Quick update since there are a lot of comments about the autofocus.
I will not keep using the continuous autofocus. Its better then it used to be, but if you need a camera with rock solid autofocus I continue to not recommend the GH5.
It has PLENTY of ways around needing continuous autofocus but if you have to have it I recommend something like the 90d or a6400.

How do you feel about the G9 update it got ver 2.0 which gave it most of the GH5 4K 10bit recording and HDMI output. For people leaning more towards photography but also want good video.

@@jbmi5342 depends... for fast change of camera view (composition, lots of movements) I recommend the A7III. But I shoot with GH5 + Viltrox and Sigma 18-35mm dancers on square to my clip and it works well. I just keep the same distance and focusing manually :D . In room conditions the AF works well. A7III is great in combination with gimbal (I am using it with Weebill), but for handheld, and doing some my focusing changes(slow focusing form far subject to nearby etc) i prefer GH5. I like it more - better body, better stabilization etc. And you also can shoot the dancers with any camera, GH5 can do it well too.
That autofocus was rock steady. Despite being a Sony shooter, I will readily admit that you have the perfect camera
I think it had some problems but I'm really impressed with their update.

Another reason why I probably should snag one! I’m more of a photographer than a videographer (still like your vids for a reference!), but with these video stats, ease of access, and AF claiming to be less of an issue than prior to the upgrade, the GH5 seems to give Panasonic’s flagship MFT some more vigor in 2020. As of now maybe my intended audience for videos would be Instagram, like food videos or perhaps train/plane spotting.
Maybe it wasn’t a good idea for me to purchase *both* the Panasonic LUMIX G85 **and** GX85 (both inc. 2 kit lenses) for Black Friday, but I still have my eyes set on the GH5 one day if/when I’d want to work on improving my vid work. 👀

Love my gh5 😍😍😍😍 I’ve drowned it in the sea, shot in the rain, filmed quad biking in sand, and this past week I’ve been filming in snow. Absolutely reliable and lovely and eeeek still 2 years on I bloody adore it

Auto focus issues aside, I thought this was one of your best, most enjoyable videos to watch. You obviously believe in the camera, have history with it, and let that enthusiasm show. Too often reviews encourage people to purchase the latest technology, which isn’t always in the best interest of creativity. Kafala are you asking me or Mr. Everyday Dad? 😅 for me that’s subjective, I think for my eyes, TH-cam and stuff that I expect out of it, it’s good for me. I’m not a tech spec type guy though.
so i did the update and....well it seems better it really isn't something I could ever really use. it still hunts and still takes its time to react and that's with high sensitivity. I know why Panasonic isn't using phase detection. I wish they could. If the S1H had PDAF I would snap it up. Sadly my GH5 still won't be used much, I was hoping for much more after watching your video. Oh well...back to my A7Riv and GFX100 ;)
Yeah I totally agree, I’ll continue using manual focus on the GH5 and if I need good autofocus I’ll have to rely on my Sony camera.
I really wish Panasonic would stop being so stubborn and would include phase detection. Heck now that they are out of the sensor making business hopefully they’ll buy sensors with it.

What a great video! Based on the success you've shared, I imagine it's because there are a lot of us who have been hopefully waiting for our beloved GH5 to catch up on autofocus. It does look improved, but I think I'll keep manually focusing with the app. Still, doesn't change the fact that it's one of the all time great cameras. Simply amazing.

I wouldn’t buy it for the autofocus it still has some warping problems. I’ll continue using it with manual focus and the app 👍
Great vid, but then I am biased. One tip: assign the forward-facing function button to AF Lock mode. Then you shoot in manual focus and simply tap the function button to lock the focus. It's faster than AF, I use it all the time and I never lose a frame. The hugely customisable function buttons is (yet) another reason to stick with the GH5, although with the recent firmware update the G9 is a hot contender now too. It's great to see Panasonic continue to maintain 'old' models with firmware updates rather than bringing out new models every year (I'm looking at you, Sony).

