Alternative timeline, Sega never left the console market, however, there would be a huge internal restructuring and efforts to correct past mistakes. Before I start, though, let me just say this is just my interpretation and pipe dream. I know Sega would never return to the console market.
Like Nintendo, Sega would begin to shift their focus and carve out their own piece of the market. If Sega did survive I could see them taking inspiration from Nintendo. Instead of focusing on power and graphics, they would let their games talk. In this timeline, with the restructuring, and Sega of America and Japan and Europe working together, they would be able to churn out some high quality games because the effort and working together would be there to establish those merits.
Sega could market their console as a JRPG hub and port some arcade titles, while also developing some AA or AAA games that appeal to everyone. My only obstacle is third party support because specs wise, I can’t see Sega trying to compete with Microsoft or Sony in that frontier because it’d be too risky. So they would, in my timeline, release a console that goes up to 1080/1440p, and between 30 and 60 fps. Similar to what Nintendo has done. Historically, Capcom might support the new Sega console because of the Dreamcast and Saturn, and I’m sure Ubisoft will port over some of their older games from 2018 and prior. The reason why I chose 1080p and 1440p is because not everyone is interested in 4K and with casuals, and hardcore Sega fans, what matters the most is gameplay and if it’s fun and engaging. Of course the games will look gorgeous and run smoothly, but that won’t be the main emphasis.
You made a good point about not making a handheld, but I realized that it would be a good way to keep costs down and not sell at a loss. I think Nintendo is the only company that is able to make some profit with their console sales, with how they’re manufactured and the parts used, so it’s not sold at a loss. I mentioned earlier that Sega has a ton of JRPGs under their belt and arcade-like franchises. I had a discussion with some others recently about the best approach Sega could have if they never left the industry, and it all fell down on their original game gear. That would be what Sega is aiming to do. As casual gamers are growing and portable gaming is becoming more appealing, Sega will release a Switch like hybrid. The dock instead will be a charging pad that moves the signal to the television so you can play like a console or like a handheld.
If Sega never left, what games could sell their console? They actually have a diverse and amazing catalog of franchises and untapped IPs that can deliver. These are just a few that come to mind: Sonic, Atlus games (Persona, Shin Megami Tensei), Phantasy Star, Nights Into Dreams, Jet Grind Radio, Skies of Arcadia, Panzer Dragoon, Bayonetta, Shining, Super Monkey Ball, Grandia, Valkyria Chronicles, Yakuza, Shinobi and Power Stone.
Like I said, this is just my interpretation of Sega never leaving and pipe dream. You’re right about keeping exclusives locked to their console. These are just some ideas that come to mind for exclusives.
    *Jet Grind Radio 3
*Nights Dream On (third game in the series)
    *Sonic Adventure 3
    *Grandia IV
    *Skies of Arcadia Maroon
    *Shinobi Blood Oath
    *Panzer Dragoon IV
*Condemned to Eternity (soft reboot, a horror franchise)
    *Super Monkey Ball Banana Mana
    *Phantasy Star Online (immediately ported)
But these are just wishful thinking and unrealistic. If Sega were ever to return back, I would instantly buy their system.

I think the only way Sega could still be making consoles today is if they didn't mess up so much on the Saturn. Had the Saturn actually had a sonic game and didn't have such complex hardware, it could have been a huge success. Also I can see Sega releasing there Dreamcast successor as early as 2003 in order to have a leg up on the competition.

    • @TheDayd111returns
      @TheDayd111returns ปีที่แล้ว +3

That’s true. There should have been at least 3 main Sonic titles for the Saturn. Only if Adventure was released for the Saturn instead of the Dreamcast. It could have saved the console.

