Zindoga Steals Baby Elephant Khanyisa’s Zebra Blanket and Runs Off

- This video isn't just about Zindoga stealing Khnayisa's zebra blanket, but it certainly is a highlight to watch the brazen bull elephant throw Khanyisa's warm coat around with his trunk and then try and run off with it, before cheekily discarding it. Tigere, our dedicated Elephant Manager, kindly retrieves the stolen item and cleans it off.
The day starts at the orphanage as Carers Khensani and Reply are already at work, cleaning up after Khanyisa and preparing her for the day ahead. Khanyisa does not want to leave her bed just yet - it is still very chilly in the mornings here in our reserve in the Greater Kruger region of South Africa. But eventually the little calf is tempted by lush green grass Adine has handpicked for her.
Khensani leads the way as the team bundle on down the road to meet up the herd and on this morning Khanyisa's gentle giant welcoming party included mother Lundi as well as allomother Bubi and young sister-friend Timisa.
Enjoy a walk with the herd as they all head to the waterhole for a pit stop and water refill before starting the day's journey!
That made me laugh seeing Zindoga get Khanyisa's blanket and walk off with it as if to say:
"You don't need this blanket....I toss it, Ah ha!"

I lived in Central Africa in the Peace Corps and was able to visit wild elephants…but we hid downwind and were quiet as mice as they were very wary. To be able to walk amongst a group with no fear anywhere for humans or elephants would be the greatest joy of my life.
Anyone who cares for these animals is a hero to me!
ZIndoga doesn’t want Khanyisa to be an elephant with zebra stripes. It does not want Khanyisa to be a Zebraphant!

Adine you closely observe the herd and notice every time a member of the herd looks back to check on Khanyisa, give her some love etc. Just so you know, we also notice every time you check on Khanyisa, give her a little love, or pet for reassurance. You (and all the carers) care for and watch out as much for this elephant family as they do for each other. ♥️

When I walk my 10lb chi-terrier mix doggie, I always watch her little rear end...shes got long legs and a curly tail.. so you know I'm gonna love watching these huge ( and little) elephant rear ends! They all look so sweet

Sweet how the elephants gather around Tigere as he works to put the blanket back on Khanyisa, it seems he's a member of their herd as far as they're concerned. They certainly know he's there to help them & his affection for them is obvious. But such hard work that all must be, every single day. Khensani, Tigere & Adine, you all amaze me w/ the depth of your devotion to these animals & conservation in general.
This was just wonderful to watch a morning unfold in Hoedspruit (Hats Sprouting) South Africa, from my morning in Northern Calfornia. I can smell the bush wild scents, the ellies musky smells, watch how people and ellies interact so peacefully. What a garden of Eden you have created, Adine and Staff! How lovely the world seems in its natural simplicity and zen of the moment. As my cup of coffee steam curls through the morning chill, so do the elephants breaths. The sound of human shoes crunching on dry grass, the sound of gentle heavy ellie feet landing with sureness on the earth, and no artificial music overlay, is sheer bliss. You have brought South Africa to us. Thank you for your incredible work with elephants. I applaud your efforts.

That was really something! He almost started to do a victory lap while twirling the blanket! LOL, but I guess they truly respect and love their caretakers. Smart animals ❣️
Zindoga was in a mood this morning. I loved it- he takes the blanket and runs. That was the funniest thing. Just like kids.
It actually might help to turn off the warming lamps in the nursery a bit ahead of when it time for her to go. If there is not a great difference in temperature between inside and outside, then she is less likely to have to pick between a warm place she would rather stay and the colder outdoors. Doing this may also help her body get used to better regulating her temperature as after she walks up in her warm nursey and then the nursery cools off when the heat is removed slowly and makes it easier for her body to slowly ramp up making her body temperature adjust as the temperature slowly falls in the nursery. Then when its time to tale her out she has adjusted to the temperature over the time the nursery was cooling down and going outside is not a sudden thing she has to get used to all of a sudden. This is actually something that we do with any young cattle that stays in over night and is used to a warm barn because they cannot tale the very cold nights, but come morning we turn off the heaters around the time they are starting to wake and eating in the early morning, and by the time the are ready to go out to graze for the day inside and outside is the same temperature and their bodies have adjusted to it. Doing this so they can gradually adjust to a change in temperature rather than step from one warm spot out into the cold has also alleviated issues with respiratory issues during cold weather as they systems are not shocked with a sudden change.
I miss Fenya and when i watch this i think about Fenya and Khanyisa standing beside one another. Thanks for sharing and everyone a bless and safe day.
When I saw the blanket flying from Zindoga's trunk I laughed so much! Sooo adorable and mischievous! Zindoga is very smart, when he saw Tigere come his way he knew he wasn't supposed to have the blanket!!! I love how Adine greets sweet little Khanyisa🤗❤😘
I can imagine Zindoga using the blanket to try to blend in with a herd of zebra 😂 And the zebra looking up at him with wonder on their faces 😂😂