That duel IS works wonders. Ive managed to shoot video with my GH5 and the Panasonic 100-400 Zoomed all in to 400 handheld and got useable stable video ;)
Yeah it’s crazy how good that dual is is. Plus if you turn on is lock it’s basically like having a tripod when you hand hold it 👍
the new pocket 4k update is pretty dank too
Unfortunately the out of focus wobble will never go away in auto focus mode as that's the nature of lenses! The only way to get round that is 1 shoot in manual focus mode or 2 set lens to F22 and add more lights to compensate and your background Won't be out of focus so you won't see that focus wobble 😊
Can you please advise on the "PLENTY of ways around needing continuous autofocus"? If my camera isn't focused, the rest of the specs are completely meaningless. I bought the GH5 3 months ago and I'm raady to sell it, waiting on the new wave of cameras coming out this year in 2020.

The Everyday Dad like better all round? Or for certain things? I’ve had the gh5 for a minute and couldn’t get over how photos look. I would take an xt3 for photo over gh5 photo any day just as much as I’d take gh5 video over xt3 video any day.

This was the Video I needed to see :) I bought my Gh5 2 years ago and I haven´t used it a lot, but now I got my new F1.4 12mm Lumix lense and the new firmware update 2.6.
I bought a DJ Ronin Gimbal, too! I´m ready for 2020 to experience everything with this little 4k beast, this camera is far ahead his time frame!
As another proud owner and TH-camr as well, I do agree that the GH5 is the best camera for what we do. There are things that they can do on the software side to make it better.
For one get rud of that mountain and flower focus distance ranger. It's better to have what the S1H has with the actual measurement.
Two, give us more paid upgrades. I can't just think that the only paid upgrade was VLOGL. Which tells me the camera can do more. I bet a higher dynamic range in the shadows and more.
They are holding it back. Here why say this.
The G9; better processor same sensor, but it won't work with the audio adapter. Panasonic is just stopping it.
Isn't true the BMPCC4K is the same sensor as the GH5s?
There's a reason the GH5 is my primary studio camera.. and has been since preorder years ago. I also own the Z6, XT3, and a couple others. Every camera has it's purpose :)

@@danielmessier4903 GH5 + sigma 18-35 f1.8. I can get that bad boy down to f1.2 with a speedbooster, gh5 has full size hdmi out.. XT3 has great autofocus, but no IBIS or self facing screen. Z6 is a great all around camera, just no self facing screen. They're all amazing to be honest.

I have canon lenses from having shot stills with a canon full frame for the past few years and would love not to have to get other lenses to work with the gh5. How good does the gh5 with canon glass work with a speed booster?
@@danielmessier4903 It works great... I've been using the sigma 18-35 for years, it's an EF mount lens, I use the Viltrox EF-m2 adapter.
I was planning to buy this for my Semi Pro work making Promotional videos for real estate and architectural projects. Seems from the video itself that this camera is aimed as a consumer level Vlogging camera ! As if Vlogging really needs more than a GoPro Hero 7 Black. And this Vlogging camera has touted bells and whistles like DCI 4K and HDR etc ? Just to entice the customers with buzz words so that the average consumer feels good that he's vlogging using a camera with all these 'pro' sounding features.

I've been itching to upgrade from my t3i for years, its long past time, but I'm being pulled in so many directions, its exhausting. I had my heart set on full frame for a while, but maybe its still out of my reach. I mainly want solid (gradable) video though, preferably able to shoot in raw, but 10 bit 4k is fine. Been eyeing the Fujii Xt3, but the lack of proper articulated screen is going to hurt it for me. I could go with a canon 90d, but do I really want another SLR when things are trending to mirror-less? i do have a bunch of EFS lenses, so that might make the most sense. I was previously considering the GH5 too, but maybe its autofocus isnt so great. I do like that it can record longer videos, which I've been needing for weddings and plays and such.

Thanks for the video, great to see your enthusiasm. I'm a gh5 owner and will be switching to a7iii. Reasons:
- gh5 auto focus still sucks
- plus background peeking is still there when moving
-dof, background blur is not that beautiful when vlogging
- slow motion is manual focus only
This comes from a vlogger's needs. Oh the only thing that the a7iii lacks is the flip out screen. IMHO.

