Best Sierra Hikes // Kearsarge Pass Trail

- Hope everyone is well and staying safe out there during the Covid-19 pandemic. Big thanks to everyone who offered their video topic suggestions and ideas during this past week. This video highlights the Kearsarge Pass trail in the Sierra Nevada mountains in which I have hiked numerous times and find myself thoroughly enjoying each time I visit. The trail map and footage originates from my most recent hike along the trail where I entered into Kings Canyon National Park, hiked to Charlotte Lake and back over the pass to Flower Lake where I called it a night. This is a narration and a "behind the scenes" so to speak of a previous Kearsarge Pass backpacking video I posted, which you can find here:

I love this so much. I would love to do it, but at my age and health, I don't think I can. Your view of the Kearsarge Pinnacles almost made me cry, because in 1977, I sat atop them with a friend via Cedar Grove, and University Peak was to our right. At the time, I didn't even know where we were, but it was so beautiful. Everything was covered in snow. 20 years later, I took a hike to Gilbert Lake with my wife and a buddy, and at that time, I didn't even know that those pinnacles were not too far away, and I didn't know that I was looking at University Peak beyond the lake. Thank you for such an awesome movie!

I was there in 17. From Piute Pass to Onion Valley. There are no words that can accurately describe its beauty. You can only just " be" when you are there. I must go back soon!!

Hey sheety, I have a friend who's hike about 85% of every peak in the sierra Nevadas. This guy is a freak of nature. He said that the Sonora pass was the most beautiful hiking hes ever done in the sierras. He came over to my house to tell me how awesome his trip was when he got back!
turd ferguson awesome! I need to spend some time up there this summer. I visited for a few hours last year but didn’t have the right gear for snow hiking.

I've watched probably more than a dozen of your videos, most of which seem to start in Bishop, CA. So, I kind of assumed you lived near there. Oops! Driving from LA for a weekender?! Wow! Props to you for commitment! I loved the views on this hike. STUN-NING! Had a good laugh about the burro. Wild, I suppose. I really liked the mapping animation at the beginning, and the narration overdub was super helpful. This was just a bliss break during the day. I went from "shelter in place" to "backpack in place." Loved it. No suggestions other than keep 'em coming, Hoss!
Gary Greenfield wow thank you - glad you enjoyed it! Yep, besides my love for hiking / backpacking I also really enjoy driving. It’s a pleasure to wake up at 3:30a, brew some coffee, hit the road by 4:00a and roll into Bishop by 8:00am. The scenery along the way is excellent and its truly amazing what you can get up to all in one weekend.

Good info! Did JMT sobo in 2015, headed back this September to do HST to Whitney then JMT nobo. Plan to resupply in Indy via onion valley. Any idea about how long to get to Rae lakes. Assuming slow go with Glenn and KP but hope to take half day in independence before headed back to trsil....asst we will be doing lil night hiking even if is only around 13 miles thats a lot of elevation change.

If you had wanted to camp a second night at Charlotte Lake, would you need a permit also from Kings Canyon NP as well as the Kearsarge Pass permit from Inyo NF? Great video. iPhone did an excellent job. Going to now watch your original 2018 trip vid. 😍
I don’t believe so - I think the Kearsarge pass permit along would suffice for another night since it’s the same trip. Thank you! I’m actually heading back to this trail Saturday!! 🏕️

@@Sheety33 Ah the Maroon Bells is a classic. I climbed Pyramid and South Maroon Peak out there. The San Juans is stunning, especially during change of season. Also, the Sangre de Cristo is not very popular, but absolutely stunning as well!
Cheers mate. Enjoyed this, nicely done. A video that included a little bit of biographical info coupled with showing what you do to prepare, etc . . . for one of your adventures would be much enjoyed by those of us curious about such things. Too, your photography skills are so refined, so good, that a longer film -- maybe broken into three parts or something similar -- would be akin to a theatric experience . . . just need some popcorn. Finally, if you are able to get out this year are you considering a trek as far north as the Sonora Pass? Regardless, always look forward to your YT vids. Cheers!
kw19193 thank you very much! Over the summer I made a 3 part backpacking series you may be interested in where my wife and I hiked from Mammoth to Yosemite (a 2nd time). Beautiful hike. And yes I’ve visited Sonora pass and need to go back and thoroughly hike the area. I drove up last year but didn’t have the right gear. I’ll be posting a video about that trip in the coming weeks. Great vid. My wife and I were just talking about branching out from our traditional hikes in Little Lakes Valley that we have been doing since the 90s and your vid has us wanting to do this one. Covid go away so we can be on our way! Oh... how were the mosquitos up that way?
Brian Smith Little lakes is one of the best hikes around! I think you will enjoy Kearsarge, especially if hiked in August after the mosquitos are gone. They weren’t bad when I went in August, although that all depends on how much snowpack we get this year.

Covid 19 has been a blessing for us who've been wanting overtime at the Amazon fulfillment center in the riverside county area! Lets hope the economy opens up here soon so the National parks car reopen!
Do you think it's doable in one day the whole trail and by that I mean different lakes that you showed us in your video
100%. I started around 11am and was relaxing at my campsite by 6pm. Plenty of time in a summers day to really get deep 🤠
