    As a fan and subscriber in good standing I am certain that the contract I signed entitles me to have the facts of your injury and how you are able to cope with the weight on your back. Are you free from discomfort? The x-rays show a dramatic procedure was accomplished and yet you are crossing raging rivers. I am fairly convinced that you are not of this world. Where did you come from? How long did it take you get here? Do they stuff olives on your planet?

    • @KV_Aventuras
      @KV_Aventuras ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha ha! Yes, they do stuff olives on my planet. Yes, I blacked out, took a bad fall in my bathroom, and shattered some vertebrae (t3-t5). I was on Flomax and it can make you dizzy if you get up too quickly. So, I stopped taking it. I had an excellent surgeon who patched me back up (fused t2-t8). I did 6 months of rehab/PT and am nearly back to normal. Yay! Fortunately, I had already changed my backpack gear to lightweight stuff. My pack with food and water weighed 27.4 pounds at the trailhead on this hike. My bucket list was getting simpler each year before breaking my back. I no longer have the desire to thru-hike the PCT nor climb any of the 7 Summits. There’s still of ton of trails I can do in the Sierras. Thanks for watching :-) KV P.S. I also believe I had some “higher power” that had my back so to speak. I’m not sure who or what. When I blacked out I woke up completely calm and in no pain whatsoever. It was nearly three weeks before I discovered how badly I’d broken my back. I’m also not entirely sure where I was/went when I blacked out. As to where I am from, my memory chip has blocked my access. I’ll probably get all the answers when I finish up my Earth experiment/experience. 😎

    Thinking about doing this route with a buddy, there is probably gonna be snow on the pass. Do you think it’s doable?

    • @KV_Aventuras
      @KV_Aventuras ปีที่แล้ว

      This route is steeper than Mt Whitney. I’d check to see what hikers are saying about Mt Whitney snow conditions and assess. Baxter is not well traveled and they only issue about 5-10 permits per day. You’ll want to consider crampons and an ice axe and also bring some type of emergency communicator like a Garmin In Reach. I’ve taken a snow skills course and learned how to hike with crampons and also self arrest with an ice axe. You’d also want to know how to use this type of gear before trying Baxter pass for the first time in high snow. My buddy that hiked this in this video is a member of San Dimas Search and Rescue. This Season has found him doing more recoveries than rescues. I doubt he’d advise to do Baxter in high snow. But to each according to their capabilities. Enjoy and be safe out there. KV ;-)

    • @ericbolander8742
      @ericbolander8742 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KV_Aventuras thank you for such a detailed response! that’s some great advice and honestly I think it changes my view on making an attempt at this pass. I have I’d say an intermediate level of experience when it comes to backpacking, but have zero experience in snow. I guess the snow is melting pretty rapidly around 10,000 but I feel like 12,000 on a steep pass might be a different beast. Sadly it’s the only way to Rae Lakes. I don’t wanna do anything risky, but will analyze conditions and talk to rangers this week…. If you have any other recommendations or advice it’d be much appreciated! Thank you. Ebo

    • @KV_Aventuras
      @KV_Aventuras ปีที่แล้ว

      You can take Kearsarge and Glen pass to Rae Lakes. I’ve done both numerous times and they’re much easier than Baxter. You’d still need to bring snow gear for Glen Pass. But both passes are used by PCT and JMT hikers and are well traveled. So you’d have a foot path already to go.

    low snow year, not too bad. if you look on that cabin on the way out there you can see tags written by people out there in may with no snow. some of them date back to the 1950's. I love imagining those old timers doing it. there is a book by Edward white called "the pass". It details his wife Elizabeth and his exploration of deadmans, cloud canyon, and searching for a pass out to the valley they find one and it was/is named after Elizabeth. the old pass is no longer used but the new one still has her name. the new route is brutal the route they took is bonkers! there is a write up about it in 101 peaks in a blog from 9-15-15 titled; is Elizabeth pass marked wrong on maps? it's on the internet. in caltopo historical maps you can see the old route. that they did it and with pack animals is amazing.

