It gets overwhelmingly stressful at SB! But in all honesty, there’s LITERALLY no point in freaking out when it gets crazy busy.... all that does is make things worse! Ya gotta “just keep swimming...”
Lindsey Pruett burnout bc people... I feel the same about being a nurse. Customer service jobs are incredibly difficult these days bc they’re all short staffed. Hospitals shouldn’t be but they are
I worked at Starbucks as my college part time job at 17. I ended up finishing college and wanted to go into my major - the health career so I planned on leaving. Turns out I had gotten pregnant a few months before graduation and every job in the health department wouldn’t hire a 4 month pregnant lady or even offer paid maternity leave or any type of health care benefits before my child would be born. So I went full time with Starbucks and got 100% paid maternity leave for 8 weeks plus 2 weeks nesting time. Yes the pay kinda sucks but I wasn’t expecting to be paid in full while having a child at Starbucks and it was amazing that I did get that great benefit. I ended up having both of my children while employed there because the maternity was so great. My two boys are 15 months apart, I’ve been a partner for 2 1/2 years. I’m being promoted to shift as soon as I get back from my maternity break. I miss working and I stop by often for drinks and to visit. Being promoted will allow me to put a key holder position on my resume and help me find a higher paying job in the future. We had drama/stressful times too but I was able to ignore it and focus on why I was really there- great benefits for my family.
That is pretty awesome about the benefits. I'm glad you were able to make it work for you. I am 46 years old now and just got hired at a Starbucks, so back when I was young, my food service jobs didn't have the benefits, and I just assumed that the correct plan would be to get a degree, and then get a better job of course. Which I did. But It's really cool to read stories like yours
I’ve been at Starbucks for 4.5 years now, treated worse now than the day I started. Management is a mess, this company DOES NOT care about its employees whatsoever. Stay in school! These jobs pay so little and the stress you go through is not worth it at all
been with starbucks 3.5 years, 2 as an SSV. couldn't agree more. it's so much worse for shifts honestly. so much shit to deal with, horrible management, favoritism, not enough pay.. My manager said "you're just a barista right now" that's when I was like okay, fuck this shit, I'm out this time, don't have time for this womans childish unprofessional games.
4 and 1/2 years?? Wow you are a trooper. The longest I worked at food service was almost 4 years at McDonald's. also, not sure if anyone will read this, but would you give two weeks notice? Or just call and say hey, I've got something else going on that I have to do right away, and just quit? I've always given an employer notice, but I feel like for a job that pays only minimum wage, no time off until you're there a year, under 30 hours a week, I can just drop it and not feel too guilty.
IM sorry you went thru ..."hell" to learn a job , you eventually know it isnt a job that is fitted for you. *good on you* thumbs high.... did anyone "smash that" with you? Forgive me if, i am bold to ask that.
I agree! Starbucks needs to pay their baristas way more, especially if they work in a drive-thru store. Drive thru makes it 100x more stressful and busy, it's insane.
The verbal abuse was a nightmare. The customers were just so nasty especially if you’re the cashier. “Hey I want a grade latte. You know what that is, right?” Like.... really? I get you’re a miserable human being, but do you have to make it known to EVERYONE?
I had one lady who didn’t even know what her own drink was and when i told her i didn’t know what she was talking about she said “i figured you wouldn’t” like excuse me.
missironmouse try the abuse from the managers the customers are always so nice to me it was the managers that would pull me in back of the store and tell me what a piece of shit person I am and that like I basically am worthless yeah they definitely are verbally abusive and I have occasionally had that one customer where I'm like oh my God so please tell me how your drink is wrong after me making it for the 4th time
i’ve worked at starbucks for over 2yrs now and personally for me my main issues are that the customers are SO entitled and, secondly, how fast paced it is because of my anxiety struggles. it’s really rough and i cant wait til i finish my degree so i can move on
Jillian Carissa lol ok. Being a barista is considering doing art. The amount of work they put into a drink for $3-6 makes it an ok price. If you can’t afford it, don’t buy it. Just because your paying for a drink doesn’t make you entitled.
I got my job at Starbucks about a month ago, and honestly I’m super disappointed and stressed. Some of my co workers are very nice and helpful while others are rude and act like I’m a burden for them. Honestly, I always feel like I’m left out, and no one talks to me when I try to make any conversations with anyone. Also my manager sucks. I like the job itself but I want them to be friendly and helpful. I want them to bear with me and not act like I’m an alien. I will definitely quit working at Starbucks.... it’s just not for me.
LOL YES! I'm a barsita at a place other than starbucks and I see people try to get me to make them "starbucks" version of cofffee and I just wonder do they really want espresso or sugar???
You just don’t know what to order then lmao. There’s everything from straight espresso, to regular black coffee, to more sugary drinks. Of course they’re going to have options for everyone.
I just started working at a smaller coffee shop in my area and it is my first time working as a barista and I love it! I love how easy going and chill smaller shops are, at this point I couldn't even imagine working in a place like Starbucks!
Smaller shops are more chill because you can do things the way that make you feel comfortable and not forced to do things their way. Starbucks is a big corporation and they make you do things their way and make you a robot. While small companies treat you like a human being
I’m on my 6 months, however I work at Starbucks in a travel plaza. We’re constantly busy and I had 3 weeks training then I was on my own. I hated learning register too. However it’s getting better every day.
The training has really dipped in the last year or two. It’s super frustrating and probably why most people are complaining they just started and don’t get any bar experience. The training isn’t as through as before and people come on the floor less prepared so they end up with the easier jobs. It feels like the company is moving away from making sure their partners are knowledgeable but rather replaceable.
Meghan Le was your starbucks busy/have lots of employees for a shift? It seems like there are already ppl doing bar and register that I am always doing customer support :/
You wanna know y they made money cuts to where it matters now on the floor it is under staff managers don't get breaks. If u complain they say we'll spend ur time better but when u only have a couple people work on the floor it's hard with the crazy drink orders so yea we r crazy buzy might not look it or you might think its easy but oh boy u are wrong. Plus the way some people treat you. I wish they could b in my shoes just for a hour haha but Starbucks is a great place to work it's just the little things that can bring a day down. Its a love hate relationship haha
True, when I worked there, I concentrated on surviving busy times of which there were a lot in San Diego. I would have loved to connect with customers more like I did with regulars, but it just wasnt possible, I'm glad I dont work there anymore, but there were a lot of lessons I took from working there.
