I wondering if this case guard is install right..it looks like the plate is mounted below the lower fairing chin in this video..but on the GL1800 riders forum a picture is showing the plate tucked inside the lower chin fairing...that would explain why there is such a long mounting slot at the back end of the plate...so you can slide the plate back and forth as you postion the plate into the lower chin fairing...looks much better that way and would also keep the road grime out from under the case guard better.

Nothing keeps you from permanently installing the T-bolt with a separate nut and then installing the plate over it with another nut except maybe my post below. It appears the "recess" or bend in the rear portion of the plate is deep enough so the additional nut will not lower the plate significantly. On the install pictures I have seen the T-bolt appears quite long, so maybe this was somebodies thought anyway.
I have Max's ECG system and installed it on my DCT. I have since removed it (Never ridden it, just installed), re-torqued all the OEM bolts (which were torqued all over the road). I had also reshaped the cutout for the rear Oil drain plug.
The bracket fit was fine, but the remove/re-install process with seven (too short 10mm screws) is cumbersome. The plate is heavy when you are lying under your bike on your back and are trying to hold up the plate with one hand and trying to insert one or two fiddley tiny screws with the other. Big pita, IMO.
    YMMV

That T-bolt at the back of the Wingstuff plate might be a challenge to situate while on my back or side, looking up through my bifocals 🤓. Wingstuff should be refunding everyone’s money who ended up with the first and second editions. Mine was crap and did not have the Nut and washer for the T bolt. Had to try to find replacement at local hardware store. Seems to me they should have taken the faulty one off market if they were designing a new one, instead of selling substandard plates. I literally purchased the last edition a month ago.

This video made 9mos ago must have update/different instructions. Here in Oct 2022. Those 2 front bracket bolts between exhaust pipes are now the 2 bolts forward just inside the lower side engine covers. A goat screw, but not impossible and certainly not 15-20 min by any means. Not a complicated process but requires the finger dexterity of a martial artist. 😂 Got to be able to better engineer brackets that require no bending. Brackets that fit the Wing as it should. Otherwise a good value.

Received this kit yesterday. The “T” nut has two nuts and the acorn nuts are no longer shipped in the hardware pack. Face lock nuts have replaced them. I was never a fan of a belly pan. But, seeing engine case damage on the Goldwing forum, I ordered this pan from Wingstuff. It is absolutely a very sturdy pan. If road debris destroys this pan, you have bigger problems. I was hesitant to order this over the heavier Traxxion pan. But, seeing it firsthand, I can assure you, it’s more than adequate to prevent damage to your engine case. It is very heavy (like 1/8”+) thickness. I was actually surprised at the quality and strength of this pan. I would not hesitate to say, spending more money on the traxxion is a waste of your dollars.

  • @dray439
    @dray439 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I have an ’18 Tour, manual. I installed the latest version of Wing stuff’s belly pan on 1/25/22. It was a fairly easy install, taking me less than 45 minutes. I watched Cruiseman’s video before starting. He covers the process pretty well.

A couple of points have changed since he posted it. The front brackets are pre-bent. However, I still had to make minor adjustments on both sides. The kit now includes two washers and nuts for the rear t-bolt. This allows you to secure the T-bolt, with one washer and nut. You then slide the plate onto the bolt, and secure it with the second washer and nut.
I have a few minor concerns:
The printed instructions say that you can slide the belly pan above the front plastic cover, and push the plate up about an inch. I could not do that on my manual. To me, there was not enough gap to slide the plate inside. The brackets also hold the plate lower than the plastic cover.
I’m concerned about the nuts coming lose while going down the road. You need to remove the plate for oil and filter changes, so you may not want to use Loctite. A nylon-insert lock nut might help on all three nuts. Lock washers may help also.
Be aware that the nut, on the left side bracket, is pretty close to the shift linkage on the manual bike. (May not be a problem with the DCT.) You may need to adjust the bracket, to make sure there’s enough clearance.
    Just my 2cents worth.

  • @donmartin9567

The braces on the front should come pre bent - fail. SAE hardware on a Metric Bike (if that's the problem you were having) - they should be identified in the instructions under "tools required" - another fail! A "T bolt" that, if it comes loose, will come right out of the hole - another fail!
Hmmm, wonder if the skid plate should fit "under" the front cowl?
I do like the idea of NOT having to remove bolts that are holding the engine together as is required with the other Skid Plate when its time for an oil change. And, I like the full coverage. Even if there is a heaving impact pushing the skid plate into the engine the force will distributed much better than not having the plate in place.
I do like the idea of the flush mounted bolts on the Traxxion Dynamics skid plate bottom as they seem easier to undo than trying to get a 14mm (or whatever) wrench on an acorn nut "up underneath".
GREAT review - thanks & keep them coming. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Mmmm.... for 180 beans, I believe in my opinion , it's a fail ! way to much fiddling and not solid enough when it comes to the front brackets. The rear T bolt is another pain....maybe if they incorporate a nut inside a hard rubber grommet which you slide in the oval hole and use a flat bolt with an allen key center ...same for the front brackets which would be pre-bent and of better stronger metal...welded nuts and flat head bolts with allen key center it might be worthy of 180 beans and of easier installation and removal for oil change.....again until then...it's a fail in my opinion !

