Hi, interesting video. Thanks for the tips. How did you find juggling your university work and applying to these jobs and travelling to all these job locations? Thanks
Hi, thanks! It's pretty difficult, the hardest part of a graduate job/scheme is getting one. I tried to find as much spare time in the evenings/morning/weekends/lunches etc when applying. For 6 months it was pretty relentless but it paid off when I got my top choice offer. If you focus on a few jobs that you really want, that should reduce the number of applications you have to do which will make it a little easier juggling everything.

Hey, GOOD question! If you're graduating in Jan 2022 then the best time to apply would be Sept 2021 to start your graduate scheme Sept 2022. Some grad schemes are taking applicants all year round so you can always apply to them once you've finished/just about to finish. I'll make a video on this question and come back to this comment so you can check it out! Hope this helps.
I hear and understand clearly what you mean by reading from a script my interview recently wasn't successful and I believe it was due to this, I was over-prepared and wrote down everything I would say word for word but my question is... pre-recorded interviews? face to face isn't a problem but to pre-record a video interview and then send it is a little hard to not read from a script?
It's all about coming across as authentic, so providing you can read the script in a natural way then it'll be fine to simply read an answer. Ideally you can recite your answers from memory, that way you don't have to refer to your script and you can focus on saying it more naturally. If it's pre-recorded and you have a couple of attempts, I'd opt for a few bullet points and try improvise the rest. Best of luck if you have an interview!
Good question, I'm having to think for that one... I think I gave two references, both from past jobs. However, I don't think they followed up on them.
Good question! Coca Cola called me after the assessment centre, same with Unilever. For the companies that I didn't pass the initial application, unfortunately most of them didn't give much feedback (if any!). Hope that helps a little.
I failed my first numerical reasoning test then spend a week or two practising before taking the next one for Mars. A few solid days of practise should be fine!
Good question, I'll likely make a video on this. Below is a couple of recommendations and if you need some more, let me know! Why You? by James Reed The Interview Question & Answer Book - James Innes
Hi Martha, is it the aptitude tests that you're currently preparing for (numerical/verbal reasoning tests)? If so, you have to practise, practise and practise! There's a website called (Graduates First & Assessment Day) with a host of practice tests you can take (both free & paid). Your universities careers office should have some material too! Is there something you are specifically struggling with?
@@marthabarbz4510 The numerical reasoning questions are usually percentages/fractions/ratios and multiplication so each question is quite "simple" on the surface - the difficulty is getting everything answered under pressure in a time limit! But practising will help massively with that. Best of luck!
The irritating part from when I applied for internships was that when failing, not one of the companies provided me with feedback, always this "high volume of applications" excuse.
That can be extremely frustrating! Always try to follow up however unless you've made it so far through the application process, you may only get an automated email.
@@AdamLuke this is why I'm mainly applying to start-ups. I don't plan on being an employee in the long term, and will gladly pursue the low-hanging fruit if it means competition will be scarce. I'd be more likely to be accepted just because the employers have no other choice, haha!
Hi Zee, I applied to A LOT of grad schemes. I always kept my sights set on my top choice which I was fortunate to get however I hedged my bets by applying to a few different schemes. I applied to at least 10 however I would say it could have been closer to 15/20. My advice would be, apply to as many grad schemes as possible (that you're interested in) without having to sacrifice quality on your application.