I’ve tried every Full Frame mirrorless out there and keep coming back to the GH5 and sometimes S1. It’s hard to beat especially with that new firmware update.

Watching the light in the kitchen/dining room pulsing like a dying raver light made me realize that Panasonic's AF will almost always have that glitch. Not because they want us to have the glitch, but Panasonic just doesn't seem to know how to make DFD work as perfectly as Canon's DPAF (which will still, occasionally, hunt). It's hard to improve over the GH5. Once I got one in my hands, I realized just from playing around with it there wasn't much use for too many other cameras. In fact, I've gone full MFT as of today. The other cameras will be sent to their new owners. I know the GH5 can take a nice still, but I do have the G9 as well, so I've literally got both covered... plus with the G9 upgrade that came out the same day as the GH5 upgrade.... we're talking a seriously powerful camera that rightfully takes its place a half step down from the GH5 and probably slightly above the GH5s (even though, IMHO, the color science on the GH5s is better attuned).
That was also a great pic of you and Wonder Wife! It's also amazing to see you pushing towards 100K subs. I wasn't a TEDD early adopter, but I did come in, I think, just a split second before your rise went from a leisurely Sunday drive to racing down the interstate to beat the rush hour traffic. We're all very proud of you, good sir.

@@TheEverydayDad For certain scenarios I think the auto focus update is acceptable, but if you're doing a talking head and not moving, manual is the best way to go. But I think I'd trust the autofocus now. Maybe.
Realistically it is a hardware difference, not a software difference. GH5 uses contrast detection for AF. Most cameras with really good AF use phase detect, and of course, both at the same time. It isn't something you can really "fix". It is just something you can hope to improve the contrast detection of. But contrast detection is limited in all companies, not just Panasonic. This is why hybrid autofocus systems are so common now.
Hey the background lamp wobble is NOT a glitch! It's the nature of ALL lenses that are in Auto focus mode and the camera is continously making slight adjustments to the lens. If you don't want that focus wobble the shoot in Manual focus!

If you need the best autofocus go with the a6400. For literally everything else go with the GH5.

One thing I would disagree with you on GH5S that I own is low light superiority over GH5. I can safely go up to 12,800 Iso shooting dark live events vs 3,200 Iso on GH5. IBIS is good but not deal breaker for me since we always shoot with tripods, monopods or gimbals. V-loging has a different needs.
Don’t tell the Camera Conspiracies dude! I agree that the GH5 is the top filmmaker camera - even in 2019! The firmware update with improved AF doesn’t have any use for me as I like to manual focus.

@@tulud I shoot with a 1" Panasonic FZ1000, M 4/3 Panasonic GH4, APS-C Canon EOS 550D and Full Frame Canon EOS 6D. I can (and do) shoot with all 4 sensor based systems. The GH5s has a smaller si ze sensor than APS-C but due to it's los pixelcount and bigger pixelpitch the low light performance is close to Sony's Full Frame A7III.
Joris Maas you are absolutely deluded. Micro four thirds was chosen for everything except image quality. You will NOT BEAT a full frame sensor or even come close to it. Stop talking to me you deranged fanboy
Loving my two GH5 cams. It is a solid device and the only negative is the autofocus, but it has been so versatile it can pretty much do everything. If you are looking for more content to make without buy more cameras, I would love to see a full tutorial series. I still have no idea how to use some of the features you mentioned in the video.

The Panasonic G9 at $300 less can do 4k60p, 10 bit 4:2:2 internal, 1080p 180fps, and a good majority of the main important features found in the GH5. Plus, the G9 does some photo features better.

