    Something important to note: Tom Kalinske was on the record as endorsing the 32x publicly, despite saying he initially thought the 32X was terrible as documented in the book "Console Wars". So, he either changed his mind or was just trying to support his own company's product publicly.
    *Games played in this video* : Nights into Dreams (0:01), Final Fantasy Tactics (0:16), Final Fantasy VII (0:33), Sonic & Knuckles (2:19), Revenge of Shinobi (4:34), Virtua Fighter 2 (10:50)

      @Rero Bird Fantastic video dude. The only thing I would like to add to the conversation is as awesome Tom Kolinske was, I think his biggest weakness was not understanding good game design. While they looked cool in magazines he is ultimately responsible for pushing the Fmv games on the Sega cd & some of the worst Sega games I ever played like Ghen War & Black Fire. Meanwhile Sega of Japan despite their flaws were master minds behind games like Virtual Fighter, Sega Rally, Daytona USA and even Sonic the hedgehog.

      Ring Fit Master I agree. I don't think he was any sort of video game genius. I mean, he barely even knew what a video game was when he first came to Sega. He was more so a master of branding, marketing and business.

      It should be noted that the book Console Wars was largely fabricated, as mentioned in the forward of it. The book Service Games (color edition preferred) is a DRASTICALLY better book. In the 20+ years in the game industry CW is probably the worst book I’ve read (Game Over & Masters of Doom are among the best)

      I just looked up Service Games and it looks like a book I'd love to read. Thank you for recommending it. Also, I found most of the information in CW to be confirmed by alternate sources. So, I'm curious to see how Service Games lines up with it. I think the trickiest thing with this kind of stuff is that the people involved can just say whatever they want now. Who knows how accurately they are retelling what actually happened. The author of CW got his information directly from most of the people described in his story. So, did they feed him little lies here and there? Perhaps.

    I lost it when you threw that 'naner at the fence with full audio. Interesting topic, I always thought that Sony + Sega would've been unstoppable - not that Sony turned out to be stoppable by themselves, but if they collaborated I always thought that us gamers would get the best of both worlds, a Saturn-PS1 hybrid with excellent 3d and 2d processing. Sega was always an arcade game company at heart and they would've insisted on getting powerful 2d games from the likes of SNK and Capcom into the home. It's funny they never quite could figure out how to do that successfully with their own 3D arcade games. great topic as always. Of course i'm a huuuge fan of 90s Sega and Sony so this would've been awesome for me. Nice Sega PSX controller btw, i've been meaning to get one, thanks for putting it back on my radar.

    The 2d thing was a huge concern. And if the RAM cart expansion didn't happen, well...
    As for Nintendo, Sony's deal would have given them full royalties and approval initiative over CD ROM software, making Nintendo a defacto 2nd party on its own hardware. Nintendo screwed up on not reading the fine print. Considering that the renegotiated deal (after Sony and Nintendo were forced to make nice) gave Nintendo the software royalties didn't keep Sony from going it alone in '94, Sony would have split from Nintendo to go at it alone sooner or later anyways.

    I'm not too sure if a Sega/Sony partnership would have worked out mainly for the same reasons it didn't work out with Nintendo. Sony is basically a behemoth of a company and by sharing their trade and incidentally their IP along with it. There is always a risk of the Sega or Nintendo as we knew them just getting absorbed into their corporate structure, hence would live on in name only.
    The one thing Sega and Nintendo had in common was that they were the only to dedicated video game companies. The only other brand to be able to make this claim was Atari. By comparison, Sony, Microsoft, NEC (TurboGraphx), Sharp, and Magnavox were all just electronics manufacturers who also made video game consoles.
    Not all of these devices were bad, but something they lacked was identity. They had no Mario or Sonic to help sell the system. Even to this day, Sony has no definable mascot and Microsoft Bob isn't selling too many X-Boxes. Somehow, I feel that this aspect of Nintendo or Sega would have died if they had partnered with Sony.

  • @ShinSynZero
    @ShinSynZero 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Interesting vid and I had been wondering about about that controller. As a Sega fan, I remember all of the cool things Tom Kalinske did and I'm led to believe a Sega/Sony collab console could have been very good. Especially if the character of Sega games was still present and they had input on some of the hardware decisions (better 2D capabilities).

  • @RicardoRandom691
    @RicardoRandom691 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thank you for the Tom Kalinske appreciation! I've been a fan of his since the 90s. If Sega of Japan had listened to him, Sega would have entered the 2000s in a MUCH stronger position, even without a Sony partnership. Even if all they did was just a better-handled Saturn launch in the US, it would have improved Sega's position massively.
    Looking into the hypothetical future, a Sega/Sony joint would have ended up with Sony taking over either way, I think:
    At some point, one of the two partners might have felt they weren't getting the proper share of credit/profits and decided to go it alone again. My money's on Sega of Japan pulling out of the partnership first. Hell hath no fury like a Nakayama scorned. In this timeline, the console wars end the same way, with Sega launching the Dreamcast and losing to the now Sony-only PS2.
    But even if the partnership had survived, Sony might have ended up acquiring Sega outright, turning them into Sony's premier in-house studio. It seems like the natural course of action, with Sony producing the hardware and Sega supplying their game design expertise. The console might still have born the Sega branding, but the hardware would be designed by Sony. I could be quite happy with this option. Sega's genius is in their games, as much as I love their consoles.