I might be a little late. But with your history I could explain a alternate history if Sega was still around ( with more information ).
    1989-1996.
    SEGA GENESIS
Sega would soon release the Sega Genesis as a rival competitor to the upcoming Super Famicom and SNES in the Japanese and North American Markets. A successful advertising campaign was launched in America by Sega of America promoting the Genesis for its high speeds and what it ‘Does’.
In this alternate reality. The Sega Genesis would continue sales up till 1997-2000.
The estimate of this would be between 35-50 million copies of the console.
    32X
After a few NOT-successful add-ons to there Genesis. In 1994 came a powerful beast. The 32X which was sold at 199USD. Soon exploding in sales but not for long. In the same year the PlayStation was released and seriously damaged there sales. And so the drawing board was brought up again.
    SEGA SATURN
Soon on launch day in 1995. Sega’s first 3D console ( if you don’t include the 32X add on ) Was a instant success again. Sonic Games were astonishing said by reviewers and the advertisers knew what they were doing! Promoting their graphics and such what.
The production of the Saturn continue till 2005. Estimate sales were 45 million. Outselling the N64
Soon Sega walking off with everybody’s money after the success of the Sega Saturn but a new Hardware was shown in front. They saw a great chance and purchased it for there next console.
    1997-2004
    SEGA DREAMCAST
With this new hardware. Sega would immediately get to work and less then a year later the new hardware was shown on the newest console. The Dreamcast, Everybody began the purchase moment of Sonic Adventure in 1998 and Sonic Adventure 2 in 2000. Even if the Dreamcast sales were dented by the PS2. It beat out sales of the GameCube.
Production of the Dreamcast ends in 2008. Sale estimated to be 40-50 million.
( btw for the next generations I’ll use names I thought of. )
    SEGA ELECTRIC
The Dreamcast’s sales began to dry up as the console was on the market for 6 years now, and so Sega began the production of the Electric. With backwards capability so you could play the original Sonic on a high gen console.
The Sega electric hit shelf’s in 2004. A full year before the PS3 and Wii. The console was praised for its classics like Halo ( Microsoft’s muticonsole series. ) Estimates for sales of the Electric is 50-60 million. And ended production in 2011.
    2012-2019
    SEGA DREAMSCAPE.
To compete with the upcoming PS4 and Wii. Sega would launch a more ‘Modern’ version of the Sega Dreamcast. Marketed as a proper sequel to the iconic console.
It hit shelf’s in 2013 just before the PS4.
It is still being produced. Estimated sales is up above 80+ million.
SEGA GENESIS, SATURN AND DREAMCAST CLASSIC.
With the NES classic and SNES Classic releasing around the time. Sega launches there version alongside the Saturn and Dreamcast.
    2019-PRESENT.
    SEGA ORIGIN.
Sega would start production of there latest console. The origin which is a homage to the original consoles up to the Electric. While having outstanding graphics and another set of games.
It’s estimated sales is to be 50+ million.
    And is still in production.

I don't think Halo would have even become that big if Microsoft had made it a PC only franchise.
Console shooters before it had the big issue of being really hard to play to absolutely unplayable. Because it was the first big functional shooter on consoles.
On PC it would have had way more devastating early competition. I don't think Halo CE would have been that big of a success on a market where it had to directly compete with the best versions of Doom, Quake, Counter Strike, Half-Life and even Unreal.

  • @mattwolf7698

I'm not 100% sure the Dreamcast could have stuck around until 2006/2007, it was already pretty dated even when the PS2 came out and with it's disc only being able to hold 1 GB of data (which was even less than the Gamecube) I'd think Sega would have had to have released a new console in 2004 to stay relevant which would be interesting, If it was powerful enough to keep up with the PS3 (the 360 probably wouldn't exist in this timeline and the Wii probably would have still existed and still been underpowered) maybe the Dreamcast 2 could stick around through the PS3's lifespan and then maybe Sega and Sony would start putting out consoles the same year after that.

