A Lion Encounter! & a Gorgeous Waterhole Day for All the Elephants

- This male lion knows when to leave the party! He slowly walks away from the waterhole, through the bushes, as the elephants all make their way to the dam. The animals prefer to avoid conflict where they can.
Setombe and Klaserie are first at the water, followed by Pisa, Fishan and Timisa and Khanyisa. Watch the herd enjoying their waterhole together, with mud and sand accompanying this spa day! When it’s time to leave, Fishan and Sebakwe don’t want to exit the water and keep splashing as the rest of the elephants head off to forage!
I just want to say that I have been fighting breast cancer for 3 long years and these stories you share make me smile. I check everyday for a video from The Herd, thank you! Maybe one day I will get the chance to meet these gentle giants. It's on my wish list. God bless Adine and the staff for caring.

Wishing you happiness and health. Just wanted to let you know that my mother-in-law was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer 6 years ago and they only expected her to live for about 6 months at that time. Yesterday she celebrated her 6-year mark and she is now considered a "survivor". Just wanted to let you know that people can and do beat cancer. Hoping the same for you.

Oh wow what a breathtaking sight of the magnificent King of the savanna he’s one handsome lion. The herd gradually coming into view down the path wasting no time heading for a refreshing swim is quite the sight in its own right two equally majestic creatures in their wilderness home. Simply a perfect time watching the herd soak up sun/water and bonding time with each other thank you as always for taking time to share these moments and amazing sights with all of us who aren’t lucky enough to say they have lion elephants etc as their neighbors every day in our backyard what a privilege to be able to live in such a beautiful place;one day I’ll make it there to witness such magic for myself fingers crossed.❤️❤️🐘🐘☀️☀️

LOL! I remember how our little Braveheart screamed, trumpeted, and ran off the trail so fast that the others chased after her to protect her. Bless her little heart.
Do you remember the time she was off by herself and suddenly got scared??? Omg it was amazing to see the response of the herd!! Sometimes I think she does just to get attention and herd love….so cute!!!

Seeing Khanyisa lay down after swimming reminds me of all little kids being tired after a long day in the pool. She is absolutely so precious!!!

The carers never travel alone, plus most lions don't attack for the heck of it.

@@kp8381 the Ellie’s protect them in the bush. A carer would have a hard time getting attacked with the matriarch and bulls of the herd nearby. Jabulani and the other bulls arent a force to be messed with.

One lion alone wouldn't dare to disturb strong looking elephants. The most even a whole group of strong lions could hope to do, is to run around them hoping to excite and confuse them, and make them run, possibly leaving a sick one or a baby behind. But that rarely happens either. Elephants are very composed, especially when they get older.

I’ve seen the herds before, and how they’ve been trained, it’s simply amazing!! I think I’m more impressed these days by the lifestyle the trainers live!! Selfless dedication that is not matched in the world anywhere!!! It’s very dangerous to continue that walk with the male lion in the distance!! No , their character is superior to the other trades people that decide to pursue their careers ,, my hat is off to them!!!

It's surprising that the herd didn't seem bothered by that male lion in their vicinity. They weren't even raising their trunks.

Plantings to buffet retaining wall once backfield? Very good idea developing water resources. Any way to channel run-off into waterhole or other reservoir is great project as well.

Everyone into the pool! You can almost see their joy and relief at entering the water. Love watching them splashing about and enjoying the refreshing water.

I have been hoping for this kind of video!! The lion was beautiful but he looked really skinny. Do you think he's just old and don't have the ability to catch anything anymore? Maybe he lost his pride to a younger lion? He's beautiful and I'm glad there wasn't a big uproar (no pun intended) between the Ellie's and lion. The elephants would've won that match. I am glad you have different places and waterholes to take the Ellie's to. You are all such a special group of people !!! You care for everyone and everything in your lives and more!!! I was a nervous wreck for a minute - thinking of the carers, but love to see the magnificent lion. How easily n beautifullly life was handled by everyone. If humans could learn to take it a little easier, like the Herd, don't jump to conclusions that everything is a threat, which I did, of course! LOL

Everyone's got their sunscreen on, now they're ready for a day in the bush. I hope the rains come soon, we're desperate here in Joburg too. I look up at the sky every day and hope the clouds will gather, but so far, nothing.
What are the ideas of rehabilitating/expanding waterhole? Good and important project.
Due to the damage to the retaining wall around the dam caused by the elephants rubbing against the edges, we will be rebuilding the wall to prevent the total destruction of the boundary around the dam. We will also be digging deeper into the dam to allow more rain water to collect in it to ensure a more sustainable long lasting dam for our elephants and all the animals in the reserve

I love these post as well. I live in America and most folks are stuck on watching "Hollywood " well not myself. I don't care anything about human actors. I would MUCH rather watch a 12 minute post on HERD than any "Hollywood" movie. So thank you HERD for giving me the greatest show on earth!

It amaze me how you guys remember the names of all the elephants.
They are family 😍
Why? They live with them.
The longer you watch them, observe them, study them, distinct mannerisms, physical traits, quirks, personalities, etc start to come out. It's not unlike any other family member really. I wondered the very same thing years ago when I first found HERD, and now after several years - even from a distance, I can identify each one easily, and most of the time, it's by something really small and unique as opposed to glaring... it really is like any other family believe it or not, over time you just immediately know who is who... I amaze myself I can tell even now, but then I remember how long I have watched and loved and spent time w them and it's makes perfect sense

I thought the same and wondered if the elephants smelled the lion. If so, they didn't show any reaction that I could note, no trunks in the air or no surrounding the littles to protect them. Maybe since the carers were calm and didn't show any nerves, the elephants didn't either?
Fishan has been doing well. He still walks with a limp and is a bit slow but we always have a carer watching and staying with him. With all of this said, he still loves his swimming and mud bathing 🤣

It's like us, only using different substances: we bathe, using exfoliant & co, then cream and sunlotion… So nice to see them bathe and enjoy the water, watching it, it's like having a little holiday oneself…

I believe the carers all carry walkie talkies and communicate constantly with each other since the herd often spreads out to browse and so they all know who is where and what's happening. They can call for assistance if needed and I understand that the larger predators all avoid each other anyway, knowing that nobody wins if they come into conflict with each other. They are wiser than we realise sometimes! 🤗
I often think of the carers as shepherds watching their flock of elephants. Letting them be elephants but also guiding them and watching out for their safety and welfare. The Herd community are wonderful and dedicated and deserve much respect. They're also so very lucky to live in such proximity to these wonderful creatures. I'm old and in poor health and know I'll never have the opportunity to see them in reality so I appreciate the Herd videos more than they know. I'm sure there are others like me. Thank you Herd. 🤗💖🐘💞
Our carers and elephants will look out for each other. If a carer had to get harmed, the elephants will look after them and protect them as if they were their own.

They sure also enjoyed it too.🥰 However, I am happy to know that if things get to bad with the food supply because of the terrible heat and dryness that you would be giving the elephants supplements and other things to keep them well and healthy too.😊👍🐘 God bless you. Also, as I look at the land and see how dry it does look, before you said that you would be giving supplements and other things to the elephants to keep them well and strong too, I was very concerned how they would be able to survive but, I know you will be looking after them. It was such a delight too to get to see the Lion too. Such another beautiful and very strong animal too. There was no way the elephants could get to the Lion or vise versa?