Except for video centric features such as waveform the 1DX2 is hands down one of the best small form video cameras out and it wasn't ever really advertised as such. Though maybe not at this price point. My only objection the GH5 is it's small sensor. I would certainly choose the S1 or the S1H due to its better ergonomics over and vlog included.
@@heartshapedfilms Well... a serious answer? "Though maybe not at this price point." is an understatement. The 1Dx2 is 5.5k on amazon. With that you can have literally FOUR GH5 and spare a couple hundred bucks on chocolate =).
The 1DX it twice the weight of the GH5, the 1DX doesn't go up to 180fps, or 4k 60p, the gh5 has: timelapse mode, articulated screen, focus bracketing, focus stacking, 225 focus point, smartphone remote control, 4k crop feature, etc, etc, etc.
Yes, 1DX is better in some things, mostly related to the bigger sensor and the battery last longer (partly the reason for such ridiculous weight).
ALL OF THAT, and I didn't even mentioned the image stabilization which is one the one thing at which panasonic is, hands down, the best on the market. The 1DX doesn't even have it.
The S1H is 3.9k on amazon, so, again, you can buy 3 GH5. So... again, you will have literally a bit better quality (if you want to put DoF and Bokeh in the "quality" tab, which is not actually correct at all) and low light capabilities for 3 o 4 times the price. About ergonomics, I didn't had one in my hand, so... but the GH5 is SUPER ergonomic. I've had used it for 10 or more hours straight, without having issues at all. About the vlog, again, is 100USD of difference and the S1/H are 3 times the price, so...
About the small sensor, yes. It has it's limitation. It's just that paying 3 more times for the little difference? as is stated in the video, if my requests to a camera are 90% met with the GH5, I don't need anything else and for the price difference, I'm fully done.
Just buy the GH5 with a 3.3k lens (which will be a top of the line wichever brand you choose) or, you can buy just the body of the 1DX MKII (I'll give you a FREE kit lens -when actually no lens is free- as part of the hypotethical situation) and let me know the results. =)
Now seriously, I'm not sure where are you from, but in my country, you have to spend 5k to buy a USED 1dx mkII, which is equivalent to a one year worth of a regular salary. Unless you are making a ton of money, buy that is unthinkable and yes, I undertand that Canon made the camera thinking in richer countries, but that's not the reality of most of the world, so with that, you can see all my reason for not choosing at all one of those cameras over the gh5, which, as I said, met 90 or perhaps 95% of my request from a camera =)

The G9 for the price is a better deal than the GH5 for most people. It's $400 cheaper, and since the new firmware update it has like 99% of the GH5 features. Unless you really need one of the few GH5 advantages then go with G9. G9 also has several features GH5 doesn't have for stills. G9 has better IBIS, and better autofocus. The only thing I miss from GH5 was the unlimited recording.
I really like what they’ve done with the g9 too but the biggest weakness there is it does not work with the XLR adapter, and that’s my primary audio tool 👍
I hope they fix the g7 af too. Anyway, the gh5 costs almost 120 grand in my country. Haha.

Darn, sitting here mighty torn between GH5 and Fujifilm X-T4. Does anyone have any thoughts? I would really appreciate your input!
@Justin Sanchez Primarily filming in three scenarios: 1) a roll of myself talking to the camera. I typically use auto focus for this. 2) Shooting broll of phones propped up on a desk. I review cell phone plans, so getting tight shots of the carrier name in the status bar and other settings like VoLTE anf WiFi calling is important. Typically use AF to focus once, then turn it off while getting the pan or tilt. I'll use continuous AF on my slider though. 3) Walking around and doing cellular data speeds years. I hold the phone out in front of me and use AF to focus on the phone. IBIS is helpful here. A close minimum focusing distance is also helpful.
the autofocus looks good, how about the g9? they also updated it and lowered the price to 1000$
I think they included the update to the G9 as well, but I'm not 100%. The G9 would be a great camera to get too, I used to have one way back in the day.

Except for the recording time limit, the G9 now has everything the GH5 that counts, plus better (6.5 stops) stabilization. It’s a better stills camera, and now matches the GH5 for video. It does have a time limit, but honestly, I had a G7 for a year and a half. I recorded exclusively video, and never had an issue with the time limit. I was recently unable to record a boring hour long lecture with my G9...too bad. SO, for my money the G9 is BETTER than the GH5 and less expensive, too.

