They definitely stretched the brief to build so many vehicles on a common architecture, but these days that’s not too uncommon. I mean look at VW’s MQB stuff, there are dozens of models built upon that.
I think Toyota might have missed the boat on the square shaped offroad market. Affordability is becoming a problem without the weird pandemic fever driving demand. Hopefully they don't overproduce the land cruiser.
As much as I respect Toyota for making more models for more people, especially as more and more companies are paring back their lineups, I don't quite get the point of the Land Cruiser in the US. When it was full sized, it was mechanically a direct competitor with the Sequoia, and now that it's a mid-size (Prado), it's mechanically a direct competitor with the 4Runner. Obviously the trim levels and equipment separate them, but why not have the high and low trims on the same vehicle, rather than put in roughly two times the development and tooling costs to produce two different vehicles that do the same thing?
You are right the overlapping is crazy the only reason the Land Cruiser Prado was brought to North America where it will compete with high end 4Runner and low end GX is to give customers more choice. There is no other reason. They are all superb products that do pretty much the same thing, are underneath pretty much the same vehicle but each one has its charm and styling and I love every one of them. Instaid of complaining lets applaud Toyota for bringing their LC Prado to North America
@@lav1daloca no it doesn’t at all. There’s way too much size, feature, and powertrain overlap. Almost nothing distinguishes the new Highlander from the new 4Runner from the new Land Cruiser from the new Sequoia from the new Lexus GX in the US market
The only problem i see with this is the increase in size of the Prado and 4Runner as well as GX. In my opinion the 4Runner and Prado/GX have departed the mid-size market and are now full size SUVs! Can someone tell me these are still mid-size SUVs?
Actually, the 4runner is still a true midsize SUV (even though it is an inch longer in length and same width). The GX/Prado is almost as tall as the sequoia and LX (although for some reason the overseas 300 series that the LX is based on is the tallest toyota full size SUV unless they are counting lifts and whatnot). The new Grand Highlander and TX are also almost full size in dimensions, but the height makes them midsized.
The reality is greater than these 5 - there’s the 300 series, the LX & GX from Lexus and possibly the HiLux and Fortuner on the same platform as well.
I'm pretty sure the next gen HiLux and Fortuner will be the same Tacoma and 4Runner for these markets with different badging styling.

Even better example would be the Nissan Titan, Frontier, Navara, and all their associated SUVs. All built on the F-Alpha platform.

Yeah their SUV lineup in the US doesn't make much sense at all, Doug Demuro has talked a lot about this recently
