Samsung Refrigerator Problems - Solving the Leaking, Noisy, Icing, and No Cooling Issues in One Fix

  • Samsung Refrigerators are the most notorious refrigerators on the US market - maybe the world. Despite their high prices, they've caused problems for techs and homeowners alike with problems involving the refrigerator cabinet.
Sometimes it leaks water in the crisper drawers, other times it makes an awful noise. Other times it will ice up and not cool. But ironically, all of these problems tend to come from one area of the refrigerator, and this one system of fixes has a radically high rate to solve everything in one repair.

Thanks Ben. I had a Samsung fridge like this a few months ago where that metal drain probe was bent from the factory and touching the plastic inside of the drain hole so it was creating a strong plastic burning smell inside the fridge. Something to watch out for. I enjoy your channel and I've learned a lot of good things from it.

I wanted to follow up on a post I did 5 days ago. Not criticizing this video at all, but this is what I found out and it can definitely save you money. I had this exact problem (fan noise likely from ice against the fan). I called Samsung Service directly. I was connected w a HUMAN tech, who I chatted w via text. He had me do a manual defrost, which is simply setting temp to 44 for the fridge and -4 for the freezer. He told me to keep that setting for 5-6 hours and then return settings to 37 and -2. I did that and, guess what? Noise was gone, so obviously ice was gone too. Never needed to open the patient up!
Follow up: after 5 hours, the temperature didn’t drop to what it should have been. I called Samsung again, referred to the case number they had given me from my first call. Via text, the HUMAN tech walked me through a “power down cycle”, which is just unplugging the unit for two minutes and then setting the temperature again. They said it would take about four hours to achieve goal temperature. Woke up this morning, and temp is a perfect 37/-2.The power down process reprogrammed the compressor. Sometimes you gotta get inside the guts of your appliances, but always try the least intrusive option first. There are a lot of service operations out there that have SAMSUNG in their name. Here’s the number for the legit center that I called: 1 800 726-7864. I hope this is helpful, especially for those of us who aren’t comfortable performing repairs. Good luck!

Ben is giving the public, for free, detailed information about how to keep its appliances running as long and cheaply as possible. A true advocate for consumers and contributing to e-waste reduction to boot. How much more value could you ask for than the knowledge and materials necessary to either 1) keep an expensive appliance working, or 2) know for sure that it needs to be replaced? More than happy to support this channel and business. Liked, subbed, shared, and bought his kit to refurbish my old fridge.

I’ll update later but if I can do this anyone can. I unplugged my fridge and blew a fan inside for 24 hours to defrost it. You can tell if it’s completely all melted by looking at the back panel. We called the Samsung repair dept to look at it. Our warranty was up, but thought maybe it wouldn’t cost that much to fix. After 319.00 the repairman put in a new part for the ice maker. After a week it stopped working again. We notified Samsung and they said we will send our repairman out again. Well, he put in a new part and after a week, it stopped again. By this time we were fed up with Samsung company. They wanted us to pay the service man more money, we said NO Way! The next day we went out for a new fridge. We will never buy another Samsung appliance again! Their customer service is horrible!

Ben, received the repair kit late last week and and installed today in a few hours. Great step by step video, and anyone wanting to do this make sure you have the steam device first... My coil was caked with ice and the steam, slow and steady pressure from below where the 3 screws are removed will eventually loosen the ice from the cover. BE PATIENT and do this slowly! I completed the repair and have also ordered the replacement evap coil cover to start clean - the styrofoam was breaking down and had several cracks. Temporarily held in place with the HVAC foil tape from the kit until the new cover arrives. I expect to see no ice when the new cover arrives. THANKS for a great video !

