Hi i have been a carpenter for over 40yrs and served a proper apprenticeship and its so nice to see nice work, people who know what there doing, keep it up there's not many of us left.
Lots of home veneer brick laid here in the DFW area of Texas. Had a left handed layer as a partner back in the mid '70's thru the mid '80's. On the long stretches of the walls he would start on one end of the run & i on the other. Learned as a cub to spread mortar with both hands & it came in handy, as i could begin at the far end where my partner was, and spread left handed, back to my end of the run & take off meeting him somewhere in the middle of the run. Miss the therapy & the youth of my days back then. Full head joints by the way, are a must for a strong wall... good to see them being used. There was a sayin' back then''' ''We Bricklayers are alway's gettin' a little ahead, or a little behind, on both our mortgage and our bond.'' Out of respect of you're committment to our Savior... i edited out our young & foolish saying. Blessin' on you're site Chris Longhurst & Cheers' from all of the Kentmere Gilpins that it took to get me to America. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kentmere 71518
I'm getting a whole new education in building. Thank you I had always wondered about how you lay good foundations. Now I know ; if asked I will point them to your site.
lovely job mate, great to see every stage of the build, just goes to show how much work goes into an extention from start to finish, keep the videos going mate really enjoying them.
Cool Video , I am in processes of getting my extension done and it was good to have some expert knowledge it helped when talking to my cowboy builder , No I am not going hire him I have now got a new builder , Thank's this video I can talk to him in his own language.
How to spot a Cowboy builder? Watch a. video like this and when they are measuring up and quoting, throw a couple of questions in that only a builder or viewer of a video like this would know and if they don't come back, then they're a bad un! I built my own concrete and brick conservatory base and then fitted the 10 x 12ft conservatory myself and did the leadwork myself to a good standard too and know what to ask and expect. Roofers are by far the worst for conning though! Believe me!
Great stuff. Maybe a very dim question, but here goes... are building plans that are specified in mm measured into brickwork measurements also, or are brick runs tweaked as best fit on site by the brickies?
Just curious,on the window and door jams, should the half bat brick, not be cut square at the back,to allow dpc to sit flush on the back of the brick,??
Any chance you could tell me what bricks these are? I'm desperately trying to find a match for mine, asked builders merchants and noone can find one, the facing bricks your laying look perfect match. Do you know what their called?
Hi. I liked ur videos quite interesting & helpful especially for those who want to learn more about extensions.& to reduce costs. You know all the prices. I am planning for an extension at the side of my flat. It’s four in a block cottage flat but through land registry I know this part of land belongs to me only .neighbour downstairs have own access to their main door. My question would I get permission for a 2 storey extension. How much it cost for permission? The extension I m thinking about 32 square metres. I asked couple of Builders quote me roughly £2000 to 2500 m2 double storey extension.roughly about £60,000 job. My budget is £40,000 . How can I reduce cost ? Which material to use or who to use to reduce labour cost & materials? Any suggestions will be appropriated ? I m in Glasgow,Scotland. Thanks
I notice you have toothed in on the outer leaf and yet used a flexible wall tie on the inner leaf? Isn't there the chance of the outer leaf cracking? Would Building regs be OK with that?
These videos are really great, Chris, but I can't help but think you need to start providing a bit of your business information in the description text or at least do a little intro/outro for your videos.
Keying the bricks into the corner of the existing house, is that just for aesthetics or is it better than using the stainless steel joining bars? I notice you used them for the inner block skin but not for the outer brick.
I'm suprised you got away with toothing the brickwork into the existing building. We aint done that since the 80's. They make us use wall starters like you used for the block skin. Also, why do you use a damp tray at DPC level? We only use damp trays where the cavity is bridged, like when using catnic lintols. Other than that, the brickwork is tidy.
Chris Longhurst that’s fair enough but he is cack handed , turning the Brick after he’s perped it. He should watch you, pick it up, two swipes, in the wall. He’s putting the joint on the wrong end of brick in relation to the way he’s laying. I’m not commenting on speed, merely his technique. Thanks
Profiles not always fast as it depends on each individual job, we had corners and felt it was as quick free hand...some times profiles are a nuisance and can lift the bottom courses..

Great job, something about laying bricks that looks so therapeutic and the reward of seeing the progression as you go along.

Hi, thanks for the comments and nice to learn about your back ground too-:) And most of all our bond in Christ-:)
I'm getting a whole new education in building. Thank you I had always wondered about how you lay good foundations. Now I know ; if asked I will point them to your site.
very good video, you seem like a gentleman Chris.
A left handed bricklayer 👍👍👍👍👍
So excellent performance every mason has given us!!! They are all outstanding artisans in bricking
Great series of videos Chris.
lovely job mate, great to see every stage of the build, just goes to show how much work goes into an extention from start to finish, keep the videos going mate really enjoying them.
love seeing the brickies at work: "can't get better than bang on"

Thank you, and all the best for the build-:)

