Orphaned elephant Khanyisa opens the orphanage gate all on her own!

- The Orphanage gate was mastered with ease as little impatient Khanyisa opens it in a hurry to join the Jabulani Herd!
She was welcomed with trunks of love as usual, but it wasn't long until the herd started behaving differently and started to surround her. It turns out that they picked up the scent of a pride of lions a couple of kilometres away and were protecting Khanyisa instinctively.
Elephant Manager, Owen Dube, explained that they had received a report of the lions earlier, and the elephant care team changed the plan and direction of their day planned route to go foraging.
Once they settled, they started heading out. There were some beautiful scenes as the sun was continuing to rise and greet the day behind them!
Since I have been watching your videos for some time now, I want to compliment some features that I particularly like: The silence and serenity of your videos and the fact that there is no added music, the close-ups that enable me to see their skin, eyes, etc in great detail and the constant mention of the elephants' names which I still can't distinguish from one another. Whenever I can spot a 'tree-to-go' is a bonus that makes me smile (and comment 😉).

Khanyisa is smart and will be smarter every day! :) I love how she goes to Lundi still and how well she bonded with Bubi. :) She's still a baby and has big, gentle mums. :))

Without the adults there would be no HERD. The orphans can't integrate and learn behaviors without the adults. I'm always amazed at how carefully these gentle giants walk with (and surround) the young. You ALL do an amazing job, always working and accompanying the herd. Their environment is well kept. I love Khanyisa! She is so adorable and smart! Gates are no problem! Beautiful seeing the herd walking together and surrounding Khanyisa with love and protection! I love the way you know all their names and they listen to you! The thought of lions nearby is scary, but the Keeper is unconcerned and I know elephants, especially in numbers, can protect themselves. Thank you, HERD for reassuring me of their safety!
Amazing to watch them as they smelled the lions. Ain't nobody gonna touch that baby on their watch! Their pure devotion is only surpassed by God's devotion.

Oh, I really hope people realize how much trust the HERD has in Adine and the caretakers. Wild elephants would stomp a normal person to death, with a baby in their presence to protect.

hahahaha!! We are surrounded by big-five and predators. They very rarely post any threat to elephant herds, they hold them in great respect due to their sheer size and feel them coming from quite far!

Elephants are cool that's good the calf is reunited with the herd but I saw a person open the gate that was definitely a person's hand

I luv all your elephants! You always show the happy go lucky times. I'm curious if you ever recorded the tense times? Say an elephant is having a bad day and doesn't want to give Kalis back, do they get defensive ever? Twords people?
We prefer to relate the "real" side of the elephants too - as this is important. Much like the incident we shared when Bubi challenged Adine when she felt she was getting too close to Khanyisa, and when Bubi injured Timisa. It also makes people understand they have their moods too :-) If moments were recorded - we may not always show them, it depends on what it is. We have not had to make that decision yet to be honest - both situations were not recorded. But it would depend if we felt it would be upsetting or offensive to our followers. :-)
@@herdelephantorphanage I understand. It could be hard to watch, and TH-cam likes to keep it child friendly at least the USA version of child friendly. I think we often shelter ourselves from realities that are difficult to deal with. If you ever decide to extend your channel and open a patreon (in TH-cam people can join your patrion acct. for certain money's each month) account and offer bonus footage. Can help with money and get wish list stuff.

Surely elephants are one of the cutest gentle giants out there! Love them to bits! The evil done to them and still being done is mind boggling! The slaughter which took place in the last 100 years or so - from 4 million down to 400 thousands on the continent! I can't picture that blood bath without weeping....Thank you for your care and commitment. We all own you our gratitude!
