Many automotive engineers are saying Toyota made a big mistake going to a 4 cylinder engine. Time will tell but it will take about 5 years before we know if they fall apart.
@@AR_119 Here in Vegas they do markups whenever the rest of the car brands are doing them, so I'd love to find one that doesn't. I've been thinking of making the move from Jeep to a 4r or LC, but my Jeep is still low miles so I have some time to vet the new offerings and maybe wait out the hype markup.
@@AR_119All the dealers I see have huge mark ups. That’s why I didn’t buy a fifth gen. So glad I waited. I refuse to pay over sticker. They just won’t get my money.
I actually think demand will slip. People can’t afford a $60K SUV and they didn’t improve on the issues most of us wanted and took away features most of us liked. I’ll be hanging on to mine and when the time comes I’ll probably just trade it for another lower mileage 5th gen.
Lol living in a second world country where it's your own fault you let the dealership mafia gain enough power that they're allowed to markup vehicles above RRP
Doug - The power and performance of the drivetrain are NOT the issue with any of Toyota's new lineup. Its the lack of simplicity and question of reliability. Enthusiasts want to be able to fix their car on the side of the road, not be forced to go to a dealer. I get offering these i4/hybrid drivetrains, but not even having the option of a NA V6 (or V8 in the Tundra) is the difference between multiple people I know choosing American despite being big Toyota fans.
I don’t care what it looks like if it is reliable. My 1997 4Runnner which I bought new has been the most reliable car I have ever owned. The car is still my daily driver.
@Brian_Eugene_Leeit is made in Japan thankfully finally make enough to get a 5 runner cash might just save a little more for a brand new 2025 compared To a used
It’s not bad but the 5th Gen is still looking great, and it’s been tested overtime. The 5th Gen Premium is all you need like the SR5. This new gen seems to have a lot more plastic and it remains to be seen if it will have electric problems . But good to know you got a review on actual video
I have a 2001 Toyota 4Runner which I purchased brand new. I love the car and it has treated me very well. After watching this video and seeing the changes to the engine, I am going to keep mine another ten years.
I don't mind screens, so long as main and important functions aren't integrated into them. Like in new BMW's, where to change the distance you're following the car in front of you, you have to go into a separate menu. That's not just dumb but it's also dangerous.
Same here. I've been looking at the new Lexus GX but now seeing the new 4Runner, I'm convinced that I will always be a 4Runner guy. This is still true to its blood.
I just got back to TH-cam and noticed this at 11 pm And was thinking either one of two reasons why Doug uploaded so late: -one, because he was bored and had nothing to do all night. -two, he accidentally uploaded tomorrow’s video 😂
Doug, the type of guy to skip over the fact you get a, 2,400 WATT!!! Outlet on the back of the front console. Enough to power a microwave or smaller ac unit
I appreciate how thorough you are with all the little details. It's actually kind of rare to find a car review that includes all of that but I always wish people would.
Can't wait to see the $70k+ price tag. Soccer moms and bro beards will love the offroad suspension in the grocery store parking lots. They'll look lovely parked in the nail salon parking lot next to the wilderness subarus. Overlanding to the microbrewer is life!
You ever see Corvette, McLaren, Lambo and 500+ HP car owners racing them on the tracks ? Nope. Who cares what people buy, none of these vehicles are practicle if you are justifying suspension, HP or price lol.
You can say that about literally ANY SUV or truck. They all have a substantial portion of their owners who don’t really need a truck or SUV for how they use it. If anything, I see more people using 4Runners for what they’re intended for, than most SUVs. I see them everywhere when I go camping, hiking, etc. Just my anecdotal observations.
Doug, I sometimes am critical of your videos. But…when you do your honest and in depth reviews I always react the same way, he does the best all around reviews. So thanks for being true to your strengths. And I’m with you, those camouflage seats should be options, they may be a deal breaker for some…
You made an excellent point about where Toyota is heading. They have four line ups with nearly identical pricing and features with the same badge and different model names. I can’t wait to hear my local dealership try to sell me all four cars 🤣🤣🤣
Thats how Toyota works in almost every region except the US. In South America, the Prado and the 4runner have always been available and they both sell pretty well. It wont be an issue for them
I love the 85 4Runner with the convertible top but the LC was the original roofless yota. Maybe down the line they'll make the new LC with removable top, maybe even two door to complete with jeep and ferd. That body style suits it way better than the runner.
@purwantiallan5089 I think Toyota is going through a challenging transitional phase. Not necessarily "down hill" but I feel they are starting to experience GM-style product line-up cannibalism.
Don’t worry bud this will not make it more than 50k with out issues just like the new tundras and Tacomas. You can say it will be the most overpriced turbo junk suv ever made 😂
@@Nick-mb7ymDo you find yourself frequently breaking sunroofs? Glass isn’t structural on an automobile (and least I can’t think of any instance that it would be structural offhand).
I like how you can see in the interior shots it's just curved on the outside. The interior window still is "normal" so it's like the back glass on my Jeep Renegade. Looks like you can see for miles only to actually have this tiny little slot.
Huge screen is hideous! It will look like crap after a few scratches and will cost a fortune to replace when it fails right after the warranty expires. Let's not forget the hybrid turbo 4 banger that won't last as long as NA engine and the rear cargo area you lose with the battery under the cargo area floor.
That’s because the Japanese know how Americans are a bit slow and can’t see very well and they need all the help they can get with those obnoxiously huge screens and huge knobs. 🤪😆
I have a '17 Tacoma 2WD. Here in 5 or so years am looking forward to getting a landcruiser or a 4runner, I think the cargo area may be the factor. We love to go camping, and having a covered area for gear will be so nice (hate throwing the tarp over every trip, then packing it all back up to strap it down). The 4wd will be nice for some of those off-road camping situations where I've had to get creative on my routes.
Looks amazing, but a 4 cylinder turbo is a dealbreaker for me. I understand this is driven by regulations, but of all Toyota models you’d think they’d do anything to retain the proven reliability of an NA V6 in their off-roader
One of my favorite things about the 5th Gen is that the engine still sounds like an old school truck. This new engine sound leaf blower on steroids-ish to me at least in the videos I’ve watched
It makes more power and tows 1000 pounds more. That tells you it’s better. Plus the new transmission is a massive improvement. Turbos are such simple technology. Should last 500k easy. Toyota tortured these things to test for longevity. They said it’s a massive improvement.
Just took delivery of my 2023 TRD OR. So far I love it. It’s got no sunroof, no heated seats, but all the trail stuff for wheeling. Can’t wait to test it all out. Had two Third Gen’s so decided to treat myself