Hi Adam! I just stumbled across your video while searching for tips for graduate programs. I wanted to ask you something. I'm applying for graduate programs this year but I completed my undergraduate degree in 2017. I then went to pursue a Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Advanced Diploma in Chinese language and then I went to China for an year to study in a full time Non-Degree program. I just finished that course in July and now I'm looking for jobs. I have less than 3 months of full time work ex but tons of internships since I was in different universities for 6 years straight. Do you think I'll be eligible for graduate programs in UK considering my undergrad degree was 3 years ago. And if yes, would it be a good idea to explain my educational background in my cover letter?
Hi, thanks for the question - your educational background is exactly what recruiters want to see on a CV! Speaking from experience, I had been graduated 2 years before starting my programme (I actually believe the extra couple of years experience helped secure my scheme). So yes, I believe you'll definitely be eligible and if you believe it's relevant then mention your further education in your cover letter. I would focus on your experience on internships as companies will love you already have experience in the corporate world.
@@AdamLuke thank you so much for your reply! I have wasted so many months looking for someone to just tell me that it's okay to have more education than a bachelor's degree to apply for a graduate scheme.
@@AdamLuke Thanks dude
Can i be nosy and ask what company it is?
sounds like GE
big reveal soon 👀
When they offered you a place on the grad scheme, did they ask for references?
Good question, I'm having to think for that one...
I think I gave two references, both from past jobs. However, I don't think they followed up on them.
How did you ask for feedback? Were you in direct contact with the company or did you have to search around for emails?
Good question! Coca Cola called me after the assessment centre, same with Unilever.
For the companies that I didn't pass the initial application, unfortunately most of them didn't give much feedback (if any!).
Hope that helps a little.
How much time did you take to prepare for SJTs and other tests?
I failed my first numerical reasoning test then spend a week or two practising before taking the next one for Mars. A few solid days of practise should be fine!
What books did you read?
Good question, I'll likely make a video on this. Below is a couple of recommendations and if you need some more, let me know!

How did you prepare for the online assessments?
Hi Martha, is it the aptitude tests that you're currently preparing for (numerical/verbal reasoning tests)? If so, you have to practise, practise and practise! There's a website called (Graduates First & Assessment Day) with a host of practice tests you can take (both free & paid). Your universities careers office should have some material too! Is there something you are specifically struggling with?
@@AdamLuke thank you for your help. I’ll definitely continue practicing
Hi Adam, how many grad schemes did you apply for out of interest?
Hi Zee, I applied to A LOT of grad schemes. I always kept my sights set on my top choice which I was fortunate to get however I hedged my bets by applying to a few different schemes. I applied to at least 10 however I would say it could have been closer to 15/20.
My advice would be, apply to as many grad schemes as possible (that you're interested in) without having to sacrifice quality on your application.
@@AdamLuke thank you so much. You’ve really inspired me to not give up. You show that if you really want something, you can achieve it. I guess my final question would be- which resources did you use to practice numerical and verbal reasoning? Thank you 😊
@@zenabattryde7004 Don't give up! I applied for a few before getting my offer. I mostly used a website called Graduates First which has a host of practise tests for each stage of the application.
@@AdamLuke I didnt manage to get one in third year so dedicated myself to it from last September (after I graduated) literally had a word document with about 50 schemes I was interested in, managed to pass an AC i November, accepted it and started my scheme two weeks ago for the Jan intake. It's important for third years to remember that only around 5% of students secure a scheme before leaving Uni.
What uni did you go to?
uni of shef
You're so handsome
Haha thanks
The most soul destroying experience of my entire life. It's miserable
Applying for jobs can be pretty rough! Keep at it man
I know I won't be an early applicant now given that most of the schemes have already closed, but at least it has given me some hope that there is a slight chance that I might get considered. So, thank you so much! It really means a lot 😊
@@simranchawla6 I'm glad I was able to help in some way! I went through similar feelings of doubt when I was applying, and I ended up on a scheme so apply with confidence!
The next couple of months is prime time to apply so best of luck with your applications. If you have any more questions, please feel free to message me on instagram or drop me another comment 🙌🏻
@@AdamLuke Thanks a lot 😄🙌🏻

As a 20yr executive recruiter, the biggest factor is your natural presence, charisma and communication skills..which you have in spades.....my one piece of advice is try and leave the UK and either move to the US tech industry or maybe somewhere in Asia.....
Thank you so much, I appreciate the positive feedback.
Good advice, I definitely could consider my options. Working in the US may be a good move.

Hey! Is that in reference to the assessment centres? I'm sure some can be! I would 100% steer clear of companies who promote these kind of environments.
Yo Adam! I am currently looking for grad schemes and your video popped up in my youtube feed. Is there any platform we could chat for some questions I have. I would really appreciate it because I’m running out of hopes 😅