All Of Ashley I'm pretty sure its just my location bc its in the mall and its holiday season but the reason I wanted the job was because it seemed like a fun place to work and the employees seem to all be friends. I trained at a different store and everyone was super nice and helpful and patient with me but when I got to my store the majority of co-workers are rude and act like I'm in the way when I'm not sure what to do. The BOH is disgusting, I see roaches daily. Its just really different than anticipated and I wish I had chosen a different store. But! I will say that I enjoy learning about coffee and it teaches you to be patient and organized.
Jordan Evans that does stink. I hope it gets better for you. I had my interview at a different store today and I want to tell the manager I would rather work at that one. I just have a better feeling about it. Your story helped me decide I will say something. So thank you for that.
That honestly just sounds like a location issue...I loved my old store in California, and I just moved to a new store in Pennsylvania and everyone is awesome! Maybe look into a different location, or give it another try and be really proactive in wanting to learn. Sometimes it takes a little bit for people to warm up to others...especially in a crazy job and time of year!
I just started almost a few months ago and like you, I wanted to quit after a month in. It’s gotten a lot easier but, the superiority complex with some of these partners are just insane. They can be so demeaning/rude and you feel like you can’t complain about it cause you’re new. During peak, it’s absolute hell.
I worked at Starbucks for 7 years and 3 were as a shift. I think people who have never worked before Starbucks (mainly teens) have to temper their expectations in any job... it’s work. Starbucks has benefits that most employers don’t offer including competitive wages for zero experience. Not everyone works in a job where tips are part of the culture so even “sucky” tips should be appreciated. The cleanliness and sanitary practices mentioned here are standard in any food establishment. As someone who had to worry about making rent and buying food for my family, Starbucks was all it ever promised to be: a job with room for advancement, retirement plans, benefits etc. I suppose if you are someone who lives at home with Mom and dad you can turn your nose up at these things but what starter jobs offer teenagers a perpetual playground and substantial pay? I learned this trick that makes any job (and life for that matter) easier: find something or multiple things you love about your job. Sorry kiddos but no matter what job you are in there is some sleeve rolling to be done and in the end you either learn to love something about what you do for a Check or always be discontented in any employment.
I’m actually really happy that you didn’t just bash Starbucks like most people would do. You actually listed a lot of pros and didn’t constantly bring up the cons. You kept them separate and also made sure that we knew you were talking about YOUR experiences. This is an awesome video!
I worked at McDonalds and the stress levels in a busy store are insane. I had managers leave during lunch rush to get high, leaving me as the only person bagging orders. ANY business that is quick service (whether it's coffee or food) is going to have stress because patrons who NEEEEEED that coffee or egg mcmuffin are pushy and have no perspective.
It’s so true. I worked there for a little over a month and it was a nightmare. My manager was cool when I started but when it became clear I wasn’t feeling the job she started to become passive aggressive and made it very uncomfortable. I also had this coworker who was about 20 years older than me and she would stress me out on the regular because she was so high strung about literally everything. At least 10 times a shift she would be up my ass about some little thing like how to “properly” open a trash bag or hitting a button on my register to show that we were busy (the receipt question at the end of the transaction). The customers were another issue entirely.... don’t get me started. All in all my store was filled with drama, backstabbers, and drama... oh wait I said that. So glad I ran.
that's why i left! people would go outside and disappear. My store had a drive through and the people that would be on front cashier, DTO and window would leave, while i was making drinks, then i'd have to DTO, do the window and front. LIKE it was a mess. And the people that would leave were the manager's favorites, that's another thing the manager showed favoritism. I worked there two years as well, left... then thought i missed it, went back for two days and was QUICKLY reminded why I left. That level of stress isn't worth the pay.
I’m working at a Starbucks drive through, it’s the most stressful thing ever. There’s been a few times I’ve wanted to just walk out, the management is awful and the customers are so rude! There’s a few times I’ve been left on DT Window too and i just go home and cry after a shift. The hours are soooo long! 5am to 3pm or 3pm to 12am
I'm looking into maybe working at Starbucks but I don't think it will cover all my expenses like car phone clothes traveling and so I'd like to know how much are you payed per hour? (If it's not a secret;) And what about tips?
I worked at a Starbucks and quit after 3 months. The people I worked with weren’t very friendly. They didn’t train enough and threw me on the floor first day even though I didn’t know where all the buttons on the screen were and the line kept getting backed up because of it. Customers called drinks out of their names and got irritated when I didn’t understand. The stress was too much. Train better and longer and there wouldn’t be a problem.
Jessica lynn myprettygirl Kylie is Kendall Jenner ‘s sister you twin. “You look like your ( wrong grammar. ) Kendall Jenners sister” Do you not understand.
Most of what Taylor said depends on who you work with. For example, I'm 16 right now and working at Starbucks and I love it. I started out just like her and I'm also the youngest. There is no drama, and we're not restricted on what we wear or anything. They only thing they try and make you aware of is how loud you are because of the fact that many people go to Starbucks to concentrate and do work. All of the people I work with are very open and happy. We work as a family and whenever someone is down we make drinks for them or get them food from outside our job. The ones who have been there longer take the less experienced people, me for example, under their wing and teach, explain and show them tricks as well as the ways of Starbucks. The ones who train new people go as far as making charts and taking multiple days to one-on-one train them. Because I'm the youngest, I work the fewest hours (12hrs/week) and earn roughly $30 in tips each week. People even come in just to tell us they love our story and how open and friendly we are and that we make amazing drinks. In all, it really just depends on who you work with.
jasmine deleon that sounds a lot like my location! Only recently things have been a little stressful, we’ve had quite a few of our reliable baristas and shifts leave or transfer and it’s been hard. We got a new ASM and god has it been rough. The whole energy in the store has changed, no one is really excited to be there anymore but we all still have each others back. And the customers still love us. So despite the recent changes, our store sounds a lot like yours!