I'm glad they went with a 4 cylinder as it just make my V6 model worth a lot more $$$$. Nobody that's a true 4Runner fan wants a 4 Cylinder. People want the extreme reliability of the Toyota naturally aspirated V6 which easily makes 300K+ on the odometer with proper maintenance. 2024 and older models are going to be going way up in price

So yes... I have saved thousands of dollars over the years by not buying insurance or cases. I've never broke a phone either. So yeah, I'm right, you're wrong

There needs to be a national standard on how big infotainment screens can be. Soon people will be driving around with 65” inch screens in the their cars 😂
Touch screens need to be banned altogether because they're a huge distraction and can cause the vehicle to be undrivable. Ac buttons, radio buttons and headlight controls need to be mandated by DOT to have a manual button or lever or knob.
@eggsinsideme @eggsinsideme that is the biggest bs I've ever heard. As a Toyota fan boy with A LOT of heavy knowledge of Toyotas history and engineering, I can laugh at your forum bs knowledge. @@ryanb8736 I suspect not... These new trucks will take a while to hit dealers. Dealers will mark them up keeping them above even the asking price of even top tier 5th gen vehicles. Don't know why manufacturers abandoned the roll down rear window when it is so incredibly useful for long items like lumber and surfboards, as well as dogs. It seems all American station wagons from the 70s and 80s had roll down rear windows.
Because they want you to buy a full size truck to haul every day items. It's the same with removing the bench seat in the front.... so you have to buy a 3 row suv.
As a Jeep Wrangler owner, I really love how much competition and options are entering the space. The Wrangler JL, Bronco, and now this 4Runner are really pushing the offroad DDs to the next level.
The only problem is that the Jeep is the worst of all of those options sadly. The TJ is the last jeep that I could actually trust to get to 150k miles without any nonsense.
Looks like a 4TH gen and 5th gen had a mutated baby imagine making the vehicle 4.7 inches longer, with a 2.7 inch longer wheelbase with worse approach / departure angles and having a backseat smaller than a RAV4 🌈
In 2022 I saw a 4runner 1995 and in my mind I wish the next generation (4runner 2025 6th Gen) had that same design but renewed and today it is made a reality! Toyota knows what their followers and customers wants.