Ben.. Thank you for the video and the kit. It worked flawlessly. You just saved our family a ton of money.. we couldn't even leave our fridge for the weekend.. it was leaking that bad. The ice damming was twice the size of yours here, and took 1hr with a blow dryer to release without damaging the styrofoam cover. It did end up being the drain stems at the bottom (just like you said) but we're glad we improved the defrost efficiency, too. Mom really likes the fridge otherwise, so we're keeping it.. her word's final.
    Tips gleaned from my install:
    1. Take your time with it. Passive defrosting might take several hours.. it took 60 minutes for me to remove the cover with a blow dryer. Ice was built up at the top, where it's hardest to get heat to. Use a flexible putty knife to avoid prying with too much pressure. The longer it takes, the less damage you might cause to the styrofoam. Total process in video took me 4 hours, not including un/loading food.
    2. That forced defrost mode only needs to be on for maybe 15-30 seconds at a time. It shouldnt be beeping constantly. Prolonged running of the defroster can melt the refrigerator housing. Mine was warped after running constantly for about 180sec.. again, I had large buildup.. so I thought it should help. Turns out time is your friend, and I should have kept blasting it with hot air instead (I don't have a steamer).
    3. For the drain line: Some very hot water poured down, wait a minute and then ~20psi of compressed air.. cleared it perfectly.
    4. If your freezer bottom is an ice skating wrink, pour hot water around the edges of the sheet, and lift up. The sheet of ice can be caught by a wide, 1" deep oven tray placed under the drawer.
    Cheers!

I have a GE side-by-side refrigerator freezer. It’s about 35 years old. Has an LED “Electronic Monitor & Diagnostic System” control panel on the front of the freezer door. It was WAY ahead of it’s time. The ONLY service I’ve done is to replace the main control thermostat.
The evaporator fan, the evaporator heater, the condenser fan, the compressor, all have never been touched❗️After buying an under counter ice machine, I disabled the one in the GE refrigerator.
I guess it’s really hard for me to understand how GE was able to make such a trouble-free high tech unit that many years ago but company’s like Samsung, LG, etc. seem to have no clue how to make trouble free products today❓

Thank you for this. There are many videos out there that show how to remove the panel, but this is the only one I've found that 1) addresses what to do if your panel is frozen on, and 2) discusses and shows the styrofoam on the panel. Thankfully I was patient and I didn't force the panel off and damage the styrofoam! I didn't have a steamer, but I pointed a fan at the hole, and the frost melted within about six hours.

Worked on many of those. Had one freezing behind freezer about a foot down the drain. Either drain tube to close to freezer or insulation saturated. All the kits were previously done. There were so many service bulletins put out on this model for the same fix. An old turbine oil bottle with a spout works great pushing hot water directly on the ice in drain.

This is not the first video of yours that I've watched, and I want to complement you on how well your content is put together. You're articulate, thorough and give some great perspective from your professional expertise! I like all my Samsung products, and most have been very good, but our RF267AERS has been problematic since a few months after we got it. I've nursed it through and had to have a board replaced (Only a few hundred$) and a water valve. The ice maker stopped pulling water to make ice, although the auger and ice/water dispenser work fine. I am sure it's a fluke, but it stopped after I changed the water filter. Have you seen anything like that happen? I made sure the lines weren't blocked, do you think the whole unit is caput?

On that back panel cover are little arrows showing the locking tabs location to press with a putty knife or flathead screwdriver. Be gentle on pressure here because those tabs are plastic and can and do break.
That kit you sell is AMAZING! I am going to send my self-install clients to your page to get the parts.
Also, with the evap drain, you can use a trombone cleaner for obstructions not called ice. The steam cleaner you use is perfect!
The only other Samsung refrigerator video I could ever recommend is the ice maker of doom - aka: Samsung Class Action Lawsuit Ice Maker. The only caveat is that the price for the icemaker kit's are expensive on the retail side of things.

I had a freezing problem with my old Samsung that involved replacing the temperature sensor and applying metal duct tape behind the evaporator grills which solved the freezing issue 100% for the two years we lived in that house before selling it. I noticed that 4 years later the current residents resold the house and the fridge was still operating and included in the picture of the kitchen. I was careful not to allow the metal tape to touch any electrical connections. Seeing your fix I guess i could have used less metal duct tape but ...

I have found this video a little bit late, i bought a repair kit on amazon reviews are good. Inside the panel everything was completely frozen…. Fan was block with ice too.
So the kit I bought fit really good, until I put the panel back, the clips didn’t close properly so I try many ways as gently as I could, finally I took off the two tapes that goes in the the back and so then, I was able to close it, (but took me I while) it fit almos perfect…. I don’t know if because of those tapes, it wont work.
Your video is very helpful! Thank you!!!