Tbh same a lot of the people who hate their job at Starbucks is because of their coworkers and not the job itself. I can honestly say my Starbucks has a great team and we all love each other with the exception of one person but other than that it’s really your coworkers who make or break the job and less of the job itself.
it might have to do with locations and such too? a store in a more remote area is different than a store in the middle of NY or LA where they get a mix of business ppl, tourists, crazies and everyday ppl. i’m glad your experience was a good one tho!
I’ve been with Starbucks for 2 years now and I love it! My first year was horrible though. I was at a horrible store with negative partners, rude customers, and nobody wanted to help. My new store opened 1 year ago and it’s been the greatest year! All of my coworkers are so helpful, positive and fun. It is a lot to learn but it all comes to you over time
I just started about a month ago and I haven’t even been on bar. The staff is so understaffed that they have me on customer support or doing the cleaning. My coworkers are okay but when I ask them questions they make me feel dumb. The place I work at is always busy and I feel so overwhelmed because they throw me at register. I feel so exhausted working there. I don’t know if I want to continue. Is it so bad to quit after a month? 😪
A month in I still wanted to quit, but It gets easier so I would push through. Give it a solid 6 months then see how you feel after that! Keep pushing through!
omg literally just quit, and I️ live in Seattle so I️ was getting really good tips but you’re so right I️ was super stressed and it had such an impact on my life, I️ definitely want to work at a local shop!
I worked there for 3 weeks then never went back lol it was so awful. First of all in my interview I said I was looking for at least 30 hours a week, manager said that would be fine but when I started working I was only scheduled 13 hours a week, every week. One main reason I wanted to work there was the college program and you need at least 20 hours a week to do that. They also never actually trained me, I cried every shift cause I felt so stupid like I was just in the way since I had no clue what to do. Every shift they ended up just making me do trash and dishes the entire time
Working for small places is so nice. My first 2 jobs were for big places and we're really hectic. When I worked at Canadian Tire I ended up crying behind the customer service desk. Now I work for a local convenience store that's owned by people who grew up in my small town and they own this store and only this store. No dress code (which is awesome cause I express myself through clothes very much so), one free food thing for lunch/dinner when on shift, free tea and coffee all day, so many compliments! Since I started here a week ago I have had SO many middle to old aged women say they love my hair. I have one dress that gets a lot of compliments. It is such a self confidence boost lol. And I recognize a lot of people who I can take time to chat with instead of rushing through a huge line of customers. Working for a smaller or local business is so much nicer especially for people with anxiety - like I have.
I really enjoyed your video! I've been with Starbucks for 18 years and I found all of your comments to be relatable and true! For someone who is new or considering working for Starbucks, this video is an honest and fair review. Good luck in your future business ventures. I would love to have my own shop. As a long term partner I've found ways to be creative. I love inventing new drinks and I share them with coworkers and suggest them to customers with positive results. So that's fun. A con of being a long term barista for any company is repetitive motion injury. I kept it at bay until just the last couple of years and it's become a problem. Just a little extra insight, there. I was very shy as a new partner, too, and had to be coached to speak up. I've become much more confident and better with people in my time at Starbucks. That has been beneficial in all areas of life. Thanks again! ☕
overwhelming might be an understatement. Lots to know lots to learn and no time to really do that. I agree with a lot of what you had to say. Some of the reasons you left were the reasons I left.
I worked at Starbucks for 4 years and in 3 countries : France, Canada and now UK. Now, I really want to leave because I am just done. No gratefulness... quite a stressful job. I have been supervisor and the company’s expectations are very high and you feel like abused etc
I work at a Starbucks that’s in a store. There’s two people working it most of the day, but closing there’s only one person. Most of the time I find myself, a seventeen year old girl, frantically trying to do ten things at once when there’s a giant line and I’m the only one working. Only four people are fully trained Starbucks employees and it’s a nightmare
Claire Leventon I know how you feel, the job is stressful and never have two workers , then the costumers feel entitled and needy, I’m on my last straw of quitting
I'm really thankful for my job at Starbucks. I've been there for about 2 years and only about six months in my store manager along with the shifts were all saying I should move up in the company. Previously, I was disrespected SO MUCH by managers at other jobs and I never understood why since I tried so hard. (Barely asked for anything, always wanted to fix myself if I felt I wasn't good enough). While I don't think I want to get too...trapped in the corporate world of Starbucks, it's a wonderful feeling to be truly appreciated for doing my best and know I can always count on my managers when I need them. They helped me realize I actually am a good worker and deserve to be recognized for that.
A friend of mine worked at (British) Starbucks and literally after every shift she would just kinda collapse. Once I was meeting her after work to go shopping and we just sat in a coffee shop for about an hour before we started simply because she was dead on her feet. She also has anxiety. She started to develop it around that time so I swear working at Starbucks didn't help.
You’re so right! I’m in a very high trafficked location and the stress is literally causing me health issues. Benefits or not I’m looking for a way out because I need insurance. The costumers can be so rude and entitled it’s mind boggling.
For me... working at Starbucks as my first job has been a great experience.. like.. its changed me literally.. but like u said.. the hardest part about Starbucks is the immensly overwhelming stress... I feel like a part of my soul dies every 8-hour shift I do. The strict rules work for me since Starbucks or even being a barista isn't my end goal, and it gives me an insight of what working under a big company is like.. I got lucky tho since my store has a pretty good number of co-workers of my age.. even tho some of them are very odd and it is enraging when someone calls out and we all suffer..
My experience was pretty similar. Once a few weeks into working I got scolded by a shift for being too slow on drive thru, which is crazy busy, never a break, car after car. I was still learning how to handle, answering the drive thru, handling money and handing out drinks. It was so stressful and she wasnt a nice person, and it showed in her demeanor to everyone who wasnt a customer. Once, the barista on front register kept not writing out cups when it was busy af and I had to ask customers what their drink was. It was embarrassing. Another time I was left to man drive, front and bar while the shift counted out pastries for the next day because we were short staffed. It was a nightmare! 😱 oh man I could go on and on with the stories.