Feeling so disparate in my thoughts and heavy hearted these days 💔😞with covid and Afghanistan, and all the other global changes and for a few minutes I forgot all about everything except Our beautiful Ellie herd! Cat, I have found a lot of comfort in a few verses in the Bible. Many don't read it. But it is very specific about the times we are living right now. 2 Timothy chapter 3 verses 1-5 tell us what the world conditions would be in our time, the last days. It starts by saying we would live in critical times hard to deal with. And lists all the bad traits that would be so prevalent. Many other verses in Matthew 24, Luke 21. Daniel 2:44. But Psalms 37:10,11, 29 and Revelation 21:3-5 give us comfort of the near future. Stay strong.

Hard to think of it being chilly there. When you think of Africa “hot” is what comes to mind 😊😊
Especially in the sunrise and sunset hours, it can be cooler, and at night, it can become so cold that might need some long pants and a fuzzy jacket on, when outside. Also, South Africa, Zimbabwe, etc in the Southern countries can get some good cooling breeze coming in from the surrounding ocean.

Winter days on the veldt (high altitude) can see a delta of just below 30°C to just above freezing between daylight and sunrise/sunset...in just a few hours.

Khanyisa did not want to leave the warmth of her nursery and when they get to the dam Zindoga snatches her blanket and swings it around like a prize he won. Their personalities shine when they get cheeky with one another. Lol 🙂❤🐘🐘🐘

I smiled, @ 0:20 we first see a trunk stretch out from the stable. At about 0:22 we see a bright big blue eye following. And @ 0:24 we see what seems to be the biggest smile peep out of her stable! What a precious cute sweetheart! It's simply amazing to see how she works her trunk to get just the right hold on it before she puts it in her mouth (@ 2:36). Then scratching her ear. She's so darn cute! Look at that sun in the background, Oh My Gosh! And you really get to see the size and compare with the camera view of Adine walking behind them. I'm still amazed at their size. Such gentle giants! Just like my favorite horses, any draft. And even with all of the 'All-Mothers', Khanyisa still seems to know who her adoptive Mother is. Oh how I chuckled! Zindoga is such a character! I'm still chuckling. Maybe he's not too fond of Zebra's! ha-ha

I love this video - it seems so family oriented with all the curiosity, protectiveness and Zindoga's tomfoolery. I can't help but think of Mopane and think of how he would have been with his brothers and sweet little Khanyisa. I hope he is watching somewhere being amused by Zindoga's antics.

Elephants have such sweet souls.maybe the other was using instincts and didn't want the baby to be attacked by a predator who saw the baby 🍼 as a zebra burger.

Again thanks to all of you career's I see how much devotion you put into their lives and how much of your own lives you give to the elephants. You all make it look so glamorous and fulfilling I'm sure it's a lot harder but I'm sure it's also the best experience of a lifetime.

One thing is for sure, if I come back into this world, I want to be an elephant and be in the care of you wonderful lady at the sanctuary. This was really a fun video. First Khanysia not wanting to come out in the cold. Everyone being very patient and letting her set the tone and time. Then Zindoga. What can I say about him? He was extremely cheeky, stealing Khanysia's blanket. He is like the big brother picking on the little sister. We will have to wait and see what happens when she is all grown up. If he continues to pick on her, she is likely to give him his comeuppance when she is bigger. After all elephants don't forget. She will be coming for you one day. LOL🐘🐘🐘🐘

How proud must Adine and the crew feel to walk so calmly with the Ellies on their daily walk! The Ellies hear the calls from the crew and obey immediately knowing that it is better to have some space in between! It looked like Tokwe and Little Miss K had a little communication moment which I thought very sweet! It made me feel proud to watch them all and Little Miss K with her ''Go Faster Stripes" Just adorable! It just struck me how huge Fishan is! Wow! And Zindoga has a sense of humour it seems, I am sure Khanysia was glad to have it back!