The LUMIX G9 also got a big firmware update, giving it most of the GH5 features, and even better autofocus, for less $$$. The G9 would make a great B camera to the GH5.

Yup, probably very bad since it's not mentioned. I feel that if you're doing a review on these kind of product, a check list of thing(s) that the viewer wants to know should be covered and checked off as you make your videos.

Yeah but you turn some lights on or get faster lenses, like the Mitakon 25 f/0.95 or the Kamlan 50 f/1.1, etc. etc. Or a speed booster and fast EF glass, like the Canon 50 f/1.4. And then you don’t have to put up with the rubbish IS and rolling shutter on all SONYs and Canons.
@@the_black_douglas9041 turning lights on doesnt fix the issue if you want a scene to be recorded in lowlight, because it's night time or of you want to do a horror skid.
Every M43 camera sucks in low light. That happens when you have a tiny sensor, its like physics and stuff.
There is a reason why it’s so easy to do these things on a small sensor.

I sold my GH5 for the sony a7iii with a heavy hearth simply because the low light sucks and the af is horrible. I shoot alot of indoor stuff with uncontrolled lighting (events, clubs).
I really hope they come with a gh6 that fixes those two problems, then it would be a perfect camera.
For someone who u shoots narrative short films, travel videos and sometimes small commercials and is used to a Sony a6300 would you recommend the Sony a7iii or GH5?

@@castielvargastv7931 ive shot over 100clubs just the last 6months and i cant agree that its "good". Depends on your definition of good. I assume you use Flash for photography? Why on earth would you use gh5 for photos in low light?
@@Milan-cf1xe depends. I shoot commercial and travel video for living and i sold my gh5 for the sony simply because of the focus issues and the lowlight. I dont have time to shoot manual mode and i need autofocus i can trust. And the sony is better for photos too if you want to do both.

The only thing canon has on Panasonic is that they have a better selection of Lenses. I have a GH4 and it’s amazing. Great for photos and videos Paired with 12-35mm you have a great set up. But I recently acquired a 70d because I wanted canons variety of Lenses.

I'm guessing you've never heard of Blackmagic cameras? I get that a bit of embellishment is due as the GH5 is and has been awesome (I own one and love it), but it's not "the literal best" at everything. The BMPCC4k does most of that and also 12 bit RAW, both compressed and uncompressed, entirely internally and at a lesser price point with a full professional editing suite thrown in for kicks and giggles. I have to record externally with the GH5 to even get 10 bit in the 4k 60p. As a dude who pushes my grades pretty heavily, that is crazy tempting.
Also, as a side note on the dynamic range, that is one of the GH5's biggest weaknesses without a question. As a proud GH5 owner myself (again I love the camera), this is NOT one of it's strengths. Not even a little bit.
Frankly, I'm really tired of seeing over-graded BMPCC4K YT videos. Last I knew 'Cinema' did not mean slow motion and Tatooine-colored landscapes with Winter is Coming skies. Furthermore given the insane product development cycle and turnaround I think it's nuts for anyone to buy something that'll be replaced in a year. The BM Cinema 2.5K can be had for $800 and I doubt anyone could tell the difference once *properly* shot and graded.

@@impatrickt yeah, that's the only thing they left for the gh5... I dont need mode them what is possible with the record limit anyways, I mostly do shorter clips and add them together afterwards... there should soon be a workaround by using service mode again I guess

I made up my mind a while back to switch to micro 4/3 when the time is right for me. It's nice to see Panasonic supporting older cameras (not sure about the other companies). I'm leaning towards the G9 because it's skewed towards photography although the GH5 is tempting me now😂
The update seems to have made a difference even though the lamp was saying it's not locked. With good screen presence in a video that is not reviewing the camera, I would say the lamp is irrelevant and the camera works fine. 👍
That update makes the g9 look like an absolute monster of a camera. I’m considering getting one 😳
Problem with all these is the outdated MFT sensor format, which comes with substantially worse image quality than aps-c and full frame for stills.
@@youknowwho9247 I hear ya. Full frame would be awesome but I have physical issues that would make it a paperweight at times. M4/3 is a compromise that should fit my needs.
@@markattardo Oh man, sorry to hear. Medical issues are definitely a good reason to go as light as possible. MFT should fit the bill for you. All the best for your photography.
Sidenote: Maybe look at the new Sony APS-C lineup, too. They have some amazingly small and light stuff too.