    Man that looked like a fun time. I don't know about you but I did this hike I believe three seasons ago and just couldn't get over, after watching this, how much I missed. There's a hell of a lot to see when you're not huffing and puffing up those hills. To be sure its not a hike for the faint of heart...I vividly recall coming down from Dusy basin to the JMT and thinking "damn I'm glad I'm not walking the other way" and yet I have no recollection of that giant bridge, or evolution creek crossing. I've gotta do it again until I get it right I suppose. I got caught up behind thunderstorms that seemed to jack up my schedule....I was alone (only 2nd time) and felt like I was behind the whole time, yet still finished a day early. What a fabulous trip this one is. I feel like you were doing it right though. I'd like to know some pack weights with all that alcohol. What were your cocktails? that looked awesome. When I saw them in the little pouches I ,for a fleeting second, thought they figured out how to dehydrate alcohol...what the hell, cold fusion ....why not? Peace

    • @KV_Aventuras
      @KV_Aventuras ปีที่แล้ว

      I think my full pack was about 32 pounds at the trail head. My base weight hovers around 16 lbs with full comfort (sit pad, chair, sleep warmth, 2 pillows, etc). I allot ~2+ ounces of alcohol per day and carry it in two 8 ounce Nalgene bottles. One for whiskey and one for vodka. The pouches you saw are olives. I put chilled vodka into them for martinis. For the whiskey, I premix simple syrup and bitters into the Nalgene and at Camp I’ll add dried, candied oranges and tart cherries for “Old fashioned’s”Cheers! As I’m aging (58 as of 2022), I’m slowing down to enjoy things more. We averaged 11-12 miles per day at ~ 2 mph. We usually left camp by 8 am and made camp by 5 pm with a few breaks along the way. I’ll average 3-6 Sierra trips a year like this. Some of my more recent trips have been even lower miles and more comforts (more Whole Foods like fresh avocado, gourmet cheeses, dried salami, red wine) Happy Trails :-)

      Indeed. I was it out there that night. Saw three day hikers. Next day saw a fellow backpacker heading up. I’d say go early in the Sierras cuz water (lack of) and fires will most likely be issues again this year. Early Season is nice. No crowds nor bugs.

    And of course, sometimes "failing" to achieve a thing generates the success (no quotes) of returning home safely, to try again. Last year, I was doing Horseshoe Meadows to Langley and then Whitney, via Crabtree. But as I've gotten older, I need more time to acclimate. Slept fine at Horseshoe at 10K. Hiked to Cottonwood Lake #4 next day at 11,200. A bit tired. Slept fine. Felt horrible in the morning (that sleeping too high thing). Next day we planned to summit Langley. Thought of turning around in the morning but had some coffee and felt much better. Got up Army OK to 12K feet. Langley is steep, like Baxter Pass, 1,000 feet per mile. We dropped packs and headed up with just water and jackets. My headache returned and, at 13K feet, the nausea. Struggled on step by step to about 100 vertical feet below the summit, which is just over 14K and turned around. It just didn't seem wise. Made it down to Army Lakes and camped but had no appetite and couldn't acclimate, still at 10,600, so turned around next day and headed out. I "failed," technically, but I'm ok with that. Will try Whitney again at the end of my JMT trip this summer. Nothing is guaranteed.

      Small bit of trivia, Langley and Whitney are “Twins” and also Numbers 1 and 2 in that order for the easiest of the California 14ers. I believe Shasta is the hardest of the bunch. I also bailed on my only attempt at Langley. I’ve done Whitney three times. As I’m aging (57) my goals lean more towards Sauntering and cocktails on trail. I usually take a couple ounces/day along with different mixes and garnishes. They’re lightweight. Cheers

    Nice one. Did this the other way around previously, but over Lamarck Col instead of Piute. Laughed at you tripping onto, then sauntering across, the bridge on the way down from Dusy to LeConte Canyon. Stopped at that waterfall and stuck my head in. Such a great route. I like your vids. They have a nice easy vibe and good music. That looks like a serious slog from the south side of Muir Pass. So, cocktail, strategy? A small flask of boos and then those Toes olives?

    Nice report. Getting into that Gardiner Basin sounds hard from everything I've read. I wonder, is it my screen, or is the video quite overexposed? I could not read any of the white captions -- well, a few, hear and there, but most not. The rocks were just so white. Tried all the adjustments for my display in preferences, but can't fix it.

    Do you still remember how much the temperature at night when you camped overnight? And could you share your sleeping bag temperature rating? Plan to have a overnight hiking in cottonwood. Weather forecast says the temperature goes to 28F at night and I have a 15 degree quilt, debating if it would keep me warm at night if I put on all my layers.

