There's No Stopping a Running Baby Elephant. Unless You're Kumbura & Limpopo!

- Khanyisa is in a mood to run around the reserve and while the rest of the herd find themselves left behind, allomothers Limpopo and Kumbura keep up and follow after the calf as she trumpets and runs into bushes with excitement.
These "zoomies" often come when Khanyisa is feeling a little extra playful, when the weather is cooler and she's had a good night's sleep. Like humans, even elephants have days when they're a little more playful than usual. This is certainly not everyone's Monday mood!
The elephant is the only mammal that never, even when "running", lifts all four feet off the dusty African ground. There is doubt that adult elephants run as opposed to speed walk. Studies using extremely sturdy force plates seem to show that these animals’ front legs trot while their rear legs walk.
The elephant’s left hind foot moves, then the left front foot moves, waits a bit, then the right hind foot moves, the right front foot moves and then there’s a pause before they repeat. No, not a new dance move, it’s just the way elephants move. They don’t break into a canter, they don’t lope or gallop, they just walk slowly, quickly and sometimes intimidatingly fast.

Enjoy a view of Khanyisa's furry ear holes and the top of fuzzy head, as well as a view of beautiful Limpopo and how similar she is starting to look to her mother, Tokwe!
The herd find a delicious marula tree that has been knocked over - possibly by the wild elephants in the reserve - and nibble at the bark - with Fishan, Khanyisa and Timisa close by all getting in on the feast.

You all need the highest praise. This shows how healthy and happy she has become. All of the time and effort put into this little girl and her whole herd is showing . She gave me the impression that she was showing Adine that she can do it on her own. 🙏💕

How delightful. I could see her being naughty by swishing her tail and running around ... Such a special little girl that is loved by everyone. She is going to be a great leader one day, she just has that temperament.

She's so full of fun. She just knows if she was in trouble the herd would rush to her. If she wasn't an elephant, I would swear she was a monkey. Timisa really is the prettiest elephant

As much as we love to see how our Princess is growing and healing and living the life she deserves, I think it has inspired and rejuvenated the older Ele's as well and given them a sense of purpose and perspective too....... her energy is good for them, even when she is a little prankster and it's obvious she is just wanting all the attention (which she deserves in spades
Khanyisa has become more independent and explores by herself. I just got a glimpse of her little tusks! This baby is growing wonderfully thanks to the Herd team especially her caretakers 👏💕
Nothing else matters then when you see how the Ele's are growing and healing.... their actions speak for themselves

Khanyisa is in a 'catch me if you can' mood today 😂 Limpopo and Kumbura were probably thinking we'll catch her & then hand Khanyisa over to one of the other allomothers while we eat 😂
That little gal certainly was in high spirits this morn. Zipping around, beating up a few bushes. She makes me laugh. Limpopo is taking on more of her mom's looks. I never noticed 'til you pointed it out. And Khanyisa is putting her lessons into practice. I saw her using her wee tusks to try to strip some bark off that downed marula tree. Thanks for this & all you do.

I stand by my previous comments on our meisiekind: Sweet, funny, sassy, independent/strong willed and has her own Khanyisa’s time! So glad she’s so loved & protected by this amazing herd & the great carers bc it scares me when she has this bouts of sassiness & ‘runs’ in the opposite directions, while the bushes are still high. 💖🐘🌿

Reminds me of telling my kids when they were wee, “You’d better stay when I can see you!” And chasing my rambunctious grands down the street. Lol. Good for the aunties! Thank goodness they can see her wherever she goes.
You’re so right! Their height definitely helps with keeping an eye on this little one, because she quickly disappears from our view when the bush is lush like this. Kids will be kids 💛

I am always amazed at how well they communicate without language.
They do have a language, when they make what people call rumbles or trumpets that is a language and each rumble or trumpet says something different we just cannot understand it completely. Scientists are just now discovering what each rumble means through studying them .Elephants can also communicate in low frequency ultrasound, pitches below the range of human hearing .They are communicating all the time, in ways we cannot hear and or understand.
In watching her recovery this last year, you have physically healed her as well as protected and built her wonderful little spirit. She is the happy baby she deserves to be. Well done!

Khanyisa is easy to find, just look for a shaky shaky bush or tall grass. Was Pisa around or off on adventure with Zindoga and Mambo? Wherever a girl is it seems like one can always find our Fish! ❤ Timi is such a sweetheart.
Pisa was off with the boys! Yes. Bit of a tomboy at heart, she is, when not being a bossy boots. 💕 Timi was so funny sneaking under the tree, and probably got a great back scratch in at the same time
Andine, Limpopo loves you so much she just must greet you. It’s true, now that you pointed it out that she really does resemble her mom. Her tusks are going to be glorious! Limpopo and Kumburu did a great job of keeping up with little Sunshine.
She enjoys her greens rather eating them or attacking them. Loved the title. Funny but too true. Limpopo? greeted Adine as if to say, “this girl” in the tone of mothers everywhere. ‘I know she hears us’’
