Evicting hawkers is a Painful but NECESSARY...CBD had become too chaotic and Unsafe
While I agree that pavements in a city centre should be easy to walk and clear of any kind of clutter, I also advocate for giving hawkers designated areas on very large pavements or squares.
Not to sound too mzungu but I really like street vendors of all sorts. We have a lot over here in Europe but most are licensed and they have their fixed spot granted by the city council.
They also pay a fee.
Here in Kenya, hawkers run away from paying fees, that's why some hawk in the streets, secondly Kenyan streets are not that broad and can't accommodate pedestrians and hawkers at the same time, thirdly, it's not like the hawkers don't have a place they can occupy, we have a market for them already
streets look organized at least . would wish for complete replacement of those pavement a few flower pots, reduce noise pollution and it will turn into a decent city. hawkers are nothing but a menace am sorry Dolphine we all sympathize with hawkers but also the shop owners pay tax and need organized working environment to attract customers.
There's no way out for them, the impunity they entrenched during Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta's time is over. We can no longer continue the ideas of Jomo Kenyatta's time, we have to change for the better. Next are those rowdy matatu's creating chaos in the CBD
Good job Sakaja, 100% support this. Honestly it's not the governor's problem where the hawkers go, that's a different issue altogether, just like it's not a landowner's problem where squatters go once evicted. The landlords and tenants are the rightful occupants of these spaces for which they pay dearly.
It is the governor's job, he told these same hawkers a few months back that they can sell their produce in the CBD, his word should therefore be his bond. He can't just wake up and change his mind like that unfortunately especially if he wants the voters to take him seriously. I'm all for law and order but also strongly believe that people especially those in a position of authority should be honourable at the very least.
Nonsense,this are Kenyan Citizens,Constitutional Rights Holders,their jobs are recognised Constitutionally,every single positive income generation activity is protected by the constitution, they pay tax as well,relocate them as the natural law demands.

The sustainable solution is to remove the matatus from cbd, the matatu stages create human traffic which attracts hawkers, without getting rid of the matatus nothing will change, hawkers will be back in a few weeks

Most hawkers have stalls in Muthurwa, gikomba and other markets, they come to CBD for quick money. Secondly Uhuru Kenyatta build a market at Riverside on your way out of town towards kariokor market, called Mwariro market, it has never been occupied. Thirdly the government should also consider those who are paying taxes, and county govt fees whose businesses have been affected. The govt is to blame coz of allowing hawkers to slowly take over the streets. Let the law and order take its place and we won't find ourselves in this precarious situation. Try to make a visit to Mwariro market, a market that can hold 3,000 traders. But it was politicised by then MP jaguar and these hawkers refused to occupy it.
West Africa is worse with their open air markets. The government needs to build markets for traders and farmers markets for food vendors, it's that simple. The pavements and sidewalks need to be paved as well with barriers that prevent cars from parking illegally in all neighborhoods just not in CBD. KEEP NAIROBI CLEAN!

I think there are markets but the hawkers don't want, or cannot afford, to sell there. Some of them probably buy from the !market and sell on the streets. I was thinking that they could build an upstair walkway on some of the walkways and only allow hawkers on the top part. They can also have city kiosks , of a beautiful permanent design, and put them in open areas where they will not impede traffic but those will not be enough for all the hawkers.

The hawkers have to realised that sidewalks were made for the movement of pedestrians and not for selling goods. It will be better for the city if hawkers are not all over the sidewalks blocking movement, causing congestion and leaving their litters behind. The govt should have designated areas where the hawkers can sell their wares but they should also be responsible to keep those areas clean and organised.

Dolphine you need to get with afrikan traveller and wode Maya and working on plans to hold a afrikan diaspora business summit in Nairobi where afrikan investors abroad can meet and with local akrikan investors and the two can team up and make significant investment concerning manufacturing , mining infrastructure etc where people can be imployed throughout the conitent. Great idea
Before they do that they need to solve all the corruption so investors can be sure that only bad business, not government corruption and interference will cost them. If the government could clean up its act, the economic progress would result in better pay for them, making stealing unnecessary.

The Central Business District (CBD), the bustling heart of our city, is in dire need of a comprehensive and ambitious rehabilitation programme. However, it seems that progress towards this much-needed transformation is moving at a snail's pace, leaving us with little hope for any significant changes in the near future.
One cannot help but notice the lack of urgency and action from our esteemed representative, Sakaja, who has had an entire year to devise a well-thought-out plan for the CBD's revitalization. It is disheartening to witness his apparent negligence and disregard for the city's development.
Now, as if to add insult to injury, we find ourselves in a situation where Sakaja is suddenly scrambling to address the impending visit of the King of England. It is difficult to comprehend how this event has taken precedence over the pressing matter of rehabilitating our CBD.
In all honesty, this entire situation feels like an elaborate charade. It is a disservice to the citizens who have been patiently waiting for tangible improvements in our city's core. The lack of progress and the misplaced priorities are nothing short of disappointing.
But the first step to realising a great and serene Nairobi is by evicting Hawkers, we should have a city of order .

Unfortunately, there are currently no plans in place to support them in this regard. As a result, it is highly likely that they will return to their previous locations after a short period of time.

I didn't understand what the "mamas" were saying but overall, I think it is better not to have hawkers all over the place, it is safer for them and the public in general not to mention that it makes the city look good and eases traffic congestion. You often find an entire lane blocked by hawkers and cars and bodas having to driving around them. That said, the government should have planned better and evict them after they have found alternative locations for them since they were used to making money this way. I hope they can build them market areas soon so they are able to feed their children.
The Mama's were complaining about the eviction saying that hawking is their only source of income...thanks for watching and for your continued support 🙏🏾

Kumbe it is the hawkers that have been causing that people traffic jams? Your walk through looks so much more like what it should be. I use to think that there were just too many people in Nairobi. One thing, I heard that a lot of hawkers come from Kiambu and other nearby places. When you went to Thika, I did not see the same craziness there. I feel sorry, a little bit, for them for the business lost but the people who refused the bus parks like green park were wrong. If they could have provided them hawking spaces there, especially if there are several bus parks.

finding them an alternative place will not work, the streets is where their customers are. Muthurwa was built to relocate hawkers, did not work out. This is an issue with poor countries. it is either you ban hawking as a whole or allow them to operate. Rich nations with ample job opportunities and good economies do not have this hawking problem.