    • @KV_Aventuras
      @KV_Aventuras 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have three quilts, all from Enlightened Equipment: 0, 20 and 40F. I have three air mattresses all from Thermarest: UberLite, XLite and XTherm. I also have multiple sleeping layers: Patagonia light weight, mid weight and Smartwool Mid and heavy weights all tops/bottoms. I sleep 10 degrees colder than the manufacturer ratings. For a trip with a low of 28F, I would bring my XTherm pad, 20 degree quilt and Patagonia mid weight top/bottom. I keep my puffy in reserve if I ever get too cold. Sleeping comfort is very individual and varies greatly from person to person. It also varies greatly depending on campsite selection. I tend look for pine duft and tree cover above water and below summit lines. I avoid sleeping in open air and on any exposed ridges or next too/near the water line. Water conducts heat and air can also add moisture inside your tent.

    Curious why you and your hiking buddy didn't overnight at Baxter Lake? Summiting AND going all the way down to Dollar Lake area with the trail being sooooo hard to find (we used gps trail pathing, there is an app that tells you were the trail is).... seems a bit of a hike! lol. Btw, also - why did you both have burners (cooking), seems extra weight carried that wasn't needed. Just curious.

    • @KV_Aventuras
      @KV_Aventuras 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was too hot to Summit in one day for us. We stopped at 9800’ and finished the Summit the next morning. Arrowhead Lake was night two on this trip and the Kearsarge Lake was night three. We both leave our homes about 3 or 4 am to get to the trailheads on these Sierra hikes. When we left Baxter trailhead at 10:45 am on day one it was already in the 90s at 6,000 feet. And there were fires sending smoke our way. Baxter Lake is an excellent choice to camp. I plan to return to it. That entire Baxter area would make a great 3-4 day trip just on its own. So remote and beautiful. Both John and I make our own maps using CalTopo and then we download the Gpx files to the Gaia App on our iPhones to use while hiking. We also both carry Garmin InReach GPS. That said, the Baxter “trail” is not maintained. Many places between the Baxter trailhead and Dollar Lake are completely overgrown. We had a few spots bushwhacking where our feet didn’t even touch the ground. We had to surf over manzanita and bush. John uses the Kojin alcohol stove. I prefer my Soto Amicus. Pack weight isn’t an OCD focus for me any longer. (Yeah right! Lol). That said, I still decant my ISO canisters based upon my estimated number of boils, planned altitude and expected weather temps. On hikes over 4 days ISO beats alcohol for lighter weight. This trip John beat me. (we’re talking a couple ounces here…) At this stage in my lightweight “battle”, I focus most of my energy managing my food weight. Food is always where most people carry too much in my experience. For 3-8 day trips I’m generally between 25-30 pounds all in (gear, all food plus initial water carry) which is completely no problem for me. My go suit adds 4 pounds to that (hiking clothes, shoes, poles). I’m done with big miles at 57. I now bring a 17 oz. camp chair and 2 oz. of good booze per day. Cheers 👍

    So for this hike we would need the overnight permits for bishop pass and piute pass. So you need permit for JMT/PCT for the path along Evolution Basin?

    • @KV_Aventuras
      @KV_Aventuras 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I got my permit off recreation.gov. You do it by trailhead. Mine was Bishop Pass - South Lake entry and Piute Pass exit. It covered all of the JMT portion in between. You can also go the other direction which seemed to be more popular.

    • @jamesbadham9665
      @jamesbadham9665 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Btw, there is no such thing as a JMT pass. As KV said above it's by trailhead entry and exit. As long as it's not Whitney or a handful of other highly restricted permits, you're good to BE on the JMT.

    Great video. Very inspiring. Was there a particular reason you went anti clockwise? Do you think it would be easier going the other direction? I have done Rae Lakes loop a few times from Kearsarge Pass and this looks like something quite different!

    • @KV_Aventuras

      No reason. Neither of us were sure which way to go. I doubt it would make much difference had we gone the other way. We did see five hikers total, all going the other way. There could have been people going our direction too. But, we never caught, nor saw any catch us.

      @KV_Aventuras 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. 60 Lakes Basin is well worth the side trip from Rae Lakes. I’m not so sure about continuing onto Gardiner Basin. After we summited 60 Lakes Col the difficulty going down and around Gardiner Basin and up and over Gardiner pass back to Charlotte Lake was all a bit overwhelming. Summiting 60 Lakes Col and heading back to Rae Lakes and Arrowhead/Dollar Lake might be more enjoyable.