    I think most people misinterpret the Saturn hardware as a 2D powerhouse that ultimately added some more power due to the upcoming Playstation, adding more 3D capabilities, etc.
    But that doesn't seem to make any sense, the industry was overloaded by 2D games and SEGA was in the cutting edge since the 80's, they made "3D" games like Hang-On, Outrun, Thunderblade and others, while Namco released polygonal arcade games before the 90's, other companies did something similar too.
    Everybody in the industry knew 3D was the next thing and there's no reason why SEGA would want to make a super 2D console in the mid 90's, SEGA even feared underdogs like the Jaguar and 3DO, both consoles released in 1993, with lots of polygonal games, people don't realize that these American consoles were reasons why the Saturn was rushed to the market, being the upcoming Playstation another menace to SEGA. They really feared not being the first one to release the most powerful home console like they did with the Genesis/Mega Drive, and thought that being the first in 1988/1989 was the main reason why this console hit the top, it was to some extent, but rushing the Saturn isn't different than rushing the Mega Drive in Japan, with 2 mediocre games, Super Thunder Blade and Space Harrier II, and notice that both games simulate 3D gameplay, in the late 80's. What made the Genesis so successful, apart of having only a few good games 2 years after launch, is the SEGA was really the king of the arcades and could back the console up until it hit the jackpot, third parties and themselves releasing hit after hit, the same didn't happen with the Saturn, they dropped it after basically 2 years, and it still managed to get great games in the process.
    The hardware is indeed not much elegant and hard to program for, but at that time, there was no standard, the 90's ate experimentation for breakfast, but the Saturn was indeed designed to be a 3D gaming console and there are titles that you can hardly think the Playstation could pull off, Shining Force III, specially scenarios 2 and mainly 3 are 3D games that load complex 3D scenes and effects that would be somewhat possible in the PS, but the loadings would be atrocious. Burning Rangers is really complex, dynamic lighting, particles and other cool effects, transparency, etc.
    The PS also pulled great looking games, specially after 1998, which is the same time the Saturn was dead, so developers learned how to handle the hardware for both consoles, and we can only imagine what the Saturn could do until 2000, Shenmue would be cool to see released. The major PS1 downside was the tiny amount of RAM, if Sony kept the I/O port and released some sort of RAM expansion, than it would have arcade conversions like the Saturn did, the PS has even more 2D sprite based games than the Saturn, and a lot being exclusive to it.
    In the end, I feel both consoles complement each other, if you were lucky to have both back then, you had the best games to play. The Genesis was the only console I feel SEGA managed to get all the juice it had to give, unfortunately all their other consoles were handcapped for one reason or another, but ultimately, SEGA was their own enemies, making the wrong choices at the wrong time.
    Guess what, they released the Game Gear Micro recently, I guess everyone wanted one, right?

      Oof! You made a lot of great points. Yu Suzuki has stated that he always wanted to make games 3D, and you just have to look at the titles he made as they bare witness from the start, from Hang On, Space Harrier, After Burner and Outrun, to Virtua Racing, Virtua Fighter, Daytona USA to Ferrari 355 Challenge, Shenmue and Outrun 2, with many others in between.
      Sega themselves had Turbo, Buck Rogers: Planet of Zoom and even Zaxxon in the early days trying to make 3D games.
      About the Saturn, it was only in the west that they stopped in 98, In Japan Sega was still supporting the console until 2000 or so when they pulled out of the hardware market completely.

    • @roberto1519
      @roberto1519 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely, even in early 80's they wanted to make their games to have more depth, simulating 3D environments, like those games you mentioned above. It's true the Saturn was supported a few years more in Japan, as was the Dreamcast, but no big titles were released after their demise in the US, aborting the Saturn there and ejaculating the Dreamcast was another bad move, the 128 console could barely put up a fight against the now PS1 juggernaut, the Dreamcast suffered from competing against the last gen, lots of PS1 and PC ports, rarely with enhancements to make costumers care enough. Have you checked Dino Crisis and other PS1 games on the Dreamcast? It made the SEGA console look a stop-gap for the true 128 bit consoles that were sure to come soon. Sure we had Sonic Adventure (which I now consider totally passable, but great for the day), Shenmue and Soul Calibur. But the millions that had the PS1 with the best RPGs, racing, 3D fighting games and many more just had to wait for the upcoming PS2, which also had backwards compatibility with the PS1 and could even play DVDs which was HUGE at the time.
      SEGA always kept backwards compatibility up until the Mega Drive, Mark III/Master System could play SG-1000/2000 games and the MD/Gen could play all SMS games, where's the compatibility for the 16-bit console on the Saturn? It had a variant of the 68000CPU inside and a cartridge slot that could easily use an adapter for Mega Drive games like the Power Base for SMS, where's the backwards compatibility for the Saturn on the Dreamcast so they could at least respect their costumers and we could still enjoy last and current gen software?
      We needed at least 10 Tom Kalinske clones around the world to save SEGA from themselves.