I think it's the perfect camera for youtubers and such. But I wouldn't even consider it as a B cam for filmmaking. Perhaps in very controlled conditions. Every shot you showed us had blowout highlights and that overly sharp digital look. But I'll give credit where credits due... it's def the best vlogging camera out right now. I'd have to argue with sony a7iii is also up there. It has amazing autofocus and it's a full frame so the photos are extrenely good. Better than the some of the higher end canon cameras like the mark 3 and mark 4. However the gh5 has the rotatable screen. To do this with a sony a7iii you'll need to tack on a monitor.
I dont think there's such thing as the best camera. There's a camera out there to fit everyones needs. The pocket 4k/6k for filming shorts on a budget with very high end results. The Sony a7iii for decent video but amazing photos. The gh4/gh5 for a camera that does it all but not at the best quality.
I think the A6400 is the best budget camera capable of doing everything
@@SavageScientist definitely not a bad camera by any means but sadly it shoots highly compressed 8 bit video. Great for vlogs and getting started with music videos and weddings on a budget. Sadly 8 bit and even 10 bit footage is very limited so I personally wouldn't shoot with a camera for bigger budget projects that don't offer some form of raw. Weddings are run and gun type deals so you dont have time to set up lights. You rely on the sun for out door weddings and venue lights mixed with whatever light you can manage to get near the subjects that are constantly moving. The Sony a6400 would do just fun in ideal sitations where you control every aspect of the shot. But for run and gunning you will have blown out highlights and end up with all sorts of artifacts in the shadows and that's before being compressed again when exporting form your editing software and compressed again when via youtube. Many of us who have been doing this for some time call the Sony cameras the golden hour cameras. It's when they shine. But I would never use that camera or even a sony a7iii which we have on anything to serious. I think it's a great starter camera and with the right gear you can pull off some cinematic scenes. But once you go raw it's hard to go back. The gh4/5 I believe allow 10bit either internally or via a monitor. Which gives you much more wiggle room in post but still doesn't come close to cdng, braw or mlv. Were talking night and day results.
If you're a hobbiest who does weddings for around $3k all these cameras are acceptable. And even bigger budget projects. But you'll need a team especially for lighting. Most wedding videos you see using those cameras have 4 to 6 people at the location. With a camera that shoots raw and some experience with editing you can do the wedding solo or have a second shooter because you can bring back so much detail.
I think like the gh4/5 the sony a6400 can do a lot. Travel videos, vlogs, main camera for a youtube series and of course entry level paid work. But keep in mind more and more people are investing in cameras capable of shooting raw files. So you either upgrade and compete with these cinematic type videos or you use a mirrorless camera with high compression and hope for the best. I dont think the original video was directed towards short movie makers or event shooters and was more so brought up as a multiple function camera that's best at just that. But if you want a vlog camera. Buy a camera with a screen that can face you. If you want a travel camera. Buy something light weight with great battery life. If you want a cinema camera buy a cinema camera. Sadly there is no camera that doest it all at 100%. My pocket 4k sucks when it comes to vlogging. My friend RED is even worse due to the weight. Those are meant for bigger budget projects.

Love this review. I'm looking for an all around content camera....Live Stream, TH-cam, Stills. The Sony A6600 has been high on my list until I saw this review. I'm now in the GH5 camp..tell me if I'm missing anything but the GH5 appears to be a better option and a bit more affordable. I was looking at the GH5 kit with the 12-60 lens for starters. I think that would work for my live streaming. What other lens would you recommend for all around carry....try not to break my budget :). Thanks again for the great review!!