I’ve been working at Starbucks for a year now and I absolutely love it. I think it honestly just depends on the people who work at your location because I love all the people who I work with. They are all so supportive and will step in to help if you need it. If you get stressed just say so and they can swap out your position so you can do something slower. Yes, there are those grumpy customers that tell but in my experience there are more good people than bad. I enjoy and love my job, it’s just your own perspective and attitude I think
Haha I clicked because I used to work for them. I can relate to a lot of what you said. I worked at one with a drive thru and it was double the stress. Especially when partners would call out. I remember running drive thru alone. Customers could also be rude. Patience is a must for this place. Glad you’re expanding your horizons :)
Your training sounds like it was so much better than mine, I felt dumb every time I would ask a question & they didn’t even teach me the details like date dotting & all that stuff. I worked there for almost 2 years & just quit this month. There was so much drama it was ridiculous🙄. I get the benefits are good but the experience I had at my location was just so negative that it wasn’t even worth the benefits. I actually sometimes wanted to cry before I would go to my shifts & I agree with you about how a lot of the workers are unstable! I would always wonder how some of them even got hired
I'm sorry to hear that. I was a little generous in my explanation of them even in this video, my experience wasn't too positive either :( but i do know some people who absolutely love the environment so just must not be a place were fit for!
I watched this job just before my interview as a Barista for Starbucks and went for it anyway. 3 months down I am a Shift Manager and I love my job - but I love the stress. I don't know why, in the U.K it's not as busy as the US but sometimes it can get super busy and I love those times, my shifts always go so quickly, I do agree a little with the staffing though. It is a stressful job and they don't seem to always hire the right people to handle it 😅
I get $50 a week on average for tips. I don’t think that’s bad when most jobs don’t even have tips. I also feel like I can be myself and my store is super cool and no drama. Maybe I lucked out. (:
So, I just submitted an application (mostly bc I've always liked their drinks and loved watching them work. Also the pay is actually really good now) and even after watching this I still wanna try, though it is helping me prepare for what's gonna happen, thanks for explaining this!
I started a month ago and I’m about to quit. I have a chronic illness and this is indeed the worse job to have if you have a chronic illness. Not to mention I work with my sister (I can see why companies say they won’t let you work with siblings because they stress you out soooo much) panic attacks, headaches, my pain is so much worse. Starbucks can be great for some people. But it’s definitely not great for me. Don’t be afraid to put in your two weeks or quit if you’re job isn’t working out for you everyone. You come first.
I never worked at Starbucks, but I did work at a US Tim Hortons. It was my first job as well and I was 18 when I started there. I loved it so much. I totally agree though, when I first started, learning how to make all of the different coffee drinks was a little over whelming and stressful. Plus the some of the management wasn't so nice. Like they expected me to just know everything right away and would get annoyed if I had to ask a question or forgot how to make a drink. When I first started at TH, I was shy as well, but after I got to know everybody and started to become friends with them, everything changed. Now I'm very outgoing and also once I got the job down and knew how to do everything, the management started to become more friendly and I actually started to have fun at that job. Sometimes I miss it, not even gonna lie. :)
I was trained at a different location & was sent to my official location after working at my training location for 2.5 weekends & let me just say not a day go by where I wished to stay at my training location
The fact the you can move up at Starbucks so easily is not necessaarily an indication that it's a great company. It may be just that people are quitting and leaving vacancies that you can fill once you've been there long enough to learn the business. I've heard a LOT about people quitting right and left so just take that into consideration.
It looks like it truly depends on the area where you're working. I'm in middle Europe and the place where I'm working is wonderful. I couldn't have a proper trainer but every coworker was so welcoming from the very first day: they told me everything, I had to do everything I knew from the first moment I've learned it, so I got used to it very fast. Everyone is so kind! I'm also 16, so I'm new but I don't feel like I'm worth less so I'm satisfied already. I hope I won't regret saying these! ^^
I hope it stays that way for you! And yes its totally just dependent on the store, the management and coworkers can make or break it for you! I hope you continue to love it!
My team is awesomeness! So while i don't intend to be a barista forever and sometimes customers do suck, I am enjoying my time here. Overall its a happy place. Some partners come back to hang out with us on their off days.
I worked for Starbucks for 3 1/2 years. Yes, very stressful, overwhelming, and there is lots to learn. The store that i worked at for 2-2 1/2 years it was one of the busiest stores in the district & region. The raises weren't great either, you could work your tail off and for what another .10 an hour. And they went from raises everything 6 months, to once a year. My last raise there for the year was .23. Part of the reason I quit was also because of the management at my store. I would help out at other stores and the management there was great, and very appreciative of the knowledge and help I bought to their store. I'd go back to my store and just feel unappreciated by the store management. Now the shift supervisor's I worked with were great! The store I worked at it was very hard to get promoted. I had fun while I worked there, it made me have a greater appreciation for coffee, & for those behind the counter. Starbucks and I have a love hate relationship lol.
I love this video! I worked for Starbucks for 3years and can relate so much to what you have addressed in this video. I left at the end of last year too so congrats on getting out :) x
I am barista coffee bean & tea leaves in malaysia.. I have a dream to work in Starbucks however the payment quite lower compared to coffee bean...but i love both coffee bar
I've noticed that its really hard to move up in Starbucks position wise, like for example once we become trainers (like me) we still only make minimum wage like all other baristas but we get an additional $75 per a trainee. That's like a 6 hour day here, which isn't much considering you train your barista for a week, full days doing so.
Haha I love working at Starbucks! It's crazy, but it's probably the best job I've ever had (or maybe that says something about my other jobs haha). I also thrive in fast-paced jobs, so my experience may just be different. I totally see how having creative freedom is so nice though. I'm also a small business owner, so I could see how being able to talk directly to management would be useful. Thanks for the insight! It's definitely not a job for everyone! :)
I disliked my experience working for starbucks. I wasnt trained on drinks by anyone except by one shift. The other shifts just yelled at me, used me to clean or stick me on register. I didn't get any good training. I was only there around 2 months and hated it. I ended up quitting after one shift treated me really badly. And when I talked to the manager she said 'yeah I've had problems with him before. I'll talk to him again' meanwhile a week prior she said she didnt know why we had a high turnover rate.
Hi, I'm taylor and I ended up getting a job at a downtown Starbucks. There's no drive thrus, and I am getting my schedule soon to then eventually start training. My plan is to update my monthly experience... I'll be back..