Job's a good un, the care and attention shows through. Great vid thanks.
Great jobs always
Thanks for your video
Great job
Another excellent piece of work as usual.
Cheers
Nice that you put something in to wall cavity :-)
Amazing how different construction techniques are, depending on where you are in the world. Btw you sound exactly like Roger Daltry.
🤜🤛
Brilliant video guys, could you guys tell me what the internal measurements would be from internal wall to the internal wall of a 3m extension?
Nice job as always.
Should the half bat at the window jam,be clean and square at the back of the brick,? Just a query,🇮🇪🇮🇪
What size cut brick can you use when filling an area that won't take a full brick?
*I don't understand why you put the long piece of wood across the extension ? Someone explain please **6:29** 😐*
Can't wait to get mine started in few months
Would the foam insulation panels placed beneath the concrete slab cause movement over time? The slab can compress this softer layer.
Great stuff. Maybe a very dim question, but here goes... are building plans that are specified in mm measured into brickwork measurements also, or are brick runs tweaked as best fit on site by the brickies?
Carl utilizes the level ruler, horizontal lines and vertical lines to measure and assure the qualities of the works.
Do you put dpc over the steel lentels to form a damp tray,?
Just curious,on the window and door jams, should the half bat brick, not be cut square at the back,to allow dpc to sit flush on the back of the brick,??
Need a video of string line and corners, from foundation level. Ill be overseeing a bungalow. Thanks

How come the first few courses of brick you have done in stretcher bond but as you build you change the bond?
Where's the tray damp over the lintels , you mention at 5:28 about building it in....then you build the corner and completely miss the tray ?
Chris did you do a Video on building the Roof? Could not find it, Love your Part 1 to 3.
Yes it's now on-:)
How long have you been doing this Chris? thanks for all of the videos
Long time bro-since 1978 -:)

I learnt brick laying in 2003 had a lad called robert longhurst
Looking good boys
Awesome job lads :) :) are you looking for any bricklayers to training tham up or know anyone willing got my confidence up you all know how it is
Hitting the level with edge of the trowel is a real bad habit. Sh itt hot level as well
Hi Chris can I ask a how long did it take you to brick up from the DPC wall to scaffolding height?
i see you've added insulation into the wall cavity - how far does this go down - is the cavity left hollow only beneath the damp proof course?
what is the membrane for?
Why dont you use pprofiles and dummy frames for your openings so much easier and better allround job
True, but some times they can bow- Plus we didn't have any made for us so we just got on with it ( as you do in certain circumstances lol)!!!!
I notice you have toothed in on the outer leaf and yet used a flexible wall tie on the inner leaf? Isn't there the chance of the outer leaf cracking? Would Building regs be OK with that?
Why are the bricks rough on the inside?
Hi what course in damp usually on
These videos are really great, Chris, but I can't help but think you need to start providing a bit of your business information in the description text or at least do a little intro/outro for your videos.
Thanks for the tip
Keying the bricks into the corner of the existing house, is that just for aesthetics or is it better than using the stainless steel joining bars? I notice you used them for the inner block skin but not for the outer brick.
Yes, thought it would look better than a straight joint!
Thanks for the movie and it is good.It let me know more about how to do a bricklaying
Great glad it helped-:)
Expansion Joint is what i`m missing.
No ties between each wall?
Sorry I just saw them
I'm curious as to why you left the panel fence in, instead of building right to the boundary line?
I don't know why you didn't get an answer, but if the neighbour doesn't want it you may end up with problems.
The overhang from the roof can't go beyond the boundary, so the wall has to be set back to allow space.
Always got told to do blockwork first? Why don’t you do that?
Did you put coring holes in ?
No
Timber frame would have been a million times better. Never have understood why the English haven't caught on to timber frame like us in Scotland!
Chris what thickness of fibreglass wool are you using?
Hi, 100mm
I'm suprised you got away with toothing the brickwork into the existing building.

Good vid Chris, but please give your man some help. His perping of bricks at 2.30 is painful to watch
justy crusty at 2:41 on the vid explained we were doing it slow not fast 🤔
Chris Longhurst that’s fair enough but he is cack handed , turning the Brick after he’s perped it. He should watch you, pick it up, two swipes, in the wall. He’s putting the joint on the wrong end of brick in relation to the way he’s laying. I’m not commenting on speed, merely his technique. Thanks
Your the most modist guy out there..not like some wannabe movie stars heh stu..:)
Hi Chris do u have a son called robert longhurst
No, Luke-:)
PLUMB WALLPLATE!!!!!!!!.REALLY!!!!!!!!
Not one bricklayer on site
You need concrete lintels over those openings! Those crappy bits of thin metal are not suitable!
He’s never a bricklayer !!! And have they never heard of profiles
Juan Kerr doing it without profiles is called skill mate.
Cut the Crap
You’ve obviously never laid bricks on a price then.
Cut the Crap profiles all the way time is money
it's also slow its not about skill ya nutter it's about earning ya dosh and on to the next one pal !!
Profiles not always fast as it depends on each individual job, we had corners and felt it was as quick free hand...some times profiles are a nuisance and can lift the bottom courses..