Thanks for posting this video. I bought the repair kit from you and just installed it today. I forgot to get the temp sensor so hopefully that isn't going to be an issue for me. On my Samsung refrigerator, model RFG297HDRS, there was so little copper tubing coming to the coils, I ran the new defrost heater along the aluminum tubing as well. Your video didn't mention that being a problem so I hope that's okay! I had to do something with all that heating line. I think I only had maybe 8-12" of copper tubing.
My refrigerator had a little ice behind the panel but not as much as I expected... very little actually. However, the back wall of the refrigerator inside had ice on it and we had ice under our bottom deli drawer. When I did this repair today, there was literally a LAKE of water in the bottom there. It took two bath towels to soak it all up! Crazy... I sure hope this kit and the way I installed it fixes the issue.

    Hi Ben
Enjoying your videos as always ,
I do appliance repairs in austin for nearly 25 years and have worked on Samsung products for the last 15 years .
One thing I have never seen any repair site mentioning regarding this famous problem with Samsung fridges is the actual stayrofoam itself ,
Namely it loses its water repelling ability over time and gets soaked with water which in turn freezes and also causes the drain freeze.
Next time you are doing a repair in this just compare a new evaporator cover assembly with the one you take out and you would notice a big weight difference which causes by the old one absorbing lots of moisture .
I always replace the evaporator cover assembly and that has always fixed the problem . Obviously I unclog the drain and make sure the exit end nipple in the back is widened to let water out easily ,
But inside the fridge I install new evaporator cover assembly and that fixes the issue .

Just installed the supplementary heater kit. I followed the directions with my own supplies for the moisture kit - I had previously cleared out and checked the drainage tubes. My evaporator cover was completely waterlogged so I had to replace it (ouch! but less expensive than a new fridge!) I had wanted to replace the main defrost heating element but accidentally ordered the wrong part and had to reinstall the old one. Replaced the defrost sensor and the defrost thermostat. I added better weatherstripping to my new evaporator cover per another video (tinkering with small humans). I am also going to check the leveling to see if that is an issue.

I picked up one of these several months ago for $100. It's a nice fridge. I had to fix some rough spots on the front from the ice maker dripping when ice doesn't come all the way out. I've had a force defrost on it once I was going to do the repair on it but haven't got around to it because I haven't really had a lot of issues with it can't beat it for $100. I also picked up a Samsung washer and dryer here recently. Front loaders pretty cheap. Also the drum is cracked on the dryer. I already fixed that and the washing machine works really good how I look at it it's better than what I had. The washing machine we had did die and I was going to fix it but I decided to pass it on to someone else. I figured if the washing machine and dryer I just got last 3 years then I'm good. Same thing with the refrigerator. I only paid $100 for refrigerator. That looks really nice and when people look at it they think I paid quite a bit of money for it lol but from everything I've learned about Samsung appliances, I do not think I will ever buy one brand new

We had this problem with our Samsung fridge. The drain would ice over and eventually the whole evaporator housing along with water on the bottom under the drawers. At the time the only fix was the longer defrost drain probe. I tried it and it seemed to help until we hit the high humidity of summer. After that we decided to just get rid of our 2 year old unit. We might have not lost so much money on it had this kit been available back then.

However, on my side-by-side freezer/fridge unit (RS261MDBP XAA) the defrost sensor is in a plastic clip on the copper evaporator tube, near where it enters what appears to be an expansion chamber. (In the video the sensor is on the other, much narrower side.) Can the secondary heater be attached so near to the sensor? Since distances are small on this model, the heater would have to be doubled back on itself.

The DEFROST SENSOR wires were half the length of my original, and I had no space to clip onto cooling tubes, so I removed sensor from plastic clip and ziptied it direct to the top cooling tube . I have discovered a new weakness. If the power goes out there's a 50/50 chance of the main board going out.
It manifests by freezing everything in the refrigerator.
The first time I replaced ever sensor etc with no change.
I put in the new control board and it worked perfectly fine for 6 months until we had another power outage and it took out the board again.

Just finished installing this. I don't have an IR camera so I just have my fingers crossed.
The only real difference was the top pipe that the supplementary heater goes on was a lot shorter in my model (which the video warns could be the case) so I had to figure out what to do with the extra slack of the heater wire. I opted to string it down a bit on the left side and loop it back up (taking care to leave some space in the loop so the cable wasn't touching itself). Hopefully that will be ok.