I worked at a cool fee shop chain called Xandros, who doesn't really exist anymore, but they have me 3 days of training at a class before even going to my store. Years later I worked at Starbucks and they gave me 1 day of training like that. Deval years later I worked at a different Starbucks and they gave me no training like that. Maybe a few hours of reading the manual in the store. Then they won't let you take the book home to study at home. I had a terrible time learning recipes.
I am totally with you on this, Tay. No matter how much one might love one's job, sometimes there comes a time when it's just time to move on. Even Jesus said "Friend, go up higher" So, now is your time to go up higher. Congratulations and I hope it all works out! 👏👏👏
I study for my job. I work at a specialty coffee shop. The whole reason i started working there was because I had so much curiosity about coffee and the owner liked my passion for it. And yeah, I find that it makes a more enjoyable experience for both the customer and myself if I knowledgeable about coffee.
A lot of the points you're hitting are a lot of the main reasons why I left Starbucks. Especially the lack of promotion & the lack of maturity from some employees. My store was definitely chaotic. Miss it, but definitely was just too dramatic.
I wish every Starbucks customer could work at Starbucks for a day to understand how complicated it is just to get you drip coffee. For example I’m always worried that your drip coffee tastes like crap because we are supposed to change it every 30 minutes minimum and we don’t. And when you order your latte with 3 adjustments we have to search through a menu of like 10,000 items that we have memorized to type your exact order . Then we have memorized hundreds of recipes to make that drink the best way possible. We can also tell you how to order that same drink in the cheapest way possible or how to order it the most efficient way possible. We don’t tell people this unless they ask because we don’t want to appear rude. But just FYI an upside down Grande americano with no water , add 2% milk steamed and add caramel drizzle and 3 pumps vanilla Is the same thing as a caramel macchiato for $1.50 cheaper. You’re welcome.
I’ve worked for Starbucks a little over a year now - they just decreased our 6 month “raise” from 5% to 3% and got rid of QUASA so cleanliness standards are decreased. I think for a casual minimum-wage job there is way too much work and training that goes into it for what you get out of it.
Morgan Stevens I’m not sure ! My store is in BC Canada and we got our last audit last week and it’s supposed to be the last one ever. I’ve been told It’s because QUASA is costing the company too much money.
I work for a license store so we don't get any of the benefits of being a partner at Starbucks. This is because I work in an academic hall at a University. Although, I do value the opportunities I have gained by working for Starbucks such as learning all the ins and outs of coffee. I was fortunate enough to participate in the Starbucks Coffee Master program last summer and I feel what I learned is super valuable knowledge! I love sharing that knowledge with other people, it's just something that most people aren't too keen on learning.
i work at a place similar to starbucks but its way smaller and the really nice thing is that all the stores are owned by people and they can basically do what they want with the shop as long as they follow certain roles and that makes working there super nice cuz it feels like you work at a independent shop but you still have the education and security that comes with a company
OMG I just saw this, ive been working there for a year and customers are RUDE. Like if someone is making your drink , dont yell at them??? But, coworkers are totally weird, immature, and managers are mean too. It is stressful forsure, im only working there for the free schooling lol
Working for Starbucks for 3 years, what I get out of it is that the management team can be insanely unproffessional. But that can just be my area though, even though I've been to 3 different stores
I've worked clothing retail for 35 years since I was 16. There is no way I'd work food & beverage retail - *TOO FAST-PACED* ... not that clothing doesn't have its nightmares - OH it does. And yes, the female coworkers everywhere and anywhere are usually and unfortunately, nasty.
I started October 31st and honestly I'm starting to be iffy on staying I was working 4 days a week about 24-25 hours and needed help on getting info to get my rent adjusted and my SM showed me where my stubs are so there for he seen my pay now all of a sudden I'm scheduled for 2 days this week and 3 the next I work in a busy store and it's the holidays so I find it wierd why I'm not scheduled for anymore since extra help should be needed on top of that I feel like I'm in the way cause I don't know how to really do anything so most of the time I'm dropped off at drive thru greeting customers, scanning, and handing out items or front register my rent went from $300 somethin to $759 because I make $12 an hour and I'm in south Carolina so since we unionized we'll be makin $15 next year so it'll be even hire and 2 or 3 days isn't goin to work and now I'm just thinking about getting a $9 an hour job that's full time
just started, dude i was literally rushed through certification and she literally told us she wanted us to get through certification quickly just so she wouldn't look bad. she literally made the drinks for us for certification and passed us hella quick. we didn't even make frapps, just basic hot bar and basic teas. then on my first day the guidebook of how to make drinks isn't even available (gatekeeping much? did one of them steal the guidebook and keeps it to study on their own?) whenever i ask questions they get irritated its my first friggn day, plus the people who i am learning from are brand new also and they are screwing up all the drinks! i swear im just going to stand on oven until a manager shows up with the guidebook so i can actually make the drinks properly and not wing it with a bunch of impatient noobs who can't even help or notice me, who literally start making the drink I am halfway through and I end up having to throw my perfectly well made attempt away cus im apparently a ghost
I’m about to turn a month at Starbucks I actually had two weeks of training but of those two weeks it was literally 2 days of hot and cold bar and they didn’t even show me how to make the specialty frapps only the permanent ones🙃 and the fact that they keep newbies on drive thru prevents them from getting bar experience and you can tell when people are getting annoyed when you start asking questions idk how long I’ll stay it’s so stressful for such little pay 😑 best of luck!!! And the fact that I’m an opener and my trainer didn’t show me anything about how to open the store 🙃
I knew my time at Starbucks was up when one time, while I was handing off a Frappuccino and called it a frap my manager legit stopped everything and yelled at me in front of the customers saying “this isn’t McDonald’s we call them frappachinos”. Fucking embarrassing I bolted after that.
It's hard to get a job in starbucks here in the Philippines, most of the time they are only accepting like people with finished degrees and had experiences, but for teenagers and making it of somewhat of a part time thing is by far impossible. I get it that they want employees that are pretty independent and can manuever to such a fast pace environment, I mean that's less of a hassle thing if you think about it, rather than hiring employees that needed to start from scratch. I just hope that they can be more open to things. Plus I do agree that location is a major factor in this job, and according to some (and this is just a rumor btw that's been circulating here idk if it's true) you're not allowed to switch locations, it's either you stay or you get fired.
