    Thanks for producing and sharing this video! I am headed there next week with my son and a couple others. He just got the permits on Monday so I am trying to fit in an accelerated training regime before the trek.

      My pleasure. This was a beautiful hike. Take it slow as you acclimate to the altitude and you’ll do great.

      So far, Kearsarge Pass has taken me to the most Alpine Lakes for the least effort. It is becoming a favorite of mine too. That whole valley is very lush with views.

    The last time I hiked any part of the John Muir trail and this area in general was 1979. The first trip over the entire John Muir were the summers of 1964 and 1965 and we camped at Bullfrog Lake. When I was in this area in 1975 it had been closed for a couple of years, the last I heard in the late 1980’s it was open to camping again and had been for quite a while. Do you know if this closure is recent and or permanent? Nice video it brings back dozens of memories from what seems like a past lifetime.

    • @KV_Aventuras
      @KV_Aventuras  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The recent closure is temporary in the grand scheme of things.

      Lucky Strike Hikes The last time that happened the Forest Service said the same thing, I hope for you current enthusiasts that you were getting the straight scoop. I’m curious if you know what their reasoning is, back in the mid 1970’s I was told it was because of overuse/abuse by pack animals. I just ran across (and subscribed) your channel recently, do you have any vids that are specifically on the Thousand Island Lakes area and Guitar Lake area headed up towards Forrester Pass. Equipment has sure changed in the last 50 years! Back then the one and only good pack was a Kelty that you had to purchase from Kelty in Glendale Ca, and Eddie Bauer if you wanted a good sleeping bag. Yours 5ents look real nice compared to the plastic tube tent! Thanks again for a great Channel.

      @@supersami7748Wow! You named my exact pieces of equipment circa 1975 as a Boy Scout. I had an aluminum frame Kelty pack I purchased from FedCo. in Pasadena. My sleeping bag was a goose down Eddie Bauer Kara Korum -20 degree which, I still own and it works perfectly for sub-zero temps nearly 50 years later (that sleeping cost me six months of paper route money - $150 back in 1975!) My mess kit/canteen/stove were all Vietnam War era from Army Surplus in Glendale and I hiked in blue jeans, cotton flannel shirt and wore super heavy, leather, Vibram soled "waffle stomper" boots with super thick Wigwam socks. I haven't been to Thousand Island Lakes yet. It is high on my list. I do have a video of Forrester Pass th-cam.com/video/KvF7FbyXvEY/w-d-xo.html. I had one of Guitar Lake from my 3rd Mt. Whitney climb in 2015 but, the video is lost. I've summited Whitney twice. I do have a video of my first summit: th-cam.com/video/8tyPt8zsCQY/w-d-xo.html As for Sierra trail closures, I can't speak to them in the 1970s. I have seen the effects of pack animals on trail - completely chews up the ground into a super fine sand. Pack animals abound in the Sierras once gain. As for recent trail closures, most of them at present are due to the wildfires and trying to keep first responders and hikers safe. Not sure how long they'll be in effect as many fires are still burning out of control. I'm re-planning my Fall/Winter hikes to SW Utah and Mojave/Joshua Tree as a result.

      Lucky Strike Hikes We’re fairly close in age my first hike was the Golden Arrowhead in the San Bernardino’s in 1962 followed the next year with the Silver Moccasin. The John Muir back then were 2 halves of 17-18 days each that we did in 1964 and 1965, dad was on all the hikes. My dad took hundreds of slides on those hikes, I’ve been trying to put them on DVD’s, that’s not very hard but remembering exact names and places 45-55 years later is rough. Do you have a suggestion on some reference material that might help me identify places on the trail? I’ve checked several books but none of them have what I’m looking for.

      @@supersami7748 There are some great map Apps (for smartphones) specifically for the JMT: "Guthooks" would list most of the points of interest and key landmarks along the route. For John Muir Trail paper maps/guide books National Geographic has a nice one. I also like the Tom Harrison topo maps

      This trip was from 6/11 to 6/14 2020. It was actually a light snow tear that year. In 2019 same dates there was 3’ more snow in the same passes. (Kearsarge and Glen)
      The coffee thingy is for pour over coffee. It only weighs an ounce (empty). Sorry I forget the name of it. I’ve also use a similar one called Primula Brew Buddy

    Nice! Do you think someone in good shape could dayhike to glen pass and back from onion valley?

    • @KV_Aventuras
      @KV_Aventuras  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Start early. There may snow now. Traction is recommended (mircospikes/ice axe). Going down Glen (heading North) you might even need crampons as that face is more technical. But as a dayhike from Onion Valley you would not necessarily need to go down Glen - North.
