Bartolo Colon defying the laws of the universe needs a deep rewind

  • In 2016, Bartolo Colon was just about the last person on Earth you'd expect to hit a home run: A pitcher in his 40s with very few at-bats to his name. And yet ...
... well, before we get to it, we should rewind. We should examine how and why pitchers became so famously bad at hitting. We should remember how the designated hitter came to the American League, but not the National League, and take note of Colon mostly occupying one half of that divide. And before we dig into Bartolo's mostly pitiful, sometimes hilarious career at the plate, we should establish how great he is at his actual job, even into his 40s.
This is a different kind of moment in history, but to appreciate how amazing it is, it deserves the deep rewind treatment.

One guy who was a good hitter for a pitcher was Earl Wilson, who played for the Red Sox and Tigers mainly in the '60s. Career .195 average (which doesn't sound like much, but is quite good for a pitcher really) and 35 career HRs, including two times he hit 7 in one season. He was before my time, but I've heard my dad tell some stories about the 60s Tigers teams :D

I'd watched this video before, but I came back here upon seeing a Secret Base article asking if Bartolo Colon was the worst batter to ever hit a home run, and I don't believe he was. Which leads to a game that needs a Rewinder, as much to my surprise, it already has its own Wikipedia Article: New York Mets at Atlanta Braves, July 4 (or more accurately, July 4-5), 1985. A game that was delayed 90 minutes by rain before it even started, an additional 41 minutes by rain in the bottom of the third, featured Keith Hernandez completing a cycle in the twelfth inning when he would've had it complete in the eighth if not for a bad call in the sixth, the Mets scoring two runs in the 13th only for the Braves to tie it up again, Darryl Strawberry getting both himself and his manager run for arguing balls and strikes in the 17th inning, and of course, _career .060 hitter Rick Camp_ hitting a two-out solo homer to tie the game at 11 in the bottom of the eighteenth. Oh, and the final score in 19 innings wasn't 12-11, or 13-11, or something like that. It was _16‐13._ The Mets scored five runs in the top of the 19th and the Braves got two of them back in the bottom of the inning. But wait, there's one more twist! In between the long game and the rain delays, this game ended at 3:55 AM EDT on July 5, but it was the 4th of July game. You know, that holiday where they set off fireworks? 😂 Yeah, that night's promo was a post-game fireworks show, and they didn't let it being *f***ing 4 in the morning* stop them from delivering on that promise. Reportedly the local police received phone calls from residents in the vicinity of the stadium who were awoken by the blasts and thought _the city was being bombed._
