what ive read is that 6 feet should be the maximum height, but my project requires my wall to be 8 feet tall. i also plan to use durawall to reinforce it.

hi stu, when your doing an extension/conservatory do you not have to worry about jointing up the brickwork down the side by the fence or do you just joint up as you go as its over hand cheers. Luke

Ok cool that makes sence i have always i have always hand mixed 2.5 to 1 for repair work and 2 to 1 to run through a grought bag. Uk mortar must have more portland in it. Thanks for explaining that take care
+Jack Honeycutt yeah that's right. I think US mortars have more lime in. I know alot of masons in pensilvania add portland cement to their type s mortar to help is stand up to the frost. uk cement is strong enough on its own though.

I don`t know what it is but I just love watching this type of video. You guys make it look so easy. I put a 3 course base down for a front porch, about 60 smooth engineering bricks, and it took me best part of a day. Looks good though. Smooth bricks clean up easy after pointing but, how do you get mortar of rough faced bricks?? All the best ; )

You get much better insulation (both heat, and sound) by having a cavity wall (2 walls). Even without insulation this is twice as heat-insulating than a solid wall. In Britain(?) we've used cavity walls since 1919. Now, the damp proof course, the plastic brick-wide strip you see laid along the bricks when they're 2-high, is to stop rising damp wicking up the bricks and inside. Not many warmer countries do this but it would be better if they did. If they did both - they wouldn't get plaster flaking away on the inside at the bottom of walls.
Nineteen Seventy7 the point of cavity walls is nothing to do with insulation it is to stop water travelling to the inside of the building. Filling the cavity with insulation defeats the purpose as now water can pass from the wet skin to the dry skin. Here in Scotland we don't use block and brick any more, we use timber frame inside and brick/block or whatever outside. Insulation goes in the stud walls leaving the cavity clear to do it's job
how much do y'all get a brick over there? Nice clean work but the pace seems a little slow but at the same time i like that because you can be more of an artist. what are the minimum number of brick you need to lay a day to make a living. here in the states you gotta lay atlas a 1000 a day. might be looking to go somewhere where quality takes authority over quantity. thanks for the video love it!

You quote a price for the job and that's the price if it takes you 5 hours or 5 days. The goal is to price for 5 days but do it in 5 hours 👍

Does the noise generated during the work pose a problem in terms of laws, is it necessary to obtain permission from the local government units before carrying out such work?

Did you cut the cavity where tge new brickwork meets existing ?
Tidy job but any reason why no cavitys cut out at the existing wall to prevent any moisture penetrating through.

its to stop moisture rising up from the ground buddy, its called dpc damp proof course. :)

i dont quite understand your question carlos, its just clamped in to the brick joint then when finished fill the joint back in with motar

Do you guys all in the UK mix 4 to 1 that is week is the US standards we use typ s or n and mix 3 to 1 here
in the uk standard is 4 to 1 mate i dont make the rules lol