Good concept and the fact you do not remove critical bolts of the engine block is a plus for me. This is pretty simple install. What bugs me big time is the fact that I will need to guess the banding and angels and more. Why ??? It should come as a Lego kit, plug and play. This will deter bikers from ordering. Traxxion's is way more solid, but I have an issue with the engine block bolts removal and the fit of the plate is way too tight. The plate on Max's must float and then tightened.

Fitted my Wingstuff belly pan today. The brackets are a right royal PITA!....especially if like me, you have the Goldstrike Highway pegs fitted. It's doable but very fiddly have to line up the highway peg bracket with the POS belly pan bracket and the bolt hole in the casing. Lots of sweating and swearing involved. I ended up tapering the highway peg mounting bolts that the bellypan brackets also hang from so they would find their way easier into the casing eventually. IMO, a better and easier way would be a 2 piece bracket for each side, either end bolted into their respective holes and then joined with another nut and bolt in the middle?? ....Just a thought.

Let us know how long before the skidmark (plate) begins to rattle. The "adjustment" holes being oversized for the Tbolt means it is likely to loosen a bit and since the only thing holding the "T" in place is torque, steel through aluminum, if it moves around or loosens even a little, it falls out and that might be a problem.

Putting all 850 pounds + the rider and gear onto any engine guard will most likely result in damage. These are designed to protect against objects getting kicked up from the front tire and striking the underside.

I like the skid plate but not a big fan of the front brackets. I homemade a makeshift plate to go to Alaska last year and used a similiar mounting bracket in the front. Had to bend them also to get around the exhaust. It Looked clunky but necessary. I wasn't happy with it but it was all I had as no one had made a skid plate for this bike. (US/Canadian border didn't open in time so trip was postponed) I just purchased the Traxxion Dynamics skid plate two weeks ago. I would have preferred Max had put some vent/drain holes in his plate. I will likely drill my own holes in it before mounting it. CG good video on mounting this skid plate. I was kind of kicking myself for buying the TD plate but after seeing those front brackets I will stick with Max's TD skid plate.

I just installed this pan a few hours ago and it appears the updated product front brackets needs to be installed to the most front engine guard bolts vice using the second frame bolts per this video...I had no problem with the left bracket and it installed without any bending however, the right bracket needed to be bent in two different places/section to complete the installation...
In addition, the rear T-Bolt now comes with two nuts, the first nut one allows you to preinstall the T-Bolt on the bike's slotted fame hole and when complete, the rear can be installed without manipulating the T-Bold or worry about it coming loose. It also comes with a lock washer however the front nuts are standard nuts and I wish they included lock washers...I may stop by home depot and add my own lock washers later on.
I would still give this product a 4 on pricing but a 3 on the front bracket installation and over all a 4.5 on the overall product quality and strength...I know the Traxxion belly pan is the Cadillac version, but the pricing and cost of shipping just brakes my overall budget...I guess a pan is a pan and "better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it"...lol

One concern I have with the Wingstuff solution is this: the front portion mounts to the engine and the rear portion mounts to the frame.
Now, the engine is possibly rubber mounted or otherwise isolated from that same frame. The engine therefore would be free to move somewhat by design, Every time you apply throttle or torque, for instance, the engine will move in the frame in the opposite direction of the shaft drive turn direction. The case guard rear frame mount cannot move while the front mount will move with the engine. This means the case guard will continuously flex back and forth as the engine is running and torque is applied or removed from the drive train. Also the solid mounting of the plate to the frame will allow noise and vibration to transmit freely from the engine to the frame or the rest of the bike. IMHO the rear mount needs to be redesigned with an insulated rubber mount ( rubber well nut) to avoid these issues.
It seems to me that both available solutions (Max or Wingstuff) have a lot of development work left to be done. But as usual the testers will be the first customers as the manufacturers are usually almighty and will find a thousand reason why everything they do is absolutely perfect🤣

I have to say the front brackets are a big fail for me. They look like a great way to rub your exhaust system and either rub a hole in the pipe or wear the bracket to failure really fast. A belly pan taking a nose dive at highway speed can be disastrous. Leaving the forming of the brackets to the customer is kind of cheesy. No thanks!

I don’t like the brackets. If they’re going to mass market the product it really should fit without the customer deciding where and how much to bend the brackets. Using your exhaust pipe to create a bend is not what I consider a professionally engineered product. Also, get rid of the company name cut all the way through the bottom plate. Those holes will become an entry point for dirt, pea gravel, etc.

Those front brackets should be pre-bent to fit perfectly and that rear T-bolt should be replaced with something that is permanent and can't turn and drop out. I would not purchase this setup after seeing your video - but then I wouldn't buy Max's either. A properly designed skid plate should allow access to remove drain plugs and filters without having to remove the plate itself. That being said, I believe that a skid plate is a necessary accessory as I damaged a coolant tank underneath my last Wing . . . then I installed one . . . too late of course.

I am not impressed with it. First, why should I have to bend brackets to make it fit. That's not right. The brackets should already be bent in the shape to fit the installation. Second, I'm not a mechanic, but I don't think anything should be laying up against the exhaust headers even metal that won't be affected by heat. That is just a bad design. I wouldn't be surprised if down the road you could also get a rattling or vibrating sound from there. Third, shouldn't the front of it go under the plastic lower cowling? I could see that it would be a good place for dirt and debris to get in there on top of it from what is thrown off the front wheel. I went on Wingstuff website and, of course it isn't available yet, but there are no instructions. I was hoping to see if they tell us we have to bend those brackets to make them fit. Good video.