Yeah, I quit my job(Sonic), because of co-workers. I loved being a carhop, and the customers were ok(some were arseholes), But every night I distinctly remember that when the main managers leave, the assistant managers would yell at everyone, tell us that they hate us(yes, every night shift), and they would even yell at you for trying to help your team. I couldn't even help the ice cream dude clean his station when there was 20 ice cream orders at once. It was crazy. He got yelled at for not doing everything himself, and I got yelled at for trying to help. Jesus, I hated the Sonic managers. I've never been treated like such trash by a job before.
i've just started at starbucks and i'm not sure if it's because i'm hired through another company (i work at the airport and all fast food/restaurants there are managed by a bigger company instead of the franchise) but our health and safety is disgusting, we don't have soap to wash our hands with and i have to empty bins and then i'm asked to go on bar without washing my hands. honestly makes me cringe, my coworkers think it's disgusting as well
I know this video is about a year old, but here’s my input. I’ve been working for Starbucks for about 2 years now. I’ve worked for other coffee chains, restaurants, retail, etc. Starbucks, at least in my area, is the best. They do take better care of their employees than other places. Pay is always above minimum wage, at least here in NYC. Maybe it’s a NY thing, idk. But... after working for over a year in one store, which I actually enjoyed, I transferred to a different store closer to my home. I’ve been here for about a month and a half and I must say... I hate it. I dread going to work everyday, where before I loved it. Sure, there were the occasional bad days, but it was bearable. Now it’s just not worth it for me and an currently looking for a new job. So my take is that the location is everything. And in this particular store, it’s a mixture of bad management and bad customers. My coworkers are all nice, but the clientele is the worst. My guess is that some places have nastier people. And my manager, while also nice, is super disorganized, which definitely doesn’t help the situation.
Even watching Starbucks employees work stresses me out.
Yeah I feel it!
It gets overwhelmingly stressful at SB! But in all honesty, there’s LITERALLY no point in freaking out when it gets crazy busy.... all that does is make things worse! Ya gotta “just keep swimming...”
lol
actually makes me relaxed 😌
“I honestly love my job, I think I’ll do it for the rest of my life!” -Taylor Nicole, 2016
I just watched that video right before this one and I was thinking to myself "what changed?"
She loves being a barista. She just didn't love working for Starbucks.
crying ghost hahahaha hi was just about to say this!
Lindsey Pruett burnout bc people... I feel the same about being a nurse. Customer service jobs are incredibly difficult these days bc they’re all short staffed. Hospitals shouldn’t be but they are
That’s what I was thinking.
This is amazing Aubree
I'm happy for you that things turned out well :) xx
That is pretty awesome about the benefits. I'm glad you were able to make it work for you. I am 46 years old now and just got hired at a Starbucks, so back when I was young, my food service jobs didn't have the benefits, and I just assumed that the correct plan would be to get a degree, and then get a better job of course. Which I did. But It's really cool to read stories like yours
How are you doing?
I finished my first day of training and quit LMFAO. Fuck that place.
I feel this same 🥺
IM sorry you went thru ..."hell" to learn a job , you eventually know it isnt a job that is fitted for you.
Aw its such a bummer that some people are like that. Try not to take it too personally!
I had one lady who didn’t even know what her own drink was and when i told her i didn’t know what she was talking about she said “i figured you wouldn’t” like excuse me.
Ugh. People can seriously be the WORST. LIke. It's just coffee.
missironmouse try the abuse from the managers the customers are always so nice to me it was the managers that would pull me in back of the store and tell me what a piece of shit person I am and that like I basically am worthless yeah they definitely are verbally abusive and I have occasionally had that one customer where I'm like oh my God so please tell me how your drink is wrong after me making it for the 4th time
Ive had customer throw drinks at me through the window and honestly if it weren't for my favorite regulars and coworkers I would have left.
i’ve worked at starbucks for over 2yrs now and personally for me my main issues are that the customers are SO entitled and, secondly, how fast paced it is because of my anxiety struggles. it’s really rough and i cant wait til i finish my degree so i can move on
Well I mean you're paying like 3-6 for a cup of coffee lol
Jillian Carissa and..?
@@emily-schultheis lmao nvm you're slow
Jillian Carissa lol ok. Being a barista is considering doing art. The amount of work they put into a drink for $3-6 makes it an ok price. If you can’t afford it, don’t buy it. Just because your paying for a drink doesn’t make you entitled.
@@emily-schultheis they dont put in a lot of work putting ice and syrup in a blender that blends itself is not a lot of work lol
Rahim Hussain ... oh my god .. it's happen to me also.. but i need money that's why i can't quit right now.. 😟😟😟😟😟
@@rafydact3864 same!!! I am trying to find something else...anything is better then there.
I feel you
Omggg!!! Next week i start training in Starbucks
I’m going through the same thing
Starbucks is coffee for people that don't like coffee.
LOL YES! I'm a barsita at a place other than starbucks and I see people try to get me to make them "starbucks" version of cofffee and I just wonder do they really want espresso or sugar???
zizzy6239 I’m also a barista. Starbucks isn’t the worst. I’ve found them to be pretty consistent, which is important when it comes to coffee.
Boodieman72 no, that's Dunkin donuts
You just don’t know what to order then lmao. There’s everything from straight espresso, to regular black coffee, to more sugary drinks. Of course they’re going to have options for everyone.
to be honest, starbucks is like for the 14 year olds who claim they "love" coffee
Yesterday just found ur channel yesterday. Watch “ things baristas hate”. Next day get notification “why I left Starbucks “ 😂😂😂😂
Lol right. Ironic. I am still a barista though! I just left Starbucks to work for a locally owned coffee business instead!
Taylor Nicole do they have nitro cold brew? Cuz that’s the shiznit!!
SAME!! And she was like “ I’m probably gonna have this job forever then I saw this 😂😂
LukeTv 20 she is still a barista though
Yeah I'm still a barista. I just work at a local shop instead
Thank God I love Starbucks from the good side of the counter, the customer side lol
That is true! Best to stay on that side of it!
Kiss Kiss good side? Lmao ok.
Nisa Carla Smith aww why not?