I actually had a dream where I was in this exact senario. Heres a rundown.
Me and my friends were at somekind of stadium or something that looks like E3 or something which is weird because I dont live in the US. We were making fun of the whole PS3 500 USD thing on our way. It was very early in the morning around 5 or 6 and we were marching into the presentation hall. At first it was dark with nothing but the the big screen flashes the bright SEGA logo on to us. The crowd eruppts, cringy kids were yelling SONIC!!! while hardcore fans were yelling some other stuff I cant remember. Soon A spokeperson came out who I cant remember who was he but he was famous in SEGA history. He came out and announce the new sega console for the 7th generation. The SEGA Alpha. It was a disc based console that was made with the collaboration with Microsoft and Toshiba. Microsoft was incharge of SEGA net while Toshiba put in a HD DVD drive. SEGA showed of the SEGA Alpha to the crowd and we were all excited. The SEGA Alpha looked like a bigger Dreamcast but it stood up sideways like the Xbox 360 and the controller looked like a combination of the following( a wii mote, joy cons, glowsticks and psmove) basically the controllers were two glowsticks. Both of them have the same button layout as the xbox 360 with the left stick having the left side of the 360 while the right side having the right side of the 360. SEGA announced the games with the first one being a game called Sonic Adventure 3 (which suspeciously looks like sonic06) and they also announce some newer ips which I cant remember their names. They did announce some games that are maing a return like space channel 5, vector man, burning rangers, crazy taxi and more. They also annouce some japanese games for the SEGA Alpha like sakura ways, hatsune miku, yakuza and more. The price tag was like 450 usd or something. They said there will be a VR headset add on and the ability to watch HD DVD. That is as much as I can remember. I know. A real fever dream.

I mostly agree with everything you've said in the video. One thing I see being different though is that, despite Microsoft not having a space in the game console market, I don't think they wouldn't have a presence in game console manufacturing. I think that, if the Dreamcast suceeded, Microsoft and Sega's partnership would develop even further since they provided the software used in the Dreamcast, which runs a modified version of Windows. I think, in a way, Microsoft would still have some form of the Xbox under a Sega console, negating any reason for them to enter the console market to begin with

  • @FlyingDuckMan360
    @FlyingDuckMan360 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

As usual, I blame Sony and Microsoft with their Playstation and Xbox consoles for why Sega left the console wars, since both consoles rely way too heavily on third-party support. Sega and Nintendo have the decency to make their own games. I also dislike Sony because the button scheme of their Playstation consoles is different from every other major console on the market, and Microsoft for acquiring Rareware, resulting in the cancellation of Banjo-Threeie, Conker's Other Bad Day, and Donkey Kong Racing. I'm not going to deny that Sega made a lot of questionable decisions (especially during the Saturn era, namely the cancellation of Sonic X-treme), but I kind of feel it was because they were rushed in trying to stay ahead of both Sony and Nintendo.

I've always loved Sonic much more than I did Mario. I think everything he said in this video are about right. With the modern technology that we have today, I think that SEGA could've made consoles that would compete with PlayStation. They could make some powerful consoles that would run games like mortal kombat and street fighter.

    • @VOAN
      @VOAN 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The problem is not if they could make those powerful consoles, the problem is could they make money from selling those consoles. Sega doesn't had a technology issue, they had a trust and money issue and that's what got them in hot water to begin with. They spend a lot of money advertising the Sega CD and Sega 32X but made no money in return from those, same with the Saturn and Dreamcast. Sega also doesn't had many great exclusive games that would help sell their consoles, sure there's Sonic but what else does Sega had? Ristar is not a million seller, Vectorman is not a million seller, Shining Force and Phantasy Star aren't million sellers, Virtua Fighter is not a million seller, certainly not Shenmue and Skies of Arcadia. Don't get me wrong a lot of those are good games but they don't help Sega made the bucks they need to survive and compete. Sega need a ton of trump cards other than Sonic and they just couldn't make many.

though something else id like to comment on is that seganet was not as much like xbox-live,it was more of a game oriented ISP.
and id imagine sega being a bit more imaginative, but id agree that overall the indusry wouldnt be too different (as far as consoles are concerned),PC would be better or worse (depending on how microsoft cope with steam or if it exists at all)
and id imagine valve would make (or at least try to,DXVK was only around in 2017ish,and theres the butterfly effect) proton (what makes windows games run on linux) earlier (cause the main reason valve gives linux so much love is that they have always been worried about microsoft becoming like apple and trying to destroy steam ever since they made the windows store),which could have large effects on the steam machine (cause it may be able to play alot more games) and linux support. (i know linux and the steam machine are not very impactful, but the steam machine basically made the steam controller and linux gaming, two major things in my personal day to day gaming experience)
one asterisk i must add is that maybe paid online wouldnt exist (as i said seganet =/= xboxlive)