    • @lazarushernandez5827
      @lazarushernandez5827 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@roberto1519 Agreed. The Saturn should have either been natively backwards compatible with the Genesis, or had an adapter. A lot of families back then had to make the decision of trading in the existing console games and hardware to just go through it all over again with the new one, and we know the old consoles never got that much money on trade in. Many wouldn't even bother and hand down the old console to a cousin, nephew etc..
      The adapter (although costing you money) was a small incentive in that you could still use the older library with the newer console.
      Funny how backwards compatibility was taken more serious after that (it was easier to implement considering the move to disc media, and advent of digital storage).

    • @roberto1519
      @roberto1519 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@lazarushernandez5827 True, if you're a big company, you need to consider your user base, SEGA basically hadn't any before the MD/GEN and always considered making older consoles compatible with the new one, the Saturn had it all for it to happen, even a cartridge slot, if they had 20~ millions of Genesis owners in the US alone, you're incentivizing them to acquire your new console. Sony made PS1 titles available for PS2, PS3, PSP, PS4 and probably PS5, Nintendo only made it similar to SEGA with their Game Boys, which were great ideas and kept their costumers happy, and like you said, back then, we had to count our beans to even think of jumping to a new console.

    Sega made the bad decision to make Sega Saturn harder to program when multi-processor programming wasn't the norm yet, tools and techniques not developed for it. Clearly Saturn's design was a hiccup from the 32x design where they try to mix 2D sprite tech with 3D tech, as opposed to stand alone 3D tech like Playstation, though the Nintendo 64 did employ 2D and 3D mix where the "2D sprites" were rendered as 3D models.

      Playstation did the same as the N64 in that regard, any games that used sprites were done as textured (flat) polygons.
      The Saturn was in development before the 32X though, since 1992. The 32X was both conceived and released in 94.

    I also prefer that we have two separate consoles instead of Sega and Sony merging. As you stated; I doubt that the system would have done 2D games anywhere nearly as good and we probably wouldn't have gotten the 2D gems we did have. Only if the 2D was as good as the Saturn and the 3D been as good as the PlayStation (combining both libraries of games into one console); that would have been a perfect scenario. But knowing Sony; they would have forced their agenda harder (which is why the industry now is more focused on super realistic games instead of fun 2D games). I often wonder what the industry would have looked like today; if Sega won that generation instead of Sony.

    Great Discussion RetroBird. What about this. What if we had the Nintendo Playsation 16bit with a cdrom addon. Now consider the 32bit Saturn, a new all powerful console with built in CD-Rom. Everyones loving the Saturn and leaving the 16Bit era behind. The saturns RRP is only 249 Pounds. I think Sega would still have brought out the Dreamcast and to this day would still be a strong contender in the hardware console market. Perhaps Microsoft wouldnt have considered entering the market, and the gamecube never made it past concept design..... Just a thought.

    • @lazarushernandez5827
      @lazarushernandez5827 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think in your scenario, the Dreamcast could likely have been delayed a bit; with a successful Saturn there wouldn't be a need to replace it a mere 4-5 years in. This in turn would've have allowed the DC to have a DVD drive, which would have improved its desirability, along with newer(than 1997-98) technology cpu/gpu wise.
      Of course if Sony and Nintendo are partnered, there might have been a different machine in the race (from either the N64, the Playstation, Playstation 2 or GameCube). This would be a Nintendo/Sony hybrid, it would undoubtedly use either CD or DVD, so imagine titles like Mario 64, with the storage of disc media for audio, textures, etc.

    I'm glad things turned out the way they did. The Sega America/Japan dichotomy was so toxic, they would've found a way to ruin it anyway. And the PSX is so special to me that whatever the course it took to get here is exactly the right course, IMO.
    The Dreamcast is just a darling little console, too, and had there been a Sony/Sega partnership, that crown jewel might never have happened. Maybe we missed out on the coolest joint system ever, but since we don't know anything about it, I don't really feel any regret. Nah, I suspect it would've been a dumpster fire.

    I wouldn't want to see Sega and Sony merging, because it may have meant that Final Fantasy VII would have ended up on the N64 DD, instead of being built for the CD-ROM PS1 (which afforded the developers a lot of space to change the way RPGs could be made).