I just hate how every new cars infotainment system is just a TV screen stuck on the dash like an after thought. Older infotainment systems built into the dash were so much better..
Agreed, it's incredibly lazy and does not look good at all. I think at first companies started doing this so they could offer different screen sizes without completely redesigning the dash, but that practice seems to have fallen off in recent years so there's absolutely no excuse for not integrating the better.
I've never been a fan of SUVs or trucks but damn does the new 4Runner look good. Toyota finally got their design team right--most of the new redesigns look great. Especially the Lexus GX
Love the new 4Runner ! Im sure the new 4 Cylinder engines are going to be good, but man I would love to put in a 3UZ-FE V8 into one of these for the ultimate combo! Modern on the outside but with a super reliable V8 power train! Hmmm..
@brandoncook67, In all honesty the 5th Gen is overrated. This 6th Gen is by far a more attractive vehicle in every conceivable aspect. Firstly, it's faster and much more fuel efficient. The 5th Gen had a Poor gas mileage of 15mpg combined and it was slow.
The backseat bench should be on a slider so it can slide back, making a lot more legroom for situations where you need to haul people not cargo. Give the user the option to trade trunk space for legroom.

I've got a 2023 4 Runner and a new Sequoia. Love them both in their own ways. But something tells me the 4 Runner is going to be the one I still have at 300K miles. Just old school tech that simply works. Although, it's never found a gas station it didn't like. :)
Finally! 5th gens prices will go down enough to be affordable. 4cyl turbo for an SUV? No thank you. I’d prefer a good old V6 that has more than a decade of manufacturing and aftermarket parts.
4 cylinder makes more power and tows 1000 pounds more. It does it with ease now. A V6 NA is slower and takes longer to make the power as the engine has to work harder. Turbos are such a great improvement now. Easy technology. They are built to last for a super long time now.

This guys comment should be sent to Toyota. We don’t want or need bells and whistles. Give me a V6 and two diff lockers.
Absolutely. Give people an option and charge enough for any fleet average impacts.

You're right. The Toyota turbo 4's are crude sounding and unrefined. A V-6 option should really have been offered.
One of my favorite things about the 5th Gen is that the engine still sounds like an old school truck. This new engine sound leaf blower on steroids-ish to me at least in the videos I’ve watched

4th Gen 4Runner SR5 actually looked better than 2025 4Runner.
4th gens are a totally different vehicle from the 5th and 6th gens. Apples and oranges. It's a disgrace to even see the 4runner label on these things.
Doug, the type of guy who knows the light bar does a good job at lighting things up for you despite never having driven the car in the dark because he only got the car 20 minutes ago ;)
Pros: no camera watching you like on the GX. Physical HVAC controls. Cons: Turbo 4, only 6k towing, non-European styling, etc. The GX is almost perfect, minus the no HVAC controls in the physical stack and that effing camera. Funny, because of all the combinations of SUVs that Doug points out the Toyota has not one of them is exactly what I want. I want the non-hybrid GX, with no camera, and physical buttons everywhere. That’s the closest, and it’s beautiful.
Built in Japan so that’s good news. Still like my 5th Gen quicksand.
I wish they did something more unique with the front end. It looks like they lifted the front half straight from the Tacoma
Excited to see these on the road, but super glad I've got my 5th gen instead
I was worried about getting envious watching the first major review, but the exact opposite has happened
happier than ever with what I've got
Same for me.
@@tomjarfas4707it doesn't do any better than the v6 ? Lol. It has more horsepower, more torque, better fuel economy and a far better transmission.
@@tomjarfas4707the 2023 one also is slightly cheaper than the 2024 one.
@@willthorson4543 i hope you understand that with a turbo you need premium unleaded, and even then you'll still likely only pull 19-21mpg. I had a 2.0L turbo and it only could max out at 22mpg. You put regular unleaded in a turboed engine and enjoy dogshit mpg's
@@willthorson4543 Get ready for your 4cyl and all of its parts to be screaming for attention because they are constantly high rpm'ing under huge pressures
Great review! Every other next-gen 4Runner review I’ve watched has left me asking more questions, but you were really thorough! The only thing you didn’t mention in the second row was that you can recline them to give you a little extra headroom. Nice job.
Loveed when he pointed out the curved rear glass on the trunk. This is heritage retro throwback to the 80s and early 90s 4Runners and it looks AMAZING, reminds me of safari trucks
They need so badly to bring back the FJ40 sized things with literally no extra tech as the base model, to take the segment that base bronco and wranglers seem to be abandoning. They could even just rebadge the samurai and I'd be happy.
I wish that would happen but the American market just doesn't support stripped down models. We want more tech, more room, more features