I just started working at a smaller coffee shop in my area and it is my first time working as a barista and I love it! I love how easy going and chill smaller shops are, at this point I couldn't even imagine working in a place like Starbucks!
that is so awesome I am so glad you're enjoying it! Its such a fun job!
Smaller shops are more chill because you can do things the way that make you feel comfortable and not forced to do things their way. Starbucks is a big corporation and they make you do things their way and make you a robot. While small companies treat you like a human being
i’m in tears. i just watched the “what baristas hate” video and now i’m watching “why i left starbucks”
Lol, ya do what ya gotta do sometimes
MinSuga Genius same😓 I am watching all the barista videos
I’m tempted to leave honestly.
she says why at 9:32... your welcome :)
Karla Cuberos thanks
Thank
THANKS
It shouldn’t take 9 mins to get to the point smhhhhh
Bless you
I’m on my fourth month & I have no formal training, I’ve had to teach myself everything.
Dang I'm sorry to hear that Molly! Thats not fair to you!
Molly N. I'm on my 3rd same
Molly N. Same. I’d talk to my manager about it and she’d always say ‘we’ll training is self motivated so....’ not helpful at all. Horrible
I’m on my 6 months, however I work at Starbucks in a travel plaza. We’re constantly busy and I had 3 weeks training then I was on my own. I hated learning register too. However it’s getting better every day.
That is every job practically. So you aren't special lol
expectation: "I'll come home smelling like coffee!"
reality: *comes home smelling like bad milk and cinnamon dolce*
sounds good when I come home I smell like trash and damn nasty bathroom stop complain!
Thats a bummer to hear. We can hope it gets better!
starchislife completely agree! I’m almost on my third month there and I only had 3 hrs of bar time.
starchislife I was actually taught bar stuff on my second day
They don’t train people at sbux, I wasn’t and neither was anyone else after me at my store
Meghan Le was your starbucks busy/have lots of employees for a shift? It seems like there are already ppl doing bar and register that I am always doing customer support :/
Baristas back then used to be friendly like actually personable. Now they’re robotic and over worked ! That’s why I mobile order now
You wanna know y they made money cuts to where it matters now on the floor it is under staff managers don't get breaks.
Hibiscus Angel true
I just feel stress al the time. I just feel like i am a robot and not person
we’re still personable & real, living people...wow!
I started at Starbucks a couple weeks ago and I'm super disappointed
Jordan Evans why so? Just asking because I just got hired. Thanks!
I just read all the replies and I would agree! Its definitely dependent on location and coworkers and such. You could love it at a different store!
True, but you will get more and more comfortable! it gets better!
That's exactly how I feel and I thought I could tell supervisor how stressed I am and it's like no one cares
Andrew In Action don’t be jealous of younger people with better opportunities than you 💁♀️
covfefe Ummm not sure where you got that from so I’ve just made up my mind that you are a troll.
Ok, good for you I suppose?
ianthia not sure what you mean but ok 👍 thanks 😂
Definitely agree. On my 3rd year, great company.
Dang sorry to hear that! Poor management totally changes the culture!
Kendal, is that you
Lol not the first time I've heard that!
Omggg I just realized that
Omg, ur profile picture looks like the Staggering Beauty website :0
i dont know why but she reminds me of kendall jenner
For me it’s the facial structure and the eyebrows
And that choking neck thing
That's how I feel rn
That sounds like a nightmare :/ Were the customers really that bad?? I never go to Starbucks unless it’s Christmas time.
that's why i left! people would go outside and disappear.
I feel all of that on a spiritual level lol
Watching your video I was like YES YES TRUE! lol
Oh yeah and once I get a job I want to save up for college
Id go craaaaazy working at a Starbucks but I have worked Retail trust me We work so hard. Retailers & fast food workers need to be Paid More !!
They are very fast paced jobs for sure!
You look like your Kendal Jenners sister!!
Ive heard that so much!
I KNEW she reminded me of Kendall Jenner when I saw her. I thought it was just me
Kylie?
Puff Puff Pass no Kendall
Jessica lynn myprettygirl Kylie is Kendall Jenner ‘s sister you twin. “You look like your ( wrong grammar. ) Kendall Jenners sister” Do you not understand.
Yes! Lots of female coworkers = lots of drama. I hate to say it, but it's so true.
It is! Not every girl is that way but its a way higher risk lol
I work in a company that is mostly men and I can tell you with certainty that there's a lot of drama caused by them.
I loved my coworkers and my managers!! If it werent for the customers, I'd have loved the job...
Anissa B. The male - dominated places I worked were waaaaay more dramatic!! Same stuff just add in some male ego...
So. So. True. And It's so unfortunate.
It is a lot to learn but it all comes to you over time
how are you today?
I just started about a month ago and I haven’t even been on bar. The staff is so understaffed that they have me on customer support or doing the cleaning. My coworkers are okay but when I ask them questions they make me feel dumb. The place I work at is always busy and I feel so overwhelmed because they throw me at register. I feel so exhausted working there. I don’t know if I want to continue. Is it so bad to quit after a month? 😪
A month in I still wanted to quit, but It gets easier so I would push through. Give it a solid 6 months then see how you feel after that! Keep pushing through!
thank you!!
I just work for a local coffee stand!
oh right! you want to create your own coffee business? I wish you much success on your journey !!
you will have your "ah-hah!" moment! just wait! it'll click for you
omg literally just quit, and I️ live in Seattle so I️ was getting really good tips but you’re so right I️ was super stressed and it had such an impact on my life, I️ definitely want to work at a local shop!
Its so fun! You should start to apply at local shops!
I worked at a location in Washington too recently.
Any other former Baristas feeling this video in their soul rn?
6:08 “They just kinda wanna make you a little Starbucks robot” I love that 😂
RIIIIGHT
I worked there for 3 weeks then never went back lol it was so awful. First of all in my interview I said I was looking for at least 30 hours a week, manager said that would be fine but when I started working I was only scheduled 13 hours a week, every week. One main reason I wanted to work there was the college program and you need at least 20 hours a week to do that. They also never actually trained me, I cried every shift cause I felt so stupid like I was just in the way since I had no clue what to do. Every shift they ended up just making me do trash and dishes the entire time
Im sorry to hear that Sam! If i had been your supervisor I would've given you good training and let you do more than just the dirty work!!