Microsoft actually lost over $13 billion off the Xbox alone that generation since they were losing over $230 off of each unit being sold selling it at the PS2's price point to compete with them. When that was failing, they opted instead to compete with Nintendo sales wise since Nintendo was in 2nd place for more than 3 years. It wouldn't be until Microsoft dropped the price of said system even more by $170 that they were able to just BARELY beat out Nintendo. But it came with a very heavy cost to Microsoft in the long run! Nintendo did however when win when it came to the software to hardware attachment rate for their hardware compared to its competition.

Good video, but i think it misses out on the crucial detail about the co-operation between SEGA and Microsoft.
Microsoft had a hand in the development of the Dreamcast too, and many games literally used the Windows CE as a framework on the Sega Dreamcast, using the DirectX framework, etc.
So, if Sega never left the console market, Halo could have been a flagship product on the Sega Dreamcast then.

Right and bungie at that time never had a publisher for Halo and changed the original design of the game from what we know today which meant the publisher would have been more likely SEGA of america. Which of course Halo would have become a SEGA franchise if it had become a hit on DC.

I believe Microsoft and Sega would have formed a partnership one way or another, and Halo would have been a Sega exclusive.
The hopes in all this that digital wouldn't be currently killing the industry as Microsoft is a leader in that push slowly following in their footsteps in Sony, and Nintendo is being forced into it because of how well the corporate elite has brainwashed people out of ownership and to believe quality is better than quality.

    Shadow the hedgehog
    Sonic 06
    Sonic lost world
    Sonic boom trilogy

Now here are the new games that could have existed:
Sonic adventure 3 (replacing sonic 06)
Sonic extreme(2005 canceled sonic game in are timeline)
Sonic adventure 1 and 2 remakes
Games that would have had gameplay changes: sonic unleashed (daytime stages with adventure gameplay)
Sonic colors(adventure gameplay and there is no boost wisp)(both games not having boost gameplay because sonic rush inspired the gameplay for those 2 games
this timeline Where Sega never became a 3rd party developer sonic unleashed and sonic colors would be the last games because Sega didn’t make that much mainline games in the early and mid 90’s

With systems past Genesis they focused on one type of game too much which keeps you from true success like the vast and varied libraries of PS2/Wii. With Saturn it was fighters.... with Dreamcast it was arcade style games while missing big arcade titles(Daytona 2/Scud Race).... and with Dreamcast 2 it would have been focusing too much on Sonic games like they have been for last 20+ years.

I think Sega would of destroyed the Wii U and Switch imo, I think its obvious Wii U failed because the advertising was garbage and was lacking it. The Switch because the hardware and software wasn't cutting it, hardware issues like joycon drift and the batteries puffing up in the Switch would give them a huge disadvantage and also the Switch is only slightly as powerful as the PS3 and Xbox 360 which isn't a good move at all if they wanted to compete with the newer generation consoles at the time. And the Switch Oled is just a higher quality version of the PSP Vita.

All the consoles and some games were great, and even if a critic saw the TINIEST BUG, they'd go full Angry Video Game Nerd saying "You're a poopy head" and just start cancelling Sega on twitter. Personally, I don't see it as a huge deal if people mispronounce it. From a technical standpoint, Sega is pronounced 'se' as in seven, and 'ga' as in gawk. The only reason why you hear 'say gah' from their startup sound, and such, is because they drag it out to be like a song; So, in Japanese, when you drag out the 'Eh' it becomes an 'ay' sound (likewise 'ga' becomes 'gaah'.) Either way, Sega is just an abbreviation for "Service Games," so it really doesn't matter.