Noa Lenora Art ah you go!!
Starbucks was my first job and I have to say it was ok for a while but the management was extremely unreliable and as a student that is just horrible.
Thats true it can be hard!!
I worked for the bux for almost 7 years. I was a shift for about 4. Im so glad I'm done with that place.
Thats a common end statement right there if ive ever heard one!
overwhelming might be an understatement. Lots to know lots to learn and no time to really do that. I agree with a lot of what you had to say. Some of the reasons you left were the reasons I left.
Dang, sorry to hear you had a hard time there as well. Hopefully you still learned something!
I totally get that Starbucks is super busy. It gets more busy if the store you’re working has a drive thru or located in a mall.
Drive thru sucks.
For me... working at Starbucks as my first job has been a great experience.. like.. its changed me literally.. but like u said.. the hardest part about Starbucks is the immensly overwhelming stress...
The customers are rude afff
Canadian Cuck Fighter so fckn true
not gay people
I’ve been working at Starbucks for a year now and I absolutely love it.
It is a stressful job and they don't seem to always hire the right people to handle it 😅
I currently work for Starbucks and I completely AGREE with you!!!!!!!!
I get $50 a week on average for tips. I don’t think that’s bad when most jobs don’t even have tips. I also feel like I can be myself and my store is super cool and no drama. Maybe I lucked out. (:
Yeah thats great! Im glad you're in a location you enjoy!
Allyson Wonderlandd i get like $2.. 😭 i work at a college one and barely anyone tips haha but i still love it
So, I just submitted an application (mostly bc I've always liked their drinks and loved watching them work. Also the pay is actually really good now) and even after watching this I still wanna try, though it is helping me prepare for what's gonna happen, thanks for explaining this!
I’ve worked there for 12 years and finally quit. I could tell you horror stories. Was thinking of doing a podcast. What do you think 🤔?
I started a month ago and I’m about to quit. I have a chronic illness and this is indeed the worse job to have if you have a chronic illness. Not to mention I work with my sister (I can see why companies say they won’t let you work with siblings because they stress you out soooo much) panic attacks, headaches, my pain is so much worse. Starbucks can be great for some people. But it’s definitely not great for me. Don’t be afraid to put in your two weeks or quit if you’re job isn’t working out for you everyone. You come first.
“People think it’s a magical fairy land and it’s not.. you literally lose your mind everyday” lmao fr 😂
I was hired in as a Shift 5 months ago and my mind is blown with the amount of anxiety involved.
Girl i totally understand. I love and hate my Starbucks honestly it’s such a mess sometimes and it gets so stressful but oh well work is work
That is true! Whatever pays the bills!
Yesssss I loved the fast paced environment if you have good coworkers its super fun. Glad you found a place you love!
“females can be hard to work with” omg literally spot on
Hi, I'm taylor and I ended up getting a job at a downtown Starbucks. There's no drive thrus, and I am getting my schedule soon to then eventually start training. My plan is to update my monthly experience... I'll be back..
it is stressful i work at the 24 hour one in Houston been there for 3 years and things get crazy every year
I worked at a cool fee shop chain called Xandros, who doesn't really exist anymore, but they have me 3 days of training at a class before even going to my store.
Danggggg what. I didn't know they took away QUASA, that was like the one thing I felt like made starbucks stand out for its incredible cleanliness.
Do you know if this was a company-wide shift? Because i live in central WA and all the stores in my city have been getting QUASA visits the last week!
Morgan Stevens I’m not sure ! My store is in BC Canada and we got our last audit last week and it’s supposed to be the last one ever. I’ve been told It’s because QUASA is costing the company too much money.
Current Starbucks employee and we are expecting a QUASA visit this week. Maybe Canada stores are switching to a different company for safety audits.
Your a very bright young person. Keep doing all that you do. I see a big future fir you!!
i work at a place similar to starbucks but its way smaller and the really nice thing is that all the stores are owned by people and they can basically do what they want with the shop as long as they follow certain roles and that makes working there super nice cuz it feels like you work at a independent shop but you still have the education and security that comes with a company
I started October 31st and honestly I'm starting to be iffy on staying I was working 4 days a week about 24-25 hours and needed help on getting info to get my rent adjusted and my SM showed me where my stubs are so there for he seen my pay now all of a sudden I'm scheduled for 2 days this week and 3 the next I work in a busy store and it's the holidays so I find it wierd why I'm not scheduled for anymore since extra help should be needed on top of that I feel like I'm in the way cause I don't know how to really do anything so most of the time I'm dropped off at drive thru greeting customers, scanning, and handing out items or front register my rent went from $300 somethin to $759 because I make $12 an hour and I'm in south Carolina so since we unionized we'll be makin $15 next year so it'll be even hire and 2 or 3 days isn't goin to work and now I'm just thinking about getting a $9 an hour job that's full time
im a barista for over a year already and I cant relate to this soooooo much
can*
Jazzy J i think she really means can't
just started, dude i was literally rushed through certification and she literally told us she wanted us to get through certification quickly just so she wouldn't look bad. she literally made the drinks for us for certification and passed us hella quick. we didn't even make frapps, just basic hot bar and basic teas. then on my first day the guidebook of how to make drinks isn't even available (gatekeeping much? did one of them steal the guidebook and keeps it to study on their own?) whenever i ask questions they get irritated its my first friggn day, plus the people who i am learning from are brand new also and they are screwing up all the drinks! i swear im just going to stand on oven until a manager shows up with the guidebook so i can actually make the drinks properly and not wing it with a bunch of impatient noobs who can't even help or notice me, who literally start making the drink I am halfway through and I end up having to throw my perfectly well made attempt away cus im apparently a ghost
I've never been treated like such trash by a job before.
i've just started at starbucks and i'm not sure if it's because i'm hired through another company (i work at the airport and all fast food/restaurants there are managed by a bigger company instead of the franchise) but our health and safety is disgusting, we don't have soap to wash our hands with and i have to empty bins and then i'm asked to go on bar without washing my hands. honestly makes me cringe, my coworkers think it's disgusting as well
That is gnarly lol
Ive been working at starbucks now for two years . it drove me to want to just go to the air force 🤦🏾♀️ 😂
